ach den Serien „Nebel“(2009) und „Äquator“(2010) setzt sich von Kaufmann in seinem „Ozean“-Zyklus nun mit dem Motiv des Meeres als Projektionsfläche für Träume, Wünsche, Stimmungen und emotionale Zustände auseinander.

In fünf großformatigen Leinwänden in überwiegend blauem und violettem Kolorit sowie in einer raumfüllenden Installation nähert sich Kaufmann dem Thema aus malerischer, skulpturaler aber auch literarischer Perspektive an.

Die kompositorisch auf das Wesentliche reduzierten Bilder sind im technischen Aufbau außerordentlich komplex: Kaufmann modelliert in dicken Farbschichten die materiellen Eigenschaften des Meeres nach, lässt es pastos bleiern, dann schrundig und hart wirken, peitscht es auf oder lässt Wellen sich brechen.

Although minimal in composition, his paintings are extraordinarily complex due to their technical structure: Kaufmann molds thick layers of paint to the physical characteristics of the sea. They appear sometimes leaden, other times wild and hard, he whips the up canvases and breaks the waves.

„My Name is Ishmael“ verweist auf Hermann Melvilles „Moby Dick“: In einem von Wasser überfluteten Wohnraum jagt ein mit Axt bewaffneter trauriger Held den Ungeheuern unter der Wasseroberfläche nach, während im Nebenzimmer beschaulich ein eingedeckter Tisch wartet. Wie der mythologische Sisyphos kämpft sich der wagemutige Ruderer in „Die Welle“ unerschrocken einen monumentalen Wellenberg hoch, um sich und seine Zimmerpflanze zum sicheren Ufer zu bringen.

Referring to Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”, the painting titled “My Name is Ishmael” depicts an anti-hero figure that is armed with an ax to chase monsters under the water surface of a flooded living room interior. In „The Wave“ a daring rower, a contemporary Sisyphus, battles a monumental wave crest to bring himself and his house plant for safer shores.

In einer ausufernden Rauminstallation inszeniert Kaufmann ein mechanisches Theater. Zwischen in Wellenform gebogenen und in hartem schwarz-weiss Kontrast bemalten Holzpaneelen werden Zustände des Meeres als dramatische, sirenenartige, betörende, hektische, oder rythmisch-tosende Lichtreflektionen und Schattenspiele in den Ausstellungsraum geworfen. Kaufmann schwemmt in seinem „Ozean“-Zyklus die Abenteuerlust, Sehnsüchte und Ängste seiner Protagonisten und des menschlichen Daseins an die Oberfläche.

Ruprecht von Kaufmann, geboren 1974 in München, hat am Art Center College Los Angeles studiert und lebt nach langjährigem Aufenthalt in Los Angeles und New York seit 2003 in Berlin.

Seine Arbeiten waren in zahlreichen Ausstellungen vertreten, so unter anderem bei Fraktale IV im Palast der Republik, Berlin (2005), in der Kunsthalle Mannheim (2006) und in der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Berlin (2007). Zum Wintersemester 2012/2013 ist er zum Professor für Zeichnung und Malerei an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig berufen worden.

fter the ‘Fog’ (2009) and ‘Equator’ (2010) series, Kaufmann’s ‘Ocean’ cycle now deals with the image of the sea as an object of projection for dreams, desires, moods and emotional states. He approaches the topic from a pictorial, sculptural and literary perspective in a room-sized installation comprised of five large-scale canvases using predominantly blue and violet color.

A large room installation of painted and curved wooden panels accommodates a mechanical theater. Mobiles and various light sources cast reflections and shadows into the gallery and onto Kaufmann’s portraits of dramatic, siren-like, haunting, frantic, or rhythmically-roaring waveforms and states of the sea in stark black-white contrast.Kaufmann floats all the adventure, desires and fears of his protagonists and of human condition to the surface of his “Ocean” works Ruprecht von Kaufmann was born 1974 in Munich. He studied painting at the Art Center College in Los Angeles. He lived in Los Angeles and New York for several years, moved to Berlin in 2003, where he currently lives and works.

His works have been exhibited at numerous venues including the Fraktale IV exhibition at Palast der Republik, Berlin (2005), Kunsthalle Mannheim (2006) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Berlin (2007).Since October 2012, he is a professor at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts.

