A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

INSIDE THIS ISSUE SWISS CLUB

Dear Members, When I first laid eyes on the Swiss Club, I recall being enchanted by the Clubhouse. It seemed to me that it had been lifted straight out of a fairytale. It also reminded me of the gracious black and white colonial bungalows, beloved of expats, that are dotted around the island from Dempsey Hill to Mount Pleasant. The fact that it was red and white rather than the predictable black-and-white combo made it all the more appealing to me (red happens to be my favourite colour). In other words, I loved the old Clubhouse. From all reports, while the renovated Clubhouse has undergone an amazing makeover, it has retained all the charm of the original building. I cannot wait to see it, and I hope you share my excitement. At the time this issue goes to print, the date for the reopening has not yet been fixed. Look out for further updates in the Club’s e-newsletter. More good news – the annual Summerfest will go ahead, albeit not as per usual. The Management have ‘cooked up’ an intriguing ‘Tropical Fruit Fair’… In honour of the event, we’ve included a tropical fruit-themed contest for kids on page 31 of this issue of ‘Relax’. Have a go! Have a wonderful May and June. Next issue, we will have passed the midpoint of the year, and Members with children will probably be facing a long two months of holidays at home in Singapore. We hope you get some inspiration for family days out from our no-cost and low-cost suggestions on page 28 to 30. Singapore may be small, but that makes it all the more navigable. This rich treasure-trove of culture and nature is an amazing place to explore! Thanks for reading. Till next issue…

A WORD FROM THE

COMMITTEE

Thank you for travelling with us on the Club’s renovation journey. During the early planning stages, nobody could have guessed at the challenges ahead. Your patience during this unforeseeably prolonged process has been much appreciated.

Dear Members, The Swiss Club renovation works are now reaching their final phases and the long-awaited completion of our ‘new’ Clubhouse is now in sight. As this issue of ‘Relax’ goes to print, the following processes are either in progress or completed as indicated. Upon their total completion, we need to wait for the ‘green light’ from the Singapore Building Construction Authority (BCA) before commencing operations. - Testing and commissioning of the all the electrical, air-conditioning, fire and water systems, plus the kitchen and refrigeration equipment - Inspections of the site to be carried out by the design consultants - Submission of applications for final permits to the relevant Singapore authorities for Government approval: • PUB Sanitary inspection (completed) • Architectural RI inspection (completed) • MEP systems inspection • BCA building and structural inspection • SFA (NEA) waters and systems inspection - Swiss Club Operations and Kitchen setup and training - Landscaping works will be ongoing throughout May and June once the hoardings are removed upon receipt of the mandatory Government occupation permits. Thank you for travelling with us on the Club’s renovation journey. During the early planning stages, nobody could have guessed at the challenges ahead. Your patience during this unforeseeably prolonged process has been much appreciated.

A MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER

Beyond the reopening of the Clubhouse, we have a string of exciting events lined up to keep you continually engaged, entertained and committed to the Club.

Dear Members, I am delighted to share that the reopening of the renovated Clubhouse is, at last, tentatively scheduled for May. As I write this message, the physical works are already 95 percent complete and we will begin seeking the necessary Government approvals upon their full completion in April. However, as we have no control over the timeline of the approval process, I am obliged to add the word ‘tentatively’ to cover all eventualities. Touch wood, all will go as planned. Please expect some changes to the opening hours of our restaurants in the days prior to the reopening of the Clubhouse, during which time many of our staff will be deployed in setting up Clubhouse facilities and reinstating equipment. Though it will be a case of all hands on deck during this short and intensely busy period, rest assured that we will do our utmost to minimise inconveniences. I feel confident that once you lay eyes on your beautiful new Clubhouse, any minor disruptions will be forgotten. Beyond the reopening of the Clubhouse, we have a string of exciting events lined up to keep you continually engaged, entertained and committed to the Club. Among them are our now annual Summerfest – albeit in a very different format, our Mother’s Day Brunch and our Father’s Day Barbecue Lunch. Book early, mark your calendars and save the dates! On a more serious note, may I remind you to please remember to wear masks at all times other than eating and swimming. For repeat offenders, the Management reserves the right to restrictions from entering the

