Congressman Lipinski announces All-American Boy and Girl winners

Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL3) held his annual AllAmerican Boy and Girl Award Ceremony for 7th and 8th grade students at the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills. One hundred finalists were selected from over one thousand applicants to appear before a panel of judges for a formal interview. Following the interviews, 12 winners were selected, three boys and three girls from each grade. “There’s a lot of attention these days on a few young people that make bad decisions,” Rep. Lipinski said. “I look forward to this long standing program every year because it gives me the

opportunity to highlight a group of well-rounded young men and women that the entire district can be proud of. Looking at these individuals – and the strong network of family, friends, and teachers that surrounds them – I know they will make great contributions to their communities and our country.” Lipinski congratulated all the finalists and urged them to continue working hard and focus on ways they can be of service to others. The winners are: Seventh grade boys: Austin Monaco, Santa Lucia; Christopher Neary, St. Cajetan; Sabastian Alander Sawicki,

Greetings and salutations, fine readers of mine! Toots Malone reporting misadventures, calamities and so forth. Is everyone in the world sick? It seems like it lately. If Toots sees the inside of one more emergency room or one more doctor’s office, all bets are off! She shall go stark raving insane and they will carry her away. Alas, no more of this silly drivel, on to the show!! Sorry folks for always boring you with my misfortunes, but I promise I will get exciting soon. And when Toots does,

watch out!! But me figures if Toots tells you of all her problems and she is still surviving, hopefully that makes you look at yours and realize that they are not as bad or insurmountable as they appear. Alright, enough with the stinkin’ lectures and “moral of the story” this week. You know how Toots has to please Madame Editor with this “moral of the story” every week. My readers want to hear about excitement, intrigue, adventure and fun. And Toots shall accommodate them. Yep! Anyhow... Doctors and

So Toots was on a long excursion of transporting these fine folks back and forth to doctors and such. Oh Toots, you’re such a mother hen. And in between, Toots is busy playing chauffeur for all the spawn of these sicklings. Okay Madame Editor - I agree, maybe they don’t need to know all that. On with the story. One more thing before I go onward. Many readers call and inquire if this is a made-up column or does all this stuff really happen to Toots. Yes, it actually happens to me. track and field team then we will have a great season,” said Ashley. Ashley’s goals are to establish a good team culture, one where the team performs better together. She wants to raise the bar on what is expected and the commitment put into each sport. The advantage to Ashley being both a counselor and coach is that she gets to know the students. She is around them on a regular basis and knows what is going on with each student in both the academic world and the sports world. It also gives the students a chance to get to know a different side of the “counselor.” Ashley’s high expectations and accountability stem from a background in running. Ashley ran cross country and track at Butler University for 4 years. In the last 3 years she has run 5 marathons including 2 Boston Marathon appearances, as well as many half marathons. She coached the Track & Field distance squad at George Westinghouse College Prep in 2012 and has worked as a summer running coach for Charlie Kern’s “Championship Training Academy” in Elmhurst, since 2010. You earned yourself a ticket But I’ve found a way Call your friends and family This is what you say. If you call and I don’t answer That means I’m driving So just leave me a message Then I’ll keep surviving. Sister Maria Sandoval

