The City of Green is enhancing the memorial offerings with the addition of a columbarium at Greensburg Cemetery on Thursby Rd.
Columbarium: structure, often made of stone, that is designed to house cremated remains in individual niches or compartments. Each niche typically holds an urn containing the ashes of a deceased person.
The Greensburg Cemetary columbarium, constructed of black and grey granite, will be built in several phases. The first phase includes the construction of the two patios and the foundation for all future
phases including a central structure with a single arch around it. The first phase creates 208 niches. Once fully constructed as designed, there will be 960 niches.
1/31/25.
During this construction phase, the City is offering a $200 discount until January 31, 2025. For more information or to purchase a niche, contact the Service Department at 330-896-4176.
Making Play More Accessible: Building an Adaptive Sports Field
The City of Green has teamed up with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, a national non-profit organization, for the oversight and management of the installation of an adaptive and ADAcompliant youth multi-purpose field at Kleckner Park, 4855 Thursby Rd. This is the first adaptive sports field to be built as part of the Green Park system. It is also the first one built by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in Ohio.
The adaptive sports field uses specifically designed synthetic turf providing barrier free access to children
with mobility issues. In addition, the outfield will also be a playable space for adaptive soccer.
The field will be home to the Green Baseball Camp, Softball Federation Challenger Program and the Green Soccer Association GOAL program for children with disabilities as well as other adaptive sports programs throughout Summit and Stark counties.
Construction for the field begins this Fall. An opening day ceremony is being planned for Spring 2025. Each Niche

LETTER FROM THE
I
mayor
According to the Akron Metro Area Transportation Study Planning Data Force (AMATS) to be released later this year, the population of Southern Summit County, which includes Green, is anticipated to increase by 3% in the next 20 years. According to this draft report, the need for K-12 school enrollment increases by 3.9%. And why these numbers are not alarming and easy to plan for in terms of government services provided, the number that gives planners, businesses and government alike pause is that employment growth for Southern Summit County is estimated to increase by 23.2% over this same period.
This latter number is one the State of Ohio is seriously following statewide because it’s not just our region that will have a lack of workers. We know that there are less babies being born to replace the current population and there are more aging seniors throughout the US and right here in Green. So, what can the government and our partners do to meet the needs of businesses seeking employees?
In Green, we spend time talking with our businesses to understand their current needs and future needs.
As I have met with dozens of businesses since taking office, all have said we need more people. Several companies have told me they would hire five people today, without any skills, if they could find them. The State of Ohio has created an entire office dedicated to Workforce Transformation, under the direction of Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, to address this very need. Through this office they are focused on several initiatives including OhioMeansJobs, TechCred, Teacher Bootcamp Program and several others to address the need for workers and how to transform the workforce we have today into the workforce of tomorrow.
Our Planning Department staff is dedicated to helping our businesses connect with these state programs and others to help our local employers find the employees they need. As such, the city is pleased to be hosting Engaging Green, a new speakers’ series for our businesses and community leaders.
1
Our first Engaging Green event, focusing on Workforce Transformation and Development, will be held on Wednesday, October 16 at MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, from 8 am – 11 am. The day is designed to share information and details about state and local programs aimed to help businesses recruit, retain and hire employees featuring speakers from Stark State College, the Portage Lakes Career Center, Jobs for Ohio Graduates and others. Following the presentation, there will be a resource fair with local representatives to answer any questions and provide further information. The event is free and geared to business leaders, employers, HR managers, plant managers and others responsible for hiring or interested in employee transformation. Neighbors Helping Neighbors
You might have heard of Green Moms, the Facebook group, but did you know there is also a Green Dads group? Recently Todd Roberson and Mike Lynch, members of the Green Dads group, approached Mayor Yeargin about helping those in need in Green with some basic yard or home maintenance and asked if the city could help facilitate making connections.
As a result, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, originally launched through the pandemic, was reborn to help residents in need. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer if you would like to request assistance, visit cityofgreen.org/ neighbors or call 330-896-5500.

Eagle Scouts Enhance Parks
This year, Eagle Scout Candidate Ian Liebmann completed the Loop Trail at East Liberty Park. The work involved clearing brush to create an eight-foot-wide walking trail. Total clearing to create the 0.4 m trail was approximately 16,896 square feet or about one third of a football field. Ian and more than 24 volunteers completed the project over three weekends.
Eagle Scout Candidate Jacob Keeferr ensured the East Liberty Loop Trail had safe foot traffic with a 30-foot-long bridge over a creek on the path. The bridge took three days to build, and the City Parks Maintenance Division assisted with the installation.
An additional Eagle Scout project was completed in March 2024 by Dorian Van Voorhis at the historic Levi J. Hartong Farmstead located in Southgate Park. His project included repairing the historic milk house, replacing the entry door, shutters, and fabricating a new cupola and weathervane for the roof.
New Secure Income Tax Drop Box
The Parks and Recreation Division and the Income Tax Division recently switched offices within the Central Administration Building (CAB). This means that the secure Income Tax Drop Box has moved locations. It is now located on the side of the building facing the parking lot, near the electric vehicle chargers. The former Income Tax Drop Box will be converted to a Flag Retirement Box. American flags may be dropped off to be properly retired.
Our newest fields, designed for ages 5-12 in baseball and ages 5-18 in softball, at Greensburg Park witnessed their first games this summer.