Neue Arbeiten von Ruprecht von Kaufmann bei Christian Ehrentraut in Berlin 10. Dezember 2010 Die Galerie Christian Ehrentraut in Berlin präsentiert mit „Äquator“ noch bis zum 18. Dezember eine Einzelausstellung des Malers Ruprecht von Kaufmann. Die Ausstellung knüpft an installative Arbeiten aus den vorangegangenen Jahren an.

Ruprecht von Kaufmann, geboren 1974 in München, ist anfangs relativ einfach in die neue deutsche figurative Malerei einzuordnen, die vor allem Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts einen Aufschwung erlebt. Studiert und gelebt hat von Kaufmann gleichwohl in Los Angeles und New York bevor er nach Berlin zog. Auch in seinen Arbeiten finden sich neben Figuren und Tieren weitere alltägliche, gegenständliche Motive, die sich, ähnlich wie bei Künstlern dieser Richtung, mit absurden Motiven vermischen. Jedoch erinnern die Werke ebenso an die Motive und Arbeitsweise vieler Street-Art-Künstler. Besonders die Palette von Schwarz- und Weiß-Tönen zeichnet die Arbeiten bei Ehrentraut aus und lässt nichtzuletzt die Assoziation mit besagter Street Art zu. Frühere Arbeiten sind durchaus in Farbe gehalten, allerdings bestand hier die Palette eher aus Pastelltönen, denn aus kräftigen Farben – sie erinnern nicht nur in der Farbwahl, sondern auch in ihrer Motivik an die Malerei der vorletzten Jahrhundertwende wodurch sie einen gewissen burgeoise-anmutenden Charme entwickeln.

Im Gegensatz dazu stehen nun diese neuen Werke. Von Kaufmann setzt hier eine Serie von Schwarz-Weiß-Arbeiten auf FilzUntergrund fort, die er seit 2007 entwickelt. Alle 9 Arbeiten sind auf diesem Bildträger, dessen Vorderseite zuvor mit weißer Farbe überzogen wurde, hergestellt. Das Besondere ist, dass die Filzbahnen nicht als bloßer Maluntergrund fungieren, sondern durch Einschnitte oder partielles Abtrennen des Filzes in den Raum hineinragen, indem das Bild nach außen gewölbt wird oder Bildteile angetrennt werden. Die Bahnen werden so vom rein zweidimensionalen Träger zur dreidimensionalen Rauminstallation.

Gleich im ersten Raum bricht das Gemälde auf: Die 250m hohe Filzbahn gibt im oberen Teil den Blick auf die Galeriewand dahinter frei, da ein quadratischer Ausschnitt des Filz’ nach oben lappt und an der Decke montiert ist. Somit ist die Bildmotivik durch dieses „weiße Loch“ unterbrochen. Was sieht man nun? Schon hier kann man dies schwerlich beschreiben, da das Dargestellte keiner klaren Struktur folgt. Der untere rechte Teil des Filzes ist beinahe flächig schwarz bemalt, eine Art Baumstumpf ragt daraus hervor, weiße kreisförmige Gebilde entspringen diesem dunklen Grund und laufen nach oben als dünne schwarze Streifen weiter. Sie lösen sich als Baumäste in der Bildmitte auf. Daneben erkennt man ein paar vereinzelte Vögel, darüber die weiße Lücke. Auch auf dem hochgeklappten Filzstück sieht man eine schwarze Vogelschar, hier nun allerdings stark verdichtet.

Tiere sind ein beliebtes Motiv des Künstlers, durchforstet man von Kaufmanns Werke, tauchen immer wieder Vögel, Panther, Wölfe oder auch Nashörner und Pferde auf. Jedoch sind sie selten zutraulich oder zahm dargestellt – eher wirken sie bedrohlich. So auch hier der dunkle Vogelschwarm, den man eher mit dem in Hitchcocks bekanntem Meisterwerk assoziiert, als mit einem, sagen wir, fröhlich zwitschernden Spatzenhaufen.