Personal Stats: I am a novice with the Sisters of Saint Casimir. This is the second year of a three-year formation period prior to professing vows as a Sister. What Do You Do For A Living? As a novice I am in formation with my congregation. This is a period of greater discernment as to vocation. It is also a time of personal growth; of deepening spiritually as well as a time to learn more about religious life, my specific community and the Church. How Or Why, Did You Choose Religious Life? Since childhood I have felt called to religious life. I think at one time or another many little girls, who have been educated by a Sister, want to become Sisters. Throughout my life, in all that I have done, there remained that gentle pull, that invitation to love and to serve as a vowed religious. The Best Advice That You Ever Received? In the words of Mother Maria Kaupas - “Always more, always better, always with love.” Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? First, have a meaningful relationship with God and know how very loved you are. Second, know that you are here for a reason. Every one of us has our own special mission that no one else can do for us. Anything Else To Add? Part of Women’s History Month (March 8-14), has been designated as the first National Catholic Sisters Week. Catholic Sisters have made valuable contributions in the fields of education, healthcare, social justice, catechesis, environmental awareness, etc., in general responding to the needs of the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized. I invite the readers to remember all Sisters in their prayers and to continue to pray for vocations. Since 1911 the Sisters of Saint Casimir have ministered in the Chicago area. The community was founded in 1907 by Venerable Mother Maria Kaupas. She was an immigrant from Lithuania who first saw religious sisters at the age of 17 when she came to the United States at the invitation of her brother, Father Anthony Kaupas. The Sisters today continue her faithfilled vision wherever they are. To learn more about Mother Maria and the Sisters of Saint Casimir, visit www.ssc2601.com or contact us at 773-776-1324 and request our newsletter. Our Motherhouse is located at 2601 W. Marquette Road. Everyone is also invited to our monthly Mass praying for the beatification of Mother Maria Kaupas. The next Mass is April 5th at 9:30 a.m. I’d love to see you there.

Everyone is invited to join New Life Community Church for their new Garfield Ridge Grand Opening location on Sunday, April 6th at 11:30 a.m. at Kennedy High School, 5601 S. Narragansett. Casual dress, contemporary music, clean and secure nursery, great children’s classes (infants-Jr. High). There is plenty of off street parking. New Life Community Church is a Christian Church for the community. It’s a great place to make new friends. Join them at the grand opening and discover your place! For information please call 773-649-4366 or visit www.newlifechicago.org Pictured: Juan and Rosa Sanchez who will be the service leaders.

St. Laurence Scholastic Bowl takes third place

Mother Nature Killed My Guitar & Beatle Stalkers I don’t like Winter. I tolerate it, cope with it, and start praying for Spring the day after Christmas. The one good thing about Winter, in my mind, is that it usually affords me some extra time to practice and play guitar at home. No yard work, and after the holidays the social engagements dwindle. Yes! More time for my favorite activity. But not this year! Snow storm after snow storm after snow storm! I have no idea how many hours I’ve spent clearing snow. And then crawling back into the house exhausted. Add to that the hours spent in traffic crawling at a snail’s pace because of the weather. And if that wasn’t bad enough, all the days of sub-freezing temperatures that just zap every last ounce of energy you have left try-

ing to keep warm. Mother Nature didn’t kill my guitar, but she sure killed my practice routine this winter. I’m praying for that blessed period between the last snow and the beginning of yard work. We’re 10 inches shy of the all-time snow record folks. Shall we go for it? No! If I see one more snow flake I’ll commit hari kari. On a totally unrelated note, Omega Auctions of Liverpool, England will be auctioning 200 Beatle items on March 20th. Items to be auctioned include the 1907 Bechstein Concert Grand piano that John Lennon and Paul McCartney used to compose the song, “Help!” It is expected to fetch at least $83,000. Also available are the jackets the Beatles wore on the “Help!” album cover.

They are expected to go for between $82,000 and $115,000 each. I find it odd that a rare piano over 100 years old would go for less than a jacket. I guess you can’t wear a piano, and any one can wear a jacket. I wonder if my friend Bill will be there. He has an entire room devoted to the Beatles. He’s seen Paul McCartney so many times that he’s just this side of a stalker. Bill may need some Help! Questions/Comments: www.KenQualter.com

Tips for selecting tax preparation help

Anticipated tax refunds can cause consumers to rush to get their taxes filed as soon as possible. However, being careless about selecting tax preparation help could delay an expected refund, and also may open up consumers to fraud and identity theft. The BBB encourages taxpayers to use caution when selecting an outside tax preparer. “Many consumers seek some form of assistance in filing their returns,” said Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Not thoroughly researching the tax preparer can cause problems ranging from minor inconveniences to major troubles. Fines, additional fees and a great deal of hassle can be the outcome.” Consumers should be aware that some tax preparation businesses are open for only a few months every year. It may be hard to track down the preparer if there are problems after a tax service

