MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO Dear Friends, Family, and Partners, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your continued support as Communities In Schools (CIS) Southeast Harris and Brazoria County stays committed to serving children and families in need.

We at CIS continue to renew our commitment to our mission to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life regardless of the challenges we may face. The strength and success of CIS are attributed to the dedicated support of our partners, and the love and passion of our staff serving students and families in need in these unprecedented times.

With our love and passion to serve children and families, we have been able to reach more students within new service areas. We are committed to providing the students and families with resources and quality programing. We were able to provide services to over 10,000 students in the 2020/2021 school year. We witnessed an increase in the need for mental health services and we are committed to finding Donna Montes, CEO and providing as many mental health resources as possible to aid the students who are struggling with these issues. It is our job to help our children know how important they are and that they have a community of support to get them through these difficult times.

Our agency, with the generous support from our partners, was able to provide $122,339 for emergency assistance to aid with food and housing assistance to ensure that all students would continue to have their basic needs met so they could be successful in school. We were able to provide 29,300 hours of basic needs assistance.

I often reflect on the honor, blessing, and continued responsibility before us to meet the needs of students. I am grateful for the opportunity to carry out the mission of CIS with such an amazing and committed staff who truly put others before themselves.

Our Mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

WHAT WE DO

CIS offers during the day and afterschool programs which partner with school districts, educators, parents and community partners to identify barriers to success and address the needs of students.

Once the needs are identified, CIS customizes support for students and families providing individual case management services while engaging the community as part of this process. CIS reviews individual academic progress, behavior and attendance records, and tracks educational outcomes for all students served. CIS exists to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, graduate, and prepare for life.

CIS-ACE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS

The Communities In Schools ACE Program (outside of school hours) is a FREE program that helps to improve student attendance, behavior, and academics, while providing safe supplemental learning space for students and families. Our programs are structured with ample opportunity to engage in math, reading and science enrichment, as well as a wide array of fine arts education, physical recreation, character-building, service-learning, tutoring and other personal enrichment activities not always available during the regular school day.

I am very grateful for the ACE team. My daughter is so happy to go to school and participate in ACE. I love how she learns life skills and how to be independent. I love how she explains everything she learns in ACE. Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

CRISIS INTERVENTION CIS stands behind the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to succeed. We become the voice for our children and families as we have dedicated our lives to serve those in need. Our organization was founded to meet the needs of the most at-risk students, and we achieve that by meeting students where they are in the fullness of their differences be it race, learning challenges, poverty, or social/ emotional struggles. CIS creates a climate where all students’ differences are embraced, and students are safe to explore their differences and the differences of others.

We specialize in providing mental health services to all students and families including:

ADVOCACY – Ensuring that students and families VOICES are HEARD, and that fair, equal, and appropriate assistance is received.

SEL – Social, Emotional Learning support including establishing a trusting RELATIONSHIP, intentional RELEVANT activities and discussions, while creating a goal of lasting RESILIENCE. MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT – Professional SUPPORTIVE RESOURCES

CYD PROGRAM

The Community Youth Development (CYD) Program serves youth up to the age of 17, with an emphasis on youth between the ages of 10-17. CYD eligible youth live in and/or attend school in one of our targeted ZIP codes. Mentoring, youth leadership development and our Youth Advisory Committee are service components that we provide. These programs also meet specific community youth needs, including: • Academic support services • Life skills and career development • Character education • Conflict resolution • Rites of passage programs • Youth sports and recreational services • Programs that promote family support and involvement

PREMIER ACADEMY AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

The mission of Premier Academy is to promote a safe, organized, caring and supportive environment that strives to empower children to be a community of learners in which each member strives for academic excellence and cares about one another. Our focus is on the whole child as we encourage each child to meet academic challenges with openness, enthusiasm, and a willingness to solve problems while encouraging integrity, leadership, and global citizenship.

OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19 Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, students and families are continually being affected. Our programs continue to partner with school districts to help support and mitigate the impact that COVID has on our vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. We have faced daunting challenges to make sure that students receive the resources and services they need to achieve in the classroom and beyond Student Re-engagement during the pandemic (sending encouragement, virtual mentoring, classroom guidance, mailing student activities, check-ins) – 5175 Students receiving virtual mental health, crisis, or Social Emotional Learning (SEL) services (virtual group counseling, individual tele-counseling, crisis intervention, video SEL lessons) – 4586 Students receiving attendance services (finding and connecting with missing students, attendance incentives – 5172 Students receiving virtual tutoring, credit recovery, delivering school assignments, academic recognition, and summer school – 4548

SUCCESS STORIES As we go through life, we are all faced with obstacles.

At a young age, my parents have instilled the qualities in me to never let my disability define or shape who I am. Since then, I have overcome many obstacles and expectations. Therefore, I have made it my mission to disperse these qualities onto others so they too can succeed. My journey with Communities In Schools started my sophomore year when I joined Stand By Peace. I wanted to find a way to connect with other students, so I could make a difference in their lives.

Communities In Schools gave me that opportunity to help others know the consequences of drugs, bullying, and overall how to be a great peer. With my physical disability, I was able to show much more. I was able to teach students that no matter how “different” or unique you may be, you can thrive, prosper, and accomplish any goal in life. Communities In Schools held many fun and creative activities around the district to teach students various anti- drug and anti- bullying lessons, including the Red Ribbon Parade and developing skits to learn from. I am very grateful for Communities In Schools for letting me be a part of this impactful organization and for being a light to these students. Now, I am a freshman at Texas A&M University, where I am a student in the Business Honors Program at Mays Business School.

In the future, I plan on pursuing a master’s degree and

“It Takes a Village” Like many families around the country, the Smith family was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving them with financial hardships for the family of five. A former teacher of the eldest son reached out to Communities In Schools (CIS) on their behalf. We connected the family with local organizations that were able to help them with food, mortgage, utilities, and counseling. Thousands of dollars were raised to help this family in need with the consistent support of the CIS Site Coordinator and Crisis Specialist, campus staff, and the family’s local church.

becoming an entrepreneur. With the qualities learned from my parents and Communities In Schools, I hope to continue to be an inspiration to those in my university and community.

Columbia High School CIS Program

Since joining Communities In Schools, Ray’s attendance, confidence, grades, and decision-making skills have improved. He was no longer reluctant to get to class as evidenced by his reduction of tardies.

His academic performance and classroom behavior improved, and he developed a more positive outlook on life. Ray has demonstrated significant selfimprovement through his efforts this school year.

It has been most fulfilling to help foster this growth and progression as a trusted adult in his life. Ray was promoted and entered high school for the 2021-2022 school year.
