Additional Learning Support

Student Success Mentors

If you are a student who needs extra help with your studies we will help you to identify your needs. We provide support so that you are not disadvantaged.

Sometimes things in your personal life can get in the way of you being able to study effectively at college. The Student Success Mentor team can offer you individual help. This might be about attendance at college, relationships, organisation skills, health and well-being or issues with housing and money.

This might include: • working with a Teaching Support Assistant (TSA) in class; • receiving one-to-one classes for dyslexia; • working in small groups to support you in writing your assignment; or

Counselling

Disability Support

Our Counselling Team provide a safe and confidential service for you to explore personal and emotional issues if things become difficult to handle. Our counsellors are very experienced and will work with you to find ways to move forward in your life.

At City College we actively encourage and support students with disabilities or learning difficulties.

Safeguarding

• using our drop in services for one off sessions.

Please come and talk to us as soon as possible about your support needs. We can work out adjustments to help you study and achieve on your course. These might include: • use of specialist software and equipment; • in-class support from a TSA or a note-taker; or • one-to-one support with study skills, or help with English and mathematics. We identify students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in a number of ways. Having information about your needs as early as possible allows us to plan for support and make any reasonable adjustments. We give all students a range of tasks to find out their English and mathematics levels. We use this information to find out if they may need additional learning support. Students do not need an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP) or other evidence of disability to use our support services. We are able to carry out assessments for dyslexia and for exam arrangements too. We like young people and their parents/carers to give us as much information as possible about support needs. We value on-going contact to make sure the support given is what is needed.

At City College we have the strongest commitment to making sure our students experience a secure, safe and welcoming environment. Through our safeguarding work we help each individual student fulfil their potential by having robust policies and procedures in place to safeguard young people and vulnerable adults. These include anti-bullying, e-safety and health and safety. We have clear ways to recognise and refer any issues of concern and we take all reasonable steps to minimise risk. We are also committed to developing our student’s ability to keep themselves safe. We do this by raising their awareness and assisting them to make informed decisions relating to current day issues.

Equality and Diversity At City College we welcome and celebrate the diversity of our student population. We value and recognise differences in race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion or belief and age. We actively oppose discrimination and work continuously to improve access to our courses. Our aim is to provide a learning environment that is inclusive, and we are committed to removing conditions that put anyone at a disadvantage. We have set out our response to statutory obligations in a range of equality and diversity policy documents which are available on our website.

We have a strong ethos of inclusivity and a desire for all young people to meet their potential. We monitor student progress and work closely with teaching staff to make sure that support and reasonable adjustments are made.

Study Programmes At City College, we provide more than just your chosen qualification. All students are enrolled on a specialised Study Programme which is tailored to your educational needs. This includes:

your Study Programme

{

Main Qualification

Work Experience

English and Mathematics

Enrichment

Employability skills

Progression Support

Main qualification Your Study Programme includes the main qualification you are studying towards in your chosen subject, eg. City & Guilds or BTEC Level 2 or Level 3 Certificates and Diplomas.

Mathematics and English Achieving a good standard of mathematics and English skills - at least a grade C or above in both subjects at GCSE - is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. These qualifications can also mean higher earnings in the future! City College is dedicated to ensuring students aged 16-18, who have not yet achieved a minimum of grade C in GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics achieve these qualifications. • What does this mean for me? If you don’t have a grade C in either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE English - You will be enrolled on these qualifications as part of your Study Programme to work towards a grade C in both subjects. If you have a GCSE grade lower than a D, this is more likely to be a Functional Skills qualification. If you have a GCSE grade C in one subject but not the other - You will be enrolled on a qualification as part of your Study Programme to work towards your GCSE grade C in the subject that you have yet to achieve a C grade in. This will either be Functional Skills or a GCSE retake programme and you will discuss this with a subject expert.

@citycoll

If you already have grade C in both GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English - You will not be enrolled on any mathematics or English qualifications but you will continue to develop and apply your skills throughout the rest of your study programme. You will have the opportunity to improve your GCSE grades in mathematics and English if you wish.

