Welcome to city college Welcome to City College Brighton and Hove’s Advanced Learning course guide for 2013. We think that there are many reasons to come and study at City College we have enthusiastic and experienced lecturers from industry and a wide range of excellent, professional facilities. Brighton is one of the most creative, funky, fun and cultural cities in the country - and City College is located right in the heart of it. All of the courses in this brochure are aimed at adults. Anyone over 24 can now take advantage of a government student loan which you won’t have to make any repayments for until you’re earning over £21,000 a year. Financing your course Are 24 or over?
Financing your course
There has been a change in how adult education is being funded in the UK. From 1st August 2013 adult learners above the age of 24 who want to study Advanced and Higher level courses can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan administered by the Student Loans Company to pay for their course fees.
Whether or not you have to pay for your course depends on what category learner you are and this is how it’s broken down:
The loans will be available for application from April 8th 2013 for courses starting from September 2013. These changes mean that the course fees quoted in this brochure are different for 19 to 23 year olds than for 24 + year olds (see ‘Check your category’ below).
Are you 19-23? If you are between the ages of 19-23 at the time your course begins, then you are eligible to have your course fully paid or part paid by the Government depending on your circumstances and previous education history. It’s highly advisable to take advantage of this while you’re still under 24!
If you are aged 19 to 23 years at the time your course begins and you will be studying for your first full Level 3 or 4 course you will not need to pay any fees. If you are aged 19 to 23 as of 31 August 2013, are unemployed AND claiming a state benefit AND completing the course to improve your employability you will not need to pay any fees. If you are aged 19 to 23 as of 31 August 2013 and do not fall within Categories A or B, you will be paying a proportion of the Government funded rate. If you are aged 24 or over at the time your course starts you will need to pay the whole fee yourself or you may be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. Note: If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you progress and complete Higher Education study, you can apply to have the loan used to pay for your Access course repaid by the Government.

your questions answered In the current economic climate, I’m worried about debt. Why is Advanced Learning worth investing in?
How long will it take me to hear the outcome of a loan application?
We know times are tough, but an Advanced Learning course could be the springboard you need to get the job or promotion you want. What’s more, if you take out an 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, during any length of time after your course that you’re earning less than £21,000, you won’t pay back a penny.
Applications submitted online that don’t require any further supporting evidence (because you’ve provided your valid UK passport details) should be processed within 4-5 days. All other applications should be processed within 2-4 weeks. The exact timing will be dependant on you providing correct application data and the relevant original identity evidence at the time of application.*
Does getting a loan depend on my income or credit history? No. Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your income and credit checks aren’t carried out. Repayment of the loan will depend on your income and won’t begin until your income is over £404 a week, £1,750 a month or £21,000 a year.* Is there an upper age limit for someone applying for a loan?
How much loan will I need to take out? All our course fees are less than the maximum amount available from the Student Loan Company so the fees quoted in this brochure reflect the amount of money you can borrow. You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your tuition fee or you can pay all or part of the tuition fee yourself.

How will I pay back the loan?

Repayments will be automatically deducted from your earnings through the tax system once you’ve left the course and your income is more than £21,000 a year.*
You can apply for a loan from April 8th 2013, for courses that start on or after 1st August 2013.*
When will repayments start? Repayments will start from April 2016 and there’s no need to repay until then. You can make voluntary repayments at any time in order to pay off your loan more quickly.* Do these loans apply to apprentices too? Yes, 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are available for apprentices signing up to Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships who are starting their apprenticeship on or after 1 August 2013. How to Apply
Each course listed in this brochure is available on our website with further course information, to find out more go to www.ccb.ac.uk Once you have chosen your course you can either make your application via our website by selecting the ‘Apply Online’ button on the relevant course page. Alternatively you can download an Application Form from www.ccb.ac.uk/applications, please complete and drop in (or send) to our Student Centre at the Pelham Street campus. Once you have sent your Application Form to us, you will receive an Acknowledgement and further details about how we are progressing your application. You will be asked to attend a short interview prior to enrolling to make sure it’s the right course for you.
How to Enrol Places are allocated at enrolment on a first come first served basis so you need to ensure you take action as soon as you receive your Offer Letter following your Interview. Our Student Records Team will take you through the enrolment process in our Student Centre at the main campus, Pelham Street. Fees and Concessions Information The total cost of your course will depend on the following categories: Category A: If you are aged 19 to 23 years at the time your course begins and you will be studying for your first full Level 3 or 4 course you will not need to pay any fees. If your course requires the purchase of essential equipment, uniforms, materials, CRB checks or trip costs you will not need to pay for these either. You will need to sign a Self Declaration form at enrolment confirming that you are studying for your first full Level 3 or 4 course as appropriate. Category B: If you are aged 19 to 23 as of 31 August 2013, are unemployed AND claiming a state benefit AND completing the course to improve your employability you will not need to pay any fees. If your course requires the purchase of essential equipment, uniforms, materials, CRB checks or trip costs you will not need to pay for these either. You will need to bring current evidence of your benefit with you to enrolment (dated within the last 3 months) and sign a Self Declaration form confirming that you are actively seeking employment. Category C: If you are aged 19 to 23 as of 31 August 2013 and do not fall within Categories A or B, you will be paying a proportion of the Government funding rate (the fee against Category C on your Offer Letter is the figure you need to pay). You may be eligible to apply to our Learner Support Fund for help with this fee. Category D: If you are aged 24 or over at the time your course starts you will need to pay the whole fee yourself or you may be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

happen What if my Employer is paying for the course? If your employer is paying for your course, they will need to complete a Contract of Sponsorship form. This form can be downloaded from www.ccb.ac.uk/applications. Contracts should be returned to the Finance Department before you enrol. The address is: Finance Department, Room PT220, City College Brighton and Hove, Pelham Street, Brighton, BN1 4FA If we have received your Contract of Sponsorship you will not be required to pay any fees when you enrol.
Part Payment Agreement If you are unable to pay for the full cost of the course at the point of enrolment you may be able to enter into a part payment agreement with the College. You will need to pay at least 25% of your fees when you enrol and will be asked to enter into a direct debit agreement that you will pay all of the course fees, even if you withdraw from the course. Please remember to bring with you your bank details when you come in to enrol.
Fee Assessment for Non-EEA Students If you are not from the UK or the European Economic Area (EEA) you will be required to provide your passport or Home Office papers so we can assess if you are eligible to pay the same fees as UK and EEA learners. You will be contacted about this after applying.
Students from the EEA Students from the EEA do not need to attend a fee assessment but will have to provide proof of nationality when they enrol.
