Beatles Karaoke presented at Library

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first visit to the United States, the Chicago Public Library invites fans, young and old, to relive “Beatlemania” by singing their favorite Beatles songs before a live audience. This karaoke style event takes place on January 24 at 12:15 p.m., in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium (Lower Level) at the Har-

old Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St. What’s your favorite: Michelle, Hey Jude, Come Together or maybe some other Beatles hit? To encourage participation and a fun time for all, the Library will provide the lyric sheets for approximately 60 Beatles songs and the CD music track for each song. Because the Music Information Center would like

Police recovered 6,813 Illegal guns in 2013

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy announced Chicago Police seized 6,813 illegal guns in 2013, underscoring the challenge unlawful firearms pose to public safety and the city’s continued progress in reducing crime and violence. “As we look forward to 2014 and beyond, the best way to save people’s lives in a city where every year more than 80% of murders happen by gunfire is to enact reasonable laws that keep illegal guns out of our communities,” said Supt. McCarthy.

Every year Chicago Police recover more illegal guns than officers in any city in the country, a factor of lax federal laws and insufficient state laws stopping straw purchasing and reporting the transfer of guns in Illinois and surrounding states. The size of Chicago’s illegal gun market doesn’t just impact gun recoveries – it helps drive the murder rate. Without a state law requiring real jail time for criminals carrying illegal guns, offenders can quickly be back out on the street. In 2013, there were

169 people involved in a murder or shooting, who would not have been on the streets of Illinois had a 3-year minimum sentence for illegal gun possession been enforced. Chicago closed 2013 at historic lows in crime and violence. The year saw the fewest murders since 1965, the lowest murder rate since 1966 and the lowest overall crime rate since 1972. The progress is a result of the City’s strategic policing, greatly expanded investments in prevention efforts, and a close partnership with communities.

Ed Kozak is celebrating his 30th year of refereeing youth football in the Chicagoland area. Ed, a resident of the Garfield Ridge community in Chicago, has done the vast majority of his contests locally, with teams from the high school level Chicago Catholic League and the Catholic Grade School Conference (CGSC). This contest took place at Hale Park on the southwest side in the Clear-

ing neighborhood. The schools involved were two junior varsity teams (5th and 6th graders) from the CGSC. The teams that participated were St. Ann’s of Channahon and St. Rene from Clearing. “It’s quite an honor to have worked so many years in this great sport. I always love the atmosphere, the spirit of the teams, and the competition between the schools. I also appreciate the exer-

cise that I get each time I officiate,” said Kozak. “I hope to continue my reffing avocation for many years to come,” he added. Pictured before kickoff of the first game of Ed’s 30th year of refereeing are the St. Ann Golden Eagles (white jersey tops) and the St. Rene Raiders (green jersey tops). Lend Me Your Ear... Word up (what’s going on), readers? Sorry, I mean greetings, readers! Me thinks that Toots has been hanging around with the wrong age group lately and is beginning to talk like them. I’m trying to keep this real (serious) for you readers, but lol (laugh out loud). Your loyalty to this column is spun (cool) and Toots believes that this is butter (something good). So, girlfriends (female friends) and bros (male friends) let’s get with some marinating (relaxing). You know that Toots is always down with that (part of the crowd). Flash! (I just said some really stupid things!) Ease up (calm down) Madame Editor! I am already freakin’ (getting really nervous) and certainly Toots would hate to go postal (insane). By the way, Old Great and Grand One, you are certainly looking glam (good) for yourself today. Why I could almost say, “You’re quite the Babe (good looking woman). Why do you always

have to dis (disrespect) Toots? I am just about to pearl (leave) this place. Don’t always hate on me (be nice). I am fiendin’ (needing) some reassurance of my worth here. Readers, what do you think? Toots has hit the new-fangled world. I remember back to my youth (not that far past) and everything was groovy. I wore my eye liner, headband and hoop earrings with the best of them. Okay, Madame Editor, on to the lesson of the week. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Way back when, our parents thought we were wacky and now here we are - that generation. They were nuts over our long hair and bell bottoms. We look at the kids today and are horrified over their piercings, tattoos, baggy pants and Mohawks. Whatever! Most of us survived. So my lesson is to ease up! Let them enjoy their time - but make sure that you are watching that it is carried out in a safe way.

