Dear Reader

I can’t believe that it’s May already. It’s a great time of year for Christchurch with the Food & Wine Festival coming to town. The main festival weekend is 7th and 8th of May when there will be loads Cheryl going on but there are events happening throughout the month at many local venues, take a look at the festival website for more details, www.christchurchfoodfest.co.uk. We also have two bank holidays to enjoy this month, let’s hope that the weather will start picking up soon so that we can get out and about and enjoy all that our local surroundings have to offer. Some of you may know that I love boating and I bought my first little boat last year to potter up and down the river in. It feels like you’re in another world when on the water and all your troubles and strife just ebb away. Don’t get me wrong, you still have many concerns on the water such as making sure that all on board are safe, that those around are you are safe and keeping your boat in tip top condition so as not to breakdown on the water! But after all that, the pleasure I get from being on the water in such beautiful surroundings is nothing short of amazing. I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful town with such a great community. I’m sure I’ll see many of you on the water very soon.

Local History

by Len Wigg

Christchurch might have been described thus for many centuries. Though in prehistoric times, the harbour by Hengistbury Head was probably one of the busiest in the country. The evidence is visible at The Red House Museum, including flint arrowheads from the Stone Age; Bronze Age axe heads and Iron Age pottery imported from Normandy. Later the Romans came, and chose Hamworthy, building a large fort at Lake near Wimborne. Then the Saxons developed Twynham, meaning `between the rivers’, on the other side of the harbour, with a church which later became the present Priory. Stone and much other local merchandise would have been conveyed by boats using the quay. The Norman Conquest happened in 1066. King William saw the enjoyment to be had from hunting in his newly designated Royal Forest. The main westward route from Winchester or Southampton through this Forest was via Ringwood. There would just have been a network of local packhorse tracks linking villages to Christchurch and Lymington, Ringwood, Wimborne and across the heathland to Poole. In the 17th century George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, travelled extensively and kept a journal. He visited Ringwood and Poole 5 times between 1655 and 1663 but he never used the minor track to Christchurch. Other travellers like Celia Fiennes (c.1682- c.1712) and Daniel Defoe `A Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain’ (1724-26) did not visit either.

- Off the beaten track? It had milestones to show the distance from Lymington and one by the roundabout to Walkford is illustrated. Then more people wished to travel and extend trade. Roads had been neglected so Turnpike Trusts were established with tollhouses to collect money for using and repairing the road. Neighbouring towns featured in at least 2 Turnpike Trusts circa 1750 but Christchurch had none until 1841, when one was authorised to Lyndhurst. Milestones became more informative and a remaining one on the A35 is illustrated. Also the Brinton Toll Bar (illustrated) can be seen better coming towards Christchurch. (Grid Reference SU 276066). It has two small windows facing along the road so the gatekeeper could see traffic approaching and go to collect the toll. The Southampton and Dorchester railway was opened in June 1847 and crossed this road. The station at Holmsley was called `Christchurch Road’ for a while, coaches and horses providing connections with each train. The families who provided these services will be featured in a future article. At last in November 1862 Christchurch gained its own station, on a branch from Ringwood, and the town had easy connections to the rest of the country.

An early map was drawn by John Ogilby c1697. It was a `road strip’ map from Limington (sic) to Pool (sic), now the A337 to Somerford, the town and along the A35.

At long last, a Christchurch development is taking place. Eight years after Aldi’s first application in 2008 for development at the top of Somerford (now called Meteor Park), not only has the work started but it is proceeding at a cracking pace. Indeed it will not be long before the keys to the site are handed over to the retailers. Only a few years ago we were reeling from numerous supermarket planning applications. The site at the back of Barrack Road was the first to get permission for an Asda store – but the site still remains empty. Next Beagles’ application for the building of a Morrisons finally got the go ahead after appeal – but again there is no sign of any development taking place. However, at long last, east Christchurch is getting its development. By the autumn fitting out should be completed, staff recruitment will have taken place and the stores should be opening by Christmas. As well as Aldi, clothing and footwear will be supplied by Matalan, TK Maxx and Sports Direct. The plan is to stop us all going off to Castlepoint and to keep a bigger chunk of our spending here in Christchurch. The worry is the effect it will have on our town centre. With free parking it is bound to attract some shoppers away from the high street. Poundland is also opening a branch at Meteor Park which raises the question as to whether they will still keep on the store that they recently took over in the town centre. The proposed takeover of Argos by Sainsburys also makes one wonder what the long term future of that store will be and whether it may make the move to Sainsburys in east Christchurch in due course. The development at Meteor Park is going to be good for Somerford, but unsettling for the town centre.