Auch im nächsten Raum spielen Tiere eine Rolle. Hier sagt schon der programmatische Titel „Der Tag an dem der Osterhase erschossen wurde“ zumindest etwas über die Tierart aus: Auf den Leitungen eines Strommastes im linken Bildfeld sitzen in der Tat zwei Feldhasen, darunter steht ein Mann dessen Gesichtszüge einer Clownsmaske ähneln, mit zwei Pistolen in der Hand mit denen er auf die Hasen zielt. Rechts daneben ist der schwarz gezeichnete Giebel eines Hauses. Auf dem Dach sitzt ein Kind, Kopf und Haare ganz in schwarzer Farbe gehalten, in dessen Kopföffnungen die Stromleitungen hineinlaufen. Darunter im Haus liegt ein Mann ausgestreckt auf einer Couch. Dieser Teil des Bildes hängt, nur noch durch eine schmale Filzbahn mit dem Rest verbunden, lose herab.

Weder im Hausinneren, noch im Außenraum sind weitere Gegenstände erkennbar, Farbe ist stellenweise verwischt, so dass sich graue Schatten ergeben und Linien verschwimmen. Haus- und Außenszene stehen in keinem eindeutigen Bezug zueinander. Die Absurdität der linken Szene wird von der ruhigen, isolierten im rechten Teil kontrastiert. Wie das Kind auf das Dach, geschweigedenn die Stromleitungen in seinen Kopf kommen, bleibt ungeklärt.

Es fällt auf, dass der Titel auch der eines Märchens sein könnte – dennoch bleiben die Zusammenhänge rein assoziativer Art, ein Erzählzusammenhang ergibt sich nur aus dem eigenen Zusammen- und Weiterdenken.

Folgt man dieser Vorgabe, so findet man auch in den weiteren Arbeiten Bildmotive, die bloß rein assoziativ zusammengedacht werden können, bildinhaltlich jedoch keine Berührungspunkte haben. So begegnet einem in der Arbeit „Zwischenraum“ die clownhafte Gestalt wieder, diesmal mit einer Flinte bewaffnet, während ein Mann in Badelatschen und kurzer Hose vor einem laufenden Fernseher auf dem Sofa eingeschlafen ist. Im hinteren Galerieraum driftet ein Kanu im oberen Bildteil über eine Schneelandschaft in einem gespenstisch kahlen Wald hinweg. Auch hier verhilft die Filzbahn durch eine Wölbung nach Außen zu dem Effekt, dass man meint, das Kanu würde aus dem Bild heraus steuern, ähnlich der Vögel im ersten Raum.

Eine große Qualität der Arbeiten Ruprecht von Kaufmanns ist es, Ideen, Gefühle und Assoziationen durch seine Bildmotivik anzustoßen. Alle bei Ehrentraut gezeigten Arbeiten sind gekennzeichnet durch eine sehr kühle, distanzierte, ja, auch reduzierte Ästhetik, theaterhaft werden einzelne Szenen ausgeleuchtet. Personen sind immer isoliert gezeigt – es gibt keinerlei Interaktion untereinander, auch Gegenstände stehen, schweben quasi vereinzelt im Raum. Die Schwarz-Weiß-Palette verstärkt diesen irritierenden Eindruck der Vereinsamung und Trostlosigkeit, der gleichzeitig bedrohlich erscheint. Die fragmenthaft zusammengesetzten Szenen erinnern an Traumversatzstücke, die ohne Beginn oder Ende aufleuchten, einem heimsuchen, aber keine Erklärung liefern. Dabei webt er nicht nur durch verstörende Elemente wie Hasen auf Strommasten oder die Transformation eines Waldes auf den scheinbaren Grund eines Gewässers, sondern auch durch Farbgebung, Verwischungen von Farbe und Motiven und scheinbar unvollendete Bildpartien (Alp-)traumhafte Zusammenhänge, die ihren direkten Ausdruck erst durch das Bild selbst erlangen.

