LIFT

The columns that support I-5 form a grandiose entry to the Shallows, inspiring awe and wonder in visitors. The Gods set the mindset of users, placing them in a humble mindset in a sacred space.

PIVOT

Fabricator Plaza is the hub of the activity in the Shallows, oofering seating to OMSI children and locals RQOXQFKEUHDNRYHUćRZSDUNLQJIRU events, food vendors and restrooms.

HOVER

Poised gracefully over the Willamette River, Sweetwater Springs delicately extends as a token to the local swimming community, keeping them safe and giving rowers space to move their boats.

4 SWELL

Like the crest of a majestic wave, Sculler’s Grandstand lifts watersport spectators abover the shore vegetation to see the action. Sweeping vistas of the Portland skyline are of course a package deal.

FLOW

The movement scheme through the VSDFHXWLOL]HVćXLGG\QDPLF typologies to guide people from one space to another, within and through the site, providing mutual connectivity with its context.

F I LT E R

Capitalizing on existing infrastructure, the existing rain garden and native riparian planting are connected using small culverts underneath sidewalks, delivering clean water all the way to the river.

I have always had an inordinate passion for landscapes. I have spent a lot of my life trying to save them. I hoped to build in them far more often that [sic] I have—especially some of the wild and wonderful ones. I suppose my attitude towards building in landscapes was, and is, that of a landscape painter imagining what would look good in his landscape painting.

The regional architecture in my mind in other countries is often the humble architecture of the place. Like Mexico has the villages that are almost the color of the landscape they exist in and melt into it and change from valley to valley, and the same in Europe. -JOHN YEON