Employability Your Study Programme will help prepare you for the world of work or higher-level study. There will be many opportunities for you to learn and develop your employability skills and you will keep a record of how and when you demonstrate these skills. This could be as part of your course or work experience or by taking part in a range of employmentfocused activities. Employers have identified seven key employability skills which they look for when recruiting. These are: • self-management; • team-working; • business and customer service awareness; • problem-solving; • communication and literacy; • application of numeracy; and • application of IT. At City College, we want you to have the edge when applying for jobs, therefore we provide you with opportunities to learn and develop these skills. You will also have the opportunity to work with our Entrepreneur-in-Residence to develop business ideas of your own.

Enrichment: get involved!

Work experience

To help make sure you get the most out of your time at City College and prepare you for future employment or study, there are a range of College activities and initiatives to get involved in. At City College these activities are known as ‘enrichment’ and they provide excellent opportunities to make new friends, help other students and boost your CV.

Work experience is vital in helping you to progress, and through working in partnership with local employers, we will help you to become ‘work-ready’ through work experience placements, industry visits, job shadowing and real-life work projects.

• Student Voice Represent your fellow students’ views on College and course matters at Student Council meetings. There are also opportunities for you to meet with the Principal on a monthly basis, as well as attend College Governor meetings; by doing this you will be influencing College decisions at the highest level. • Citizenship Are you interested in fund-raising or supporting your local community? We will help you to find and participate in local, national or international projects. • Entrepreneurship Are you a budding entrepreneur? We will support you to find and develop your ideas, seek investment, and will help you gain sales experience. You will have access to a wealth of advice from experienced professionals including our Entrepreneur-in-Residence - a successful local business person who is in College at least once a week to support our students. • Sports Our students successfully compete in football, netball and hockey. We also offer many other sports and fitness activities, such as badminton, Zumba and yoga. • Trips and activities You can also get involved in a range of fun activities, such as paintballing, Lazer Quest and trips to theme parks, theatres and shows.

16

Progression support • UCAS support If you are thinking about going to university, we’ll make sure you have the information you need to choose the right place to study, apply successfully and be prepared for interviews. We will also provide you with information and advice about higher education funding applications. • Employment support We want to make sure you have the best chances of finding your dream job when you leave us. We will help you create a first class CV, research the careers you are interested in, apply for jobs and prepare for interviews. Our great links with local employers will ensure we provide you with the latest advice about the skills they are looking for and what jobs are available.

It’s real hands-on experience here, learning skills in a working environment. Having the chance to oversee some tasks has helped me develop my managerial skills, too. It’s given me the ability to manage my own time wisely to reach targets and deadlines. It’s all good preparation for what I want to do next: Set up my own business.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships provide the ideal opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’ and gain vocational experience while making yourself more employable. Employers also value Apprenticeships because they enable employers to be a part of your development and familiarise you with their work culture. You may already be employed but want to gain a qualification to show you have the relevant skills in your job role or you may wish to progress within the company. An Apprenticeship qualification will demonstrate to your managers that you are ready for career progression. City College is a major provider of Apprenticeships in the South East and we have extensive contacts across key industries. We work closely with employers and advertise their vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Vacancy Service.

Why take an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of learning on the job. While taking an Apprenticeship you will be working for a professional company in a real job. You will gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed to succeed in your chosen industry. You will also work towards either an NVQ/Diploma or another nationally recognised qualification.

Flexible training For the majority of Apprenticeships, you will be in active employment for most of your time, with training taking place on the job, and one-to-one visits from one of our Assessors. Alternatively, some Apprenticeships work on a day-release basis, with apprentices attending College once a week. There are many different Apprenticeships you can take - not just the traditional routes that you might imagine. An Apprenticeship is a valued and recognised qualification for many industries.

Apprenticeships include:

Accountancy

Business Administration

Carpentry & Joinery

Child Care

Customer Service

Electrical Hairdressing

Adult Health & Social Care

Hospitality Computing

Maintenance Operations

Apprenticeship FAQS What different levels of Apprenticeship are available?

Can City College help find an employer?

There are three different levels of Apprenticeship available:

Our team may be able to help you with finding an Apprenticeship. If you register your interest with our in-house Recruitment Consultant, we can notify you if any suitable vacancies arise, or offer advice on how you can improve your chance of gaining an employer. If, once employed for a period of time, issues arise that make the Apprenticeship unsuitable for you, our team will work with you to find an alternative employer.