Club. While nobody enjoys taking this hard line, it is for the greater good that we are adopting a zero-tolerance stance. It would be very sad indeed to see the Club closed, especially so close to the summer break, and have everyone suffer for the ‘sins’ of a few. Moving on to a sensitive topic, please ensure that all babies and toddlers are kitted up in swimming diapers when entering the pool. Over the past three months, we have had several mishaps which have caused quite a stink, so to speak. It is highly unpleasant, not to mention unhygienic, and completely avoidable. Now I’ve gotten that off my chest, I would like to invite you to reciprocate by raising any issues that you would like to discuss with me. My ears are always open, and all feedback, both positive and negative, is very welcome. Please email me directly at aaron.lim@swissclub.org.sg and let me know what’s on your mind. Thank you, dear Members and friends, for the concerted effort in keeping our Club safe, clean and open. It is greatly appreciated. Please do join me in welcoming back the grand old dame, now rejuvenated with a facelift – your ‘good old, brand new’ Clubhouse! Yours sincerely,

A. Lim Aaron Lim General Manager

HEALTH AND SAFETY NEWS

New Clubhouse, Old Rules

W

hile some Members might have booked flights home for the summer, most will be staying in relatively safe and sunny Singapore and looking forward to the reopening of our renovated Clubhouse. However, the ‘old’ rules still apply.

SPOT CHECKS EXPECTED With the reopening of the Clubhouse, we are expecting the frequency of spot checks by the authorities to increase. At this critical point in time, we continue to seek your kind cooperation in adhering to safe distancing measures. No doubt you will want to explore every single corner of the new Clubhouse. Do remember to wear a mask at all times. In addition, please do not move around within the restaurants without your mask, even when visiting the restrooms. THANK YOU, AND A REMINDER While most of our Members have been following the safe distancing measures implemented by the Government (and

Please take note of these ‘new norms’ and Club matters.

Return Your Towels

Our pool towels are now fitted with new and improved RFID tags to help us replenish stocks more efficiently. Please return all towels that have been touched, including unutilised clean towels, into the ‘used bin collector’. Limit your usage to a maximum of two towels per Member and return them immediately after use, or the next day at the latest, to avoid a charge of $16.05 (including GST) per unreturned pool towel.

NOTICE FACE MASKS REQUIRED enforced by the Club), we still see a few Members flouting the rules. Please be reminded that a drink sitting in front of you does not grant you permission to remove your mask entirely. These rules have been in place for many months now, so there really are no acceptable excuses. SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS After much consideration, and with so much at stake in our 150th Anniversary year, we have decided that the time for gentle reminders has passed. Henceforth, Members who breach safe distancing and mask-wearing rules will be banned from entering the Club for 2 weeks from the date of the infringement. This decision was not taken lightly, and was made for the greater good. With your cooperation and support, let’s safely and joyously celebrate the reopening of the new Clubhouse together! DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT COVID-19 SAFETY GUIDELINES? For clarification or information, please email our Safety Management Officers Elvis Tan or Adrian Vogt at: E

Tradition with a Twist W

e kept up tradition while keeping our distance at the Club’s annual lion dance on Sunday 21 February. By necessity, it definitely deviated from the relatively wild abandon of lion dances past. But it was suitably merry and noisy, and, most importantly, it was orderly and safe.

EIGHT IS BOTH A LUCKY AND SAFE NUMBER The lion dance troupe was a pared-down version compared to previous years. In keeping with the safety measures of the day, the group numbered eight exactly – two dancers per lion, three musicians and a troupe leader. An additional drummer played from a distance. All Members present were commendably cooperative, heeding Aaron’s firm request not to cross the lines that had been clearly demarcated with safety tape. The splendid pair of prancing lions navigated the premises, stopping at Turf Square, Jungle Cove, Pavilion and the tennis courts, delighting spectators and bestowing their blessings.

