Our Focus On Reading

Who am I as a learner? Do I have a best learning style? This week, students reflected on these questions by taking learning style surveys and interpreting the data. We have begun research that will be used in our final unit project. Students have been collecting and recording the forms and functions of important parts of the brain from informational texts. Reading and understanding texts that describe information about a topic requires special skills and practice. Students used skimming and scanning, as well as graphic organizers to decide which words, phrases and sentences were important and how they connect to our central idea.

Independent reading, guided reading and book clubs are the ways that student will learn about reading and learn through reading in grade 5. Reading material will be varied and include novels, informational and non-fiction texts as well as current news articles. Students will keep a log of books they have read or listened to throughout the year. We will regularly make entries into a Reading Response Journal to record our thinking about what we’ve read. Encouraging a love of reading, and increasing the volume of what we read are our goals.

Mathematics Students continue to review and practice number skills through rounding, using estimation and learning about place value. We linked mathematics with our unit this week, when we took a survey designed to measure the Multilpe Intelligences. Data will be collected and analysed, then transferred into an Excel document. Using ICT skills to create colorful pie graphs and charts to display the information will be the next step.

Single Subjects in PYP5 Advanced Danish . In Danish the students have started working in “Stavevejen for spelling and language development. We have continued the discussions about the differences between boys and girls. We will make experiments with the 5 senses.

PE Fifth grade students had their first day of swimming last Friday and how fantastic it was to see nearly everyone organised with swimsuits, goggles, towels and enthusiasm, we are looking forward to the next 4 sessions. In the gym we have started to connect to the unit of enquiry looking at how we learn to move and how we can â€?un-learnâ€?´and â€?re-learnâ€? skills.

Intermediate This week we started focusing on “Hjernen the brain. All students are reading and writing about parts and functions of the brain. Using information from the main class work on the same topic helps to understand the easy Danish informational texts. The language focus is mainly on reading and talking about the information gained.

Art PYP 5 have been inquiring into what value means in art and have been painting self-portraits using different values of grey. Once finished we discussed the definition of “personal values and completed our art by painting our personal values as a background to our self-portraits.

Beginner Danish Students have been practicing introductory sentences about themselves and others. They have been using the atlases for this as well. With our classroom scavenger hunt they are using the Danish dictionaries.
