Welcome.... I can’t believe that it’s May already and you are reading the fifth issue of our new magazine, how time flies! We do hope that you are enjoying our magazines, we’ve had some amazing positive feedback and it would seem that they are being very well received by the community of Southbourne. Included in the magazine are a number of interesting columns written by members of this community about various things going on in Southbourne. It’s great to have this community content as this is essentially what the magazine is all about. Our Local History column this month will take a lot of readers back in time, turn to page 6 to read all about the Shell House, which I’m sure many of you will remember fondly. We have two bank holidays to enjoy this month, let’s hope that the weather will start picking up soon so that we can get out and about and enjoy all that our local surroundings have to offer. Don’t forget that if you run a club, class, group or society in Southbourne you can list it for free within our magazine. Similarly, if you have a community event coming up then please let us know about it and we will do our best to feature it in the ‘What’s On’ listings. Please make all submissions via our website. We look forward to hearing from you!

Local History by Hattie Miles walkingtalks.wordpress.com

Eccentricity seems to be a very British trait, so I wasn’t particularly surprised when I first came to Bournemouth in 1987 to find an extraordinary garden, made out of shells, right here in Southbourne.

The Shell House was the creation of a man called George Howard who, according to a 1965 Pathé film series on eccentrics, was a Welsh coalminer who ran away to sea. He travelled all over the world collecting shells, accumulating more than a million, from far-away places like Japan, California and the South Pacific. Eventually he decided to settle with his family in Southbourne, buying a substantial house with clear sea views in Overcliff Drive. It was a family tragedy that caused him to start creating his famous shell garden. In 1948 his fourteen-year-old son Michael, contracted meningitis and died.

George, with his wife Sarah, began to use the extensive shell collection to build a memorial to their son. George once explained that he created things out of shells because they were ‘the only things in this world that grow more beautiful after death.’

It was an incredible sight - a cliff-top wonderland constructed from shells, mother-of-pearl, pieces of coral, chunks of glass, broken china and bits of old tiles. It offered a kaleidoscope of extraordinary patterns and also depicted characters like St George and his dragon and there was also a church, a wishing well, a lucky fountain and several grottos. A huge clamshell from the Philippines was set onto a plinth with a sign beneath inviting ‘Please take a photo of your wee one sitting in shell’. A notice near the entrance stated: ‘The shells in this garden are from the Seven Seas’.

So many people visited the garden and donated money that George was able to give thousands of pounds to charities and two years Hattie after his death, in 1986, Christchurch Hospital named it’s League of Friends activity centre The Howard Centre in recognition of his fundraising. Sadly, in the 1980s and 90s vandalism and theft became a problem and the garden gradually declined in popularity. I remember being sent to photograph damage there in my days as a photographer on the Daily Echo. By then it was becoming quite dilapidated.

I suppose nothing is forever, and in 2001 George’s family decided it was best to dismantle the famous garden – it was a hugely difficult decision - two years later the house was demolished and replaced by flats.

In a message to Andy Foot (AndyFoot.com), who has an interesting website link about the Shell House, George Howard’s granddaughter Carol Mason says: “The spirit of the Shell House and my Grandfather had been slowly eroded. Believe me, it took incredible strength on behalf of the whole family to end the Garden”.

I know many locals have very happy memories of visiting the Shell House and that it was particularly enchanting for children to explore. I hope this article will have reminded you of your visits.

SUPER SOFIA! Local Southbourne girl, Sofia Faulkner, has raised the magnificent sum of £1650 for the Little Princess Trust by growing and donating 15 inches of her hair to the very worthy charity, who make wigs for children who have lost it through illness, treatment or alopecia.

The Trust make 80-100 wigs every month at the cost of at least £350 so demand for donated hair and funds is high, to donate the minimum length is 7 inches, probably less than most people might think. Sofia had her donated hair cut off in Shampers salon on Carbery Row by owner Gemma. Many local businesses, including Shampers, Den’s Fish and Chips on Craneligh Road and Shokk Gym have supported Sofia’s efforts by displaying posters to raise awareness of this worthwhile cause and Sofia and her family have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity they have received.

As well as the considerable sum raised for the Trust, St Peter’s students Leah, Tilly and Niamh have produced a YouTube ahe children it supports. The video features another local girl, Molly, who attends King’s Park School who has benefited from one of the wigs made by the Trust. The video can be viewed on YouTube by following the link at https://m.youtube.com/ watch?v=0jGQyg7Yc1E. Sofia has a Just Giving page for anyone who is interested in supporting her and her efforts for this very worth cause.

Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA) The wonderful month of May, the air filled with spring, bird song and lighter evenings that push away the night into its rightful place.

Clive

And so the populous has finally raised from hibernation to embrace the warmth that with any luck will nestle nicely on our bank holidays, landing of the 2nd and 30th of May. So the question is…what to do?

