FINANCIAL SUPPORT GOVERNMENT FUNDED COURSES

FULL PAYMENT DISCOUNT

If you are interested in studying a Government funded course but feel you would have difficulty meeting the costs, you may be eligible to apply for financial support from the College. Successful applicants may receive help with the cost of fees, equipment and childcare. You do not have to be on benefits to receive financial support. Many successful applicants are working but have a low household income.

The College operates a 5% tuition fee discount on full-time and part-time Further Education courses of longer than 10 weeks duration if the learner pays in full at the time of enrolment (to encourage full payment).

Guidelines and application forms are available online in the Financial Assistance section of www.ccb.ac.uk or from the Student Centres at Pelham Street and City College East Campus. We have tried to make the application process as simple as possible but please be aware you will need to provide us with information and evidence regarding your financial situation in order to demonstrate your eligibility. The funds we have are limited and are offered at the discretion of the College on a first come, first served basis. The deadline for applying for courses starting this September is 4pm on 26th August 2016. Please note that not all courses are eligible for support. If you are planning to study a full cost course you cannot apply for financial support.

10

Please note that this is for Further Education level programmes (excluding students aged 19+ who wish to study and already hold a Level 3 qualification and students aged 24 and over studying at Level 3 and above whether funded by a student loan or otherwise) and Home/ EU students only paying their own fees. Full cost course, Higher Education and International student fees are not subject to any early settlement discount.

PART PAYMENT AGREEMENTS If a course is more than ÂŁ200 and 10 weeks in duration you can set up an instalment plan of up to three months. This will be for three equal instalments, the first payable on enrolment. Instalment plans are not available for companies that are sponsoring learners. If you withdraw, before all instalments have been received, we will still require all future instalments to be paid and will seek to recover any outstanding instalments if necessary.

ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS

REFUNDS

Funding for Level 3 or 4 courses is no longer available for students aged between 19 and 23 who already have a full Level 3 qualification, or for any student aged 24 and over studying at Level 3 or higher. This means you will need to pay the full cost of the course. However, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with these costs.

A refund will be given if a course has been cancelled by the College and no suitable alternative can be found. If your course is longer than 12 weeks and you enrol but do not start the course or withdraw within the first 2 weeks of the start date of the course a refund will be given but an administration charge of £30 will be applied. If you withdraw after 2 weeks of commencement of the course you will still be liable for all outstanding fees that are owed to the College. Queries related to refunds can be emailed to our Finance Department at the following e-mail address: finance@ccb.ac.uk.

Any courses applicable to these loans are marked. The Advanced Learner Loan is easy to apply for, doesn’t take your household income into account and doesn’t involve a credit check. For learners who do not already hold a full Level 3 qualification, fee remission is subject to qualification eligibility. If the qualification is not entitlement eligible, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. For more details contact Student Services on 01273 667759 or visit www.ccb.ac.uk.

DRESSMAKING BEGINNERS AND IMPROVERS

PATTERN CUTTING INTRODUCTION

Develop your sewing skills and learn how to make your own clothes using a commercial pattern. Each term you will work towards making a new garment, starting with a skirt or pyjama trousers for complete beginners. To start, you will be introduced to the College sewing machines and shown how to thread up and sew a variety of basic and more decorative seams.

On this dynamic course your specialist tutor will show you how to draft a basic block pattern and how this can be adapted to your own design. You will produce a sample of your garment (toile) and learn how to fit, adjust and create the finished piece. There will be some input on garment construction but the main emphasis will be pattern cutting. It is a fast moving, structured course which does require some additional work at home.

The course will take you through the whole process of making a garment including selecting and cutting the right size of pattern, adapting patterns to fit your shape, cutting out fabrics, sewing darts, pleats and seams, inserting zips, attaching sleeves, collars, cuffs and stitching hems. Sewing machines and overlockers are available to use, although you may find it useful to have your own sewing machine at home to continue your garment and practise techniques away from the class. THE HOMEFRONT IN WARTIME: WORLD WAR I & WORLD WAR II ONE DAY MASTERCLASS

CINEMA 1930S-1950S - “THIS IS WHERE WE CAME IN” ONE DAY MASTERCLASS

The events on the frontline in both World Wars are well documented; however, on this course you will gain a fascinating insight into domestic, working and social life in Britain during the wars. The focus is primarily on changing gender roles, and how when men went to war, women went to work, taking up positions traditionally held by males. These periods are brought to life by slides, books, period texts and film clips, including documentaries.

