Brighton is a relatively small and compact city which is easy to get across on foot. However, public transport is readily available should you need it, with a frequent, well organised 24-hour bus service, numerous taxi ranks and train links with direct and fast access to London. London by rail is an hour from Brighton and Gatwick Airport only half an hour away.

BRIGHTON STUDENTS’ UNION All higher education students at City College are automatically members of Brighton Students’ Union (Brighton SU). The SU provides a wide range of services and support for over 22,000 students in the Brighton area and provides advice on student welfare, entertainment, activities and local campaigns. A dedicated member of the SU works with students at City College to ensure that you make the most of your time as a student. HOW TO APPLY Applications should be made through UCAS. If you are currently in school or college you will be able to submit an application to UCAS via the online application system, Apply. If you are not at school or college you will be able to apply online through the UCAS website (www.ucas.com). Applications should be submitted to UCAS between 1 September 2016 and 15 January 2017. Applications sent to UCAS after 15 January 2017 will still be considered depending on the availability of places. If you apply after the end of June you will automatically go into Clearing. It is possible to apply for up to five courses (choices) on your UCAS form. The fee for applying through UCAS is currently £24 for multiple choices or £13 for a single choice. If you apply after the end of June the application fee will be £24. Once UCAS has processed your application you will receive a Personal ID number. Along with your username and password you can use this to track the progress of your application via UCAS Track. If you have applied through UCAS and are not holding any offers, or you have changed your mind about the course you have applied for, you may find UCAS Extra useful. This service allows you to apply for courses with vacancies from the end of February until early July. City College’s institutional UCAS code is B76. In some cases we may be able to accept applications directly to the College. This service will not normally be available, however, until after 15 January 2017.

DEFERRED ENTRY We are happy to make deferred offers to students who plan to take a gap year before starting a Degree course. Any conditions of your offer will need to be met by 31 August 2017.

DEFERRED ENTRY

Your formal offer will be sent to you by UCAS and will be displayed on UCAS Track. You should respond to your offer through UCAS, following the instructions they provide. When we make you an offer it will be one of the following:

If your point of entry (or start date) states 2018, then your offer is for deferred entry. This means that you must still satisfy the conditions of your offer by 31 August 2017 and if you are successful in meeting those conditions, or if your offer is unconditional, a place will be reserved for you to start your course in September 2018. You should apply for accommodation and funding during the academic year 2018/2019. If you change your mind and wish to join us in September 2017 instead, then please let us know immediately at he@ccb.ac.uk.

• An unconditional offer, if you have already achieved the necessary conditions or qualifications for your chosen course. • A conditional offer, if you have not yet completed your qualifications and/or you are expected to gain additional experience. Conditional offers will mostly be made in tariff points and grades or just by grades only. • A changed offer, which could be either conditional or unconditional. This means that we have been unable to make you an offer on the course you applied for but that we can on a different course.

ACCEPTING YOUR OFFER

YOUR ADMISSION Your offer of admission to City College Brighton and Hove is based on the information you submitted as part of your UCAS application and any additional information we requested from you. If any of the information you have provided proves to be incorrect we reserve the right to review and possibly withdraw your offer of admission. Once you receive decisions on all your choices UCAS will require you to choose one of your offers as your firm choice, one as your insurance choice, and decline all others. UCAS will set you a deadline in order to make your choice. It is important you keep an eye on this deadline as failure to adhere to it will mean your offers will be automatically declined by UCAS.

MEETING THE CONDITIONS All the conditions set out in your confirmation must be met by 31 August 2017. Our final decision will be sent to UCAS and displayed on UCAS Track.

Using the information on your UCAS application and any additional information you have provided us with, we will classify you as a UK/EU or an international student. This is your tuition fee status and determines the tuition fees you pay and your eligibility for student finance. The fees for 2017/18 are £7750 for a Home/EU student and £9250 for an International student. CITY COLLEGE HARDSHIP FUND

This bursary is for full-time first year undergraduate students who are normally resident in England or the EU and starting their studies in 2017. Students who satisfy the following criteria will be eligible to receive a cash bursary subject to terms and conditions:

If you get into financial difficulty, or find yourself unable to cover costs while completing your course, you may be eligible for financial help from our Hardship Fund. Further information will be available to you from the HE Academic Office whilst you are studying. To be eligible to apply you must be in receipt of full funding from the SFE.

City College is committed to widening participation, ensuring that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can access higher education, get the support they need to succeed in their studies and progress to further study and highly skilled employment.

