Unit Two: In the News

SCHOOL CLOSED for students

Language Students have taken on the role of news reporter as they have researched and written about a news event as a piece of writing to recount. Working in groups, students wrote individual news stories and they will collaborate in teams to present these stories as part of a TV news cast at our Open House next week. Students will also use fluency and intonation to add meaning to a newscast script they created based on an issue of interest.

Unit of Inquiry Who cares? A central aspect of our current inquiry is the idea that news can be seen from multiple perspectives. After establishing a class definition of news– current events which are important, relevant and significant—students were asked to begin identifying the stakeholders in a variety of news items. They were asked, “Who cares?” and, “What does each of the stakeholders have to gain or lose?” These questions are intended to help them distinguish different perspectives surrounding the issue and help them think through and eventually develop an opinion of their own.

Mathematics We continue to learn about multiplication and division in mathematics, and students are working to develop a broad range of multiplication and division strategies. This requires development of a diverse range of multiplication strategies and the transfer of these strategies to division. How can you help your child with mathematics at home? See http://nzmaths.co.nz/families for some useful resources.

Single Subjects in Grade 5 Beginner Danish

Intermediate Danish

Advanced Danish

The students have been combing the Copenhagen Post Newspapers from the last several months to find relevant articles about Danes in Denmark. We have had interesting conversations as they present their findings and explain their own connections to the news.

The class have read articles from Danish Newspapers and taken notes about their reading. We focused on the “who, what, where, when and why” when reporting about readings.

Students have finished their “Breaking Danish News” and you will be able to watch them on laptops for the open house. Please also have a look in the Portfolio where you will find a goal for the next two units of Danish

Drama

Music

Thanks to those parents who were able to attend the News Concert on Wednesday. I know the students were glad to have an audience for their work.

Congratulations to the students of PYP5 on the hard work they put into preparing for their music and drama performance!

These last two weeks have been used to complete and rehearse presentation pieces as well as revisit the theatre terms pre-assessments and complete self-evaluations and goal setting for the next time we meet in the Spring.

In our last week of music, the students will be reflecting on the songwriting process as they finish up their original ”songs with a message.” We will look foraward to having music with PYP5 again in the spring.
