Willadale Trail Adds New Connector to Boettler Park
The City of Green celebrated the official opening of the Willadale Trail on Arbor Day, April 25, 2025 with the official "first hike" led by Mayor Rocco Yeargin. In addition, two bur oak trees were planted at the trail entrance in Boettler Park, a gift from the First Energy Corporation, to commemorate the grand opening.
The development of Willadale Trail began in the fall of 2018, when the City acquired 20 acres of land contiguous to the existing Boettler/Southgate Park system. The new one-mile multi-purpose trail and boardwalk loop connects Boettler
Who was Willa Dale?
The Trail is named after Willa Dale Plummer (nee Sarver) who owned the land that is now the Willadale Trail. She and her husband, Luther Plummer, raised three sons in Green, and have four grandchildren, most of which remain in the area. Willa Dale was a strong woman whose memory has remained in the hearts of many.
and Southgate Parks to Koons Road, providing the first direct connection from Boettler Park to nearby neighborhoods.
Construction of the Willadale Trail was funded primarily through grants and the State of Ohio’s capital budget allocations, with almost 100% of the construction costs covered by external funding sources.
“We are excited to open this important connector trail that enhances access to our parks and strengthens the walkability of our community,” said Mayor Rocco Yeargin. “This project not only adds new recreational opportunities but also showcases our commitment to preserving and enhancing Green’s natural spaces.”
Adaptive Sports Field Opens at Kleckner Park
About 50 children with unique abilities and their families ran the bases at the new Adaptive Sports Field at Kleckner Park, built in partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, during a special sensory-friendly opening. The new barrier-free field will be home to programs supporting children with disabilities across Summit and Stark counties. Learn more at cityofgreen.org/AdaptiveField

Summer has arrived, and with it comes a season full of opportunities to enjoy all that our great city has to offer. I want to personally invite you to join me at one of the many family-friendly events happening across Green this summer.
If you’ve never experienced FreedomFest at Boettler Park (June 28) or our Central Park Summer Celebration, I hope you’ll make the time to check them out. These free events are cornerstones of our community calendar, and our Parks and Recreation team has worked tirelessly to create experiences with something for everyone. Check out the Summer Guide insert for all the exciting details.
But summer in Green is about more than just events and music—it’s about exploring, connecting, and making memories. When family or friends come to visit, consider showing them a few of my favorite spots:
MAPS Air Museum. This little (actually, it’s not so little because it is a huge air hanger) museum offers something for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. It’s one of the properties listed on the State of Ohio’s Aviation Trail.
Willadale Trail. The newest trail in Green is an easy hike for all abilities. Great for an afternoon stroll when visiting the park or an early evening walk.
Fireworks. Don’t forget Green hosts its annual fireworks a week early during FreedomFest on Saturday, June 28, rain out date is June 29. The Portage Lakes Fireworks are set for July 5. If you have littles who don’t like the big sounds of fireworks, you can view the Portage Lake Fireworks from Springhill Sports Complex.
Raintree Golf Course. I’m not a golfer, but my golfing friends are loving all the upgrades to Raintree, from the fairways to the cart paths to the new golf carts complete with GPS technology, built-in Bluetooth speakers, digital scoring and more! If Raintree is booked, we have four other golf courses (three public) for you to choose from. In fact, Green has the most golf course within city limits in Northeast Ohio.
Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Fishing or Birding at Nimisilla. This peaceful lake is a gem. Check out the bald eagles nesting there or a variety of migrating birds throughout the summer including the purple martins in August. Or grab your rod and reel -- Nimisila Reservoir was named Ohio’s top lake for largemouth bass and sunfish by the Division of Wildlife in 2024.
Splash Pad at Central Park. A hit with the little ones! Open daily from 11 am to 7 pm, weather permitting.
Ice Cream. Of course, the perfect end to a summer day is ice cream! Check out one of Green’s top places for a cool treat including Handel’s, Dairy Queen, Pav’s Creamery, Sweet Frog, and Waylon’s.
This summer, let’s make the most of what Green has to offer. I hope to see you out and about!