BRANSGORE ROTARY VILLAGE FUN DAY 2ND MAY 2016

For well over twenty years Bransgore has held a Village Fun Day on May Bank Holiday Monday and you’ll be pleased to know that this year is no different. The event starts at 1pm and there will be something for everyone. The main arena events this year are Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs, where pigs race down a hurdle track, and Dingle Fingle’s Clowntown Crimewatch, a fast and furious dynamic slapstick stunt show with lots of audience participation.

Older children can tackle the climbing wall whilst the younger children can enjoy the Punch and Judy Show or a magic display. There will also be a number of displays and performances running throughout the afternoon including balloon sculpture, bouncy castles and children’s rides to suit all ages.

In addition there will be a large number of stalls run by village organisations and charities including plate smashing and bric-a-brac. As for refreshments, tea and coffee will be provided in the village hall by the local Scout group, there will be a barbeque on the village green, as well as an ice cream stall and a licensed beer tent. Throughout the afternoon live music will be provided on stage by the Bransgore Community Church Band.

Bransgore Rotary run the Fun Day and all profits are donated to charitable organisations supported by Rotary; let us know if you run a local group that needs a small amount of financial assistance, we may be able to help. Please come along and support us on the day and don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets in the village centre on Saturdays preceding the event. If you have any bric-a-brac you wish to donate please contact Martin Bowles on 01425 674086, or if you would like a stall please contact Roberta Kendall on 01425 674346.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 16 - The Regent Centre

‘Sandwiched’ (excuse pun) between ‘Subway’ and the TIC is the Regent Centre, which first opened as the ‘Regent Cinema’ in 1931.

Apparently the opening was quite a hullabaloo, with the ‘first installation in the county of Holophone musical colour effects’. I have no idea what that gave the cinemagoers of the 30s, but there was clearly some fanfare. That county was Hampshire by the way, Christchurch’s move to Dorset well over 40 years distant.

Fashions wax and wane and cinema lost popularity as folk found other things to do with their spare time. The building became a bingo hall, but thankfully was eventually restored to its former use and is now very much the town’s arts and entertainment hub and smack in the High Street too. Due apologies by the way to those who love their bingo. The Regent Centre was extended at the back with the new Studio Theatre in 2000. Jointly funded by the Regent Centre Association and Council, this was the borough’s main Millennium project. The blue plaque tells us a good deal more about this spot’s history. Before the cinema came along there was a bookshop, ‘Caxton House’, and it was here ‘Gleeson White’ was born in 1852. Well, he was actually born Joseph William White, but dropped his forenames (identical to his father’s) and replaced them with his mother’s maiden name. Whatever his name was, White was clearly a man of some versatility,

being described as ‘artist, illustrator, author and first editor in 1895 of ‘The Studio’ art magazine’. He was also a self-educated craftsman and designer and a collector. He was the son of a bookseller and stationer and traded here as a bookseller himself.

Stephen

Born and educated in Christchurch, White was an ‘art writer’, whose published works included ‘Master Painters of Great Britain’ in four volumes (1897-98). White, an influential editor of the 1890s, lived for a few years in New York in his early 40s, but returned to England to be the first serving editor (1893-95) of ‘The Studio’, a wide-circulation, illustrated, fine and decorative arts magazine. The Regent Centre was yet to come of course. Today it is a happy mix of Art Deco heritage and modern entertainments complex, which is open 365 days a year, including Christmas Day, putting on a variety of shows, everything from films and amateur dramatics to tribute acts and satellite broadcasts. Get out there and enjoy it; it’s infinitely preferable to sitting in front of that ‘box’ in the corner of the living room and being dumbed down by reality-show piffle.

