JULY

AUGUST SEPTEMBER

CITY HOLIDAYS

City offices will be closed Thursday, July 4, and Monday, September 2.

Garbage pick up scheduled for these days will resume on your next scheduled day

HR Professionals Day is celebrated annually, since 1959, to recognize the important role of Human Resources management in organizations. This day aims to raise awareness about the many roles of HR Professionals.

The City of La Porte’s HR Division includes four full-time employees - an HR Manager, Senior HR Generalist, HR Generalist, and HR Specialist. Together, they serve 410 full-time employees and approximately 150 part-time employees, including seasonal staff. As a team, they are responsible for Recruitment, Retention, Onboarding, Compensation, Training and Development, Risk Management, Benefits Administration, Employee Engagement, Policies and Procedures, and much more!

Human Resources is without a doubt the most fundamental role to an organization’s success. Constant changes in federal laws as well as society in general require HR professionals to navigate and adapt to current expectations On September 26th, let’s take some time to recognize and acknowledge those that work in HR! Thank them for countless hours of invaluable work.

With the start of another hurricane season, gathering and safe keeping your important documents in one location will be essential for a smooth and speedy recovery, should we experience an emergency event.

Take some time now to gather records that might be vital to you, such as:

RECORDS THAT IDENTIFY WHO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE (driver’s license/ID card, social security card, passport, birth certificate)

DOCUMENTS THAT RECORD FAMILY

HISTORY, THAT MIGHT ALSO HELP IDENTIFY YOU AND YOUR FAMILY (marriage license, divorce decree, death certificates, voter registration cards)

COVERAGE FOR YOUR DWELLING (insurance certificates [homeowners, windstorm, flood, or renter’s], deeds with surveys, rental or lease agreements)

COVERAGE FOR YOUR CAR(S) (car title, insurance certificates/cards)

MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION (medical cards med/dental/vision, list of medications, vaccination records, contact information for medical/dental/vision doctors, contact information for the pharmacy that you regularly use)

PET DOCUMENTATION (adoption papers, vaccination records, registration records, list of medications, contact information for your veterinarian)

OTHER RECORDS THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL (contact information for family and friends, contact information for hotel/vacation rental where you might evacuate to, extra cash, and checkbook)

You can place these documents in a waterproof pouch, like the ones donated to the City by the General Land Office or ones that you can purchase on Amazon for $15 to $30. It only takes a few minutes to gather your vital records, place them in a waterproof pouch, and keep it in a place where you can quickly and easily grab it if you have to evacuate or get to the information in a hurry.

NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW TO BE READY, LA PORTE!

This summer, the Court’s juvenile R.O.C.K. program will have two weeklong sessions by Dr. Windell Gill A licensed therapist and teen behavioral specialist, Dr. Gill explores emotional intelligence, trauma, consequences, and life and career choices. The Municipal Court will also participate in the Twilight Cemetery Clean up.

You can catch the Court out and about celebrating Juneteenth with the community, at the Back to School Bash, and at the Health and Safety Fair distributing goodies and traffic safety materials.

The City of La Porte completed an asphalt alley project in the Historic Main Street District, funded by La Porte Development Corporation; revitalizing historic downtown, enhancing accessibility, & improving infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERSHIP CHIEF SCOTT PULLIG

In the last couple of years, Chie Scott Pullig has been hard at work to complete and graduate from the Leadership Command College (LCC) of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) The Leadership Command College is nationally recognized as a premier law enforcement management program and is a nine-week commitment completed over a two-year period It consists of three modules of three weeks each, held at Texas A & M University, Sam Houston State University, and Texas Woman’s University

Deputy City Secretary Maria Lawler visited with Chief Pullig about his experience What was a big takeaway from the LLC?

“More than anything, it’s the connections you make throughout the program Networking with other agencies and learning how they work is insightful and helpful on how agencies may improve procedures, and the connections and contacts are a big resource for law enforcement. This is another milestone achievement for Chief Pullig, who also holds a Master Peace Officer Certification and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management. Chief Pullig has been with the City of La Porte for 25 years and leads a department accredited by the Texas Police Chiefs Association’s Law Enforcement Accreditation Program Before being named the new City of La served as an Assistant Police Chief, Officer, Detective, d worked in the Investigations and Support Services

lishments and congratulates him on completing LLC!

30 YEARS IN MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

GAY COLLINS

Gay Collins has been with the City of La Porte for an incredible thirty years. Originally from Louisiana, she arrived here in spring 1994 and began working for the City a month later Her journey began as an administrative secretary before she moved into EMS billing One thing led to another, which eventually saw the beginning of her career as an accountant in 2010 Fun fact, La Porte is lucky enough to be the first (and hopefully the last!) governmental body for which she has worked.

Gay has had the opportunity to work with five mayors, six city managers, and three finance directors She has been around to see how much the City has grown in all aspects but especially regarding its budget She stated that when she began working with the City, the general fund budget was $17.4 million and now it is at an estimated $79.5 million. It is safe to say that she has had the opportunity to really see it all

Gay’s hard work and service have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated Assistant Finance Director Shelley Wolny said of the occasion, “I’m happy to celebrate Gay’s thirty years of loyal service to the City of La Porte. Her dedication and commitment to furthering her education and career have greatly contributed to the success of the Finance Department I have worked with her for 24 and a half years, and I’m thankful to have her as a coworker and friend”