Traditionally it’s time for the spring clean and house revamping and there’s no better place to tread than the new pathways of our improved high street to find some fresh ideas. You & Store offer beautifully crafted wallpapers, curtains and blinds to give your home a new look and lift. Tilly’s gifts, Coastal Creative and Nellie Mimosa all offer some nice accessories for the home and some great gift ideas too. May 15th between 12pm and 1.30pm will see the second instalment of Music in the Walk, held in Fishermans Walk, an opportunity to just relax and listen to pleasant music before continuing your day with a leisurely walk or a late afternoon lunch from our growing food and drink establishments. The Brewhouse finally opened its doors last month and is a welcome addition to Southbourne to compliment the likes of Larder House, Ludo Lounge, Quarters, Deli Rocks plus many more, all offering excellent individuality. It’s one reason the good people of Bournemouth and out of town visitors are choosing Southbourne as their chosen destination this spring. And it only gets better. Wheels in Southbourne returns on the first weekend in June. The high street will be closed to host The Super Cars drive through, Savage Skills bike show, live music stage, kids entertainment with street food and drink stalls plus much more. Definitely not one to miss. Southbourne really has notched up a gear and is driving in the fast lane of chic, quirky independent shops, variant bars and restaurants, fantastic nightlife and festival rich.

Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club Last month I mentioned sunburn. This month I am going to mention the effects of cold and heat.

Bill

Hypothermia. Most people won’t suffer from hypothermia on a beach unless they spend at least 30 minutes in the sea or have spent time in the sea and then not been able to warm up. The first thing you will notice is that when you get cold you shiver, this is a good thing as it helps warm you up and is ‘normal’. When you get colder you stop shivering as your body decides to save energy. This is when it’s time to get out and warm up. Be careful if you have a hot drink as your body will return to the shivering stage and the hot drink can go everywhere! If you remain in the cold environment you can start to get colder and colder. This can effect your judgement as your brain slows down. You can forget basic words and get confused. Alcohol will make the effects of hypothermia worse and as it also impairs your judgement, this means you shouldn’t ‘drink and swim’. Hyperthermia. Two different letters but this is the effect of excess heat. The 2 conditions are called Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. Heat Exhaustion is the more common and is effectively shock due to dehydration. The body will be very moist due to sweat and will look pale. Get someone suffering from these symptoms to a cool place and allow them to sip water (not gulp it down as they could be sick). Heat Stroke is a very dangerous condition. The body will be hot and dry and the skin will look red. The excess temperature is now starting to ‘cook’ the body, the brain is at risk from this heat and you need to cool them down quickly. You will also need medical help so call the lifeguards or the ambulance. Of all the conditions mentioned, this is the most dangerous; it can cause irreversible damage to the body quite quickly. Don’t be afraid of over-cooling them.

TUCKTONIA: 5 - ‘A SALUTE TO BRITAIN’ Written by Alexander McKinstry

The grand opening of Tucktonia, the model village at the back of the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park, took place on Bank Holiday Sunday, 23 May 1976, with Arthur Askey acting as master of ceremonies. ‘We’d tried to get Bernie Ecclestone,’ recalls Harry Stiller, the ex-Formula 3 champion who came up with the idea for Tucktonia – and who stayed on, as consultant in the project, after selling the site to Grand Metropolitan in 1975. ‘I’d known Bernie for years, and of course he’s tiny, so that would have fitted with the model landscape. But it wasn’t his sort of thing. Then Ken James, the site manager, said “Why don’t you ask Arthur Askey?” – and he agreed to do it for one hundred quid, plus his train fare.

The 200 or so models making up the site continued arriving till the last minute, some requiring urgent repairs after suffering damage in transit. As the landscape took shape, a security firm was enlisted to provide 24-hour surveillance: Sentinel Security, consisting of a father-and-son team, Ken and Tony Janes, and their German shepherd, Gretchen. Sue Good, who worked at the leisure park from 1974, remembers patrolling the site with them the night before the grand opening – ‘leash in one hand, torch in the other, ready to ambush any intruders waiting to blow up the Houses of Parliament!’ Just as the object of Tucktonia was to replicate ‘the best of Britain in miniature’, the opening ceremony was dubbed ‘a salute to Britain’ and took the form of a carnival through Christchurch, celebrating the more colourful aspects of Britain’s heritage. It took off from the Bridge Street car park at 2 p.m., headed by the seventy-five-year-old Askey – clearly having the time of his life aboard a 1909 open-topped Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, on loan To advertise please call 01202 477214