Household income £25,000-£42,600 £500 cash in two instalments (December and March) Students entering their programme with an Advanced Apprenticeship or a Level 3 National Vocational Qualification £1000 cash in two instalments (December and March) All recipients of this bursary must have been assessed as being eligible to receive full funding from Student Finance England and the awards are subject to good attendance. You will not need to make an application to be considered for this bursary. We use the information you have provided to UCAS and Student Finance England to assess your eligibility. Please make sure that you: Apply for your student loans as soon as possible. Apply for means-tested support and agree to Student Finance England sharing the information you (or your parent/ guardian) provide about household income (we need this information to assess your eligibility and we can only see it if your permission has been given).

To further this, there will be a number of strategies in place to support students with the following backgrounds: • Students coming from areas classified as having low participation rates in higher education • Students in receipt of DSA or who may be academically challenged by periods of ill health • Care leavers.

COUNCIL TAX CERTIFICATES We can provide all full-time students with a Council Tax Certificate which may exempt you from paying local council taxes. Your local council will be able to tell you whether or not you can claim the exemption. Contact Student Finance England if you are not sure whether you have given this permission. EU students should complete an EU Higher Education bursary application form when you apply to Student Finance England. This will be used to assess your household income and eligibility for this bursary. We will generally email you in the autumn term of the year you start your course to confirm whether you will receive this bursary. 11

WHERE TO LIVE Brighton and Hove is a vibrant and multicultural ‘city by the sea’. It boasts a relaxed, cosmopolitan air, buzzing nightlife and thriving culture. City College’s Central Campus on Pelham Street is located right in the heart of Brighton. Eating out, shopping, culture and of course one of the most famous beaches in the country are just a few minutes walk from our central campus. Brighton is considered to be one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the country and with good reason. We have international festivals, major theatres, four cinemas, Championship football and County cricket, a city marathon, beach life and an unrivalled relaxed cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are also areas of tranquillity including city centre parks, the grounds surrounding the Pavilion and the famous beach. Brighton is also a popular university city and, as such, demand for student accommodation is unsurprisingly high. It is therefore vital that you do not leave your accommodation search to the last minute. City College Brighton and Hove does not have halls of residence which means you may be looking to rent in the private sector. This guide aims to point you in the right direction and help you on your way to finding a place that suits your needs.

INDEPENDENT ACCOMMODATION ADVISER City College applicants can access the services of Jackie Phillips, an independent accommodation adviser, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge in finding properties for students in the Brighton area. Jackie charges a one-off admin fee which includes finding suitable accommodation and helping with any problems, should they arise, during your tenancy. Jackie deals with both private landlords and letting agents who keep properties specifically for the educational institutions she supports. She can provide you with information on accommodation in the local area including flat and house shares, bedsits and, occasionally, host family accommodation. She is also well placed to link together people who are looking for shared accommodation. Please bear in mind that Jackie is likely to be very busy towards the start of term so the earlier you can secure her services, the better. If you do not wish to use this service and prefer to be more independent then the following information gives you a good alternative selection of other ways to find your perfect accommodation.

LIVING AT HOME If you are local to the area you may wish to continue living at home. If you choose this option, don’t worry, you won’t be the only one. Around one third of our students studying an undergraduate degree live at home. If you choose this option you’re likely to save money. You can still join in all the campus events and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make new friends and experience student life to the full.

HOUSE SHARES Facebook can be a good way to find people who are starting University at the same time as you. As a starting point, send a request to join the ‘CCB Freshers 2016’ group. You can use this facility to post information about yourself, the type of housing you are looking for and also any rooms that you or others may know of which are available for rent. Also use this group as a way of getting to know your new fellow students. You can also find a number of existing house shares in Brighton where you can potentially join an already established group of people. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT • How many people? The more people sharing a property, the cheaper the bills. However, this could also mean more disagreements, noise and competition for the best rooms! • Friends and relationships. Are your potential housemates in couples? This could affect how people expect to pay bills and share house resources. What if a housemate allows a friend to stay on the sofa - how will this go down? • Cleanliness. If you’re very tidy, how will you get on sharing a property with someone who is completely the opposite? • Bills. Think about how bills will be split, particularly for basics. Eg. Will you have a communal jar for things like cleaning products and toilet rolls?

WHERE TO LIVE (CONTINUED...) LETTING AGENTS There are several agencies in Brighton specialising in student accommodation. Be aware that there is no requirement for letting agents to be registered with a regulatory body. However, registration with professional bodies such as the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) or the National Approved Lettings Scheme (NALS) is something to look out for. A simple search on the internet will provide you with details of all available letting agents.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT When entering into a rental agreement you will be entering into a legally binding agreement, so it’s worth taking your time and carefully considering your options. You may be asked to put down a holding deposit to secure the accommodation - don’t do this until you know for sure what the conditions are for getting your money back should you need to. Don’t sign anything until you are confident all your finances are in place and you can afford any upfront charges as well as your monthly rent and bills. If you are asked to pay a holding deposit then ensure that this is offset against the balance of your damage deposit or deducted from the rent. Ask as many questions are you can think of about the property and the tenancy, eg. If bills are included.