An era when cinema really reached its heyday, you will discover that early film was educational as well as entertaining, giving ordinary people the chance to view new and exciting events. You will watch film clips, noting cultural aspects and social conditions, which we hope will lead to a lively group discussion.

ART DECO, MODERNISM & THE JAZZ AGE 1918 - 1939 SHORT COURSE

EDWARDIAN: EXTRAVAGANCE & ECONOMY 1900 - 1914 SHORT COURSE

Discover how the so-called Jazz Age was one of frivolity after fear. The very distinctive style which emerged during this period, bright with colour and full of sharp designs, will be illustrated with slides, books and film clips. You will learn how the Modernist style was used to furnish homes in a new and exciting fashion, dominating many aspects of domestic and cultural life.

Learn more about this brief period, before World War One changed many lives irrevocably. You will study how a privileged section of society formed the fashionable set, contrasting vast wealth with the abject poverty that many lived in. You will also study how style, in terms of architecture and furnishings, was changing from the heavy Gothic look to Art Nouveau. The era comes alive by looking at slides, books and film clips.

EXPLORING BRIGHTON’S RICH HISTORY SHORT COURSE

This is an era that is perhaps not as thoroughly examined as the two periods of major global conflict; it was however, a time of rapid social change. You will study for example, how Art Deco and Modernism came to the fore, the spread of literacy to the working class, via the launch of the affordable Penguin paperback, and how advancement in birth control methods aimed to free women from a continual cycle of child-bearing.

To begin you will be guided through the fascinating history of Brighton in two classroom sessions. This is then complemented by three field trips, on which you will visit places of interest in this unique city, learning how Brighton evolved from a small Georgian fishing town to the vibrant seaside resort of today.

Literature and films from this period provide us with unwitting testimony of how people lived, worked and spent their leisure time. You will gain much on this course by looking beneath the surface, and will also investigate how and why filmmakers made changes to aspects of a story as originally featured in the novel. Novels and films of the same title include, ‘Room at the Top’ (1957) by John Braine (film 1959), ‘A Kind of Loving’ (1960) by Stan Barstow (film 1962) and ‘The L-Shaped Room’ (1960) by Lynne Reid Banks (film 1962). ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

GENERAL ESOL COURSES A suitable course whether you are already established in the UK or are currently settling here. You will study grammar and vocabulary through speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as learning about British life and culture. We have classes for beginners through to advanced level. Most courses have a final Edexcel ESOL exam in Speaking and Listening, Reading or Writing.

READ/WRITE COURSES These courses are designed to focus on literacy skills from beginner level for students with no literacy through to intermediate level.

SELT PREPARATION COURSE To gain British Citizenship, you are now required to pass a SELT test. We run a 10 week evening course (3 hours a week) to prepare you for the test. The test can be taken in London (Croydon) or Portsmouth.

The courses and prices listed in the following tables are aimed at people who live permanently in the UK. The ESOL Read/Write course can support you with your literacy and prepare you for the mainstream ESOL courses. If you are interested in joining a course you will need to attend one of our assessment sessions to make sure you are entered at the right level. Please be aware that attending an assessment session does not guarantee you a place on a course. This will depend on the spaces available, your level and the times of the course. Entry requirements: Proof of residence in the UK needed (e.g. bank or utility bill statement) and attendance at a placement testing session. You must be able to attend all classes and complete any homework and assessments. For application enquiries for all ESOL courses, please contact Jo Wheeler on 01273 667788 ext. 537 or email esol@ccb.ac.uk. * The fees are listed opposite but may vary based on circumstance, e.g. if you are claiming JSA you will be eligible for a fee reduction.
