PYP5 Newsletter Unit Two: Where We Are In Place & Time Unit of Inquiry
Language
Unit Two is an investigation into the theme: Where we are in place and time. We call this unit, In the News since it will be an opportunity to learn about current events and how information is reported. Our Central Idea is Current issues can be investigated from different perspectives.
During Unit Two we will focus on the reading and thinking strategies and develop reading comprehension. We will learn that fluent readers use expression, tone and varying speed to help deepen their understanding of text. Students will practice questioning skills and learn that questions have different levels of depth. Structured reading groups continue and we will use the elements of story as topic for discussion.
Mathematics We continue our exploration of number with a continued focus on the mental math skills and strategies that support all higher level math understanding.

Newspapers! A central resource for this unit will be newspapers and other media from around the world. Therefore, we would like to request that each student bring an entire newspaper with them to school on Monday, 24 October. It may be in any language and from any country—try picking one up on your holiday!

It was nice to meet you at parent conferences and talk about your child. The students self-analysis of language acquisition has been an eye-opener, as they realize there are more language strategies they could use. Now students are focusing on skits for meeting a new person.
We start this new unit by reading Grimm’s fairy tale about “The four Musicians from Bremen.”
Please look in the portfolios for the letter to the Emperor of The Land of Senses! After being busy with Parent Conferences we will start unit 2 looking into Danish News. The students will work in groups preparing for making their own breaking news in Danish. Next Book report is due October13.
The class will share reading aloud with a focus on pronunciation and intonation. Later on the students are to start developing a recount about events from the Fairy tale.

We have had our first couple of weeks in the temporary ”Tent gym” and have been pleasantly surprised by how much space there is. A reminder to ALL it will be cold as the outside temperatures drop, please have appropriate clothing in gym bags.
Our first intensive unit of Drama! We have been working on building our ensembles, as well as baseline assessments this week. Next week we will begin working with the first of the key concepts of the unit-Perspective.
We are beginning our first unit in Music with an investigation into how music can be used as a tool for social change. Our first conceptual focus is Causation, as we examine why music is used in this way.