And what happened to Gleeson White? Well, he continued contributing to ‘The Studio’ until he was prematurely taken from us, aged 47, a victim of typhoid fever in 1898. Next time: Trolleybus turntable (the final instalment)

Christchurch Rotary This month’s article is very personal, not only to my own family but also to Christchurch Rotary club business partners.

On Thursday 24th March, Paul Robert Cole Director of B. Cole & Son (Amusements) Ltd expectantly passed away aged 42. Many local residents will know the name of Coles Fun Fair, and probably have seen their families grow up with the fair in the town.

A long established fun fair business travelling in the area, they are a regular feature at Christchurch Park/Quay, Boscombe, and Christchurch Rotary’s very own Stanpit Bonfire. Many people will know William Cole, his brother, as the face of the fair, but Robert was never far away, usually up to his arms in grease. They joined us as business partners a few years ago and were constantly looking for ways to get involved with our club in local projects. Recently the fair brought along to the town a vintage Scammal lorry, which had fallen into almost total disrepair, but they painstakingly restored to its former glory and felt immense pride in sharing their heritage with the town’s people. Becoming a business partner to our club is akin to joining an extended family, and this year we intend to increase partner numbers and seek new opportunities to make a difference in the local area. Robert leaves Tonia his wife, six children, parents, brothers and sisters, and many friends to grieve his loss. However, in true showmen style the ‘show must go on’, with William and Tonia looking to return again this summer with the fair. Likewise, the club have many exciting plans for this summer and as usual I will be reporting on them and maybe seeing you at some of our events.

As always our door is always open, and a warm welcome awaits.

Hi everyone my name is Royal and I’m a 2 year old American Bulldog Cross looking for my forever home.

I will need a strong owner as I’m quite a strong boy who loves to play, especially with a tennis ball. I’m very well behaved and love to be with people and have lived in a large family in the past, when I came into Waggy Tails I had an awful skin problem which was possibly caused by stress and is now being treated, so will need to kept in check. So if you feel you are the right family for me please contact us on the number below.

MEET ELLIOT THE BLACK CAT

Elliot is a friendly young chap who is looking for an owner who can give him plenty of fuss and attention.

He sadly arrived after his previous owner became too ill to care for him anymore and would love to find a new home soon. Elliot has a minor heart murmur that will need to be monitored at his annual health checks. He is an affectionate chap who enjoys human company.

Homeless cats are more likely to be black or black and white and more and more black and black-and-white cats are being taken in by Cats Protection’s Ferndown Homing Centre than any other colour.

“The unfortunate thing for these cats is that not only do we have more of them coming in, they are also much harder to find homes for. They often get overlooked by prospective owners who would rather adopt a more unusual colour, like ginger, or tabby cats which are very popular,” says Donna Ward, centre manager.

Black and white cats have just as much love to give and make equally good companions as any other colour cat. “If you are able to adopt a cat please get in touch as we’d love to show you the beautiful black and black and white cats we have that are desperate for a loving home,”says Tanya Knox, senior cat care assistant.

To find out more about adopting a cat like Elliot from

CATS PROTECTION’S FERNDOWN HOMING CENTRE please call on 03000 120175. Alternatively, visit the centre’s website at www.ferndown.cats.org.uk.

MAY DAY

My mum is proud to recall the year she was Maid of Honour to the May Queen. We have a photo of her and several other young girls, surrounding the May Queen who is wearing a flowing white gown and coronet of flowers. My own memories of May Day celebrations are less regal. I remember clutching a coloured ribbon attached to a maypole and weaving in and out of other children to make pretty patterns for our parents to watch and enjoy. This traditional image of May Day, which in Pagan times celebrated the completion of seeding and springtime fertility with village fetes and community gathering, has little to do with why May 1st is celebrated in Britain today, and why it is recognised internationally as a public holiday.

