Signal Adjustments Improve Travel Along Major Corridors

Open November 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024

Temporary Facility Provides Warmth and Winter Sanctuary

The Enhanced Winter Sanctuary is now open and provides shelter for up to 30 people experiencing homelessness. The facility also provides opportunities to connect with social services, resources, and more permanent housing. The Enhanced Winter Sanctuary is operating its first season through March 31, 2024, from the city-owned property located at 9260 Elk Grove Boulevard, the former Rite Aid building. The start of construction on the new Elk Grove Library in mid-2024 means the Enhanced Winter Sanctuary will be relocated in future years. Participants are selected through a referral system. Priority is given to Elk Grove residents or people with a connection to Elk Grove. The Sanctuary only serves adults, while families with minor children will continue to be served by motel voucher programs. Rules and restrictions are enforced by the on-site operator, and Elk Grove Police Department cameras and personnel monitor the site for safety and security. The Enhanced Winter Sanctuary will operate independently of any warming centers that may be activated elsewhere in the city during particularly cold conditions as dictated by criteria established by the Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services (OES). For more information, visit elkgrovecity.org/sanctuary.

Elk Grove Gobble Wobble Family Fun Run Thanksgiving Morning | 9 a.m. 8280 Longleaf Drive

Before gobbling up your Thanksgiving feast, come out and “race for babies” by running, walking, or wobbling your way to the finish line of this family-friendly 5k event. There’s also a quarter-mile fun run for the little turkeys 12 and under. Your participation in the event supports the mission of Chicks in Crisis, a non-profit 501(c)3, helping families cross the finish line through pregnancy, parenting, adoption, and educational services. Recent adjustments to traffic signal timing have improved traffic flow along two of Elk Grove’s busiest roadways—Laguna and Elk Grove Boulevards between Bruceville Road and Interstate 5. These signal synchronization and coordination adjustments allow drivers traveling near the posted speed limit along these corridors to have a higher probability of hitting green lights at intersections. This results in a reduction of stop and go travel, idling at red lights, vehicle emissions, and travel time. Motorists using the lower traffic volume north/south side streets or making left turns along these corridors may experience slightly longer wait times. City staff continue to monitor the timing plans and will make adjustments, as needed. For details, visit elkgrovecity.org/greenwave.
