Grade5 Newsletter Unit Two: Where We are in Place and Time Language During this unit, we will focus on becoming more fluent readers. Fluency is the ability to read with expression to demonstrate an understanding of the author’s message; it is more than accurate recognition of words on a page. Fluent readers comprehend text better and are able to convey their interpretations to others. This reading skill will help us as we interpret news articles during this unit of inquiry and as students present their newscasts for the Open House. Writing objectives this unit will focus on skills related to both objective and subjective writing as we explore writing to recount.

Unit of Inquiry

Our central idea for this unit is: Current Issue can be investigated from different perspectives. Our inquiry will be guided by the questions What is news? What are the important and relevant news stories that we should be aware of today? What are the perspectives? What is my opinion? Our investigations and research will lead to a whole-class performance. This year’s OPEN HOUSE will be a presentation in the form of a newscast where we will share the news that matters most to us.

Mathematics We will be investigating multiplication and division, both of which are critical foundations for more difficult concepts in number, algebra, measurement and statistics. Thinking multiplicatively involves many different mathematical ideas as well as constructing and manipulating factors (the numbers that are multiplied) in response to a variety of contexts. Being multiplicative also involves having key items of knowledge, for example, basic facts such as 5x3, available as points of leverage to find unknown results.

Single Subjects in PYP5 Beginner Danish

Intermediate Danish

Advanced Danish

The students have recently had a very intensive reading of the class text to build sentence structure and reinforce vocabulary. They are now taking a break from this and focusing on news in Denmark. The emphasis is on making connections and cultural understanding.

The class is reading Danish newspapers, mostly shorter articles from these. The purpose of the reading is to practice reading Danish, to find information and understand the perspective of this written information. The next step is to get the students to report their findings using Danish language.

Students have worked in groups to make their own breaking news. They have chosen news from newspapers from one day – the same for all - and now are preparing to video their presentations using I-pads, phones or laptops. The next book review is due October 17th.

Drama Our work focuses on perspective and we have created Nursery Rhyme News bulletins, devised our own versions of a fairy tale from the perspective of a minor character and created our own story behind newspaper photographs. Our next task will be to decide what to show at the concert on Nov. 16th!

PE

Music

W e have been looking at skills and drills related to both soccer and volleyball . Our focus has been on ball control and adjusting our movement in relation to limited space. We have been playing modified games that allow us to put our skills in to practice while at the same time controlling the way we move both the ball and our own bodies.

In Music we have explored a variety of songs that call for social change. Following this exploration, the students have chosen an issue to express in an original composition. We look forward to sharing some of these songs with on on November 16th!
