Unit Four: Sharing the Planet

Unit of Inquiry Grade 5’s trip to Language This week’s writing investigations have the Danish Resistance Museum before the holiday was a great success. Students were able to learn about some of the tactics and see first hand some of the equipment used by the Danish Resistance fighters during WWII. Students were especially interested to hear how young Danes, some as young as 14, took an active and important part in the Resistance. The trip to the museum provided us an opportunity to access our host country’s history as an avenue to investigate the causes of consequences of conflict. Reading the text Darkness over Denmark has also been of great interest to the students as they are able to connect with its familiar names and locations.

We then practiced planning, drafting and revising concise nonfiction paragraphs. We will continue to practice this important skill over thenext few weeks. Intermediate This week we follow Danish tradition by celebrating Fastelavn. The assembly on Friday will be an introduction to the different elements and games of the festival. Following the classes’ learning about WW2 we will share reading a comic book describing the life of families during this period of war in Europe.

“Guernica” PYP 5 have been creating art that reflects the tragedies of war. They have also been designing t-shirt logo’s for Team Peru.
