It’s a place to enjoy an eclectic array of boutique shopping and independent restaurants. It also offers a vibrant nightlife and is the hub for unique indoor-outdoor public and private events. Applications are accepted year-round (due by September 15 for a fall installation). For more information, visit elkgrovecity.org/banners.

Once a weed-infested plot of land, the 1.13-acre parcel at 10025 Hampton Oak Drive has grown over 20-plus years to become the thriving Elk Grove Community Garden and Learning Center (EGCGLC) that it is today. Feeding more than 3,000 families per month and donating more than 5,000 pounds of produce each year, the garden is a valuable resource in making fresh, nutritious organic fruits and vegetables accessible in our community. But the EGCGLC produces more than just fresh fruit and vegetables from its 100-plus plots and orchards. It also includes herb, rose, and perennial gardens; a children’s garden; a demonstration landscape showcasing plants suitable for our local climate that are both eco-friendly and water-wise; and free or low-cost gardening classes. The classes offered explore topics including pollinators, mulching, irrigation, composting, California natives in the landscape, herbs, edibles in the landscape, and much more. This garden offers so much to our community and was recently recognized in Nature’s Path Organic Foods 2023 Gardens for Good Program, earning $7,500 for the garden and its programming.
To schedule a tour of the garden or to learn more, visit elkgrovecommunitygarden.org
Partially used (and sometimes new) paint, cleaners, car care products, pool supplies, lawn and garden products, woodworking supplies, and more line the shelves of the Reuse Room. And they’re all free of charge for Elk Grove residents! Materials are sourced from the Special Waste Collection Center where the Reuse Room is housed. Each month approximately 3,000 people drive through the center to drop off their hazardous materials, and then staff sorts through those materials, identifying items for reuse. About 30 percent of what comes into the facility can be reused, and half of the remaining items are recyclable—diverting hundreds of thousands of pounds of materials from disposal facilities and landfills. This program not only helps reduce disposal costs and save residents money on household products, it also helps the environment.
The Reuse Room is located at 9255 Disposal Lane and is open Sunday to Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit elkgrovecity.org/specialwaste or call (916) 478-2228
Following primary and secondary wastewater treatment, this third stage of treatment further purifies, achieving a higher level of cleanliness to meet or exceed the standards that govern water reuse.
Even after a wet year, we still need all the water resources we can get to ensure a reliable water supply and lessen the likelihood of water restrictions during future droughts—the new Harvest Water project will help. The project will deliver tertiary-treated water from the recently completed EchoWater Resource Recovery Facility, formerly the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, to agriculture and habitat lands in southern Sacramento County. The project will facilitate groundwater recovery, boost sustainable agriculture, strengthen local habitats, and yield near-term benefits to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Use of recycled water in lieu of groundwater will reduce groundwater pumping, thereby increasing groundwater storage and raising groundwater levels to support groundwater-dependent ecosystems. Pipeline construction is anticipated to begin in early 2024 and is estimated to be complete in 2026. For additional project details, scan the QR code or visit sacharvestwater.org