You can get a tenancy agreement checked by an informed person such as an advisor from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Think twice about signing about anything that needs to be done there and then. DETERMINING YOUR BUDGET Don’t underestimate what it’s going to cost you. www.studentcalculator.org is a budgeting calculator and will help you work out what you can afford as well as providing you with case studies. As a guide, the typical annual cost for private accommodation in Brighton during 2015/16 was £5070 - £5893.

The cheapest agent isn’t necessarily the most professional so a good idea is to check online for reviews of their service. Try www.whichpad.com which has reviews from students of the agents they’ve rented through which could be helpful. Bear in mind, however, that if people have a good service they will post a review much less often than if they feel they have had a bad service. Be objective when using reviews as sometimes someone may have had unrealistic expectations that could not be met.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE CODE: C110 DURATION: 2 YEARS This course delves into the fascinating area of living organisms, from the molecular level up, including human biology, immunology, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry. You will be involved in practical lab sessions and in-depth research projects, and will also develop valuable presentation and teamwork skills. BUSINESSS FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE CODE: N102 DURATION: 2 YEARS Whether you are a student fresh from school or college, have some business experience and want to develop your understanding of business theory, or are an entrepreneur wanting to know how to build a successful business, then this course is for you. CREATIVE MUSIC PRODUCTION FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE CODE: W302 DURATION: 2 YEARS This course allows you to explore and develop your personal creative practice in the field of music production. From the outset you will gain practical experience of production techniques, work with professionals from the music industry and develop a deep understanding of the subject area. The type of music recorded or produced can take any form or genre and you will learn to manage the process of developing musical ideas in the studio with musicians. CREATIVE MUSIC PRODUCTION BA (HONS) TOP-UP COURSE CODE: 4R76 DURATION: 1 YEAR This innovative, exciting and stimulating course combines creative academic study with an invaluable insight into the music industry. It enables students who have a Foundation Degree or higher national programme in music to top-up their qualification to an Honours Degree. Our students go on to work as producers, sound artists, audio programmers, studio engineers and performers, or progress to MA programmes in sound art, sonic art or digital media. EVENT & TOURISM MANAGEMENT FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE CODE: 7L88 DURATION: 2 YEARS This course has been designed to give you a thorough grounding in the event and tourism industry, and has a strong vocational emphasis. You will gain essential knowledge of the skills required to run successful event and tourism operations in a challenging but very rewarding sector. Successful completion of this course will prepare you for work within the event and tourism sectors, management roles or progression to related BA programmes.

FOOD & CULINARY ARTS BA (HONS) TOP-UP COURSE CODE: 32X8 DURATION: 1 YEAR This course enables food and culinary arts professionals to advance their careers in the food production, food retail and food service related enterprise sectors. The course is work-based and your existing abilities will be enhanced by applying your newfound knowledge and skills in both classroom and working environments. The course also supports you to become adaptable to the changing demands of commercial, industrial and professional life by encouraging you to develop a wide range of personal and transferable skills such as self-reliance, interpersonal communication and research methods.

The programme is tailored to commercial advertising and editorial work, but also covers many essential photographic and transferable skills. VISUAL ARTS PRACTICE BA (HONS) TOP-UP COURSE CODE: OG93 DURATION: 1 YEAR This innovative honours degree top-up is aimed at graduates from foundation degrees in visual arts and photography. POST-16 TEACHER EDUCATION (PROFGCE AND CERTED) COURSE CODE: QUA005 DURATION: 2 YEARS This two-year nationally accepted qualification, validated by the University of Brighton, is for people who are currently teaching/training in post-16 or who have 50 hours of such teaching/training confirmed for the coming academic year. If you are interested in moving into teaching/training in this sector but have no teaching hours in place, then the Level 3 Award in Education and Training would be appropriate. This is a ‘blended’ course therefore not all sessions are delivered face to face. Course content There are five modules studied over two years focusing on teaching, learning and assessment. A range of super effective teaching methods are covered and modelled which you put into practice in your observed sessions. There is the opportunity for an in depth study of an aspect of your choice in year 2. Assessment Assessments take place at the end of each module. Forms of assessment include practical demonstrations and workshops, assignments in the workplace, research and written projects.
