Spring Cleaning in Your Home and Around Your Property

As the storms of winter pass, thoughts turn toward spring cleaning. Cleaning up and decluttering your home, garage, or around your property is only part of the process—then what do you do with all the stuff? Get rid of it in a way that either helps other people or keeps it out of the landfill. Whether trash, excess tree and yard debris, recyclables, or household hazardous waste, the city offers several options for proper disposal at no extra cost.

Curbside Pickups

Bulky Waste: Place a pile no bigger than 7’ x 6’ x 4’ (5 cubic yards or the size of a pick-up truck bed) on the curb on your regular trash day. Available to residents three times per year at no additional cost, this service is by appointment only. Schedule a bulky waste pickup by calling Republic Services at 916-635-2500

Cart Service: Load up your recycling, garbage, and organic carts and place them curbside on your regular pick-up day. Each household can have up to three organic waste and recycling carts at no extra charge. Request extra carts by calling Republic Services at 916-635-2500

Special Items: Request a pick-up for e-waste, sharps, needles, lancets, household batteries, and used oil and oil filters by calling Republic Services at 916-635-2500

Drop off at the Special Waste Collection Center (SWCC)

Drop off items that don’t fit into your curbside cart, such as excess tree and yard debris, cardboard, or large appliances. Household hazardous waste, tires, and e-waste are also accepted at the facility. The SWCC is located at 9255 Disposal Lane and is open Sunday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions, call 916-478-2228 (Option 4, on the call menu)

Drop-off at the Elder Creek Transfer Station

Haul your load (up to 5 cubic yards) to the Elder Creek Transfer Station—fees are waived once per year for Elk Grove residents (proof of residency required). The facility is located at 8642 Elder Creek Road in Sacramento. For more information, call 916-387-8425

Cleaning out the Closet?

The SWCC now accepts shoes, clothing, accessories, bed and bath linens, toys, and other similar items. Items will be sorted and recycled. Drop off items in the collection bin during normal operating hours.

New Plan Charts Future Path for Trail Improvements

The recently approved Laguna Creek Inter-Regional Trail Master Plan provides the foundation for completion of the trail, which currently has several gaps. When finished, the trail will provide a transportation alternative for the community to connect with schools, retail, medical services, employment opportunities, and recreational amenities within Elk Grove and beyond. Improvements will result in a cohesive trail system that stretches over 10 miles across the entire width of Elk Grove and links into Sacramento’s trail network. Although many volunteers never seek recognition for the work they do and the value they bring to our community, recognizing them helps energize our community. The Mayor’s Volunteer Awards not only honor those who do the work but also demonstrate that volunteerism comes in many forms, serving as a catalyst to inspire others. To help uplift your community and honor a volunteer, nominate one of them for the Mayor’s Volunteer Awards. Nominations are due by March 10. SeeClickFix ed Thousands of Issues Resolved Through Successful App

Since its debut last year, Public Works crews have fixed nearly 3,000 issues reported by residents through the SeeClickFix Elk Grove mobile app. Issues included potholes, roadside litter, graffiti, roadkill, streetlight outages, code violations, and more. Fixing these issues is important to our quality of life. The app provides a quick and convenient way to report and track progress that is open and transparent to all users. Residents can view comment on, and vote to fix problems submitted by others. There’s even the ability to create your own “watch area” to receive notifications on the progress of all reports submitted in your neighborhood. SeeClickFix Elk Grove is available for free download in the Android and Apple app stores, or access the desktop version at elkgrovecity.org/seeclickfix

Please note that SeeClickFix is not monitored 24/7. Urgent infrastructure issues should be reported to the City’s 24-hour Hotline at 916-687-3005. Examples of urgent issues include flooding, fallen tree/branches in the roadway, traffic signal concerns, or stop sign down/missing. Issues related to public safety should be reported directly to the Elk Grove Police Department at 916-714-5115 (non-emergency) or 911 for emergencies.

Free Tax Services for Seniors

The City of Elk Grove in partnership with AARP Tax-Aide is offering free tax preparation and e-filing services to seniors. Services are provided in person by appointment only at the Elk Grove Aquatics Center (9701 Big Horn Blvd) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the Senior Center of Elk Grove inside The Center at District56 (8230 Civic Center Drive) on Fridays. The Preserve at District56—a Refuge for All

The Preserve at District56 is a special area that preserves the flora and fauna native to Elk Grove. Opened in November 2021, the 28-acre park provides habitat restoration for wetlands, native grasslands, native oak forest, burrowing owl, bats, and migrating birds. Its latest inclusion is a solar-powered pump that taps into an aquifer below and refills the 4.3-acre pond, as needed, based on water loss through evaporation or infiltration. The pond is an important part of the preserve’s ability to provide refuge to a variety of animals. But the preserve isn’t just a refuge for nature, it’s also a unique place for all ages and abilities to explore and take in our natural environment and agricultural history. Park amenities include a historic silo, pistachio orchard, animal habitats, fitness court, walking trails, a wheelchairaccessible playground, picnic tables, and benches. Experience Elk Grove’s largest natural park for yourself, located at 9701 Big Horn Boulevard. Remember to keep wildlife safe, and preserve the habitat by staying on the pathways and out of the pond (including pets).
