A urban analysis of Balestier Road in terms of its programmatic function, circulation with a particular emphasis on the public bus routes and its connectivity to the key attraction sites

OVERVIEW A final analysis was conducted to explore the relation between illegality and obstruction, both human and vehicular, in Balestier Road. The deterministic notion of illegality is quickly questioned when legal structures end up obstructing and encouraging illegal acts. It reveals the several grey zones and the intricate yet dynamic correlation that exist between the two themes that enriches the state of Balestier as a place in constant state of flux amidst the uncertainty and hybridity that exists.

OVERVIEW Balestier Road feels like a labyrinth that goes on and on with its confusingly monotonous building landscape. Walking down the street feels so claustrophobic as we struggle to breathe in this urban maze that at times feel like a tsunami that may engulf us anytime.

OVERVIEW Balestier Road lacks stairs and circulation. Traversing its road is a dangerous activity as vehicles unpredictably halt, swerve and turn. In an ideal world, can we create an accessible and green Balestier where the pedestrians are free from the rogue of these vehicles as they bask in the warmth of the natural vegetations that accompanies

OVERVIEW Balestier Road lacks connection and circulation. At times, it is just a confusing labyrinth that never seems to end. In an ideal world, can Balestier be a place of stairs, to connect us to our venues, where small alleys become opportunities and gateways to our destinations. And where the staircase arrests the confusion but preserve and strengthen the beautiful confusion that already exists?

OVERVIEW Situated just a cornerstone away from the Central Expressway, this 19th century Hokkien temple, adorned with its swallow-tipped ornaments and glass shards decorations, houses the Chinese Earth deity who is said to offer protection to all the Chinese immigrants who left their homeland afar to forge a brave new life in this foreign land.

OVERVIEW Far from its heyday as a popular place of worship, the temple has gone through years of transformation, adapting, influencing and being influenced by the evolution of Balestier Road.

OVERVIEW Today, the temple shares its compound with a popular durian store, well-loved by its loyal patrons. Straddled in a cosy corner behind the theatre house that was once a nexus of community interaction, it reflects the symbiotic spatial relation and thus dynamic circulation that exists between the religious and the secular, a microcosm of the several other hybrid spaces seen all across Balestier

OVERVIEW Despite the modernity that permeates about this site, the few special religious occasions could still see the return of the temple’s faithful followers. And just like they have conducted for many years, the same temple prayer ritual will be routinised on these dear moments. The followers, almost akin to the missing key to this artefact, that complements the preservation of its very existence.
