Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings and salutations, fine readers of mine. Thanks for bearing with Toots each week - be I boring or exciting, sharp or dumber-than-dumb, be I ever so humble or disgustingly arrogant. This week I think Toots shall climb upon her soapbox. Wouldn’t it be a delightful (delightful - who do I think I am? Mary Poppins, I suppose - with this word) experience if everyone just said exactly what they meant? You know, like a simple yes or no. Why dance all the way around the mulberry bush and still not give a straightforward answer. Why the game playing? No, Toots has not been personally wronged (bet that’s what you all were thinking). Just a keen observation by your ever observant Toots. She is involved in several business ventures and meets a fine array of different people during the course of her travels. And lately she notices that a great majority of people are not able to utter a fundamental yes or no.

Why do things need to be so complicated lately? Why must people make so many excuses? Life is way too short! Say what you mean and then stand by it. What’s up with all this wishy washiness? “Toots, where do you come up with these words and phrases?” asks Madame Editor. Why, Toots once read that if a person speaks out with a word (that does not exist and is not found in the dictionary) and that the other party knows what the first party means - that in itself makes it a word. Yes, Madame Editor, I realize that this is a very complicated sentence, not at all grammatically (adverb, not an adjective as it is used here) correct. Sorry, but that is Toots for you. Plus, think about it - history is in the making. Toots comes up with all these non-words and goofy phrases and guess what - my fine readers understand me. Together we are creating words. Where was I? Toots is so easily led astray. And

De La Salle football players make college commitments being led astray is one of my greatest joys! It’s a great big world out there and Toots intends to be led astray when at all possible. But don’t tell my family - they like to think that she is on that straight and narrow road. Okay, you got me! I bet that you readers are thinking, “Wow, she is really struggling this week!” Right you are! Lots going on in this crazy world of mine. When Madame Editor takes a holiday, Toots will give you some of the real scoops. Lions and tigers and adventures, oh my! Lesson of the week: Toots can also be ever so redundant - repeating something and therefore unnecessary. Beware of her very lazy days. And today is one of them. If you think you are experiencing déjà vu you might be. Or you just may be reading a ‘recycled’ column. Yep, Toots got a bit lazy this week and pulled up an old column. And bad part about it - this column was rather recent, not even an “oldie but goodie”. Some words, sentences, and thoughts were changed to protect the innocent (or was it to fool Madame Editor?) But hey, it has been nice out this week and Toots kinda lost track of her duties. The mind wanders and the body follows - what can I say? ‘til next week... Toots Malone

De La Salle Institute, 3434 S. Michigan, proudly announces that four members of its football team have made college commitments. During a Signing Day ceremony held at De La Salle, offensive tackle Jamarco Jones signed with Ohio State, offensive tackle Aaron Roberts signed with Syracuse, running back Mikale Wilbon signed with Ne-

braska and linebacker Anthony Pierce signed with Northwestern. Operating behind Jones (North Kenwood) and Roberts (Wrightwood), Wilbon (South Shore) rushed for 1,128 yards and 16 touchdowns on 97 carries in the 2013 season. As for Pierce (Greater Grand Crossing), he was one of De La Salle’s leading tacklers with 55. “De La Salle is very proud of each of these young men,” De La Salle athletic director Tom White said. “These are great opportunities for them to further their educations at outstanding institutions of higher learning and to pursue their goals of playing Division I college football.” Pictured: Jamarco Jones, Aaron Roberts, Mikale Wilbon, Anthony Pierce.

Verizon wireless customers are new scam targets

Scammers are now using Caller ID spoofing technology and a lookalike website to scam Verizon Wireless users. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) urges consumers to avoid sharing personal information with callers who claim to be from Verizon. Consumers report receiving calls allegedly from Verizon’s “Techni-