AND HERE COMES ANOTHER LUCKY NUMBER… At Turf Square, the lions revealed the long-awaited lucky combination of numbers with an artful arrangement of orange segments. And the numbers were…

GOOD FORTUNE ABOUNDS Kudos to the management for the impeccable planning and execution of yet another successful and spirited event. A pat on the back to the well-behaved children and their parents who entered into the spirit of the occasion while observing safety measures. How fortunate are we to be celebrating the Year of the Ox in such a beautiful setting, at a time when so many are still stuck indoors. We reckon that bodes well for the year ahead.

Summertime is a Great Time for Tennis T

he last couple of months were busy ones on the tennis courts. The rain stayed away and everyone came out to play!

NEW EVENTS ARE SMASH HITS I’m pleased to share that the Apero Tennis Social every Thursday night and Cardio Ladies’ Tennis on Friday morning have been a great success. Thanks to all involved for your support. We also had a great Easter Camp with almost 50 kids. It was a lot of fun for both kids and coaches! DATES TO NOTE Please note that the Regular Junior programme will take a break for the summer. The last training session will be on Saturday 26 June, and we will resume on Monday 16 August. We will be offering tennis camps every week thoughout summer (depending on the number of participants), starting Monday 28 June till Friday 13 August. Look out for the link in the Swiss Club’s e-newsletter to register your children in May.

HOW TO VOLLEY LIKE A PRO Get the right grip Volleying works best with a Continental grip, as it is most efficient for hitting both forehand and backhand volleys without changing your hand’s positioning. When you’re at the net, every second counts, and having to reposition your hand can determine whether you hit a winner, or tank the tennis ball straight into the fence. Get the right stance and use your body weight When you approach the net, you need enough time to split step. A split step is a simple jump in the air, landing on a balanced point with your legs out. It helps to get your balance right and makes you ready to jump to the ball in any direction. Always use a short movement with your arm, and step forward to the ball with a solid wrist and using your body weight. Get the right motion A standard volley needs a slightly open racquet face and a downward cut in the volley motion, resulting in backspin. This makes the volley bounce low and therefore difficult to play for your opponent. Move your hand forward in the direction that you want the ball to go, and always keep your eyes on the ball till it makes contact with your racquet. Heading into Halftime I t doesn’t matter whether you are winning or losing. All that matters is that you finish the game strong!

Our curriculum goes hand in hand with many of the sports the Club has to offer, setting your child up to excel in the sports they love. Hopefully those sports will soon include basketball! SATURDAY BASKETBALL PROGRAMME Our popular Saturday Basketball Programme is ideal for advanced players aged 13 to 18 years old who are looking for an opportunity to work on their fitness along with multiple aspects of their game. The programme offers participants the platform to go up against players representing their respective school teams. We would be delighted to welcome you and your young adult children to Singapore’s growing basketball community, which becomes especially active with leagues and competition at the end of the year. Look out for information on our regular activities and camps in the Club’s e-newsletter and on our social media sites.

INTERESTED IN PLAYING BASKETBALL WITH SOMA? ON TRACK WITH FITNESS GOALS As we approach the midway mark of 2021, you may be wondering if everyone in the family is on track with their fitness goals. Why not mix things up and keep things interesting for your little ones by trying out some new sports? A Smorgasbord of Sports

A

t Vivo Kids’ sparkling sports centre, there are six core sports on offer. It’s a great way to introduce your little one to a variety of sports while delivering the benefits of exposure to varied movement.

STRUCTURED CURRICULUM, NATURAL PROGRESSION While sport is the beating heart of Vivo Kids, all of our group activities are structured to encourage the development of soft skills. Particular attention is paid to personal development, interaction with others, teamwork and problem-solving. Our parent-accompanied Toddler Classes (for children aged 20 to 36 months) are designed to develop fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, balancing, throwing and kicking. Activities are set to music and punctuated with loads of high fives!