DIE BESTEN GALERIEAUSSTELLUNGEN IN BERLIN Berlin zählt inzwischen 450 Galerien. Da ist Überblick gefragt. Der Reiz eines Rundgangs besteht in der Mischung aus Marktführern und neuen hoffnungsvollen Unternehmen, die Profil beweisen. Ein Überblick. von Christian Herchenröder BERLIN. Die Berliner Galerieszene bleibt in Bewegung. Ein kontinuierliches Kommen und Gehen ist bei den auf die Megazahl 450 angewachsenen Galerien der Hauptstadt ganz normal. So ziehen sich immer wieder kurzlebige Hobbyunternehmen aus der von etwa dreißig Marktführern beherrschten Szene zurück und neue hoffnungsvolle Unternehmen treten auf den Plan, von denen auch nur wieder ein Teil bleibt. Diese Fluktuation beherrscht das Bild einer Kunststadt mit hartem Kern und weichen Rändern, einer Marktmetropole, in der sich die Migration der Galerien nach den Mietpreisen richtet.

Die jüngsten Abgänge Das Handtuch geworfen haben in diesem Herbst zwei renommierte Galerien: die Berliner Dependance von Haunch of Venison und die Galerie Klara Wallner, die erst im September 2009 an das Tempelhofer Ufer umgezogen war. Hier zeigt die Galerie Wentrup bis zum 22.12. drei neue Werkgruppen des dänisch-schweizerischen Künstlers Cristian Andersen, die zwischen Bild und skulpturaler Installation changieren. Vor allem die aus Fundstücken und Trashelementen komponierten Bronzeskulpturen haben eine das Heterogene verdichtende Präsenz (38.000, 45.000 Euro).

Lieblingsstandort Schönberg Die Meile zwischen Bülowstraße und Schöneberger Ufer entwickelt sich immer mehr zu einem noch bezahlbaren zentralen Galeriestandort. Esther Schipper zieht im neuen Jahr von der Linienstraße in Sichtweite der Neuen Nationalgalerie. Neben den Galerien, die sich bereits auf der Potsdamer Straße niedergelassen haben, werden weitere erwartet, die zum Teil mit dem alten Areal des Tagesspiegels liebäugeln.

Neuanfang bei Zero Ein Neuzugang in der Bülowstraße 90 ist seit einigen Monaten die Galerie Aanant & Zoo, die aus Mitte in eine 300 qm große Raumfolge umgezogen ist. Bis zum 29. Januar zeigt sie in diesem imposanten Altbau eine Gruppenausstellung mit Werken von sieben Künstlern aus Zagreb, die konzeptuell arbeiten und das Image der Negation und Verweigerung pflegen. Das Spektrum reicht von den in den 50-er Jahren entstandenen grauen "Negations de peinture" des Kunsthistorikers Mangelos bis zu einer 1993 entstandenen Serie von Mladen Stilinovic, in der die Subtraktion von Nullen auf weißem Grund das Bildprogramm prägt (40.000 Euro). Das absurde Zahlenspiel will nichts anderes sagen als: Wann ist die endgültige Zone Zero für einen Neuanfang erreicht?

Tödliche Ruhe Seit knapp zwei Jahren residiert Christian Ehrentraut, der 2005 in der Brunnenstraße startete, in der Friedrichstraße 123, wo er eine geräumige Hofgalerie bespielt. Ein neuer Werkzyklus von Ruprecht von Kaufmann konzentriert sich auf puristische Schwarz-Weiß-Malerei, deren Bildträger faltige, geschlitzte Filzbahnen sind. Ein starkes zeichnerisches Element, das sich schon präzise in den Vorstudien auf Papier auslebt, beherrscht auch die großformatigen Werke, die sich in mehrere Bildebenen aufteilen und mit ihren Filzbahnen, Faltungen und Schnittsegmenten in den Raum streben. Das ist virtuose Malerei, in der die Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste noch das Doppelbödige steigern. Das furioseste Bild der Ausstellung zeigt in der oberen, bis an die Decke reichenden Ebene eine Unterwasserszene in Untersicht. Die mündet in eine Waldszene, in der ein Tier zerlegt wird. Während im oberen Teil gestrampelt wird, strahlt die untere Partie eine tödliche Ruhe aus («Mittsommer», 180 x 500 cm, 22.400 Euro, bis 18. Dezember).

Fremde Freunde Drei lebensgroße Bronzen, meditativ im Raum verteilt, sind die Exponate der Stella Hamberg-Ausstellung bei Eigen + Art in der Augustraße.

