Arch Contact: finn.orstrup@kadk.dk AUTARKI is a 1:1 experiment with cross-laminated wood panels (gluelam) where improvement of contemporary construction methods for the material is investigated. Building with gluelam is a relatively new construction method but the material holds notable potentials for use in low energy construction due to the simple construction process, very high isolations values, and fewer thermal bridges. With this project our objective is to develop and test a new construction method, which reduces the various types of materials, where the amount of used material is optimised and where climate technical potentials are better utilised. We will investigate the possibilities of creating a comfortable indoor climate without any external energy input, but with solar heating and natural ventilation. The erection of a 1:1 experiment, a small single space unit for temporary use, will furthermore give us the opportunity of looking at the optimisation of the process, in the planning phase as well as in the construction phase, and study the architectonical potentials of the material.

Research Project THE TECTONICS OF THE BRICK Thomas Bo Jensen, Associate Professor, Architect, PhD Contact: thomas.jensen@kadk.dk Due to a misfit between on the one hand today’s building techniques and norms and on the other hand the inherent nature and potentials of the brick and the brickwork, Danish brickwork is currently in a state of architectural crisis. The thesis of the project is that today’s and a future strong need for a sustainable building practise, calls for a rethinking of today’s brickwork practise.

Through drawings and full scale mock-up experiments, the project aims at pointing out possible technical solutions and methods, that can reactivate forgotten qualities of brickwork like thermal mass, transportation of humidity, and dynamic expression of the façade while engaging today’s demands.

The project is a part of the research project “Toward a Tectonic Sustainable Building Practice” and is furthermore carried out in collaboration with architect PhD Mette Jerl Jensen whose dissertation ‘revitalization of the masonry wall’, completed in CINARK, deals with the same problem area.

The project will be finished by spring 2013 and will be supplemented with ideation and development through involvement of students through courses.

Research collaboration ADAPTABLE FUTURES Kasper Sánchez Vibæk, Associate Professor, Architect, PhD., BA in Sociology Contact: kasper.vibaek@kadk.dk For several years a research group at Loughborough University, UK, has worked with the research project ‘Adaptable Futures’. The project investigates how buildings can be designed in order to accommodate change over time. This adaptability is broadly defines through concepts like: adjustable, versatile, refitable, convertible, scalable, and/or movable.

The project has lead to the development of a so-called toolkit with a range of different methodological and assessment tools that can be used separately or together in order to better understand and pro-actively improve the adaptability of new buildings over time even before they are put into their first use.

CINARK participates in a phase of the project where the toolbox content is tested and challenged through a practical application in the work processes and specific projects of a range of architectural offices and contractors.

CINARK contributes to the qualification of some of the tools in relation to own theoretical models and tools.

Industrial PhD ARCHITECTURAL POTENTIALS FOR FABRIC FORMWORK Anne-Mette Manelius, Industrial PhD Student, M. Arch.

Contact: anne-mette.manelius@kadk.dk Woven textiles can be used as a flexible, strong, lightweight and affordable alternative to conventional methods of casting concrete.

The method shows great perspectives regarding design and production of concrete structures.

The aim of the programme is to develop new fabric formwork technologies and methods as an alternative to conventional concrete formwork.

The research question goes: When combining advanced technologies within textiles and concrete in an industrialised, buildable context, how can architectural perspectives regarding structure, form and surface be met?

Several perspectives have not yet been investigated fully – this in regard to architectural form, tactility, optimisation of materials used, production methods and possible connection to existing practice and form systems etc.

PhD Project SUSTAINABLE INTEGRATED PRODUCT DELIVERIES IN RENOVATION AND NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Jan Schipull, PhD Student, Dipl.-Ing. Arch.

Contact: jan.kauschen@kadk.dk Architects and the building industry both face great challenges in the near future: new laws require buildings with greater energy-efficiency and higher conservation of resources. Specifically, sustainable renovation projects have potential for reducing the energy consumption of the existing building-mass.

The aim is to investigate possibilities to use sustainable integrated product deliveries in renovation projects. Projects at various scales will inform the research in order to evaluate the implementation of integrated product deliveries, and how they may be qualified as “sustainable”. In that respect an in-depth look of the term “architectural sustainability” will be of specific interest.

The project will also question whether specific architectural concepts or building types have proven more flexible than others in tolerating or encouraging renovation? How effectively and to what extent may integrated product deliveries be used in a given project? How can future buildings be designed, built, and managed to allow less complicated, more efficient and especially more sustainable future renovation projects?

The PhDproject is carried-out in close collaboration with JJW arkitekter and the research network SYSBYG.