The CORE: Center of Recreation & Education
Opens in November
The CORE is the City of Green’s Center of Recreation and Education. Originally called the Community Courts, The CORE is a joint project with Green Local Schools. The new Green Middle School is connected to The CORE building, allowing for easy collaboration between the City of Green and Green Local Schools. With the new school buildings opening at the start of the 2025-2026 school year, The CORE is slated to be completed in early Fall with a grand opening event on Saturday, November 15.
Green Parks and Recreation CORE staff, led by Zack Kaufman, the facility supervisor, is currently working on policies, fees, and
programs for the new facility.
“The addition of the indoor athletic facilities will help meet the needs of our various school and youth athletic teams looking for practice and game space,” said Kaufman. “We will work to accommodate as many teams as possible with our available facilities while also being intentional about leaving open time for our community members.”
The CORE plans to be open from 7 am to 10 pm daily, weekend hours vary. “During these hours, members may walk, jog, or run on the elevated track, take part in a variety of classes and programs, and utilize the turf and basketball courts when they are not actively scheduled.”
“We want The CORE to be a facility that has something for all ages and interests. We plan to move our existing indoor fitness programs to our CORE Studios while offering various new youth, fitness, and educational programming.”
Beginning in the Fall, memberships for admission to The CORE will be on sale with resident, family, and
non-resident rates. Tours and open house hours will be scheduled for the community to check out the facility, and sign up for their inaugural membership.
The membership fee will assist in covering operating costs for the facility, and will be a nominal fee for families. There will also be a day rate fee.

Roads Scheduled for Resurfacing in 2025
Green City Council has approved the 2025 road resurfacing program set to start late spring. To determine which roads make the list, all City roads are analyzed and graded based on a multitude of factors such as age, degradation, and traffic volume every two years. From these ratings, a program is put together to maximize the available annual budget. Pavement saving techniques such as microsurfacing or a spray treatment to restore asphalt flexibility and extend the life of the roadway; strip paving; or full resurfacing are selected based on professional analysis.
Other Pavement Projects Planned for this Summer
• The Ohio Department of Transportation is resurfacing Massillon Road/SR 241 in Green. Including all sections except those recently completed as part of the roundabout projects. This construction is slated to begin in June.
• A right-turn lane is being added to Graybill Road at the new entrance to the Green elementary school campus. Local traffic will be maintained for each project. Sign up for text alerts about projects in your area by texting GREENOH to 99411.
Learn more at cityofgreen.org/Resurfacing.
The following roads are scheduled for resurfacing in 2025:
• Raber Terrace
• Robinwood Drive
• Frawood Drive
• Mars Road
• Venus Road
• Saturn Drive
• Star Drive
• Doxey Drive
• Lindakay Drive
• Comet Lane

Annual Sidewalk Maintenance Program Begins Second Year
Last year, City Council approved a sidewalk maintenance program for the replacement of neighborhood sidewalks. The annual multi-year program assists in bringing all our existing sidewalks up to standard.
Although residents are responsible by city ordinance for all sidewalk maintenance on their property, the annual program provides cost sharing options between the city and property owner.
The sidewalks are inspected annually and rated on condition. Trees in the devil strip/tree lawn are reviewed in relationship to
Home Improvements Require Permits
Making upgrades to your property this summer? Don't forget your permit. As a rule of thumb, if the addition or improvement makes a modification to the outside of your home, you need a zoning permit.
Permits are needed from the City of Green for the following:
• Sheds
• Fences
• Pools including above ground
• Home additions/decks
For a complete list, visit cityofgreen.org/zoning or call 330-896-6605.
the sidewalk damage. As trees have matured in the “devil strip” they may have caused damage to the sidewalk. If so, the city will cover the cost of the tree removal and will pay 50% of the sidewalk replacement.
The City consolidates the repairs annually to get the best pricing. Residents have the option to pay directly or have their property taxes accessed.
Residents will be notified via mail if their sidewalk is on the list of repairs this year. Learn more at cityofgreen.org/Sidewalks

Energy Offerings through Municipal Aggregation Programs
The City of Green is a governmental aggregator, certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). As an aggregator, the City may negotiate and purchase electricity or natural gas on behalf of its residents. There are two types of aggregation: opt-in and opt-out. Green operates under an opt-out
program for both electric and gas aggregation. This means that residents are automatically enrolled in the program unless they choose to opt-out.*
Over the years, Green residents have benefited from competitive rates through the City's aggregation program, as negotiating for a
larger group often results in favorable pricing. However, aggregation rates may not always be the lowest available. Residents are encouraged to compare options using the PUCO's "Apples to Apples" comparison tool and select the energy supplier that best fits their needs.

Art Inspired by Mental Wellness
This summer, stop by the Central Park Community Hall lobby, 1755 Town Park Blvd, to view our newest public art installation, by local pottery artist Bob Yost, A Change of Art. The mosaic, commissioned through a generous anonymous donor, is made up of tiles created by individuals during our mental health awareness event Change of Art in 2024.