• Intermediate - Level 2 (equivalent to 5 good GCSE passes) - grade C Apprentices work towards a work-based learning qualification such as an NVQ/Diploma Level 2, Functional Skills and in some areas a relevant technical certificate diploma. These provide the skills you need for your chosen career and allow entry to Advanced Apprenticeships. • Advanced Apprenticeships - Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A-level passes) Advanced Apprentices work towards a work-based learning qualification such as a NVQ/Diploma Level 3, Functional Skills and technical diploma. To start this programme, you should ideally have 5 GCSEs (grade A-C) or have completed an Apprenticeship at Level 2 and have been assessed to progress to Level 3. • Higher Apprenticeships For those who have completed a Level 3 qualification, Higher Apprenticeships are a nationally accredited work-based programme designed to meet employers needs at a higher skill level and include qualifications at a level equivalent to Higher Education (Level 4 and 5)

How do I apply? City College advertises vacancies and an Apprenticeship matching service is available via this link: www.ccb.ac.uk/apprenticeships If further support is required, please contact our Apprenticeship Team on 01273 667 770 or email apprenticeship@ccb.ac.uk

22

What happens after I apply? Applicants already in employment will be interviewed with the employer at the employer’s premises. Applicants without employers will be interviewed and assessed for suitability at the College. We will then endeavour to find a suitable employer who will subsequently wish to conduct an interview.

How and where does the training take place? Several Apprenticeship Frameworks are available for delivery entirely in the workplace. This means the apprentice does not need to attend college, and the qualification is assessed directly in their workplace, unless the apprentice is required to attend Functional Skills workshops as part of their programme. Other Apprenticeship frameworks, mainly those requiring a higher and more intense level of taught skills such as construction, hairdressing, AAT or professional cookery, are delivered in the form of day release. If you are on day release, this will mean one day per week spent at City College during term time. You will be paid by your employer during any day-release days.

When can a training programme be started? At any time during the year with the exception of Construction, AAT Accounting and Professional Cookery. These qualifications usually start at the beginning of each academic year in September.

How long does an Apprenticeship take to complete? An Apprenticeship can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentice’s ability and the industry sector. As a guide, an Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship usually takes around 12 to 18 months and an Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship around 18 to 24 months.

How much will I earn? Wages will vary depending on the type of Apprenticeship you are taking but there is an Apprenticeship national minimum wage (NMW) in the UK which applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. From October 2015, this is £3.30 per hour.

How safe will I be in the workplace? All workplaces are assessed for health and safety before any Apprenticeship is delivered there by City College. There is also a robust Safeguarding policy at City College to ensure that all students are, and feel, safe and protected.

What might my working hours be? Apprentices are required to have a minimum of 30 hours in the workplace but normal office hours usually apply.

Pre-Apprenticeship training at City College Not ready for an Apprenticeship but looking for real workplace experience? The Pre-Apprenticeship programme offers high quality work experience placements, structured with local employers to: • prepare you for your chosen industry; • demonstrate you are work-ready; • provide you with a current employer reference; and • increase your chances of getting a job or into an Apprenticeship programme. The programme includes work placement, Level 1 Enhancing Employability qualification, English and mathematics training and regular job search support. Courses start throughout the year. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION If you want to prepare yourself for degree-level education in a supportive environment, an access course is the ideal route. The courses last one year and involve approximately three days a week at college. To enrol on an access course you’ll need to be 19 or over, motivated, enthusiastic, able to manage your time effectively and ready to study. You will be part of a group of adult students who are excited about learning and willing to work hard with other members of the group.

Subjects available • Pre-Access (Diploma for Progression) • Biomedical Sciences • Business & Enterprise • Business & Management • Computing • Education Studies

Our access courses provide core-skills training as well as the opportunity to specialise in one of a range of subject areas. This combination makes our access courses the perfect preparation for study at university.

• Environmental Sciences

All your classes will be highly engaging, and will enable you to learn and be assessed through a range of methods, including: presentations, essays, reports, case studies, short answer tasks and, for some courses, practical work.

You will need to show a good level of motivation, be fully committed to the course and be able to spend a minimum of eight hours per week studying at home. You will also need to submit a personal statement in support of your application and evidence of your English and mathematics qualifications.

Our data shows that within one year of completing the programme, 90% of students are engaged in education, employment, training or volunteering. 100% of students report increased levels of confidence and motivation by the end of the programme.
