541 Trimble is located in North San Jose. During construction of a previous phase, it became clear that a former amenity space could not be installed due to parking stall size and location requirements. The new location included backfilling a loading dock and removing an old storage building to make space for a walled courtyard with overhead structure, bar-height countertop, informal seating areas, and fire egress.

The overhead structure is complemented by tan fabric sails and a porcelain tile deck, creating the experience of an outdoor room. Below Right. An additional fire egress uses decomposed granite to avoid confusion with the primary path, and offsets stormwater mitigation requirements. Site lighting is provided by modern bollards throughout the project.

255 Shoreline is an office park located adjacent to Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City. The project involved renovating and enhancing accessibility to an existing amenity space with a new overhead structure, wood feature wall, formal and informal seating areas, and lighting. The project incorporated existing concrete walls and upgraded the irrigation system to recycled water.

The pixelated appearance of the feature low fence required special attention to post placement and electrical conduits for concealed internal lighting. Below Right. Sheltered views out to the lagoon integrate with the natural materials and harmonious colors of the design.

Clocktower Square is located in Palo Alto with an existing network of fountains and pools. The project’s main goals were to create new amenity spaces for office employees to gather, enhance accessibility on deteriorated concrete around the office park, and preserve existing redwood trees. Key features include two custom bridges, furnished patios, site lighting, and an overhead structure designed by the architect.

1960 Hartog is an office building located off of Highway 101 in North San Jose, adjacent to Coyote Creek. A local plumbing company purchased the property with the intent of subdividing the building into a new space for their operations and leasing out the adjacent unit with a new enclosed amenity space. As the building was initially intended for only one accessible entrance, accessibility to the new unit required backfilling a loading dock, new walkways and staircases, all while avoiding the large existing trees on site. Native planting and non-invasive ornamentals were used exclusively due to the proximity of the project to the creek.

Above Left. Stepped concrete walls, slatted wood paneling, and charcoal gray vertical posts create a unique blend of natural and industrial textures while also adjusting to the varied topography. Above Right. Sketchup models were created to help visualize the project, as well as provide ownership with marketing images prior to construction completion. Below. A quick sketch provides a snapshot into the brainstorming process for the shared amenity space. The tall portion of the fence blocks views to adjacent parking and the road, while the lower portions on the sides create a sense of openness with lateral views across the front of the ECTIVE FROM BUILDING landscape. Low concrete walls provide a sense of stability and security, and allow for integrated lighting fixtures.

The central promenade serves as fire lane access, while also incorporating SUBMITTAL 1 seating, accent paving, sculptures, and planting to provide a gathering space for residents of both buildings. Each client wanted to replace their garden with flowering native perennials and natural materials to save water and provide habitat for local wildlife. Each project balanced unique maintenance, irrigation, color, and seasonality preferences which were incorporated for during the design process. Images show the landscapes less than one year after installation, and are expected to reach design maturity in 3-5 years.