Der Titel «Ghost light» spielt auf die tranceähnliche Aura dieser Figuren an, die zombiehaft entrückt wirken. Selbst die Bronze «Der Freund», die auf den ersten Blick so animalisch wirkt, hat eine fremdbestimmte Anmutung, die diese 1,87 Meter hohe Skulptur zu einem Standbild der Entpersönlichung macht (75 000 Euro; bis 18.12.).

Kritik an Deutungsmonopolen Schon vor ihrer viel beachteten Einzelausstellung im Württembergischen Kunstverein 2009 war die Berlinerin Peggy Buth eine multimediale Kraftfigur. Bis heute ist sie ihrem zentralen Thema treu geblieben: der Kritik an Herrschaftsstrukturen und Deutungsmonopolen in Politik, Kunst, Wissenschaften. Ihre jüngste Schau bei Klemm›s in der Brunnenstraße hinterfragt die Macht der Worte und des Wissens. Um die Arbeit «Listeners & Typewriters», die Hörsaalbänke mit altmodischen Schreibmaschinen besetzt, sind Werke gruppiert, die den Konflikt mit geschriebenem und gesprochenem Wort thematisieren. Subversive Befragung eines ganzen Vermittlungssystems, aber auch der eigenen Wahrnehmung verbindet die Exponate (1.800 - 18.000 Euro, bis 18.12.).

Vibrierende Farbkissen Zum 80. von Gotthard Graubner widmet die Galerie Wolfgang Werner dem Düsseldorfer Maler in ihren Berliner Räumen eine sparsam gehängte Geburtstagsschau, deren Werke der Künstler selbst ausgewählt und betont niedrig gehängt hat. Im Entree hängen kleinere Formate in Purpur-Violett. Der Hauptsaal wird von Farbraumkörpern beherrscht, die mit helleren Tönen zum Tasten verlocken. Das Großformat in Rosa an der Stirnwand (190 000 Euro) zeigt eine stärkere Farbverschmelzung als die anderen Werke, von denen die beiden mit Rouge getränkten mittleren Formate (95 000 Euro) eine fast aquarellistisch duftige und transparente Struktur aufweisen. Frye exhibit an old-fashioned yet enlightened revue of figure drawing Sheila Farr Just how much of a human face can an artist leave out and still create a recognizable likeness?

It all comes down to the eyes, says artist and University of Washington professor Norman Lundin, curator of the Frye Art Museum's delicious summer drawing show, "The Perception of Appearance: A Decade of Contemporary American Figure Drawing."

After Lundin watched an artist friend subtract features from a drawing to see when the likeness disappeared, Lundin concluded, "If we were going to rob a bank, wearing earmuffs would not provide an effective disguise."

With that in mind, Susanna Coffey's nearly invisible sketch "Sense (Hear No Evil)," which barely delineates a pair of ears, makes an ironic addition to this show about how artists present the human form.

"The Perception of Appearance" is an old-fashioned kind of exhibit that, when selected by an enlightened curator, never grows old. Or, as Lundin puts it in his excellent catalog essay: "To use a traditional approach in today's art world is to be almost radical." And this is the kind of show that the Frye, with a plump endowment and a mission limited to figurative art, is best positioned to do: It has the budget to bring together a broad assortment of work from all over the country — with a generous inclusion by Northwest artists, I might add — and to produce a meaningful catalog to go with it.

(Get the catalog if you can: Lundin offers some real insights and is a pleasure to read.)

Besides, the institution is always seeking ways to stay relevant and contemporary, and with "The Perception of Appearance" it succeeds, in style.

Drawing on his experience as an artist and professor, Lundin shines as a curator. He selected artists with tremendous technical skill, as well as that elusive something that allows their representations to blossom into art. And he did it with a clear and cohesive purpose: to show the way our perceptions about art change with the shifting of social values.

Interestingly, one thing that hasn't changed in 21st-century figure drawing — even in a show selected to include a good share of women artists — is that by far the favorite life-drawing subject is still the female nude. It seems strange that the male nude, so powerfully depicted in classical times and revisited during the Renaissance by Leonardo and Michelangelo, has never been fully appreciated since.