office closes. The Internal Revenue Service also has issued warnings about online tax-related schemes that can steal taxpayer’s identities. For example, scam emails may state there is an issue with a refund, that the taxpayer is being audited, or that there’s a delay in processing the tax return. Links in the emails usually go to a scammer’s website, which will then ask for Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card information. Here are some tips for selecting a tax preparer: Ask around. Get referrals from friends and family about who they use, and check the BBB Reliability Reports on tax preparation services at www.bbb.org Look for credentials. Ideally, your tax preparer should be a certified public accountant, a tax attorney or an enrolled agent. All three can represent you before the IRS in matters, including an audit. Don’t fall for promises. Be wary of any tax preparation service that

promises larger refunds than the competition, and avoid any tax preparers who base their fee on a percentage of the refund. Think about accessibility. Many tax preparation services only set up shop for the months leading up to April 15. In case the IRS finds errors, or in case of an audit, you might need to be able to contact your tax preparer throughout the year. Read contract carefully. Read tax preparation service contracts closely to ensure you understand issues such as how much it is going to cost for the service, how the cost will be affected if preparation is more complicated and time consuming than expected, and whether the tax preparer will represent you in case of an audit. Check your return. Before you sign the return, read it over to check for mistakes. Ask the preparer to explain anything you don’t understand and don’t forget to sign it. For more advice on finding professionals you can trust, visit www.bbb.org

Registration for the coming school year is now open at Peckwas Preparatory Academy. The Academy offers a private school alternative for parents seeking a challenging, innovative, warm and nurturing elementary school education for their children. The Academy offers preschool through 8th grade, with most graduates continuing on to the area’s most selective private and public high schools. Average class size at The Academy is 16-20 students, and a slightly longer school day, coupled with an innovative curriculum, helps Academy students achieve high levels of success. At Peckwas Prep, preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students benefit from an active early childhood program taught by an experienced early childhood staff. Elementary students receive instruction in reading comprehension and fluency, mathematics, grammar and language arts, writing skills, science, health and social studies. In addition to a rigorous academic program, Academy students are also encouraged to participate in community philanthropies, and each class does an annual project to raise money for a variety of charity causes. Several Academy students are also athletes involved in a variety of community and club sports, and enjoy participating in special spirit week events, tournaments and more at school. Some of the great traditions enjoyed at the Academy include a holiday and year end show each year that all students participate in, student travel to locations such as Disney World and Washington, DC, Fall and Spring Spirit Weeks, and the big End of the Year Fest which closes out each school year. To find out more about Peckwas Prep, or to register for the coming year, contact us at 708-594-6857. Interested families are also strongly encouraged attend an upcoming Open House event. Alderman Burke marks 45 years of service to the 14th ward

The Honorable Edward M. Burke officially celebrated forty-five years in office as Alderman of the 14th Ward on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. The City Club of Chicago marked the anniversary by bestowing the Excellence in Public Service Award on Burke recognizing his four-and-a-half decades of outstanding public service. Alderman Burke began his career in 1965 as a Chicago police officer and entered politics following in the footsteps of his father, Joseph P. Burke. He became Democratic Committeeman of the 14th Ward in 1968 and Alderman in 1969. As the influential and longtime Chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Finance, Alderman Burke holds the City’s purse strings and is responsible for all legislative matters pertaining to its finances, including municipal bonds, taxes and revenue matters. Alderman Burke called his tenure in public office a “remarkable journey” and thanked his many supporters for their loyalty over the decades. He has served under eight mayors and has enjoyed the longest tenure as Alderman in the history of the Chicago City Council. At City Hall, Alderman Burke has carved out a long and impressive history as a legislative leader. He

