Ladies Of Chrome On Location! 34-2 COMBAT MOTORCYCLEVETERANSASSOCIATION

The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) chapter 34-2 held their 5th Annual Veteran Benefit Ride on Saturday July 30. The starting and ending spot was the large parking lot between “Quaker Steak and Lube” and Greenville H-D. Registration was from 9:30AM to 10:30AM. The cost to go on the ride was $20.00. The route was well planned with five stops along the way. Riding time was a little over two hours. The list of the stops also had a map on it. The route was a large circle. The first stop was Mojo’s Famous Burgers in Traveler’s Rest, SC; the second stop was the Sunoco Gas Station in Cleveland, SC; the third stop was the Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Pickens, SC; the fourth stop was the Silos Brewing Company in Easley, SC; the fifth stop was the Thomas Creek Brewery in Greenville, SC; then all came back to the starting place for auctions, door prizes, food, and a whole lot more!

I decided to go because I’ve met quite a few members of the CVMA before. They are very friendly, and dedicated to helping fellow veterans. I looked at their Facebook page to see all the great stuff they are doing for upstate South Carolina veterans. I wanted to participate, and make a donation. I left home at 8:30AM on Saturday. It was cool and comfortable but would get warm in the afternoon –high in the 90’s. I rode some beautiful back roads to I85, and then headed south. After a few miles, I exited at Pelham Road, and turned left. I then turned right at the stoplight for Garlington Road which goes through some exclusive neighborhoods before the turnoff to the Harley dealership on the right.

When I arrived at the parking lot, I was surprised to see so many motorcycles. It was 9:30AM, and registration just started. After I parked “Miss Vickie”, I took a stack of magazines to the registration table, and gave my donation. I was warmly greeted by “Magic Man” – an Air Force veteran. We talked for a few minutes but then he got busy so I started to walk around. I noticed that some of the bikers were leaving early. This was not a large group ride but more of small groups coming and going. I watched as a young lady rode in on her Indian Scout. I talked with her after she stopped. Her name was “Chesty”, and she was from Charleston, SC. She rode in the night before to go on the run. She was a US Marine veteran who served in a combat area so she was a Full Member of the CVMA. I walked around some more, and talked with many other CVMA members. All were very friendly. A few asked me if I wanted to be a CMVA Support Member since I couldn’t be a CVMA Full Member. There are three types of CVMA Members: the Full Member who was in combat, the Support Member who helps the members with their veteran work, and an Associate Member who is married to a Full or Support Member. Check their website for all the membership requirements. I noticed that the Ladies from Carolina Chrome had a tent set up. They were giving away magazines, and asking people to sign Christmas cards for veterans. I talked with Deb for a while, and she introduced me to another Chrome Girl named Deb. I took a picture of the “Double Debs”. People were leaving to go on the run. I watched as they left, and then left myself - heading home. After I got home, I took Cindy out for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning with some real American heroes.

Jonathan Faulkes, a member of the Keepers of the Fallen, said that even though he didn’t know them. It’s important to be there for the community in times of need.

"When you lose somebody, is when the community comes together and helps each other, it makes things a little easier on everybody and we just want to help," Faulkes said.

Members of the motorcycle club, Keepers of the Fallen, strapped on their helmets and revved up their engines in honor of Gregg and Weaver.

Florence Co. Paramedic And Motorcyclist

Many of these bikers come from different walks of life but what brings them together is their love of the ride.

It’s been more than a week since a car wreck in Florence took the lives of motorcyclist Cedric Gregg and paramedic Sara Weaver. Saturday, August 20th, a motorcycle club honored Gregg and Weaver by riding from the Bass Pro Shops in North Myrtle Beach to Black Jack Harley Davidson in Florence.

Over two dozen bikers gathered for this ride. Many of them didn’t know Sara or Cedric personally, but they were so impacted by their stories, that they wanted to keep their legacy alive in the best way they knew- to ride.

And this family has done a lot for other families, especially ones of first responders, motorcyclists, and "Onceveterans.youaccomplish something and you raise money for somebody and you present them with the check, it’s a really good feeling. It makes you feel good inside and you’re doing something good for somebody," Faulkes said.

People paid $20 to participate and all the money raised will be split and donated to Weaver's and Gregg’s families.

"A lot of the members of the keepers of the fallen I did not know before I joined and now I consider them my family," said Travis Wright, a member of the Keepers of the Fallen.

I was talking with a good brother recently about how Harley Davidson went back to a simple cable clutch on their newer bikes and abandoned the long used hydraulic clutch system. Some folks love the plain cable clutch while others miss the ease of pulling back on the hydraulic model. While there is all kinds of speculation on why Harley made this change, I am willing to bet it came down to which one was least expensive. That conversation opened up a fairly long discussion on how complicated newer motorcycles are to operate as opposed to the older, simpler bikes we all grew up riding.

A choice to make salvation simple… What an amazing God we serve!

Simple By Choice… What a great idea!