In this exhibit, Robert Schultz, for one, turns the tables and poses a male model in a precarious stance on top of a ladder. Then he focuses in, from the toes to the waist, on his delicate balancing act: hands floating outstretched like a tightrope walker, thigh muscles tensed.

For the most part, the pleasantly crowded exhibition is displayed in vaguely thematic groupings that provide a satisfying sense of cohesiveness. One of the most intriguing sections is the one that abandons life drawing for lifeless drawing.

What happens to “I” at the moment of death? Is there a soul that rushes out with the final breath?

What happens to consciousness? Where does all our energy go?

The drawings of artists Vincent Desiderio, Peggy Macnamara, Tim Lowly and Ruprecht Von Kaufmann leave us pondering those essential questions. In an exhibition where physicality rules, Von Kaufmann stands out for taking a more metaphysical approach. His 2001 charcoal and conté drawing “Angel” seems to be both corpse and levitating spirit in one.

As an interesting sidebar to all the wonderful drawings, “The Perception of Appearance” sparked a cordial feud between curators. As guest curator for the exhibition, Lundin advocated hanging the pieces without labels so that viewers could experience them more directly.

That got him into a bit of head-butting with the Frye’s director of curatorial affairs, Debra Byrne.

Byrne, hired last year as the Frye’s first staff curator, believes the way a museum presents art helps shape viewers’ understanding and that an institution is responsible for providing an informative context. The two state their positions about labels in dueling catalog essays and “compromised” by posting the artists’ last name and a reference number by each piece. Naturally, I can’t resist adding my two cents to the debate.

I sympathize with Byrne’s position. But by being so determined in her stance, I think she missed an opportunity to expand the way viewers learn about art. Lundin presents a lucid and compelling argument for leaving off the labels, and I think Byrne should have let him do it. A guest curator of his knowledge and experience deserves a chance to challenge people’s viewing habits.

So much of our perception of a work is aligned with the artist’s reputation. Lundin wants us to forget about the artist (for a change) and look at the art. I’m all for it. A simple number by each piece would have been enough to allow anyone interested (including me, for this review) to look up the artist’s name on the handout exhibition checklists provided in the galleries.

Paintings That Force Us to Examine Our Conscience Holly Myers In a statement on his current body of work, Ruprecht von Kaufmann includes a quotation by German writer Martin Walser: “A dream that’s forced into the light of a different language will only reveal what we ask. Like a tortured man, it will say anything we want it to say. So does the past.”

The German-born, Art Center-trained Von Kaufmann tests Walser’s theory–challenging viewers to interrogate the past–in an unusual series of historical portraits that makes up about half of the exhibition. His subjects are notorious figures, all of whom are responsible for large quantities of death and destruction in the service of a political or religious ideal.

Among them are some of the usual suspects, such as Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot, as well as less familiar ones, like Jean Kambanda, the prime minister of Rwanda during the Hutu slaughter of Tutsi refugees in 1994, and Carl Clauberg, a Nazi gynecologist who spent much of WWII conducting gruesome experiments in concentration camps in search of “cheap and efficient” methods for mass sterilization.

Rather than granting these figures their standard historical regalia, however, Von Kaufmann portrays each in a particularly vulnerable (albeit imaginary) situation: in utero.

Each of these visually striking paintings is a diptych: on the left, a fetus floats in a painterly swirl of soft, eerily illuminated color; on the right, a portion of the fetus’ skeleton appears as a realistically rendered electric-blue X-ray. Laying commonly held notions of evil across the archetypal icon of innocence, then subjecting that icon to a pseudoscientific mode of examination, Von Kaufmann seems to be demanding from the past a new response–an explanation that more adequately accounts for the persistent phenomenon of atrocity–as well as challenging viewers to interrogate their own assumptions.

Also included in the exhibition are four large paintings depicting dozens of nude figures crammed closely together, as though in a subway car or other tight container, and pressed forward against the surface of the canvas, which Von Kaufmann has painted to resemble a wall of glass.

Very subtle reflections, masterfully conveyed across the paintings’ surfaces, suggest another world on our side of that wall, populated with faintly glimpsed onlookers much like us. Although somewhat less pointed than the smaller paintings–the people trapped in these works are nameless, their predicament enigmatic and our position ambiguous–they’re equally unsettling in their demands on our conscience.

