NEWSLETTER

Elk Grove is Worth the Work

Every street, park, and corner of the city is a reflection of our shared pride. This spring, the City is launching a new Measure E funded campaign—”Elk Grove is Worth the Work”—that promotes the benefits of working together toward a cleaner and greener tomorrow. Look for promotional materials and special projects popping up that promote the positive benefits associated with picking up litter, recycling organic waste, and using alternative transportation around town. Changes today benefit both current residents and future generations. It’s worth the work!

Special Waste Collection Center Celebrates 10 Years of Operation

Earth Day marks the 10-year anniversary of the opening of Elk Grove’s Special Waste Collection Center (SWCC). The facility plays a vital role in offering residents and small businesses a dedicated space for the responsible disposal of hazardous waste, e-waste, tires, and more. Not only does the SWCC keep these materials out of the landfill, it also enables still-usable products to be re-purposed by stocking them on the shelves of the Reuse Room—where residents can get partially used or new products such as paint, cleaners, and more for free. Additionally, the SWCC accepts recyclable materials including cardboard, green waste, Styrofoam, and metal, helping keep these materials out of landfills. The SWCC is open Sunday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the facility, visit elkgrovecity.org/recycle.

Meet Elk Grove’s Climate Ambassadors

Climate Ambassadors are working to inspire, motivate, and engage the community in the City’s climate efforts. A total of 31 local volunteers with a variety of backgrounds and skills have been selected and trained as Elk Grove’s Climate Ambassadors. These individuals are reaching out to their communities to collect feedback and gain a greater understanding of community needs that should be integrated into the Climate Compass—a framework for generating future public policies and decisions. For more information, visit elkgrovecity.org/cap.

Community Exchange Zone Service Seeks to Reduce Transaction Robbery and Fraud

Completing a transaction that you arrange online with someone you’ve never met before can be uncomfortable, as well as present an opportunity for crime. To help with this, the Elk Grove Police Department established a Community Exchange Zone in 2019 for the community to use. For the in-person completion of online transactions, the Exchange Zone is a safe place in front of the police station (8400 Laguna Palms Way) where there is a dedicated camera recording 24 hours a day. The location also serves as a neutral site for child custody exchanges. The Exchange Zone is free to use and is one more way that the Elk Grove Police Department seeks to proactively reduce incidents of robbery, theft, fraudulent transactions, and violent custody disputes.

Self-Care Starts Here

The Citywide Traffic Signal Enhancement and Congestion Relief Project may sound like a mouthful, but the immense project benefits are relatively simple: to provide immediate safety and mobility enhancements. Predominantly grant funded, the project will add state-of-the-art features at more than 100 traffic signals around Elk Grove, many on heavily traveled roads like Elk Grove Boulevard and Laguna Boulevard. Safety elements you can expect to see include new larger traffic signal heads with retroreflective backplates, as well as devices for improved vehicle detection. Although you won’t necessarily notice it, the project also includes an upgraded communication network along portions of the project that will improve the efficiency and performance of the traffic signal system. Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2024. Visit the Public Works Department’s Capital Improvement Program (elkgrovecity.org/cip) webpage to learn more about how these important upgrades will improve the efficiency and safety of our transportation system.

Getting the Height Right Understanding the Rules Around Fence Height Is Key to Avoiding Costly Mistakes

If there’s anything worse than having to pay thousands of dollars for a new fence, it would have to be removing a new fence and replacing it because it violated city code on allowable height or required setbacks. Generally, fences located in your front yard can be no higher than 3 feet, while rear and side yard fencing can be no higher than 7 feet without a building permit and up to 8 feet high with a building permit. Solid fencing or walls higher than 3 feet along a side yard that border a public sidewalk and street right-of-way must be set back 5 feet from the back edge of the sidewalk. Requirements can vary between zoning areas. Before you begin a fence project on your property, consult the Planning Division for guidelines by emailing planner@elkgrovecity.org or calling (916) 478-2265.

Are there construction workers in your yard? Do you know what a Public Utility Easement (PUE) is? The City has created an informational webpage with an interactive map to inform residents about “Who’s Digging in Your Yard?” Utility companies upgrade their infrastructure or perform routine maintenance to ensure the delivery of utilities such as electricity, water, gas, broadband, and telecommunications to homes and businesses. By exploring the website, you can search within the City limits for any work being done. By clicking on a line segment, you can learn the status of the permit, the type of work, who the contractor is, and their customer service phone number in case any questions arise. See who may be digging in your yard—visit elkgrovecity.org/whosdigging.