Industrial PhD Project ARCHITECTONIC POSSIBILITIES IN ROBOT FABRICATED FORMWORK FOR CONCRETE BUILDING Johannes Portielje Rauff Greisen, Industrial PhD Student, M. Arch Contact: jrg@teknologisk.dk The scope is that the form potentials of self-compacting concrete are not being fully utilized today and there is a gap between the architect’s visions and the contemporary fabrication techniques.

The hypotheses are that robot fabricated formwork will: Present new architectonic possibilities by release of hitherto unseen aesthetic and functional form potentials for self-compacting concrete, produce unique concrete building more sustainable than traditional building industry and reduce the gap between the architectural vision and the realized building.

The goal is making the industrial robot feasible for concrete building, including neo-industrial fabrication of both formwork for concrete elements and for in-situ casting. Formwork for individually shaped, visible concrete surfaces with varying relief and complex geometry will be explored. Throughout experiments and development of a catalogue-of-terms, the architectural relevance of the industrial robot in connection to concrete is assessed.

Industrial PhD project TECTONICS OF ADAPTABILITY Søren Nielsen, Industrial PhD Student, M. Arch., MD Contact: soren.nielsen@kadk.dk Longevity of buildings and components are dependent on their ability to adapt to future change in functional needs. Thus, adaptability constitutes a significant instrument in a resource saving building practise. This industrial PhD study investigates how designing for adaptability generates specific architectural motifs. Adaptable design includes spatial strategies aiming at versatility and convertibility, and technical strategies to ensure adjustability and deconstruction without damaging of components. By implementing theoretical guidelines in practical building schemes based on industrial principles along with traditional case-studies, the resulting architectural potential is mapped in a systematic way. The research aim is to provide a platform for architectural utilization of adaptability strategies related to volume composition as well as to assembly details. The latter actualizes in particular the notion of tectonics – architectural expression through construction.

Contact: katrine.lotz@kadk.dk The two part mandatory course introduces to central notions on the logistics, planning and production of architecture through lectures and exercises.

The first part of the course is general whereas the second part is arranged as specific electives covering different areas of specialisation (e.g. light, structures, processes, BIM and sustainability) through which the general learning goals of the course are addressed.

Course elements are: a) knowledge of conditions for construction i.e. parties/organization and contracting/project structure/legislation, b) methods and theoretical tools for case study and technology analysis, c) different strategic approaches for innovative design, and d) the concept of BIM and the digital models’ implications for cooperation/logistics/information exchange in construction.

The course should enhance the students’ ability to identify the context and the processes, in which an architectural project is produced and should potentially enhance the consistency between result and the underlying vision of the design and use.

Research Cluster ARCHITECTURE: PRACTICE, METHOD AND MANAGEMENT Katrine Lotz, Associate Professor, Architect, PhD Contact: katrine.lotz@kadk.dk The cluster aims at contributing to the continuation and furthering of the close relationship between the architectural profession and its educational institutions. The cluster has participation from all of the school’s four research institutes and three study-departments, and it includes both researchers and practising architects.

Cluster participants and the cluster’s reference-group will identify current and relevant issues within its field. Examples might include ‘New players in construction’, ‘The architect as a leader in construction’, ‘The architect as process facilitator’, ‘The phase-division’, ‘New forms of Architectural Competition’, ‘New methods and forms of cooperation as a result of BIM’ The problems are processed and formulated so that they can be pursued through a subsequent research at KA. A number of international researchers who holds experience in the use of ethnographic-based field studies in combination with action research in relation to research into the architectural professional practice will participate in the cluster’s work in order to clarify the possible and relevant research designs.

In addition, the cluster contributes to KA being more active and visible in the continuing discussions of the practice of the architectural profession and the central processes that they are enacted in. The cluster should seek external funding to continue its work after 2012.

Through five PhD-projects the collaboration furthermore directly includes specific industrial partners (co-financed and industrial PhDs) The purpose of the network is to develop and disseminate new knowledge about neo-industrialised architecture and construction in Denmark through focus on the development of integrated product deliveries. The intention is to involve and test the newest technology regarding its capacity to support design, sustainability, and new forms of production and organisation – both concerning architecture, production and business models.

The network approaches integrated product deliveries in a broad sense including the development of theories, methods, and specific projects or pro ducts from subsystems over spatial systems to entire building systems. This happens both on a conceptual level and on a specific development level. The purpose is carried out in close collaboration between the involved parties in order to take advantage of the synergy arising from the different professional backgrounds thus drawing a broad professional world view.