Painting a Mirror for Humanity Leah Ollman Ruprecht von Kaufmann’s paintings are unnerving. They thrust viewers into face-to-face confrontations with the vulnerable, naked and trapped, the compromised and the morally ambiguous. Daunting as well is Von Kaufmann’s technical facility. He paints physical and psychological aspects of the human figure with uncanny persuasiveness.

At 28, Von Kaufmann has already had a handful of well-received solo exhibitions in San Diego, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Several group shows of representational painting–most recently, “Representing L.A.,” at the Laguna Art Museum–have also featured his work, which abounds with religious, literary, philosophical, historical and art historical references. Grady Harp, curating a show of figurative art for the Art Institute of Southern California in 1999, wrote of the way Von Kaufmann draws “from the pessimism of 20th century philosophy, literature and psychology” while allowing for the possibility of redemption.

Of the 14 artists in that show, Harp wrote in the exhibition catalog, “it is the youngest among them, Ruprecht von Kaufmann, who shakes his fist at the universe most fiercely.”

Although figurative art is generally considered a genre distinct from abstraction and conceptual art, Von Kaufmann rejects the division.

“For me, it’s quite natural to work with figures, but there are certain things that are easier to achieve through abstraction,” he said, sitting in the Koplin Gallery, where his latest show was about to be installed. “I don’t really believe in the categorization of styles. It’s absurd, because they blend together. They’re not mutually exclusive. A conceptual artist can use figures in his work, and figurative paintings, to a certain degree, are abstract. When you look really close at a painting, you have all these textures and they kind of fall apart into something different, and you can just enjoy the quality of the paint.”

Categorizing people can be just as problematic, says Von Kaufmann, a tall, slightly reserved young man with a spunky, tousled haircut. He’s referring to three huge paintings in the show. They depict a dense pack of nude figures, in one case waisthigh in water, who are seemingly pressed against a pane of glass. Men, women, and children in a variety of shapes and colors cram together like subway passengers at rush hour. But they aren’t headed anywhere, they’re stuck, fully exposed, in a sort of display case. Most are passively resigned to their fate, although a few are agitated enough to seek reprieve above the heads of the others. Along the back of one man’s neck, a tattoo reads, “All animals are equal, some are more equal than others.”

The titles of the paintings–“S-80-116-12,” for instance–refer, somewhat jokingly, Von Kaufmann says, to the size of the canvas and the number of figures each contains. He calls the series “the human zoo.”

“We always like to categorize groups,” the German-born artist says, with just a trace of an accent. “It helps us to say they’re not us, we’d better just care for ourselves. But we need to think of how our actions are going to impact this other group of people. That’s why I like this image of people stuck together, because every move that one person does is going to impact another person. Many people still think of this planet as being really big, but I think it’s getting smaller and smaller.

Everything we do is eventually going to come around to haunt us.”

The figures in the paintings stand nearly life-size, and the glass they appear to press against reveals itself in part through faint reflections of clothed spectators on our side of the display.

“I wanted to use figurative painting in a different way, not as though you’re looking into another space, like television, which is not very real,” he said. “The canvas is like a mirror, and this way, hopefully the humanity of the figures is more real.”

Surrounded by these paintings, the viewer might feel trapped, which is just what Von Kaufmann wants. Yet he doesn’t see the works as disturbing.

“Other people see them that way,” he says. “I want to make them beautiful. They’re not comfortable, but you want people to stop and engage themselves a bit. I’m very attracted to that combination of beautiful and appalling.”

He finds that friction in the meditative yet bleak canvases of Mark Rothko and the aggressive but elegiac works of Anselm Kiefer. It’s also one of the striking characteristics of the work of F. Scott Hess, Von Kaufmann’s mentor at Art Center College of Design. Hess, in his most recent body of work, paints scenes jarring in their marriage of the vivid and the mysterious.

Before transferring to the Pasadena campus in the mid-’90s, Von Kaufmann studied briefly at the school’s former European annex in Switzerland. After graduating, he stayed in L.A. for a few years, working part-time as a design consultant for Fox television, doing “dreadful things that paid well.” Disenchanted with Southern California, in December 2000, he moved to New York.

