Department: Municipal Services
Employee Dickey, Ryan
Approving Director Reynolds, Lisa
Destination

August 18, 2025
August 20, 2025
Purpose
Will be attending the annual public works conference (PWX 2025) in Chicago as a Municipal Services - Engineering Division representative. The knowledge, connections, and experience gained here will improve my ability to deliver capital improvement projects that are up-to-date with the latest best practices and materials the US has to offer.
How did the travel apply to the job?
Traveled to the Public Works Expo in order to 1) get exposed to new processes and technologies that can be applied to City projects, 2) attended lectures by experts on topics that could benefit the City by streamlining programs while also making space for significant cost savings, and 3) established (or deepened) relationships with other public works workers across the KC metro, aiding our ability to cooperate with, or learn from, our neighbors.
How did training add value to the city?
Attended some lectures with potential to add value to programs in Municipal Services, particularly useful conversations include using vibroacoustics to detect weak (or even leaking) areas of water main and another concerning the implementation of the EPA Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, which will be a massive and unique challenge for the City over the next decade. Also met several vendors who have products that could address some issues on capital improvement projects or maintenance that I may not have encountered otherwise. Made peer-to-peer connections with other public works officials from Raytown, Liberty, Kansas City, Blue Springs, Oak Grove, Clay County, former Independence employees, and likely more I'm not recalling at the moment. This could lead to more education opportunities, or improved inter-agency cooperation down the road, that may have not been possible otherwise.
General comments:
I expected this conference to be educational and good for making some new relationships, but it far exceeded my expectations. I'm very, very grateful I got to attend.

This is a great conference that has technical learning of SEL products and techniques that help us stay up-to-date with current technology. It is also a great opportunity to network with other utilities and SEL representatives and ask how they are solving similar issues that we currently face.
Note: Driving I did mileage at the rate in that form down and back 176 miles each way. 176*2*.67=236.00 plus $50.00 in gas roundtrip for transportation costs.
