Unit One: Live to Learn Language

Unit of Inquiry

During the year, we will learn about the different forms and purposes for writing. Writing to Explain will be the focus of Unit One and we will practice writing to inform and explain using different text types. We will focus reading instruction and practice on those strategies used when reading informational text.

Unit One is under the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are. This is an inquiry into the nature of the self, physical and mental health and what it means to be human. In PYP5, students learn about learning. Our Central Idea is: Learning is a process of making connections. We explore the questions: What is learning? What are the different ways people learn? How do I learn best? We also inquire into the form and functions of the brain. We will investigate the parts of the brain that control our thinking, emotions and reflexes.

In our literature program, we will read a variety of novels chosen by both students and teachers. Our program will include independent reading, reading in groups or book clubs and occasionally reading a whole-class novel. Reading for pleasure, understanding and comprehension will be the focus of instruction. Whenever possible, the language program will be taught through the Unit of Inquiry.

Mathematics Our math program will follow the five strands of the IB Math Scope and Sequence which teaches the math concepts of Number, Pattern & Function, Measurement, Shape & Space, and Data Handling. During our first unit, Number, students will explore numbers as a language used to express quantities and the relationships between quantities. Students will learn about the ways numbers are used to interpret information, make decisions, and solve problems. We will review the basic math operations, the relationships between them, and practice both mental and written strategies to solve problems.
