NEWSLETTER Five SIMPLE Things You Can Do to Improve Race Relations
“Passports to the Grand Tour” Annual Spring Tea Fundraiser Saturday, March 3 | 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Laguna Town Hall (3020 Renwick Ave)
You don’t need your passport to attend this traditional afternoon tea party! All that’s needed is a reservation and $40 ($280 for a table of eight). All proceeds benefit the annual Strauss Festival. The party begins at 1 p.m., when you can browse the uniquely decorated tables, vote for your favorite, and sip some wine. At 2 p.m., sit down and relax with old (and new) friends while enjoying tea, food, and entertainment. For reservations or more information, visit www.straussfestival.com or call the Strauss phone line at 714-2527. Individuals interested in decorating a tea table, please call the phone line or send an email to info@straussfestival.com.
City leaders are committed to working with the community to improve race relations in Elk Grove by promoting the ideals of unity, understanding, and humanity.
Three town hall sessions held in October and November provided opportunities for residents to share their individual experiences and to learn more about how our actions are influenced by our implicit biases. City staff will share the results of a report from those meetings, compiled by the American Leadership Forum, during the January 10 City Council meeting. In the meantime, each of us can do our part to improve race relations today. Here are a few simple things you can do: 1. Share a Smile – Greet one another and extend a simple kindness to those you meet. 2. Practice Mindfulness – Be fully present and aware of your own actions, comments, and behaviors. 3. If You See Something, Say Something – Be proactive about speaking out. Report incidents of hate or racism to authorities so they can be documented and investigated. 4. Invite Someone to Dinner – Share a meal with friends and/or neighbors and learn about a different culture. Share your #DiversityDinner photos with us on Instagram! 5. Teach by Example – Be a positive role model for your friends, family, and others by living a life that exemplifies peace, love, and acceptance for all ethnicities, religions, and lifestyles.
Help local pets (and their families) by donating dog or cat food to the Elk Grove Food Bank and the City’s Animal Services Pet Food Pantry. Your donation will help struggling families keep their pets instead of making the hard choice to surrender or abandon them. Any dog or cat food will be graciously accepted. 6

On “no burn” days when weather conditions can trap smoke near the ground, it is illegal to burn wood, pellets, manufactured logs, or any other solid fuel. Before using your indoor or outdoor fireplace or wood-burning device, residents and businesses within Sacramento County boundaries must check the daily status. Find out whether it’s okay to burn—there are many ways to check: • Call 1-877-NO-BURN-5 (1-877-662-8765) • Follow on Twitter @AQMD • Visit www.AirQuality.org • Download the free Sacramento Region Air Quality app • Sign up to get a daily Air Alert email at www.SpareTheAir.com – input your Sacramento County zip code and check the “Daily Air Quality Forecast” box • Read The Sacramento Bee’s weather page The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District enforces No Burn days. Violations result in fines. To report a complaint or a suspected violation, call Sac Metro AQMD at 1-800-880-9025.