Stay in tune with your children and open your ears - let them know that they can talk with you. That’s why I’ve provided some definitions for you. No, it’s not a foreign language, it’s just teen talk. I think my space is just about used up, so I shall continue marathoning (watching an entire TV series in a very short period of time). And no, Toots does not watch Chick Flicks (warm and fuzzy movies). Let the kids enjoy their “own” language. Surprise them with your mastery of the slang. Disclaimer: The definitions provided are simply Toots’ interpretations. If you come out with one of them and your child rolls on the floor in laughter, don’t blame Toots. Peace to you all. Yes, this column could be considered way out. It will most likely get even more whacked (crazy). Note: Toots desperately needs some adult company. Out of sight, man! ’til next week... Toots Malone

Calling local filmmakers to submit work for public screening

A Little Lost Puppy

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh

Calling all filmmakers: the Chicago Park District is accepting submissions of films for Chicago On Screen through Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Chicago On Screen is the Chicago Park District’s new initiative to enhance offerings of the annual Movies in the Parks series by featuring a selection of locally produced independent features, documentaries and shorts that focus on Chicago. All submissions will be evaluated by a selection panel that will choose between 6-10 features and shorts to be presented as part of the popular summer series. If schedules allow, selected films will be presented in the neighborhoods in which they were filmed or have specific significance. In addition, selected filmmakers will be awarded up to $500. “The Movies in the Parks series is part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks initiative that features cultural activities in the parks from local artists,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly. “Similarly, Chicago On Screen will showcase our local film talent right in the neighborhoods that inspired them.” Films submitted must be the original work of the person submitting and must have been produced in the past three years. Films must have a demonstrable and significant connection to Chicago or its neighborhoods and communities. For an entry form and information visit www.chicagoparkdistrict.com. The Chicago Park District’s 14th annual Movies in the Parks series will feature screenings of current and classic movies in citywide parks this summer as part of the Night Out in the Parks initiative. Thanks to large audiences and positive feedback during its inaugural year, the 2014 encore season will feature 1,000 events – up from 750 in 2013 – bringing entertainment and cultural experiences to Chicago’s neighborhoods. Full schedules to be announced in late spring. For more information, call 312-742-PLAY or visit www.chicagoparkdistrict.com.

I was looking out my window A couple of days ago When I saw a little lost puppy Walking in the snow. He was looking all around him Just like he was lost And I knew he would be cold We just had a frost. Kept running back and forth And looking in at me As if he wanted to come in To keep me company. And just the cutest little thing That I have ever seen Looked like he was a Chihuahua He was nice and clean.

What Do You Do For A Living? I teach 5th grade Religion, Social Studies, Science, and Math, as well as 4th grade Social Studies and Science at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, 3741 W. 62nd Street on Chicago’s south side. How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career? I enjoyed tutoring in my high school, St. Ignatius College Prep, and then my senior year I volunteered at the GED program called Westside Employment Education Center. I knew teaching was something I could do, because it is something that I love to do. One Of The Biggest Events In Your Life? For the past 6 years, I have attended and sung at the “Do-it-yourself Messiah” and have had a blast each time. I look forward to it each year. There is a volunteer orchestra and they hire some professional instrumentalists and soloists, but the choir is the audience (between 800/1000 singers) in the theater. It’s a massive sound from the choir, and hilarious when everyone turns their pages at once! The Best Advice That You Ever Received? Pray every day. When Are You The Happiest? When I can use my imagination, pray, and sing. Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration? My co-teacher when I was in college, Gwyn Skrobul, is my inspiration as a teacher. During student teaching (co-teaching), I learned so much and found so many great ideas to use with students. Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? Keep a relationship with God. Just because it seems that others don’t think about God or count God as important doesn’t mean that is the best way to live. Since high school, I discovered each day how wonderful it is to know God and live the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. Anything Else To Add? I teach at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School and I am very excited to be part of this community. St. Nicholas of Tolentine School will be having an Open House on January 26th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We provide a quality education for children from preschool through 8th grade in a safe environment. We offer “Before and After School care”, physical education, music, band, chorus and Religion classes and an education taught by experienced staff. St. Nicholas School is an Archdiocesan approved school and is accredited by the State of Illinois. To learn more, contact the school office at 773-735-0772. Please visit the website at www.stnickschool.com or follow us on Facebook.

Now I wanted to bring him in I wondered if I should He must belong to some one In the neighborhood. And I suppose they miss him It won’t be very long Til they are out there looking To keep him is wrong. But before I can turn around A boy came running up Bent over to get the Chihuahua And ran off with the pup.

