WE ROUND OUT THE 2024-25 SEASON WITH A PAIR OF CONTEMPORARY plays that will remind you of what’s most important in your life.
Karen Zacarías’ The Book Club Play is an insightful comedy about books and the people who love them. The play centers around a group of friends whose monthly meetings take a turn when a documentary filmmaker decides to film their discussions. What starts as a lighthearted conversation with wine and cheese grows into a meaningful reminder of the value of friendship. I directed The Book Club Play in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse at the end of my inaugural season in 2013. Since then, the play has gone on to be a sold-out hit at regional theatres all around the country. I’m thrilled to revisit this delightful comedy in Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre.
Next door, Birthday Candles by Noah Haidle is a poignant and whimsical exploration of life, love and the passage of time. The play unfolds over 90 years of birthdays in the life of Ernestine, who celebrates each year with a special cake (that she bakes on stage) and invites the audience to share her joys and heartaches. Directed by our Associate Artistic Director Joanie Schultz, this beautifully crafted piece reminds us to pause, reflect and celebrate life’s most ordinary moments.
As our season comes to a close, I want to thank you for taking the journey with us. The audience is an active and integral part of live theatre. You make it possible for us to share stories, create connections and make memories that last a lifetime.
It won’t be long before we are back together in the fall for a new season that’s full of variety to inspire and entertain you. From a pop-rock musical with Broadway ambitions and an exciting new adaptation of a literary classic to a mystery about Agatha Christie, an August Wilson masterpiece and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. You can see all the productions listed in the center spread of this program. The lineup truly embodies the Playhouse’s mission to bring diverse, engaging works of great artistry to our community and to put Cincinnati’s artistic excellence in the national spotlight.
I hope to see you at the theatre next season.
Cheers!

BY RUSSELL FLORENCE JR.
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Osborn Family Producing Artistic Director Blake Robison and playwright Karen Zacarías have formed a unique artistic partnership that spans multiple plays, cities and decades.
Robison produced the world premiere of The Book Club Play at Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2008 where he was Producing Artistic Director. Later, he directed it at the Playhouse during his inaugural season in 2013. Robison has since commissioned Zacarías to write Native Gardens and Shane and directed those world premieres, and he produced her play Destiny of Desire
Robison reflects on his fruitful and rewarding collaborations with Zacarías.
You have been connected with The Book Club Play since its world premiere 17 years ago. What did you find most appealing about the script then and have these feelings deepened? Have you been eager to bring this play back to the Playhouse?
Yes, I have a long history with this play! After I produced its world premiere at Round House Theatre, Karen and I continued to work on it together over the next few years. The version I directed the first time at the Playhouse is now the “published version.” It’s one of those scripts that makes me laugh out loud — and that’s always a good sign. I think that now, more than ever, we need to laugh at ourselves a bit. So, it seems like the right moment to create a new production in Moe and Jack’s Place –The Rouse Theatre to bring the laughs to a widespread audience.
You and Karen have a long-time working partnership. What does having such a familiar working relationship bring to the production process? What do you love most about working with her as a playwright?
Karen and I have been making theatre
together for 20 years. She is my most cherished collaborator and a true friend. I suppose we have a shorthand by now, and it’s built on trust. I think she trusts me with her work because I can hear her voice in the dialogue she writes. It’s a certain rhythm that is buoyant, direct and layered with heart.
Over the years, we’ve become good friends outside of the theatre too. She loves my wife, Connan, and I dig her husband, Rett. We’ve had a bunch of good meals and travels together. And now our youngest kids go to college together in Colorado! It’s rare to have that kind of friendship in this business.
What are some of your favorite books?
A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Great Gatsby and Where the Red Fern Grows.
What do you hope audiences take away from The Book Club Play experience?
Take it easy, lighten up, don’t be so critical. The play reminds you that it’s people who are dearest to you — not what they do, what they say or what they read.

We make a difference with our suppliers and customers!
Ohio, whose name originates from the Iroquoian word ohi-yo, meaning good rivers, is a testament to the deep connection between the land and the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited it for centuries. The Cincinnati region is ancestral land of many Nations, and Indigenous people are still here today. As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, we recognize and honor the enduring connection these Nations have to this territory. May we reflect on our commitment to understanding, preserving, and celebrating the rich culture of Native Indigenous communities who have shaped and continue to contribute to these lands.
It is the recognition of the Native Americans/First Nations/Indigenous Peoples who cared for these lands prior to removal. Our statement was created with guidance from our partners at the Urban Native Collective. For more information, visit urbannativecollective.org. My work and my suggestions make a difference.

margins—they're also the people who make them go, from the owners and managers to the entry-level employees. Reach out today to explore how we can support your success.
Rich vanilla, red velvet, dark chocolate, buttercream frosting, creamy ganache, a stylized fondant: Cake makes us happy. Perhaps that is why the tradition of consuming cake for one’s birthday celebration dates back thousands of years.
While the exact origins are a bit hazy, some believe the ancient Egyptians were early adopters of birthday-adjacent celebrations, marking pharaohs’ “birth” days (coronations, really) with feasts. 1 But it was the ancient Greeks who really got the (cake) ball rolling. They baked moon-shaped treats for Artemis, the goddess of the moon, complete with candles to symbolize lunar glow and, more importantly, to carry wishes heavenward to Mount Olympus. These cakes were made from flour, nuts, leavened yeast, and honey; the cakes presented to Artemis would have been quite different from the cakes we know and love today.
The first actual birthday cakes, as we would recognize them, are believed to have originated in Germany during the Middle Ages. In the 15th century, bakeries started marketing sweet cakes specifically for children’s birthday parties, known as “Kinderfest.” These cakes were simple, bread-like creations, intended for the wealthy. Over time, birthday cakes became more elaborate. The availability of sugar
increased, making cakes sweeter and more decadent. The Industrial Revolution made baking tools and ingredients more accessible, leading to the mass production of cakes and making them affordable for everyone.
And those candles? The tradition of placing them on cakes and making a wish before blowing them out is also believed to have originated in Germany, this time in the 18th century. One of the earliest records of candles being placed on a birthday cake is from 1748 when Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf threw himself a birthday party, complete with a cake that held a candle for each of his years. 2 By the mid-1800s, the use of candles on a birthday cake was a well-documented phenomenon throughout Germany and the rest of Europe.
By this time, industrialization and globalization were changing the way birthdays were celebrated here in the United States. In fact, celebrating birthdays is a relatively new phenomenon in America, with the tradition only taking hold in the early 20th century.3 This development coincided with several societal shifts. As families had fewer children, each child became more valued emotionally, rather than for their labor. This increased focus on individual children contributed to the rise of birthday celebrations. The rise of factories and structured schedules emphasized the
“Celebrating birthdays is a relatively new phenomenon in America.”
importance of time, linking it to the observance of birthdays. These factors combined to make birthday celebrations a significant tradition in American culture. 4
Today, birthday cakes are a blank canvas for creativity. From simple sponge cakes to gravity-defying creations, they reflect individual tastes and cultural influences. They’re a centerpiece of birthday parties, a symbol of joy, and a delicious way to mark another trip around the sun. Whether you’re a fan of classic vanilla or prefer a more adventurous flavor, the birthday cake remains a cherished tradition, a sweet reminder that life is worth celebrating.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x9 pan. Cream together the butter and sugar. One at a time, beat in the eggs, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour and baking powder and add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth. Transfer the batter to the pan and bake for 30 minutes. When the cake is done, it should spring to the touch and, when poked with a toothpick, it should come out clean.
