GRADE 5 NEWSLETTER
How the World Works WHAT HAVE WE BEEN LEARNING?
Language WRITING Materials, method and conclusion are
just some of the parts of Procedural Text—the writing focus for this unit. This genre of writing is also known as writing to instruct or inform. We have been reading informational and procedural texts and identifying the parts and their purposes.. READING In guided reading groups, we reviewed
the strategies effective readers use to deepen understanding of informational text. Using a thinking and note-taking skill called “word, phrase, sentence”, students learned how to pull meaning from complex texts that might be above their current reading level, but still valuable for finding information.

PE
On the Friday before the holiday, 5th graders explored “energy stations”—a collection of simple experiments and demonstrations designed to model examples of heat, light, mechanical, chemical and sound energy use and transfer. Ask your child about the energy transfers they see happening in the world around them. See the photos above.
We are exploring gymnastics in PE at the moment. Our aim as a group is to create a gymnastics working area and a performance that reflects the gymnastics components we have been focusing on.
The planning for Spring Fair 2012 is underway and the PTA has started collecting for the class baskets.
Exhibition
The students are working in groups to compose a piece of music and fuse it with visual imagery in order to educate a specific age group about energy. Students are synthesizing their knowledge about energy, musical elements, art, video, drama, and target audience to create a truly transdisciplinary project!
Planning for the Exhibition projects is underway. Students and teachers are using Gmail and GoogleDocs to assign, record and keep track of Exhibition assignments. If you have not had a chance to see it, ask your child to give you a quick
