n artista crea un’impresa immobiliare che costruisce e vende case a prezzi accessibili favorendo l’integrazione di famiglie provenienti da slums in aree abitative per comunità creative (Row House Community Development Corporation, Houston, USA). Un gruppo di artisti, scrittori, fotografi e registi, accompagna per 9 anni un villaggio di pescatori in un percorso di cittadinanza attiva che li attiva nel difendere la propria sopravvivenza e dignità (Gudran El-Max, Alexandria, Egypt). Un collettivo di writers, architetti, fotografi, comunicatori, prende possesso di alcuni edifici abbandonati nel cuore di un’area urbana di 1 milione di metri quadrati su cui è prevista un’operazione immobiliare che cambierà una parte importante della città e attiva un processo di attenzione e discussione urbanistica dal basso (UrbeRigenerazione Urbana, Torino). Sono solo tre esempi dei molti progetti riuniti dalla XV edizione di Arte al Centro di una Trasformazione Sociale Responsabile che inaugura contemporaneamente a Biella e a Graz (Austria) presso l’iconico edificio della Kunsthaus. Cittadellarte è sempre più un organismo ramificato e multicefalo (con più teste), ma con una sola anima. Le sue variegate teste sono le organizzazioni con cui le collaborazioni si articolano in modo sempre più strutturato, dalla Colombia al sud del Mediterraneo, dall’Europa agli Stati Uniti, dando forma e continuità nel mondo a quei cantieri di ri-evoluzione urbana che da sempre realizza e che sono sfociati esplicitamente nell’opera collettiva realizzata alla II Biennale di Arte Urbana di Bordeaux nel 2011. L’anima è una tensione verso una nuova e palpitante declinazione del concetto di democrazia lungo i binari della concreta sperimentazione, dell’impegno diretto e operativo, del coinvolgimento aperto e in fieri che potremmo chiamare, con un neologismo, demopraxia. Con questo termine intendiamo appunto quelle pratiche e quei metodi che declinano non tanto (non primariamente) il potere del popolo, quanto piuttosto ciò che le persone fanno nello e dello spazio pubblico, quello che esse realizzano praticamente, come risposta urgente e de-ideologizzata (autonoma) alle gravi e impellenti domande della contemporaneità. Sotto questo segno di evidente impronta Pistolettiana (tanto che potrebbe essere rappresentato graficamente appunto dal nuovo segno di infinito, da quel Terzo Paradiso con cui si annuncia anche l’operaazione globale del rebirth-day, vedi rebirth-day.org) si trovano un edificio in paglia di riso, una serie di progetti realizzati dagli artisti del programma Università delle Idee (perfomance ed eventi di calcio che coinvolgono varie associazioni del tessuto civile, laboratori nelle panetterie, video, interviste, racconti, opere sonore, azioni meditativo-esplorative e molte altre forme che l’arte assume manifestandosi nelle comunità etniche, nella natura, nelle associazioni e nelle istituzioni), l’attivazione della collezione del FRAC (primo Fondo regionale per l’arte contemporanea italiano, istituito dalla Regione Piemonte nel 2007 e gestito dal 2011 da Cittadellarte) in laboratori artistici e

the art of demopraxy didattici a Biella e in altre sedi, una mostra che diventa tavolo di incontro e lavoro permanente per diverse realtà piemontesi attive nella trasformazione delle città (e dei territori in genere) attraverso l’arte, una nuova modalità di intendere il concetto di patrimonio mondiale dell’umanità sperimentata sul campo (nel centro storico della città di Sanremo) e tante altre realtà. Che cosa sta succedendo? Lo raccontiamo da quando siamo nati come Fondazione. Lo narriamo e lo realizziamo direttamente. Lo esponiamo in questa Rassegna. E in particolare nella giornata di inaugurazione del 5 ottobre, con due simposi dedicati uno, a come l’arte stia cambiando alcuni punti chiave del nostro vivere e abitare, l’altro a come la filiera dell’architettura sostenibile possa avere effetti e impatto oltre la sua sfera specifica, fino all’intero contesto sociale. A Biella, dunque, e a Graz, Cittadellarte presenta modi e metodi di questa ormai manifesta trasformazione sociale responsabile a cui dal 1998 dedica la sua principale attività espositiva. Di tutto questo si tratta approfonditamente, con testi e riflessioni mirate, con apparati critici e presentazioni, nelle pubblicazioni che accompagnano questa edizione, presentate a novembre 2012 ad Artissima. A
n artist creates a real estate company that builds and sells houses at accessible prices, encouraging the integration of families from slums into creative residential communities (Row House Community Development Corporation, Houston, USA). A group of artists, writers, photographers and film directors accompanies a fishing village for nine years on its course toward active citizenship, activating the inhabitants to defend their lifestyle and dignity (Gudran El-Max, Alexandria, Egypt). A collective of writers, architects, photographers and communicators take over a number of abandoned buildings in the heart of an urban area of 1 million square metres (for which a property development is planned that will change a significant portion of the city), initialising a process of attention and discussion on urban development from the bottom up (Urbe-Urban Regeneration, Turin). These are just three of the many projects presented by the XV edition of Art at the centre of a Responsible Social Transformation inaugurated simultaneously in Biella and in Graz (Austria) in the iconic Kunsthaus building. Cittadellarte has become an increasingly ramified and ‘multicephalic’ (many-headed) organism, but with a single soul. Its various heads are the organisations with which the foundation is developing increasingly structured collaborations, from Colombia to the south Mediterranean, from Europe to the United States, giving form and continuity in the world to the construction sites of urban re-evolution that has always realized and that explicitly emerged in the collective work
actualized at the II Biennial of Urban Art in Bordeaux in 2011. This soul is a tension toward a new and pulsating declination of the concept of democracy along the lines of concrete experimentation, of direct and working commitment, open and ongoing involvement that we, with a neologism, have called demopraxy. We use this term to cover all those practises and methods that decline not much (not primarily) the power of the people, but rather that which people do in and of public space, the things they create practically as urgent and de-ideologised (autonomous) response to the grave and impelling demands of contemporary life. Under this banner with an evidently ‘Pistolettian’ imprint (so much that it could be easily represented graphically by the new sign of infinity, that Third Paradise that also announces the global art-action of rebirth-day, (see rebirth-day.org) we find a building in rice-straw, a series of projects realised by artists from the Università delle Idee program (performances and events involving various associations from the social fabric, workshops in bakeries, videos, interviews, narratives, works with sound, meditative-explorative actions and many other forms that art assumes in ethnic communities, nature, associations and institutions) the activation of the FRAC collection (first regional fund for contemporary Italian art, established by the Region of Piedmont and managed since 2007 by Cittadellarte), in artistic-didactic workshops in Biella and other cities: an exhibition that becomes a round table for meetings and ongoing works for a range of realities in Piedmont active in the transformation
of cities (and the territory in general) through art, a new way of understanding the concept of world heritage experienced in the field (in the historic centre of Sanremo) and many other realities. What’s going on? We’ve been talking about it since we were born as a Foundation. We narrate it and create it directly. We present it in this Review. And especially on the day of the inauguration, the 5th of October, with two symposiums the first dedicated to how art is changing some key aspects of our lives and our relation with the places we live in, the other to how the chain of sustainable architecture can have impact and effect beyond its specific sphere, to influence the entire social context. So, in Biella and in Graz, Cittadellarte presents the ways and means of this now manifest responsible social transformation to which it has dedicated its major exhibitive efforts since 1998. All this is handled in depth, through targeted texts and reflections, critiques and presentations, in the publications that accompany this edition, to be presented in November 2012 at Artissima.
