The Chicago Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Check in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District at 6450 S. Western Ave. The Roadside Safety Check will commence at 8 p.m. on March 28th and end at 4

conducted year round to ensure drivers are operating their vehicles safely,” said Supt. Garry F. McCarthy. “This is part of an ongoing strategy to keep the city streets safe for Chicago’s residents and commuters.”

The students in Mrs. Cerven’s fourth grade math class of St. Daniel the Prophet School, 5337 S. Natoma, recently had the opportunity to create their own math board game. The students had to create a game that helped them to practice all of the concepts that the fourth graders were working on. Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings and Salutations! Toots is experiencing difficulties this week. So when isn’t she? True. Toots seems to lead a very complicated life. Complicated, but damned good! There is never a dull moment. I may whimper and whine about “poor ol’ me” but Toots wouldn’t have it any other way. Madame Editor is not always cooperative when it comes to Toots. Usually she limits my space to nothing. This week she says, “Guess what Toots! You have more space than usual.” Toots, not at all prepared, cries, “Say it ain’t so.” Toots usually attacks her column on Monday morning. Well, this week life got in the way. Again! Here it is Tuesday afternoon and Toots is speechless (and brainless?). Okay, don’t everyone jump up and down and think that the useless drivel has finally

come to an end. Never will. Your friend Toots is a fountain of foolish information and the consummate teller of tales. Obviously, Toots needs to get out more, maybe hit an open stage or three with Significant Other (SO).“Open stages” (or “open mics”) are usually held in bars. It is where a group of musicians go to play. Greatest thing you are treated to a fine array of music - covers and originals. Musicians range from professionals to pure amateurs. That’s the fun in it - you get the pleasure of watching these musicians grow. Toots may even belt out a tune or two. Why not? Many moons ago, Toots would frequent an “open stage” at Touch of Green every Monday night. She did this in excess of two years and got to know almost all the musicians. Toots is a party animal (say it aint’ so) and would

arrive at 8:30 p.m. and would close the bar. Well anyhow... a couple of the musicians would always ask Toots to get up and sing. No way! Then they decided to bet her that she wouldn’t have the courage. Never bet Toots - that is one thing she can not turn down. Plus, never question her courage she has some mighty big (sorry, almost forgot that this is a family paper). Yes, Madame Editor, I have once again gobbled up my allotted space. And thank you, Old Benevolent One, for giving me the extra space. Long story short - Toots took the bet. She figured this was her one shot at glory and she wanted the most perfect song. She chose the Beatles “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”. The song is basically about a serial killer. How appropriate. So Toots arrives on “The Night” at 8:30 p.m. By 9:00 p.m. she has downed three beers and was still counting down. Liquid courage at its finest. When her turn arrives, she is on her seventh beer and all shyness has departed. She proudly desecrated the song (but did it) and collected her wagers. A true legend in my own mind! Lesson of the week: Live a little - get out and do. Life is way too short! ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Her Second Chance At Life

by Ed Kostro Author of ‘Through Katrina’s Eyes: Poems From an Animal Rescuer’s Soul’ Inspired by Ella, the dog that was finally caught after living on the streets of Posen for over two years. Scared to death when caught, and now already a much different dog.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, A smile, a kind word, a listening ear, or the smallest act of kindness; All of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ~Leo Buscaglia It was just one short week ago That she was starving and afraid She cringed, when I tried to pet her Her change of heart has made my day She was out on the street for over two years She had been abandoned, to fend for herself She had now forgotten, what kindness felt like She was invisible to most, in her left behind hell A week ago, when she was caught, she trembled Not knowing that we meant to help, not harm her But a week of tender loving care and compassion Turned her life around, and made old feelings stir When my spouse and I drove her to her new home She already knew, that her life was about to change She gently crawled into my wife’s lap and kissed her As if to thank her, for her second chance at life today Now, she’s ready to give human beings another chance Now, she is willing to try again, at her new foster home Now, she is eager to become the being, that she once was No longer forsaken, starving, homeless, or horribly alone And sadly, there are many abandoned pets, just like her At all the over-crowded shelters, in our neck of the woods Please consider giving one of them, a second chance at life And showing them that in this world, there is still some good

Now I always like to go to bed At usually around nine If just a couple of minutes later That would still be fine. While it seems like here lately I don’t make it until ten Some times as late as eleven Maybe not even then. Now when I go on my computer To write a poem or two I don’t bother watching the clock I want to get through. Wrapped up in what I’m doing I just lose track of time And before I care what time it is I have to make it rhyme.

Rose Petrucelli

What Do You Do For A Living? I am a second grade teacher at St. Daniel the Prophet School. How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career? I honestly always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I even said that to the audience on my kindergarten graduation. I was a student at St. Daniels from K-8. The whole idea of learning something new every day and being able to explore the world with the help of my teachers really intrigued me. What is the best advice that you ever received? My father once told me something that I will live by forever. He said, “There are three different kinds of people in this world. There are subordinate, ordinary, and extra ordinary people. It is up to you which one of those people you choose to be in life and the thing that separates those people from one another is that little “extra”. If you work hard, you can be extra ordinary and you will do fine.” What Else Do You Enjoy? I really enjoy animals. I love my cat of 17 years. When I was a teenager, I organized a service project to donate towels, food, and toys to a local animal shelter. Since then, I visit animal shelters from time to time just to play with the animals. Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration? My mother and father are my inspiration. My mother is a wonderful mother who is always there to help me with anything I need. She has a very bubbly personality and warm heart. Furthermore, my father is my inspiration as well because he came from very humble beginnings and was determined to grow up and support a family of his own someday. He did just that with a lot of determination and hard work. He overcame many obstacles in life. My father is the foundation to our family. Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? If I could give one piece of advice for the youth today, it would be to grab life by the horns and get an education, utilize it, stand up for what you believe in, vote in the elections, have fun, have a faith, be friendly, spend time with your loved ones and friends, smile, be spontaneous, make room for dessert, take a vacation, and most importantly- follow your dreams. Anything Else To Add? St. Daniel the Prophet School is located at 5337 So. Natoma Avenue. We are a Catholic elementary school of the Archdiocese of Chicago. You can check out the school at stdan.net or on its Facebook page. Feel free to call 773-586-1225 for more information.