Michael Boehm named De La Salle’s Varsity Head Football Coach

Music Corner by Ken Qualter Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers died on 1/3/14. The son of a coalminer from Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, he was born in Chicago on 1/19/39. His father moved the family here to pursue a music career. Phil and his older brother Don got their musical start performing on the radio with their parents in Iowa before school. Phil and Don evolved into a duo and moved to Nashville as teens. Their close harmony style was a hallmark of country and bluegrass vocals, but they were the first to apply it to a more pop type of music. Chet Atkins was an early supporter and got them their first recording contract. In 1951, the second single they recorded, “Bye Bye

Bye Bye Phil

Love”, went to #2 on the charts and sold over a million copies. They went on to have 35 Top 100 singles, the most ever by a duo. 26 were in the Top 40. They also had 12 Top 40 albums. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 by Neil Young. Young noted that every band he was ever in tried to sing like the Everlys and failed. They are also members of The Country HOF, The Vocal Group HOF, and the Rockabilly HOF. They received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in ’97. Phil and Don were almost as famous for fighting as for singing. They broke up on-stage in 1973 and didn’t talk for a decade. Their 1984

comeback, “EB84”, featured the Top 10 hit “On The Wings of a Nightingale”, penned for them by Paul McCartney. Their influence as vocalists was huge. They were an inspiration to the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, the Mamas & Papas, The Hollies, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and the Bee Gees, among countless others. Lennon and McCartney once called themselves “The Foreverly Brothers”. They were a part of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Old Friends” Tour in 2003. Phil also established a successful guitar string company, Everly Music Company. Phil Everly died of COPD at the age of 74. www.KenQualter.com

The IRS hopes everyone has a system to manage the documents needed to prepare their taxes before individual return processing starts Jan. 31. “We should have all our tax records in one location,” said IRS spokesman Joe Munoz. “It’s highly important to keep good records and avoid any misplaced receipts or forgetting some expenses that could qualify as deductions.” Individuals should keep tax records that support any deductions or credits claimed on their tax

return. That includes bills, receipts, invoices, mileage logs, canceled or imaged checks and other records. In most cases, the IRS doesn’t require you to keep records in any special manner. IRS Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, has details on a wide range of tax-saving opportunities and tax changes for 2013 for individual taxpayers. Taxpayers can get a jump on preparing their 2013 federal income tax returns by consulting the newly revised tax guide now

available on IRS.gov. Small business owners are advised to keep records documenting gross receipts, expenses and assets. This includes cash register tapes, deposit slips, receipt books, invoices, credit card charges and sales slips, canceled checks, account statements and real estate closing statements. IRS Publication 583, Starting a Business and Keeping Records is a good source of information and is available at IRS.gov or by calling 800-829-3676.

Safe and cost efficient ways to winterize your home

Each winter, consumers are looking for ways to save money on home heating. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) suggests ways for homeowners to safely winterize their homes and save money in the process. “High heating costs are a problem each winter when money is tight,” says Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and northern Illinois. “Winterizing a home is economical because a small up-front investment is worthwhile for months. It increases the energy efficiency of a house and lowers overall heating costs.” According to the Energy Information Administration, more than 90% of the 116 million homes in the United States are expected to have higher heating costs than the previous winter. Homes heated primarily with propane are expected to spend an average of 9% more than last winter, and homes heated with electric heat are expected to spend 2% more. Fortunately, homeowners can reduce some of the costs by winterizing their home. The BBB offers the following tips for winterizing homes: Caulking and Weather Stripping- To prevent air leaks, homeowners should inspect the caulking around windows and doors to check for cracking and peeling. In addition, ensure that doors and windows are shut tightly and no cold air is coming in due to worn down weather stripping. Ceiling fans-By reversing the direction of your ceiling fan so the blades turn clockwise, you push warm air down and force it around the room. Furnace-Furnaces older than 15 years might be due a replacement. For newer furnaces, make sure the for filter is clean and the thermostat is working properly. Heating ducts. Ducts should be cleaned once every two years. Homeowners should also consider adding insulation to any exposed ductwork in order to prevent losing heated air. Emergency kit. When a winter storm strikes, an emergency kit should have all essential materials in one handy place. An emergency kit should include flashlights, candles and matches, a first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable food and a battery-powered radio. Create the same emergency kit for the car as well, including a couple blankets. Smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectorsTest smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and install fresh batteries. Homeowners should consider replacing smoke alarms older than 10 years. Gutters and ridge vents-Gutters should be cleaned to prevent any clogs that would cause rainwater to back up and freeze, making the gutters expand and crack. The ridge vents need to be cleaned as well in order to help prevent stagnate air. Windows-Window screens should be taken down and replaced with storm windows; they provide an extra layer of protection and keep the house warmer. Investing in a window insulator kit is an inexpensive option to keep out drafts. For more advice you can trust and free referrals on home maintenance, visit BBB at www.bbb.org.

