Getting Caught Will Cost You: New Fines in Place for Illegal Fireworks

Any firework that flies in the air, darts across the ground, or explodes is considered illegal in California. Every year, these types of fireworks lead to injury, distress, fires, property loss, and even death. To address this growing problem, the Elk Grove Police Department, Elk Grove Code Enforcement, and Cosumnes Fire Department will be out again looking for illegal fireworks and working together to keep our community safe. Those caught will face stiffer fines and penalties in accordance with recently adopted laws.

Salute our colors and celebrate Independence Day with these exciting star-spangled festivities:

Individuals in possession of illegal fireworks will face a hefty fine of $1,000 for each firework found, with no maximum limit. This significant increase in fines is intended to serve as a strong deterrent.

But the crackdown doesn’t stop there. The City is also holding property owners accountable for hosting illegal fireworks activities. This means that not only the individuals lighting the fireworks, but also the property owners or hosts, will be subject to fines for allowing such activities to take place on their premises.

In addition to increased patrolling, the City is utilizing its technology to assist personnel in the field when responding to reports of illegal fireworks. This technology includes its Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Program and Real Time Information Center.

Disregarding our community’s safety regulations will not be tolerated. Illegal fireworks not only pose a risk of injury and property damage but also create unnecessary stress for our residents and pets, particularly those with anxiety or PTSD. By implementing these stricter measures, we aim to protect the well-being of the community and ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities safely and responsibly.

To report illegal fireworks activity, please call (916) 714-5115

Fireworks that do not carry the State Fire Marshal’s “Safe and Sane” seal are illegal in California. Fireworks that carry the seal are legal and sold only between June 28 and July 4.

From Vision to Reality: Zoo Plans Move Forward

Summertime Solid Waste Tips

When separating recyclable and organic materials from your trash (as required by state law), keep these tips in mind:

• Store your food scraps in the fridge or freezer until your service day to avoid odors and decay.

• Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of your food scrap collection container to reduce odors.

• Collect food scraps in plain brown paper bags or BPI certified compostable bags only, if choosing to bag your food scraps.

• Place summertime items in the correct bin: plastic water bottles – recycling; watermelon rinds – organics; water balloon pieces – garbage.

Middle School Educator Makes

Cafeteria Conservation Cool

In partnership with the City of Elk Grove, Toby Johnson Middle School participates in an award-winning program—initiated by home economics teacher Kathleen Albiani—that helps students and educators better understand the organic and food waste recycling process. The program also aims to encourage students to share the knowledge and practices they learn.

A new chapter for Elk Grove and the greater Sacramento region commenced on May 8 when the Elk Grove City Council approved development plans for a new zoo with the Sacramento Zoological Society. This major amenity and cultural attraction will be constructed on 65 acres of vacant land near Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway west of highway 99. Replacing an aging and outdated 14-acre site in Sacramento, the new facility will provide more exhibits and larger spaces for expanded habitats. The zoo will also be a substantial economic asset to our community by providing local jobs, increased tourism for local hospitality businesses, and tax revenue for the city.

Help build a world-class zoo in Elk Grove! Discover how you can help create a state-of-the-art zoo for the animals and for generations of zoo visitors. Scan the QR code for ways you can get involved!

The vote to approve development was only the start of the construction process, which will be completed in phases. The next phase includes the production of construction drawings and fundraising activities by the Sacramento Zoological Society.

Two Centenarians Awarded Keys to the City

While the City of Elk Grove is proud of celebrating our 24th “birthday”, some residents have been celebrating their own birthdays for far longer. Elk Grove recently honored two residents who have each had more than 100 birthdays with a Key to the City. Receiving a Key to the City is the highest honor the City can bestow on an individual. Older adults are often seen as easy targets of crimes such as identity theft, telemarketing fraud, internet fraud, and impersonation scams. Help protect yourself from falling victim to these crimes by participating in the upcoming Fraud Prevention Seminar hosted by the Elk Grove Police Department. You’ll gain knowledge and learn simple yet effective self-defense strategies to increase your power against fraud.

Neighborhoods throughout Elk Grove and across the nation are organizing for the 40th Annual National Night Out. It’s a night when neighbors and first responders team up to host block parties and community gatherings to promote partnerships and camaraderie with the goal of enhancing neighborhood safety While one night of coming together is not a solution to the problems of crime, drugs, and violence, National Night Out celebrates the strength of a community by cultivating the spirit, energy, and determination that is necessary to make our neighborhoods safer throughout the year.
