Grade5 Newsletter UNIT THREE: How We Express Ourselves Language: Snapshot Writing Over the past many weeks, students have been exploring writing through snapshots. Students wrote short pieces of text that describe moments in time. The events and experiences described were significant and memorable to the writers. After writing, students were able to reflect on the memories and connect them to beliefs and values in their lives. Students practiced using rich descriptive and figurative language to enhance the stories. We will publish our stories together with art work from our art reflection project in individual books in the new year.

Unit of Inquiry Our guiding statement is: We do what we do because of what we beleive. In this unit, students have been exploring personal beliefs and values. Over this past week, we have investigated the ways beliefs and values are reflected and celebrated in the world’s major religions. With a focus on the simlarities, students will identify the common elements and learn how beliefs are expressed through actions and behaviors.

Mathematics In the past two weeks, students have explored how to find the area of a rectangle by using the lengths of the sides. Students have developed their understanding of area by starting with activities where they counted the area of a shape in individual units. The next step was to skip count the number of units in either the rows or the columns, before beginning to use the formula length multiplied by height. Time was given for students to revise measuring lengths of sides with rulers.

The students have enjoyed celebrating Danish Jule-traditions, Making Jule-decorations, baking pebernødder and dancing around the Jule-træ singing Danish Julesongs. After the holiday we plan to finish our Jule-posters and present them for class.

PYP Exhibition In the first weeks of the new year, we will begin to discuss and make plans for our final unit of the year, the PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition is the culmination of the PYP providing students will an opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge, think conceptually about a problem in the world and collaborate on an action plan designed to make a difference. The students will be working in collaborative groups, yet will be able to choose any area of interest for individual research.

The Exhibition will be completed and presented in Unit 6. We will be spending time during the next two units preparing.

Mentors The Exhibition Mentors are an integral part of the PYP Exhibition. Each group will be assigned a mentor to guide and facilitate discussion within the group. We would like to continue using parent volunteers to fulfill the mentor role. Much more information to come…

French & German Switch

“In PE we have been creating games using lots of equipment, like hoola hoops, balls and bats. We have been working in groups and have to name our games. We had to play each others’ games and then review them. It’s been really fun”

Students will have the opportunity to explore the other language when we swich classes in late January. In the spring, parents and students will be asked to choose either German or French for a full year of instuction in grade 6. If you have any questions about the language program please contact Ute Reichert, the MYP language coordinator.
