From the Mayor

While most of us would like to forget about 2020, looking back, some good things did happened last year too. We were able to spend quality time with our families, plus shop, learn, work and play at home.

Buckeye made the transition to providing our services almost entirely online too. Of course, our police, fire, water and public works crews are still coming to work every day to ensure the essential services you rely on are there for you when you need them.

The Community Services Department developed some amazing customized, online content for everyone – preschoolers to seniors. They also creatively found ways to continue celebrating our marquee events with a drive-thru Halloween Carnival and touching video tributes for Memorial Day, Mayor Eric Orsborn Veterans Day and 9-11.

Jackie Meck These are just a few of the reasons Buckeye was listed as the second-fastest growing city in the country over the last ten years. The City Council and staff are committed to ensuring you and your family enjoy a great quality of life living in Buckeye.

Part of ensuring that great quality of life for you is investing in our infrastructure. Miller Road is a perfect example. When complete, the new sewer line currently under construction between Lower Buckeye and Durango will better serve our current residents and business. You’ll also see new traffic signals and major intersection improvements on Miller at both Southern and Broadway roads.

Simply put, construction for these projects will be a mess. We know it and feel your pain because we drive these streets along with you. Then, add in the ADOT I-10 widening project starting this Spring, and that’s a recipe for a whole lot of temporary travel restrictions and delays.

But when construction is over, it will be worth it. Miller Road will have a brand new, professional and finished look to it, especially with the addition of the Five Below Distribution Center at Durango, and the new industrial spec facility, LGE, just south of Five Below.

We have several other significant projects happening all over the city. The new Tartesso Fire Station is complete, and more retail and professional services coming to both Watson and Yuma and Verrado commercial corridors.

You can also count on some version of our family-friendly activities in 2021. We’ll celebrate the Buckeye Air Fair with Aviation Week where you’ll experience everything the Air Fair brings to Buckeye from home. Most importantly, we look forward to seeing you, in person, at all of our other great city events in 2021, as soon as it’s safe to do so.

HIKING YOGA Take a scenic hike in the mountains at Skyline with yoga integrated throughout it. We will be starting and ending with yoga as well as making stops along the way to do mini-sequences of poses. This is a beginner level for all aspects so everyone is welcome. Kids The B.A.S.E. program provides a safe and exciting place for children enrolled in Kindergarten – 8th grade, for out-of-school time. The mission of the program is to provide an environment that keeps youth safe while preparing them for success. Our creative programming will enhance self-confidence, self-expression, social skills and cognitive skills while keeping youth physically active. B.A.S.E. is located at various Buckeye Elementary School District campuses and is state licensed and regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Program sites are open on early release days but closed on national holidays or when school campus is closed.

KID’S B.A.S.E. CONNECTS Kid’s BASE Connects is a program that will provide a safe environment for school-age children to attend while they are doing distance learning.

Staff will assist children in logging into their devices and provide support. Children are encouraged to bring headphones for their devices to avoid disrupting other participants. Staff will also provide recreation activities throughout the day. Program is limited to 25 children so sign up early. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day at no additional cost from St. Mary’s Food Bank, Kid’s Café meals.

$25 one-time, non-refundable registration fee per child.

(Registration fee waived when enrolled in auto bill pay.) Children must be enrolled in grades K – 8th. Registration packets include an emergency form, discipline policy and an attendance contract. A copy of the child’s immunization records must be provided at time of registration. Registration packets are available online at buckeyeaz.gov/rec or at the Dr. Saide Recreation Center, 1003 E. Eason Ave. Registration fee plus first week of care are due at time of registration. Registration must be completed at least 48-hours prior to start date. Enrollment in auto pay must be complete at time of registration in order to have registration fee waived.

Lil Squirts is virtual! Parents will be able to choose from 3 time slots which will be 1 hour each. Time slots will be capped at 12 participants each and you can only sign up for one. Lil’ Squirts Preschool is the perfect environment for your child to learn, grow and make friends as they participate in various activities such as arts and crafts, group games, creativity development, music, imaginative play and developing language skills.

Lil’ Squirts Preschool program is a licensed program and is located at the Dr. Saide Recreation Center (1003 E. Eason Ave). Registration is first-come, firstserved. The program will be closed for national and school holidays as well as for Spring Break.

Participation in youth sports has proven to build self-esteem, promote teamwork and develop the body as well as the mind. This program emphasizes FUN and de-emphasizes winning at all costs. Every child is guaranteed playing time and the game is taught in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Team formulation is created on a first-come, firstserved basis according to age and nearest school. Practice times, days, and locations are determined by the head volunteer coach. Games will be held week nights and Saturdays between 4/5 – 5/1. Schedule is subject to change.

VOLUNTEER COACHES ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS!

They NEED you! VOLUNTEER COACHES are the backbone to youth sports and make our youth sport programs possible. Please join us in providing a positive and fun-filled sports experience for the children in our community.

Each team needs a coach to conduct practices and direct players during games. Assistant coaches and team parents provide valuable support teaching skills, monitoring players, organizing activities and much more. All volunteers who provide direct services to children must be fingerprinted and pass a background check. Upon completion of a successful season, volunteer coaches will receive a $50.00 credit to use towards future City of Buckeye programs. BLENDED CPR & FIRST AID Increase your First Aid knowledge in topics such as bleeding, shock, and burns and learn Adult, Child, and Infant CPR. This blended learning course involves 2.5 hours of at-home web-based learning and 1.5 hours of in-person classroom training. This course satisfies OSHA and state childcare licensing requirements. 2-year certifications will be issued after the success completion of both the web-based learning and in-person skills portion. CHILDCARE & BABYSITTING SAFETY This course is an introduction to supervising, caring, and keeping children and infants safe in babysitting settings. The program provides fundamental information in the business of babysitting, proper supervision, basic caregiving skills, and responding properly to ill or injured children or infants. Participants will learn diapering, feeding, with an introduction to CPR & First Aid. Students receive a two year Child and Babysitting Safety certification upon successful completion of the class and a workbook (included).

DAILY MEAL PROGRAMS The Buckeye Senior Program offers two meal programs for residents age 60+.

• The congregate lunch program is served Monday – Friday from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., and is available via curbside pickup. Recommended contribution is $3.00; guests under 60 are $5.00. A monthly menu is available online.

• Home delivered meals are provided to individuals that are home bound. It is recommended that home delivered meal clients contact the Area Agency on Aging Senior Help-Line at (602) 264-HELP(4357). In addition, the Buckeye Senior Program offers private pay home delivered meals for residents aged 60+ for a cost of $5.00 per meal.

Sanitized bingo cards can be pickedup at the Senior Center, 201 E. Centre Ave., on weekdays between 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with a reservation made no later than 1:30 a.m. on game day. 1. Reserve your material online at: http://buckeye. polarislibrary.com, or call 623-349-6300 (Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and staff will reserve materials for you.

2. After you are notified that your items are ready, you may pick them up at your designated library. Check the library website for up to date information on picking up materials.

The Downtown Library and the Coyote Branch Library are open for Express Service, Monday – Friday, 11 a.m.

– 5 p.m. Express Service includes the following services and guidelines: 1. Grab & Go material selection with shelf-checkout service, material selection limited to 1 hour.

2. Limited computer use – sessions are limited to 1 hour per day per customer, first come, first served basis. Self-serve printing, faxing and copying are also available for a fee.

3. Lounge areas, room rentals, study areas and outdoor patios will remain closed.

4. Customers are required to wear masks and respect social distancing guidelines while in the library.
