2022

M essage from our CEO

Dear Friends, Family, and Partners, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Southeast Harris and Brazoria County would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support. Despite our challenges, we remain steadfast in our mission to provide a supportive community for students, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our success is primarily due to our partners’ unwavering dedication and our staff’s passion, who work tirelessly to meet the needs of students and families in these unprecedented times.

With a deep commitment to serving children and families, we have expanded our reach to serve more students than ever. We are fully committed to providing resources and quality programs to all students and

families, and during the 2021-2022 school year, we served over 8,500 case-managed students. However, we have also observed an increase in the need for mental health services, and we are working diligently to ensure that all students have access to the support they require. Once again, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation for your continued support as we work together to make a difference in the lives of the students we serve.

A bout CIS

Our Mission

Our Mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

What We Do

Communities In Schools (CIS) collaborates with school districts, educators, parents, and community partners to provide during the school day and afterschool programs that address the challenges students face in achieving academic success. By identifying and removing barriers to learning, CIS creates customized support plans for students and families, including individual case management services. The organization also engages with the community to ensure that all students receive the resources they need to succeed. CIS continually monitors academic progress, behavior, and attendance, tracking educational outcomes for all students served. Ultimately, the goal of CIS is to empower young people to learn, stay in school, graduate, and prepare for a successful future.

Crisis Intervention

The Communities In Schools (CIS) Crisis Intervention Program provides essential services like crisis response, emergency response, individual case-management, group services, and public awareness services. The program provides immediate access to crucial resources such as mental health, legal, and other community resources for students and family victims affected by crimes like child abuse/neglect, domestic and family violence, bullying, homicide, and sex-trafficking. Additionally, the specialists collaborate with schools to ensure effective support to reduce the likelihood of children engaging in criminal behavior due to victimization or lack of access to resources that meet their basic needs.

We specialize in providing mental health services to all students and families including:

Advocacy – Ensuring that students and families VOICES are HEARD, and that fair, equal, and appropriate assistance is received.

Intervention support – Providing intervention for family support to help rebuild HOPE and restore FAITH after a crisis or trauma has occurred.

Trauma informed and victim care – Ensuring the emotional HEALTH of our STUDENTS and FAMILIES, through education, empowerment, support, and TRUST.

SEL – Social, Emotional Learning support including establishing a trusting RELATIONSHIP, intentional RELEVANT activities and discussions, while creating a goal of lasting RESILIENCE.

Mental health support – Professional SUPPORTIVE RESOURCES provided to those students, and families whose thoughts, feelings, moods, and ability to relate has been disrupted.

Campus Locations 2021-2022

Alvin

The mission of Premier Academy is to promote a safe, organized, caring and supportive environment that strives to empower children to be a community of learners in which each member strives for academic excellence and cares about one another. Our focus is on the whole child as we encourage each child to meet academic challenges with openness, enthusiasm, and a willingness to solve problems while encouraging integrity, leadership, and global citizenship.

“I think Premier is really fun, because I get to meet all kinds of new friends, and we also get to do really fun things like baking!” - 6th grade Premier Academy Student

“I love Premier because it helps me calm down when we do activities like painting, and I get to learn about spiders, bugs, and whales.” -1st Grade Premier Academy Student

“I really enjoy it when we do science activities and my favorite activity which is cooking!” 4th Grade Premier Academy Student

“I like when we get to do robotics and STEM stations, especially when we get to build something” - 3rd Grade Premier Academy Student

“This program has been a lifesaver for my child and me. It has taken a huge burden and stress off my shoulders. I don’t have to worry about who is watching my child and if he is in a good learning environment. He has blossomed so much with this program. He went from refusing and being upset about having to change his routine. Telling me he did not want to go and that I couldn’t make him to now, loving it and getting mad if I picked him up to early. He talks about how nice and helpful everyone is in the program. This program has been a huge blessing to me. Thank you for everything you guys do.” Premier Academy Parent

"We are very happy with the services provided by Premier Academy! My son loves this after-school program so much, that he asks to stay later than necessary. They help him with homework and then engage the kids in fun and educational activities. My son says Ms. T is a great teacher. Ms. T goes above and beyond. She knows the kids well and provides us with constant updates/communication." Premier Academy Parent

Success Stories

Two sisters were referred to CIS for help with food assistance. As the year progressed, Mr. Cullen and the campus staff began to notice that the girls would come to school with clothing that had an unpleasant odor. The young girls felt self-conscious, and it began to affect their self-esteem. Mr. Cullen immediately requested new clothing items for the girls and also purchased personal hygiene products. As the year went on, the girls were case managed by the CIS Program and they were able to receive items such as a warm jacket, shoes and more items that the girls needed. Mr. Cullen also partnered them with a mentor who met with the students twice a month to help build their self-esteem. By the end of the school year, the sisters were thriving. They walked the campus with confidence and a huge smile knowing there were no barriers that would keep them from focusing in school. Mr. Cullen understood the CIS mission, which is to empower students so they can be successful in the classroom and beyond.

Nahomi and Yuleni, both 21-22 Columbia High School honors graduates, have been actively involved in Communities In Schools Stand by Peace for all four years of high school. They demonstrated exceptional leadership skills by serving as president and co-president of Stand by Peace for their last two years of high school. During their freshman year, they volunteered over 50 hours mentoring for the ACE Afterschool program at West Columbia Elementary through CIS- Stand by Peace. Their selfless commitment to community service is truly remarkable. We are thrilled to share that Yuleni will attend Texas A&M University, where she will major in biomedical science, while Nahomi will attend Texas University, where she will major in public health. Congratulations to Nahomi and Yuleni on their outstanding achievements, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors!

Dominic faced a significant setback during his senior year of high school when he lost his grandfather. The loss left him feeling unmotivated and unsure if he could complete his studies. However, with the unwavering support and guidance of his CIS Site Coordinator, Mrs. Dana Buckley, Dominic was able to overcome his struggles and successfully walk across the stage on Friday, May 20th of 2022. We recognize Dominic's remarkable achievement and know that his grandfather would be immensely proud of him. Congratulations, Dominic, on this well-deserved accomplishment!

Mayte faced challenges during her high school journey, but she proudly celebrated her graduation day. Her success is credited to the support and guidance of her Communities In Schools Site Coordinator, Mrs. Lewis, who recognized her potential and encouraged her throughout her academic journey. Mayte's achievements are a testament to her hard work and determination. Congratulations, Mayte, on this remarkable accomplishment!
