Selling, Possessing, Transporting, or Using Illegal Fireworks is a Crime City Enforces Zero Tolerance

Any firework that flies in the air, darts across the ground, or explodes is considered illegal in California. Every year, these types of fireworks lead to injury, fires, property loss, and even death. The Elk Grove Police Department and Elk Grove Code Enforcement will be out again looking for illegal fireworks and working together to keep our community safe. In addition to dedicated patrolling, the team is utilizing its technology to assist personnel in the field when responding to reports of illegal fireworks. This technology includes its Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Program and Real Time Information Center.

Report illegal fireworks activity by calling (916) 714-5115 or email fireworks@elkgrovepd.org

National Night Out

Tuesday, August 1

Neighborhoods throughout Elk Grove and across the nation are organizing for the 39th Annual National Night Out. It’s a night when neighbors and first responders team up to host block parties and community gatherings to promote partnerships and camaraderie with a goal of enhancing neighborhood safety. While one night of coming together is not the solution to avert the problems of crime, drugs, and violence, National Night Out celebrates the strength of a community by cultivating the spirit, energy, and determination that is necessary to make our neighborhoods safer throughout the year.

To find out if your neighborhood is hosting a special event, to register your block party, or to invite first responders to your neighborhood event, contact the Elk Grove Police Department Crime Prevention Officers at 916-478-8122 or crimeprevention@elkgrovepd.org

Hosting a Block Party this Summer?

You’ll Need a Permit Closing or limiting access on a public street requires a Street Use Permit. Download the permit application at elkgrovecity. org/publicworkspermits and allow up to 30 days for processing.

New Pavement Treatment Aims to Make the Laguna Trail Cooler

The Laguna Trail between Big Horn Blvd and Elk Spring Way looks a little different since being treated with a special sealant as part of a Cool Trail Pilot Program. The sealant is designed to lower surface temperatures of this exposed section of trail through its lighter color and reflectivity. With little tree cover, normal pavement absorbs, holds, and releases large amounts of heat. The effectiveness of the cool pavement in reducing temperatures, the durability of the treatment, and life cycle costs will be studied during the pilot program.

I this sounds familiar, the City applied a similar treatment to the small parking lot at Old Town Plaza (pictured) in June of 2021 as part of a separate pilot program. Readings at the treated parking lot and untreated parking lots indicated a temperature reduction of between 13 and 22 degrees.

Elk Grove Makes Battery Disposal Easy

Did you know that improper disposal of batteries can cause fires and leach toxic chemicals into the soil and water table, and is even considered a crime in California? There are plenty of reasons you should not throw away batteries in your garbage, especially since Elk Grove makes it so easy to properly dispose of them. Here’s how:

• Place non-rechargeable batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and DD) inside a clear resealable plastic bag.

• Place the bag on top of your recycling cart’s lid during your regular recycle day.

• Republic Services will pick up your batteries FREE of charge, no appointment necessary.

All other types of batteries can be taken to the Special Waste Collection Center for recycling. The facility is located at 9255 Disposal Lane. For more information, visit elkgrovecity.org/specialwaste.

The City does not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission to, access to, or operations of its programs, services, or activities. Questions, concerns, or complaints may be forwarded to the City’s ADA Coordinator.

Elk Grove Sorting Out Organic Waste Recovery Solutions

Last year, Elk Grove joined the mandatory statewide effort to reduce emissions of climate pollutants by diverting food waste from our landfill. The City continues to sort out organic waste recovery solutions to comply with this law (SB 1383). Cities are not only required to offer organic waste recycling but also to create a food recovery program in which businesses like restaurants, grocery stores, schools, and hospitals donate leftover food (e.g., prepared food, packaged foods, produce, etc.) to local shelters and food pantries instead of throwing it away. SB 1383 also requires cities and local governments to re-purpose organic waste into byproducts like compost, mulch, and bio-fuel. Here are some solutions

Elk Grove has developed to meet this mandate:

Elk Grove Food Bank

One of the best ways to reduce the food waste stream is to not waste it in the first place. Elk Grove is creating a food recovery network in which businesses like grocery stores and restaurants donate leftover food that is still safe to eat to shelters and local food pantries. Elk Grove Food Bank is one of the beneficiaries of the recovered food. The food bank maintains a warehouse and employs staff who receive and distribute both nonperishable items and perishables that are in danger of going to waste. By helping to solve a problem and meeting a need, the food bank is another great example of how solving a challenge can lead to a new opportunity.

Local Organics Processing Facility

Elk Grove’s organic waste is hauled to one of several organics processing facilities where it is transformed into nutrient-rich compost. Used in agriculture, landscaping, and home gardens, this compost helps revitalize the land, retains water, and helps native plants thrive. By converting problematic food waste to a useful product, large-scale composting is one way that Elk Grove is meeting the SB 1383 mandate in a productive way.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the food waste diversion and recovery issue—it’s an effort that will evolve over time and involve multiple initiatives. For more information about this effort, visit elkgrovecity.org/recycle

ORGANICS

Elk Grove is required to recover .08 tons of organic waste per resident per year to meet the requirements of SB 1383.