Once kids turn three, they are introduced to the six different sports, focusing on one sport per month with three weeks of skills acquisition and one week of skills revision and games. The children have 45 to 60 minutes of fast-paced, high-energy active time, with specialised age-appropriate sports equipment. It’s a great way to balance sedentary screentime with the joy of movement. LOW COACH TO STUDENT RATIO At Vivo Kids, we maintain a low coach to student ratio of 1:5 to ensure that all children get maximum attention and are fully engaged. Vivian Eng and her team of experienced multi-sport coaches are committed to creating a secure and loving environment in which every child can progress at their own pace. In addition to building physical confidence and social skills, our play-led classes help develop numeracy and literacy skills, including basic shapes recognition, counting and colour concepts too.

HAPPENING HOLIDAY CAMPS Our range of school holiday camps are open to all children aged from three and a half to 12 years. These popular camps fuse multi-sports with team-building games, robotics, and arts and crafts, in small, expert-led groups. Every camper gets to wear their very own Vivo Kids training attire, adorned with adorable dinosaurs and made with breathable dry-fit material. We would love to welcome your child to the multiple benefits of multi-sports, and provide the spark that ignites a lifelong love of sports. Give us a go!

30 European Union Film Festival 2021 From 6 to 21 May th

C

atch the award-winning Swiss-made drama ‘Paradise War – The Story of Bruno Manser’ at the European Union Film Festival 2021, a celebration of European film culture.

THE TRUE STORY OF A SWISS ENVIRONMENTALIST Directed by Swiss filmmaker Niklaus Hilber and starring actor Sven Schelker, ‘Paradise War – The Story of Bruno Manser’ won ‘Best Actor’ at last year’s Swiss Film Awards.

26

The film is based on the true story of Swiss environmental activist Bruno Manser (1954-2000). In 1984, Manser travelled into the jungles of Borneo and encountered the nomadic Penan tribe. When the existence of the Penan was threatened by relentless deforestation, Manser took up the fight against logging with a courage and determination that made him one of the most renowned environmentalists of his time. This fictional drama beautifully shows the journey of Manser ‘going native’ in the Penan tribe. Director Niklaus Hilber captures Manser’s naivety and innocence, portraying him as someone on the path to self-discovery who gets drawn into the Penan’s struggle for livelihood rather than a ‘white saviour’ trying to ‘enlighten’ indigenous people. After sacrificing everything to save the Penan’s livelihoods, he eventually gains international support from renowned figures such as Al Gore, Kofi Annan and Prince Charles. The film ends with Manser disappearing in 2000 in Sarawak, after which he was never seen again. THE MAKING OF THE FILM Paradise War was shot in 76 days in Switzerland, New York, Budapest and Borneo, but was prepared over a period of ten years. With a budget of 6M Swiss Francs (7M SGD), it is among the most expensive of all Swiss productions. The massive production took the team to remote locations among the last remnants

of primary jungle on Borneo. The actors were cast from among the original Penan people, who continue their struggle to this day. With shots of breathtaking landscapes and soundtracks by Academy-Award winner Gabriel Yared, Paradise War is an aesthetically grandiose film that casts light on current environmental issues. AWARDS Zurich Film Festival, Science Film Award 2019 Swiss Film Award, Swiss Film Award, Best Actor 2020 Swiss Film Award, Swiss Film Award, Best Film Editing 2020 (Nomination) Swiss Film Award, Swiss Film Award, Best Fiction Film 2020 (Nomination) SCREENING INFORMATION Venue The Projector 6001 Beach Rd #05-00 Golden Mile Tower Singapore 199589 Language: English, Swiss-German, Penan with subtitles in English Date and time: TBA – check our Facebook page or website for updates To view the festival’s full programme, please visit www.euff.sg

NEWS FROM THE

A Slightly Different Class Camp for Primary 5/6

A

t the beginning of the second semester of each school year, the students of Primary 5/6 usually take a week off from school to go on an outdoor-based trip to the Malaysian Island of Pulau Sibu. This year’s trip had a twist to it.