Rep. Lipinski fights for American workers

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) issued the following statement recently regarding his opposition to H.R. 3830, the Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014, legislation that was introduced last week to grant the President trade promotion authority (TPA) – also known as “fast track” authority – on international trade agreements currently being negotiated. The bill would allow the Administration to negotiate trade agreements with foreign nations and then “fast track” legislation implementing these agreements through Congress in a short time period with limited debate and no amendments allowed. “Recently legislation has been introduced by some members of Congress that would allow new international trade agreements currently being negotiated by the Obama Administration – such as the Trans Pacific Partnership – to be “fast tracked” through Congress. This would be a terrible mistake. Too often

in recent years Congress has failed the American people by abdicating its responsibilities and relinquishing too much power to the executive branch. This has been especially harmful when it comes to trade agreements. “Over the last few decades we have seen American presidents – both Democrats and Republicans – negotiate trade agreements that they promised would help American workers. But these promises of more and better jobs have not only gone unfulfilled, once the negotiated trade pacts were implemented we have seen larger trade deficits and a declining standard of living for middle-class Americans. In our increasingly connected world, greater foreign trade is necessary to grow the American economy and create

more jobs. To this end, international agreements that break down barriers to trade and open markets to fair competition can be good. “Congress has a responsibility to the American people to be fully informed about trade agreements the Administration is negotiating, to take time to carefully study concluded agreements and to make necessary changes to the implementing legislation the Administration sends to Congress. Only then can we be certain that the interests of American workers are being served and not just American business interests. The legislation currently being proposed to grant trade promotion authority would undermine those responsibilities. For these reasons, I cannot support it.”

Gun Report by Artie Cultew

My New Toy After a much-needed (at least that’s what we’re told to believe) three-day cooling-off period, I was finally cooled-off enough to be able to pick up my new birthday present last week. As with any new toy, I was eager to try it out but by the time the store had made sure that they dotted all the “i”s and crossed all the “t”s on the required paperwork it was getting very close to closing time, so I resigned myself to having to wait a bit longer. That was the Monday before last, so even though the seventy-two hour figurative coolingoff period was over, a very literal cooling-off (or should I say “freezi n g - y o u r- b u t t - o ff ” ? ) period was now only just beginning. Long story short, for the next few days it was just too darned cold to go to the shooting range. For those of you who might not know, indoor shooting ranges need to be adequately and appropriately ventilated, and even though they’re heated, a lot of that heat

just gets sucked out by the exhaust fans. On days when the outside temperatures are in the single digits or lower, you probably won’t see too many customers at the range except for the real diehards. Last time I checked, I’m not a diehard. Maybe someday but not yet. Most of the time I’d just rather be comfortable. By that Thursday, the temperature made it up into the lower teens, so I figured I’d better take advantage of the relative heat wave while I can. So I packed up my case and headed out to the range. As usual, I had a heck of a great time! I got to play with my new toy to my heart’s content and managed to fire a few hundred rounds of ammo while familiarizing myself with it and comparing it to other guns I have. I usually prefer to go to the range with a shooting buddy but when I’m breaking in a new firearm I’d rather go alone so I can really focus and properly accustom myself to it. Once I’ve be-

come totally comfortable with it, I’m more than happy to share the use of that gun with my shooting buddies any time in the future. All in all, it was time and money well spent and I’m looking forward to doing it* again sometime soon. (*Does “it” mean buying another gun — or going to the range? Why not both? YOLO) Gun Fact The annual “Shot Show” is happening this week (January 14-17). It is the world’s largest “shooting, hunting and outdoor trade show and conference for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting accessories industry” and it’s taking place in Las Vegas. With more than 1,600 exhibitors covering 630,000 square feet, an estimated 62,000 industry professionals will be in attendance. It’s not open to the general public but you can check it out at www. shotshow.org. (By the way, I’d love to get a little email feedback from our readers.) artie@citynewshound.com