The “human zoo” paintings in the Koplin show were conceived before the events of Sept. 11, although Von Kaufmann recognizes that the attacks have heightened the urgency of their humanistic message. The other series in the show came directly out of the terrorist attacks and their aftermath.

“I was inspired by hearing the word ‘evil’ too often on the radio,” Von Kaufmann explains. It seemed “very easy and lazy,” he says, to use that label with such black-and-white certainty, pronouncing people either with us or against us, guilty or innocent.

At the time, he had been working on a group of paintings of fetuses, floating in utero, modest-sized canvases in radiant orange, violet and emerald. He decided to pair each canvas with a painting on film, made to look like the X-ray of a baby, and displayed in a light box. To the X-ray images he applied identification labels, among them: Stalin, Pol Pot, Robespierre, Leslie Groves (director of the Manhattan Project), Carl Clauberg (Nazi doctor in charge of mass sterilization program). “I was trying to find people who shared a common characteristic, that they started out believing so strongly in their ideals that they eventually were willing to pay any price to achieve that goal.”

The series, like so much of Von Kaufmann’s work, plays off the friction between what appeals to the eye and what chafes the mind.

“I want to force a certain perspective on the viewer,” he says. “First you’ll see a cute little baby, and at first you’ll sympathize.

Then you see who it is and you’re appalled. All of these started out, presumably, as loved children. Was it their environment, their times, or an evil gene? Is there such a thing as an evil gene?”

An additional painting in the series brings those provocative questions close to home. In format, it resembles the rest, with the floating fetus exuding innocence and the painted X-ray presenting a falsely authoritative window to the subject’s inner being. Von Kaufmann labels this one differently, however. In place of a specific name, he’s identified this package of human possibility, in German, as “Jederman”–“everyone.” This, he hopes, is where we project ourselves into the picture and muse on our own potential for evil.

Von Kaufmann’s previous work summoned us in as well through the bracing stares of the figures that bridge the pictorial space and our own.

The narratives, though, tended to be more complex, with symbolic elements pulling them in multiple, incompatible directions. One painting from 1998, for instance, shows several physicians attending to a dying man. One doctor’s clipboard bears a sketch of a work by Marcel Duchamp, another the name of German satirist. The new work is more pared down, but just as involving. In his statement for the Koplin show, Von Kaufmann declares that he wants to “turn the viewer into a conspirator.” He rails against complacency, both the kind that enables a viewer to pass by a painting without becoming engaged, and the kind that allows for violence to recur with cyclical regularity.

“When people see a representational painting, there are recognizable clues that give them ways to approach the painting,” he said. “But at the same time, they can also distance themselves by saying, ‘This is just a painting. I’m looking into a window to another world, but it’s not really my world.’ I was looking for a way to draw the viewer into the paintings and have them participate, to lessen the narrative and base the work on impact. I was looking for ways to simplify the narrative, but I still put in a lot of clues.”

Art Review; Catching the 'Next Wave' of Painters A core of Southern California artists gets a nimble introduction in a somewhat unfocused collection at the California Center for the Arts.

Painting per se is neither good nor bad, but there most certainly are good and bad paintings--or else, where's the argument? Being thrilled by a [Salomon Huerta] or Calame doesn't mean you have to accept the reactionary smugness of, say, Ruprecht von Kaufman, whose well- painted illustration of a hospital room centers on the withered body of an aged corpse surrounded by learned doctors, their medical charts displaying a mechanistic image from Duchamp's "The Large Glass." The painting, titled "The Oath of Hippocrates," whines about Duchamp's iconoclasm as if it had broken some artistic pledge to first do no harm to figure painting.

Besemer's vivid stripes of acrylic paint, which hang like towels over rods without benefit of a canvas or wood support, make ephemeral color something tangible and weighty. Calame's intricately interwoven splotches of vibrant hues are grounded in the world of chance, their shapes having been traced from random stains found on the street, but the final composition and palette are meticulously reorganized. And Min's penchant for in- between, impossible-to-name colors in wide vertical bands on slightly irregular shaped-canvases shows there's something potent left to be explored in territory opened 25 years ago by Robert Mangold and other Minimalists.