FROM ISLAND-HOPPING TO FILM-MAKING The objectives of this annual trip are for students to strengthen their team-building skills, learn how to survive in nature, and experience an adventure away from home. However, given the prevailing safety measures and travel restrictions, a trip to Pulau Sibu was out of the question this year. Instead, the students of Primary 5/6 explored Singapore with the aim of producing and editing a video by the end of the week. CULTURE, NATURE, LITERATURE In the course of one action-packed week, the students went on an excursion through historic Kampong Glam, walked through nature reservoirs, took part in a writer’s workshop to write their own introduction to a thriller book, and visited the National Museum. They ended the week with a showcase of their self-produced videos and a presentation of their gripping introductions to thrillers. Despite not leaving Singapore’s shores, it was an exciting and successful week that proved just how much our sunny little island nation has to offer.

Things to Do

in Singapore for Free (or Next to Nothing)

It will soon be summertime and travel is still out of the question for most. But think of it as an opportunity to explore your own backyard. Being Singapore-bound has boundless possibilities for fun and fascination, which don’t cost an arm and a leg. Here’s some inspiration. Fun fact: London is 2.2 times bigger than the whole of Singapore!

WALK OVERSEAS – TO SENTOSA! Skip the queue for the monorail at VivoCity and walk over water via the Sentosa Boardwalk. Entry is just $1 compared to $6 for driving in. The Boardwalk takes you right to the entrance of Resorts World Sentosa. From there, follow the signposts to your pick of beaches – Palawan, Siloso or Tanjong. Eat at one of the food courts or pack a picnic and have fun in the sun (with sunblock) and surf. Note: For weekend visits, you need to book online to ensure safe distancing and avoid overcrowding. Reserve a time slot up to 5 days before your intended visit at: www.sentosa.com/beachreservations

Fun fact: The S.E.A Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is the world’s largest oceanarium.

TIONG BAHRU ART AND EAT BEAT Head for Tiong Bahru – a fabulous hipster meets oldster neighbourhood that’s become something of a public art gallery. The amazing wall murals of YC Yip, a self-taught local artist, adorn many of the clean and foot-friendly lanes, and are great photo opportunities. You can actually pose in front of them and become part of

28

the picture – make like you’re interacting with old-style kueh vendors, bird singing spectators and more. There are loads of quaint little independent boutiques, bookstores and gift shops to explore, too. When hunger pangs hit, head for the famous Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre. The atmosphere is authentic and pretty much everything tastes wonderful.

Fun fact: Tiong Bahru is the site of Singapore’s very first public housing estate, developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT). Before that, it was a cemetery – its name means ‘new cemetery’ in a combo of Hokkien and Malay.

I N T E R E S T

BIG DAY OUT AT THE BOTANIC GARDENS This one never gets old. Singapore’s world-famous Botanic Gardens are a short walk from Orchard Road, and a world away. Entry to the main gardens is free, and there are many interesting things to see and do. Within the gardens, there are many little self-contained gardens with no entry fee. We love the Evolution Garden, where you can travel through 450 million years of time and see dinosaur tracks, fossils and petrified trees. Another favourite is the Jacob Ballas Children’s Playground, which is criss-crossed by educational nature trails, a stream and a suspension bridge. There are even tree-houses!

MULTI-FAITH EXCURSION IN CHINATOWN Expats never fail to be tickled pink to see a Hindu temple, a Muslim mosque and a Buddhist temple all within stone’s throw of each other in Singapore’s Chinatown, and all on South Bridge Road. A visit to all three is a triple cultural treat – and their diverse styles of architecture are quite spectacular. Be sure to check out Sri Mariamman temple on South Bridge Road. Marvel at its intricate ‘goparum’ or entrance tower, covered in Hindu deities and finished with gold paint, and feast your senses on the ritual temple music and drifting scent of incense.

Fun fact: Ironically, Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple – the Sri Mariamman temple, is located in Chinatown. It is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, who is believed to cure the sick.