Bikes today have everything from onboard navigation to Bluetooth sound systems to traction control. If you find yourself in a traffic jam, your motorcycle may be equipped with the ability to turn off one of the cylinders which helps keep the engine cool. That annoying flashing light on the instrument panel may indicate you have low tire pressure, and you need to have it checked. Anti-Lock brakes work to keep the motorcycle from going into a slide if a text happy driver happens to pull out in front of you. With the click of a button, a rider can view all sorts of information on how the bike is performing at any certain time. All these things work together to make motorcycling more convenient and worry free, while keeping us safe and our machines in good working order. Some of those modern conveniences, however, can cause us a great deal of problems. In 2018, six of us on Harley Davidson motorcycles left for a week and half ride to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Three of those motorcycles had the new water-cooled engines and none were more than a year old. On day two, the first water pump went out, on day three, the second water pump went out, and on day five, the third water pump went out. All three water cooled motorcycles required replacement water pumps on that one ride. We spent four days of our vacation sitting in Harley dealers waiting on bikes to be repaired at $800 to $1000 each. One of the dealers we visited informed me that those pumps are fine if all you do is ride around town, but I you take a long trip and ride it hard all day, there is a high probability it will fail. Talk about angry! I have since read the 2019 and newer bikes have better water pumps, but I will still not purchase a Harley Davidson that is equipped with water-cooled heads. So, while technology is a wonderful thing, sometimes a simple, no-frills, plain ‘ol motorcycle can be a blessing. No water pump to worry about, no annoying red or yellow lights flashing in your face, and no need for a 400-page book to help figure out the ungodly GPS or sound system. It could be that simplicity may not be such a bad thing after all.

God also chooses to make things simple. In Old Testament times, there were 613 laws given by Moses to the 12 tribes who were wandering in the desert. If laws were broken, the people were then required to make daily sacrifices as restitution for their sinful behavior. Attempting to obey so many laws and offering that many sacrifices was not an easy task. God knew the people would never be able to keep up with all those requirements, and a simpler plan was already in the works.

Titus 3:4-7 NIV But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Because He loved us, and in order make it easier, what did God do? He sent his only son as a one-time sacrifice of atonement that would cover the sin debt for everyone who would choose to follow him. No requirements, no work on our part, just a free gift for the taking. All you have to do is reach out to him, make a commitment, and He will change your life.

There is a slogan used by the Airheads Beemers Club that I love. Most of these people choose to ride older air-cooled, easy to maintain, no frills BMW boxer motorcycles, and their national slogan is “Simple By Choice”.

Ralph Hamlin may have been selling motorcycles in Los Angeles, but he was also competing in races. It was 1901. Ralph competed in a 10-mile event. He was up against three other challengers. Ralph won on his Orient-Aster.

Lane splitting or filtering shouldn’t be confused with reckless riding. Weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds isn’t allowed in any fashion anywhere in the United States.

Each year, the number of states that consider some form of lane splitting / filtering legislation increases. With the relatively recent passage of laws in Utah, Montana, and, most recently, Arizona, that trend is likely to continue at an accelerated rate. It is expected that motorcycle rights organizations in more than half a dozen states will introduce some type of lane splitting/filtering bill in the upcoming year.

The benefits described above are among the reasons why we will continue to see lane splitting/filtering legislation introduced in states throughout the country. As more states realize the benefits of such legislation, the practice will become more accepted, just as it is throughout Europe and most of the rest of the world. So keep an eye out. It may be coming to your state next.

August 19, 2022

Generally, lane splitting is riding a motorcycle between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane. Lane filtering is often described as allowing motorcy clists to trickle down between or around rows of stopped/ slow-moving vehicles, usually at stop lights, in order to allow the rider to navigate towards the front of the line, which allows them to take off safely without being rear ended. Both practices allow motorcyclists to take advantage of the slimmer profile of motorcycles in order to ma neuver them more effectively through traffic.

Laws being passed in the United States are generally a hybrid of these two practices. For instance, both Utah and Arizona allow motorcycles traveling on a roadway with two or more lanes in the same direction to pass stopped traf fic in the same lane so long as the speed limit of the road is not greater than 45 miles per hour, and the motorcycle travels at a speed of 15 miles per hour or less. In Montana, motorcyclists may pass other vehicles in the same lane of travel that are stopped or traveling at a speed of 10 miles an hour or less, so long as the overtaking motorcycle is not operated at a speed in excess of 20 miles an hour.

As usual, if you have any questions or comments concerning this or any other matters concerning laws affecting motorcycling, please feel free to reach out to me.

States that have allowed the practice of splitting/filtering have found the practice to be beneficial. The California Highconditions such as those in the states mentioned above.

Let’s address the obvious question. What is lane split ting and lane filtering, and what is the difference? Ask that question a dozen times and you are likely to get a dozen different answers.

Matt Danielson is a partner at Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, a personal injury law firm whose attorneys all ride motor cycles and practice in VA, NC, SC, GA and WV. Matt has success fully represented clients in cases from simple property damage to complex multi-million dollar personal injury claims. He is also a lobbyist, lecturer, and works with motorcycle rights organizations throughout the country. To learn more about the Motorcycle Law Group, visit MotorcycleLawGroup.com.

Splitting Filtering Legislation

Even though lane splitting /filtering is widely practiced throughout much of the world, many in the United States have looked at it as a crazy idea that would remain forever confined to California. This has now proven not to be the case.

A 2012 Belgian study found that if just 10 percent of drivers were to switch to motorcycles and filter through traffic, travel times would decrease for the remaining car drivers by some eight minutes per journey. This benefit would not exist if motorcyclists ignored the inherent ad vantages of their smaller, narrower vehicles and sat in line like cars. The same study found considerable environmental benefits to lane splitting—not because bikes emit less carbon (many larger bikes are as bad as cars), but because every bike that lane splits actively reduces the amount of time every other vehicle on the road spends sitting in traffic jams.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) endorses lane splitting, citing the long-term success in California, and a study by University of California Berkeley researchers showing that the practice enhances motorcycle safety by reducing rear end collisions which can often be catastrophic for motorcyclists.