from the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Accompanying him were ten-year-old ‘Tucktonia princess’ Sarah Ridout; the Mayor of Christchurch, John Morgan; and, bringing up the rear, brass bands, Scots pipers, majorettes, Beefeaters, commercial floats and other vintage vehicles. Amid crowds three deep, the procession trooped along Christchurch High Street, Sopers Lane, Willow Drive (not long opened) and into Stour Road, where, at 2.30 p.m., Askey raised the Tucktonia flag – a chirpy robin, with a Union Jack breast – and declared the model landscape open. Crowds then flooded in to view the new attraction while Askey signed autographs, having already posed for photographs with the exhibits, some of which are reproduced here. There were teething troubles that day.The miniature trains showed an unfortunate tendency to crash into each other. The bascules of Tower Bridge got stuck in the ‘open’ position, while the cars on the Tucktonia motorway only moved in fits and starts. More portentously, as The Christchurch Herald reported on 29 May, residents in the flats overlooking the complex ‘were unhappy about the noise from all the merrymaking’. We shall look at these local objections further down the line, but in our next issue we will focus on the employees who smoothed over these initial difficulties, and helped make Tucktonia such a success.

MEET ELLIOT THE BLACK CAT

Elliot is a friendly young chap who is looking for an owner who can give him plenty of fuss and attention.

He sadly arrived after his previous owner became too ill to care for him anymore and would love to find a new home soon. Elliot has a minor heart murmur that will need to be monitored at his annual health checks. He is an affectionate chap who enjoys human company.

Homeless cats are more likely to be black or black and white and more and more black and black-and-white cats are being taken in by Cats Protection’s Ferndown Homing Centre than any other colour.

“The unfortunate thing for these cats is that not only do we have more of them coming in, they are also much harder to find homes for. They often get overlooked by prospective owners who would rather adopt a more unusual colour, like ginger, or tabby cats which are very popular,” says Donna Ward, centre manager.

Black and white cats have just as much love to give and make equally good companions as any other colour cat. “If you are able to adopt a cat please get in touch as we’d love to show you the beautiful black and black and white cats we have that are desperate for a loving home,”says Tanya Knox, senior cat care assistant.

To find out more about adopting a cat like Elliot from

CATS PROTECTION’S FERNDOWN HOMING CENTRE please call on 03000 120175. Alternatively, visit the centre’s website at www.ferndown.cats.org.uk.

Teen Eye Hello!

I have been busy practicing my driving, as my test is this month. I am very excited but also slightly nervous as Emily the test centre has moved to Poole where I am less familiar with the roads. Hopefully if I practice the test routes often, I will feel more confident for the ‘big day’. Fingers crossed that I pass! This month I have discovered a lovely little cafe in Grand Avenue, Southbourne, just off the High Street. The Hungry Husky focuses on breakfast and lunchtime menus, offering a range of sandwiches, burgers and a variety of cooked breakfast options. My personal favourite is the ‘Breakfast Wrap’, priced very reasonably and cooked fresh to order with your choice of sauces. The staff are always very polite and friendly and can prepare the food to eat in or take away. I can definitely recommend the cafe and will be returning soon!

Another great shop in Southbourne is Elizabeth’s Cake Shop. They have a large variety of speciality breads such as Cholla and Rye as well as rolls, baguettes and torpedos, all of which can be bought plain or with a filling of your choice. I love the Chocolate Brownies they offer too; they are soft, chewy and topped with thick chocolate fudge icing. They are delicious! It is very exciting that I only have one more month left of revision before my A2 exams in June. I can’t wait to finish and have a long summer ahead of me. The fact I go on holiday the weekend after my exams finish is really helping me get through all the work I have to do to prepare myself. Also having a few events such as the Soundclash Festival this month will give me a welcome break from revising. I wish you all good luck for any exams you may be taking over the next few months.

Homemade Toffee Crisp Bars INGREDIENTS

125g rice krispies 175g unsalted butter 5 Mars Bars – roughly chopped 300g milk chocolate

METHOD

Line a 7 x 10 inch baking dish with greaseproof paper. Place the butter and the Mars Bars into a saucepan and melt gently over a low heat, stirring frequently. Once melted, beat well to eliminate any lumps. Add the rice krispies and mix well to ensure they have been coated in the mars bar sauce then pour into the baking dish and ensure it is pressed into all the corners and the top is smooth. Leave somewhere to cool for about an hour; meanwhile melt the chocolate in the microwave at 30 second bursts. Once the krispy mixture is cool, pour the chocolate over the top and smooth it all over and leave somewhere to cool again. When the chocolate is cool place in the fridge for an hour to set, then carefully remove from the dish using a sharp knife cut into equal sized rectangles. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them as crispy as possible and the chocolate firm and chilled.

Have a lovely May!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? BRING ON THE BIOLOGICAL WARFARE!

I’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters.

Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground.

30 • Southbourne Eye • May 2016

Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...
