The classes are introduced to firefighters as positive role models to seek help from. They are shown various types of bunker gear and air packs to let the child know the different appearances a firefighter has No matter the appearance of a firefighter, they are there to help! They are introduced to the definition of an emergency, how to dial 911, and how to stop, drop, and roll.
Fire Alarms & Closed Doors
FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
Your ability to get out of your home during a fire depends on advanced planning and warnings from smoke alarms Make sure you have a plan and that you practice the plan with your whole family If you have questions or need assistance in preparing an Escape Plan, please contact the La Porte Fire Marshal’s office at 281 867 4603 or visit us at LaPorteTX.gov/FireMarshal
Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan When staying overnight at other people's homes, ask about their escape plan. If they don't have a plan in place, offer to help them make one This is especially important when children are permitted to attend sleepovers at friends' homes
Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home
Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building If someone is missing, inform 911 when you call Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues
FIFTH GRADE

For more information, about the La Porte Fire Department go to Lpfd.net or visit nfpa.org/public-education.

Assign Assistance
The Fire Marshal's Office Deputies review the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every room and how and when to change the batteries, along with what to do when a smoke alarm sounds Afterwards, the students are able to view the fire trucks and ask questions of the firefighters.
If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency Assign a backup person, too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency
These students get hands on training about the different types of extinguishers to explain how to best put out different types of fires. Firefighters provide the third graders with house props and water can extinguishers to demo putting out a fire
Choose an outside meeting place (i e neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan
Fourth graders get to participate in pumper races They are shown how water is accessed from a fire hydrant through the connection of the hoses and nozzles. The students are then paired up to try it themselves in a fun quick race
Check your number
THIRD GRADE
Pick a Place
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of their home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year In commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage This horrific incident killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land While the source of this fire was not determined, its effects created a lasting impression This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait Plan your escape ’ works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires Today’s homes burn faster than ever You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on an early warning from smoke alarms and planning
FOURTH GRADE
OCTOBER 9-15 3
When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily
Security Bars
OUTREACH
Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
Once you're out, stay out!
FIRST & SECOND GRADE
Fire Prevention week ends with the fifth graders. The students visit the La Porte Fire Training Field and are shown behind the scenes to see what goes into fighting a fire, from the 911 call coming in to the fire being put out These demonstrations help students connect to their knowledge of fire safety

Make a Plan
Escape Routes
If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency Emergency release devices won't compromise your security but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire
During Fire Prevention Week, the La Porte Fire Department and Fire Marshal's Office team up to visit all elementary schools within La Porte to teach students from Pre K to the fifth grade about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire PRE-K/KINDERGARTEN

La Porte is planning for its future with an update to the Comprehensive Plan The City’s previous Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2012 and updated in 2018 This Plan is named Future by the Bay to celebrate the City’s prime location and forward looking vision. The Comprehensive Plan is a document that envisions what the City will look like in the next 10 to 20 years. It will help the City maintain its character, enhance the quality of life for its residents and support economic development. The Plan will be organized into several chapters covering various topics like land use, transportation, parks, economic development, and housing. The Plan will conclude with an implementation section on how to best accomplish the community’s goals.

The process will include several opportunities to give input where the community can engage at their comfort level. Whether attending focus group meetings, taking the online survey, or attending an in person community open house, there will be plenty of chances to provide input throughout the process. The community’s input will shape this Plan as they imagine what they want their City to be in the future This is why it is critical for residents, business owners, professionals, and youth to participate in the planning process