has championed anti-smoking measures, mandatory carbon monoxide detectors, secured increased death benefits for the families of first-responders killed in the line of duty, established the City’s first-ever gun offender registry, banned texting while driving, and outlawed the use of the controversial chemical BPA in children’s products. Throughout his career in elected office, Alderman Burke has sought, above all else, to deliver the highest-quality city services to the residents of the 14th Ward. “It is this one-on-one, face-to-face contact that has always brought me the most enduring satisfaction. Being able to make a real and immediate difference in the lives of my constituents is what counts. I believe that serving the people of the 14th Ward will stand alone as my ultimate political achievement and legacy,” Burke said. “I have taken great satisfaction in being able to make a difference on a local level and see the immediate impact it has made on the lives of neighborhood residents. I have worked diligently to effectively use ‘ward menu’ funds to improve the ward’s infrastructure. We have repaved streets, installed new sidewalks, built state-of-the-art schools and created other basic improvements to breathe new life into our community.” The Dean of the Chicago City Council, Alderman Burke also serves as its unofficial historian and parliamentarian. Throughout his career, he has been an avid student of Chicago history and is the co-author of three books: Inside the Wigwam: Chicago Presidential Conventions, 1860-1996; End of Watch: Chicago Police Killed in the Line of Duty, 1853-2006; and Glory & Government, Chicago’s City Hall at 100. Alderman Burke and his wife, Anne, a Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, are the parents of five children, and reside in the Archer Heights community.

When elected, I WILL sit down with officials and my team to figure out practical solutions on how to control the bleeding costs of the jail and properly outfit and train our personnel. SAFETY With waiting lines to get into the courtroom and consistent reports of jurors being harassed inside the courts, we need to increase the training and staffing of security personnel. EVICTIONS The success rate on serving eviction notices is very low -- 33%. I plan to find ways to streamline this process by reviewing practical options to get the job done. When elected, I promise to work hard to advance more training for our staff, add more security personnel and streamlining some of our workload for optimum effectiveness. Punch 96 on the ballot

Artie Cultew by Artieby Cultew An event took place in Springfield last Wednesday (March 5) that was largely ignored by most mainstream media outlets despite its relatively large turnout of more than two thousand people (probably closer to 2,500) who juggled their schedules and braved the inclement weather to attend. It was also coincidentally Ash Wednesday, which more than likely prevented an even bigger turnout. The event was the eighth annual IGOLD (Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day) where gun owners and advocates from all over the state gathered to lobby their representatives in both the Illinois House and Senate. Co-sponsored by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) and Illinois Carry, who partnered with other organizations such as Guns Save Life, Sangamon County Ri fle Association and the McHenry County Right To Carry Association, the

IGOLD

event started out at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, located just a few blocks from the State Capitol Building. People arrived from all corners of the state by cars, trains and busses. Many of them had begun their day many hours earlier than usual, as they had to allow ample time for their commute to Springfield as well as a little extra time to allow for the extreme weather conditions. The kickoff was a legislative briefing by ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson and NRA (National Rifle Association) Contract Lobbyist Todd Vandermyde. Representatives from Illinois Carry and Guns Save Life provided pertinent information as well. Three of the four Republican primary gubernatorial candidates (Brady, Dillard and Rutherford) were present and spoke, affirming their support of the right of law-abiding

citizens to possess and use firearms of their choice. The attendees then marched over and gathered at the Capitol Building’s Lincoln Steps after which they entered the building and respectfully made their presence known to their respective legislators. The main gist of the lobbying was to let legislators know that they (IGOLD) will not accept any toughening of the recent concealed carry law or any legislative proposals to ban, tax or register firearms. An interesting aspect of gun legislation is that it blurs conventional political partisan lines, as there are hardcore, tow-the-party-line lifelong Democrat voters who are every bit as pro-gun as I am, as well as staunch conservative Republican voters who don’t seem to mind a little gun control in their lives. The legislators who want to get re-elected (namely, all of them) sometimes need to bend a little when it comes to enacting gun legislation. An IGOLD “Rally at the Rotunda” followed,

after which the crowds dispersed and everybody headed for home. All in all, it was a fun and successful endeavor and plans have already begun for next year’s IGOLD. Footnote: The always vocal anti-gun groups that had boasted of having their own counter-rally that same day apparently had barks much bigger than their bites as they were for the most part conspicuously absent. Maybe after looking out their windows that morning, they decided to hit their snooze buttons and grab a few more winks under the covers instead or trekking their way to Springfield. No matter. This wasn’t their event anyway. Re: Last Week’s Column Sincere apology given if any police officers (or others) took offense to the content. In no way was this meant to show disrespect for our fine law enforcement officials. We salute your bravery for putting your lives on the line every day for us and appreciate your dedication and your service. Thank you!