Some nights I just can’t finish it And I have to go to bed There’s too many thoughts I get I need to clear my head.

The Emmy-nominated film offers an intimate look at three of these greeters as they confront the universal losses that come with aging and rediscover their reason for living. To register call 312-747-6094.

When I get up the next morning First I put the coffee on Then I will get on my computer And 1, 2, 3, I’ll be gone. There are days I’ll write 2 or 3 Depends on what I got 9 poems was the most I wrote It sounds like quite a lot.

If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth.

Berklee College of Music in Boston on 5/10. Just when I thought Rolling Stone magazine had restored themselves to some semblance of credibility in the rock music world, they put Justin Bieber on the cover of their 2/28 issue. Granted, Bieber is news, as the world watches him self-destruct. But it’s a story for the tabloids, and unworthy of coverage by Rolling Stone. Speaking of unworthy of the cover of Rolling Stone, Kiss will receive that honor for the first time on 3/28, 40 years after their debut. Yes, I know there are a lot of

Kiss fans out there. I don’t begrudge you your pleasure in your favorite band. But do they really belong on the cover of Rolling Stone and, worse yet, as inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year? The success of Kiss was built on their costumes, pyrotechnics, vomiting blood on-stage, and spectacle. And, hey, my hat is off to them-they worked hard and made themselves millionaires. That works for me. But musically they were never better than second rate. It was always about the spectacle first, and the music second. And that doesn’t work for me. There seems to be some bad blood in the original band. Ace Frehley and Peter Criss will not be performing at the induction ceremony. www.KenQualter.com

St. Rene students work on writing code

The St. Rene Goupil 8th grade students are currently working on writing code in their brand new computer lab. The students have been going to the lab to work on coding for an extra hour each week in order to be introduced to computer science. The students have completed activities through writing code, or instructions, in order for a game to be played, lines to be drawn, or figures to move across the screen. Students were even asked to hand write a code for a partner in order to reach a location in the school outside of the classroom by using symbols and numbers only. The goal is for students to create their own game or application by the end of the school year. St. Rene School is located at 6340 S. New England.

He then ordered a clerk to empty both cash registers, saying, “I don’t want to hurt you. I just want the money--not your money, but theirs (GameStop’s).” The cashier, a 37-yearold Clearing woman, complied and put cash on the counter. He fled out the front door. He is described as a black man age 20-30, 6’0 to 6’3 and 170-200 pounds, brown eyes, dark complexion, wearing a black hoody and dark-colored jeans. *** Burglars entered a home near 54th and Kedvale and stole an iPad and assorted jewelry. Reportedly missing were a wedding ring, a number of video games, a number of prescription medications, and $400 cash. The CPD incident report gave no indication on whether the suspect had been located and arrested. *** Burglars pried open the back door of a home near 48th and Kilpatrick and ransacked two bedrooms. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 77-yearold man, when he came home from a medical appointment at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 17. He told police that he found empty jewelry boxes on the floor. Chicago Police seize more than 1,000 illegal guns Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy have announced that officers have seized more than 1,000 illegal firearms in 2014, underscoring the need for stronger state and federal laws to keep illegal guns from getting on the street in the first place. “The high number of guns we recovered in the first three months of the year tells two stories,” said Mayor Emanuel. “It speaks to the professionalism and capacity of our police officers. But it is also a stark reminder that our gun laws are the miss-

nals carrying illegal guns. The outcome often is offenders returning to the street in a short period of time to become victims or offenders again. Emanuel and McCarthy called for five steps to truly address gun violence: 1) requiring the reporting of the transfer of guns, 2) the creation of a three-year sentence for illegal gun possession and truth in sentencing for gun crimes in Illinois, 3) a federal universal background checks for gun sales, 4) a federal ban on assault weapons, and 5) a federal ban on high capacity magazines.

On Tuesday, March 18, St. Laurence High School in Burbank, the place “Where Leadership Begins,” held its second blood drive of the 2013-14 school year. The school used the services of LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center. A total of 50 units was collected from the students and friends of St. Laurence that day, exceeding the goal that was set. “It was a worthwhile and a successful day. Our school family always responds to the need,” said Laura Baldwin, the school’s Activities Director. “I wanted to help out when I heard we were having this blood drive,” said junior Sean Wedel (Chicago, Scottsdale). “I’m happy to see that many of my classmates participated, too.” Pictured: Junior Sean Wedel donates blood in the school library.

BBB issues utilities scam warning

On the heels of the bitter cold temperatures that have hit Chicago and Northern Illinois, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is issuing a warning on scam artists that are targeting individual consumers and businesses with the false claim that their utility bills are delinquent and their service is in danger of being disconnected.

The BBB has received calls from concerned consumers and businesses who state that they have received calls from individuals claiming to be from either ComEd or Nicor making demands that they immediately make payment on their alleged delinquent accounts. Whether the payment demand is allegedly for

ComEd or Nicor, the callers ask that the consumers purchase a gift card or a Green Dot card and then call back with the card information to make a payment. If you suspect that the call is fraudulent or you may be a victim of a scam you should contact your local police department. For more information, visit http://www.bbb.org.

Yet where physical pain is involved, we ought to take the greatest care not to cause needless anguish to animals.
