Parent Conferences

Unit Four: Sharing the Planet Language Persuasive or Expository writing has been the focus the language program this week. Students are learning effective techniques for writing text that takes a stand and supports and opinion with evidence. We are choosing vocabulary and transition words that make writing more persuasive. Students continue reading books of their choice in guided reading groups. We have been linking our unit concepts of causation and change to events in the novels. Please IOS PORTFOL N R RETU an no later th ry 6. a ru b e F y a Mond . u o y k Than

Unit of Inquiry Field Trip

In Unit Four, we inquire in to the causes and consequences of conflict in the world and people’s historic struggle to maintain peace. We will visit Frihedsmuseet (The Museum of Danish Resistance) on Friday 10 February for a guided tour where we will learn how the Danish people reacted during German occupation from 1941-1945. Student will be asked to bring a packed lunch on Friday 10 February. See: http://www.natmus.dk/sw23424.asp

Mathematics This week we have been thinking about angles and their unit of measurement the degree. Ask your child to show you the angles 180°, 90°, 45°, 60° and 30° using the hands of a clock. Next week we will begin to look more closely at capacity and volume.Volume is the measure of space taken up by a threedimensional object. The space within a container is known as its capacity but as the thickness of many containers is negligible, it has become acceptable to refer to the space inside as volume too. Two different practical situations need to be experienced by students as they learn about volume. One relates to experiences involving "how much space does a three-dimensional object occupy?" which eventually leads to measures of volume derived from measuring the length of the object’s dimensions. The other set of experiences relates to measures of fluids.

Advanced The students are looking into Danish history around King Chr. 4th and King Frederik 3rd and the wars and peace with Sweden. After watching the movie “Gøngehøvdingen” we will concentrate on King Chr. 4thand his time. Next book report is due Feb. 9th. Intermediate As a lead up to the exhibition we are spending a lesson weekly to look at Danish philanthropists and the action they take to help people less fortunate. For literature component the class is reading cartoons, Rasmus Klump, a popular children’s character. Exhibition Information Meeting Minutes For those of you who were unable to attend, we have outlined the main points of the meeting.

The Exhibition is a student-driven inquiry

Groups of 3,4 or 5 will collaborate on the process

Individual students will inquire into an problem in the world or local community

A key component of the Exhibition is a student action that will result from the process

The choice of focus is key and students will be guided to choose a problem that is researchable, suitable for action and at the student’s level

Students will be guided by classroom teachers who will organize a structure with weekly questions

Groups will meet weekly with mentors who will also supervise and facilitate the process

The Exhibition will be presented in early June to the school and community

The completion of the Exhibition is a requirement for successfully completing the PYP

Single Subjects PE We have had our first lessons back in the gym this week and have been revising some of the units we did out in the tent in the past months. What a difference it makes being indoors in a proper gym with all the equipment available. With this in mind can I remind you all that gym shoes should be non-marking and for indoor use only. PE clothing should be appropriate for action and activity in a somewhat warmer climate. Art PYP 5 have begun their inquiry into how art can be used to help prompt peace around the world. They have been using sketching pencils to create observational drawings of small sections of Picasso’s ”Guernica”.