The web address contains the word “Verizon” in the URL name and the value of the voucher” When you go to the website, it looks very similar to the official Ve-

rizon site, with the same Verizon logo and colors. The site asks you to “Verify My Account” by entering your cellphone number, Verizon ID and social security number. Here are ways to spot and avoid this phishing scam: Watch for lookalike URLs. Be wary of sites that have Verizon as a subdomain of another URL (i.e. “verizon.scamwebsite.com” or part of a longer URL (i.e. “verizonvoucher105.com”). Consider how the business normally reaches you. Beware of a departure from the normal routine. Verizon Wireless typically sends its customers text messages, so be wary of a phone call. Be extremely suspicious of any site wanting complete personal information. Most services and businesses that require personal identification already have the information from when you originally signed up, especially if the business is sending the message to you. They should not need your social security number or credit card number again. Contact the business: Always call the business’s customer support line to check the legitimacy of the offer. Be sure to find the phone number on your bill or by a web search. Don’t believe what you see. The website that scammers created for this scam looks amazingly similar to the real Verizon Wireless site. Ripping off logos, colors and graphics online is easy. Personal Stats: Husband, Michael. Daughters, Michelle & Christina. What Do You Do For A Living? As a Professional School Counselor at Thomas Kelly High School I have the opportunity to work with students who are transitioning from the protective environment of childhood into the adult world of responsibility and independence. It is a great joy to watch someone learn about the many opportunities available to them and to set goals, apply to college, and work toward a future filled with potential. How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career? I grew up in Garfield Ridge and worked downtown after high school graduation. I began my career as a counselor late in life. Receiving my Masters Degree after my children had completed school demonstrated that I was not too old to learn and that I could still serve as a role model for them and for their peers. Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? Back in the time when I was involved with the Gabriel Richard Leadership Institute, we had a rally cry: “I can’t lose....because I have faith, courage, and enthusiasm!” These three traits have pushed me forward through many challenges and are my foundation. I encourage my students to think about their obstacles and to use faith in their abilities, the courage to try to change themselves and/or their environment, and to pursue their goals with enthusiasm. When Are You The Happiest? My husband and I love to travel. We have visited all 48 of the contiguous United States and are enamored with the National Park system. We have also traveled to Central America, Europe and Southeast Asia. Anything Else To Add? In addition to working at Kelly, I am the past-President of the Archer Road Kiwanis (ARK) and the incoming Lieutenant Governor for Division 3 of the Illinois-Iowa District of Kiwanis International. Kiwanis is a global organization dedicated to serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time. Kelly High School and Curie High School have Key Clubs sponsored by the Archer Road Kiwanis and there are also K-Kids and Builders Clubs in several elementary schools. Our Kiwanis family is dedicated to service and leadership. Archer Road Kiwanis meetings take place on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the Home Run Inn on Archer. ARK’s next event is our 27th annual Fashion Show at the Mayfield, 6072 S Archer, on April 6th. Proceeds will benefit Kiwanis Club for Special Children and other youth activities throughout the community. There are numerous raffles and some terrific prizes! No one goes home empty handed! Support The Arts: Osculate A Musician

On Monday, 3/31, I had the HealthCare.gov experience. I spent hours on the computer staring at my locked account page. And then 2 more hours on hold before being disconnected. But I used my hold time wisely! I found a copy of the 2013 Old Farmer’s Almanac. Among the many things I learned were the benefits of osculating. If that sounds dirty or perverted, it isn’t. Osculation is the act of kissing. And kissing exercises your facial muscles. A passionate kiss can exercise as many as 34 different muscles. And keeping those muscles well-toned can help you maintain a more

youthful appearance. Of course, that’s something we all want. But in the music industry Youth Reigns. Kissing produces extra saliva, which in turn produces immunoglobins. These wash bacteria away from our teeth, thus preventing tooth decay. A nice, healthy smile is something we all want. But once again, it is particularly important to an entertainer as he tries to connect with his audience. Kissing produces a number of hormones including adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. If these names sound similar to some

powerful drugs that’s because they are powerful drugs in their own right. They can make you feel good! Real good! All of which reminds me of a bumper sticker pasted on the case of one of my oldest guitars. “Support The Arts: Kiss A Musician.” By osculating a musician you may be helping them maintain a youthful appearance and a pleasant smile, thus helping them in their career. And by giving them that great natural high you may help prevent substance abuse and addictions, an occupational hazard of musicians. Support the Arts! And do yourself some good in the process!