Pack a picnic and eat under a shady tree or one of the lovely little pergolas and rotundas around the gardens. If you’re pressed for time or have too much to carry (including small children who want to be carried when their little legs tire), you could always buy takeaway from Cluny Food Hall, near Cluny Road, or eat in and cool off under the air con.

Fun Fact: Singapore Botanic Gardens became Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.

Just a few doors down is the neighbouring Masjid Jamae mosque on South Bridge Road. Its architecture blends elements from East and West, as seen in its palace-inspired façade, its Chinese green-glazed tiles and the Doric columns in its prayer hall. If you’re lucky, you might catch the quite-beautiful call to prayer, or ‘adhan’, which calls Muslims to leave worldly matters behind for a spell and pray five times a day. Finally, head for the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum, a relative newcomer to the area that was built in 2007 at great expense. Built in grand Tang-dynasty style, it is home to what Buddhists believe to be the left canine tooth of Buddha.

Fun Fact: The Buddha Tooth Relic is housed under a giant domed structure, or ‘stupa’, which weighs 3,500 kilograms and contains 320 kilograms of gold!

FOUR FOR STARTERS These four great days out cover all the elements of a great summer holiday – white sandy beaches, a splash of colourful local culture, great cheap eats, beautiful natural scenery, and stunning architecture. And that’s just a taste of what’s on the menu of Singapore’s affordable and diverse offerings. When you’re hungry for more, plan an excursion to Little India for a treasure hunt around the infamous multi-storey 24-hour Mustafa Centre – a department store and more (that’s an understatement if ever there was one). Refuel with a cheap and delicious savoury South Indian pancake, known as a ‘dosa’ or ‘dosai’.

Head for Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, brimming with bio-diversity, and get a taste of farming. Follow it up with a visit to Jurong Frog Farm and Hay Dairies, where goats’ milk is produced and pasteurised.

Pull and

on your hiking boots take on Bukit Timah, Singapore’s very own little ‘Everest’. You might pass a group of monkeys on your way up or down – whatever you do, do not feed them. You might even pass the Swiss Club’s very own recently formed trekking group!

What Makes Steven Run

nbeknown to many, our talented pastry chef Steven Leong is a keen runner. In fact, he stays in Woodlands and runs to work and back every day. That’s one way to burn calories and definitely ‘earn’ dessert!

SWEET TASTE OF JOB SATISFACTION A married man of 36, Steven is Singaporean born and bred. He has worked extensively in hotels, bakeries and high-end restaurants. Prior to joining the Swiss Club in September last year, he was working at Salt Grill with our Chef de Cuisine Razy.

At the Club, he prepares a wide variety of cakes, cookies, pies, breads and plated desserts, using both traditional and innovative techniques and recipes. “I like to create new and exciting desserts to renew our menus and engage the interest of customers, while not forgetting their dietary requirements,” said Steven. His own harshest judge, Steven is grateful when his self-doubt is dispelled by words of encouragement from his superiors and colleagues. Of course, Members’ compliments make his day. “When you have good bosses who truly understand you, every day is an enjoyable day!” shared Steven, obviously a happy man.

I like to create new and exciting desserts to renew our menus and engage the interest of customers, while not forgetting their dietary requirements.

NEW DESSERTS EVERY MONTH Naturally, Steven places great importance on desserts (‘stressed’ spelled backwards). “I find happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment in continuously serving people something good to eat for dessert,” said Steven, who believes that a stellar desserts menu is what makes a good Club or dining establishment truly great. It is the final flavour that lingers, after all. Steven urges all Members to try the Club’s dessert specials, which will be changed monthly on a regular basis. How sweet is that!

If you are a business owner, a marketing decision-maker or a freelancer, consider advertising right here in ‘Relax’, the bi-monthly magazine of the Swiss Club, Singapore. A presence in these pages will connect you and your business with more than 1,264 Swiss Club Members and their families. They are well-connected, well-travelled professionals who value quality, individuality and authenticity.

Does that sound like your kind of customer? We thought so. For more information, a media kit or a customised advertising package, please email marketing@swissclub.org.sg