May Day is International Workers Day, and its history is a little more colourful than the ribbons of the maypole or the handkerchiefs waved around by Morris Dancers!

eight hours rest.” By the late 1800s, Socialist movements in both Britain and the USA were working towards the same end: an eight hour working day. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in the US proclaimed that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1st 1886.” Without the backing of the government or businesses, this ideal was not realised, so when the day arrived 300,000 workers walked off their jobs in protest. Strikes, picket lines, beatings, shootings, rock throwing and bombings followed, and finally major progress was made in 1914 when the Ford Motor Company cut its standard work day to eight hours, whilst also doubling their workers’ pay. Amazingly, productivity increased significantly and profit margins doubled within two years. This encouraged other companies to follow suit. In the UK the Labour government declared May 1st a bank holiday in 1978 and it has been used regularly by protest groups to fight for their cause, especially for workers and their rights. In 2011 the Tories made attempts to scrap May Day and move the bank holiday to October, but for now it remains in place and an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of all those who fought to secure better working hours and conditions for us all!

The late nineteenth century saw employees working 10-18 hour days in unsafe and difficult conditions. Capitalist factory owners, keen to maximise their output, kept them running as many hours as possible with a “sun up to sun down” working day. Death and injury were common. An early British Socialist reformer, Robert Owen, campaigned for the work day to be divided into thirds, coining in 1817 the phrase; “Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, 34 • Christchurch Eye • May 2016

BETTY BLUE EYES PLAYS AT THE REGENT CENTRE

It’s 1947 with rationing very much in force and austerity the watchword of the day. Despite Prime Minister Clement Atlee promising “fair shares for all” the residents of Shepardsford in Yorkshire are finding that is far from the truth. This situation forms the setting for the latest musical being staged by Christchurch-based theatre group, Theatre 2000, “Betty Blue Eyes” at the Regent Centre, Christchurch from 19 to 21 May 2016. The musical is based on a film called “A Private Function” with a screenplay by Alan Bennett and starring Maggie Smith and Michael Palin which appeared on our screens in 1985. It was adapted for the stage in 2011 by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman with music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe who had just completed writing extra songs for the stage version of “Mary Poppins”. The musical “Betty Blue Eyes”, full of glorious melodies and great comic moments, first saw the light of day in the West End where it starred Sarah Lancashire and Reese Shearsmith. The show is produced by Paul Bower, directed by Frank Ewins, choreographed by Angie Broomfield with musical direction by Lee Marchant. A great ensemble of actors, singers and dancers complete the cast in supporting roles. Performances start at 7.30pm from 19 to 21 May with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 21 May. Tickets are available online at www.regentcentre.co.uk by phone on 01202 499199 or in person at the Regent Centre box office priced £15, concessions £14.

BUS STOPS IN CHRISTCHURCH GET A MAJOR MAKEOVER

Bus stops in Christchurch have had a major makeover thanks to a £600,000 investment programme by the Local Sustainable Transport Funds (LSTF). Passengers can now enjoy smart revamped stops and shelters, many with real-time passenger information displays as well as raised kerbs to allow for easy access without any steps to climb.

Many of the bus stops have also been extended to allow for today’s modern buses and reduce possible build-ups of traffic whilst they stop. New high quality poles, flags and timetable cases have also been installed at 46 stops in Christchurch.

The works are part of a £15 million package from the Department of Transport to enhance sustainable transport in Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole by improving local bus, rail, walking and cycling alternatives. It is hoped that the improvements will help reduce congestion and encourage more people to use public transport. Cllr Colin Jamieson, Cabinet member for economy and growth at Dorset County Council, said: “We want passengers to have the best possible journey, from the moment they arrive at the bus stop.” “The new and revamped stops will help ensure people can access public transport more easily, and be better informed of real departure times so they know if the bus is on-time or delayed for any reason.”

“The raised kerbs also allow wheelchair users and those who find walking difficult to board the bus at ground level, without a step to mount. It’s great to see the improvements that have been made.”

Christchurch Citizens Association The merry month of May – well we hope so after the topsy-turvy weather of last month.

As mentioned in our last article, the litterbins on the Quay have been removed for a trial period. So far this has proved to be very unsuccessful. The public are now using the dog waste bins for their rubbish and these are overflowing. We will be asking the council these questions: How long do they intend for this TRIAL to last. The cost to ratepayers for a) the removal and hopefully replacement of the bins b) the cost of notices c) the cost (as we understand it) of extra patrolling, or will this come from fines, and who other than councillors Nottage and Phipps instigated this? The Queens 90th birthday! Will you be holding a street party? Please watch for further information as we will be asking if there will be a charge for road closures. Hopefully this will be free as in the past. A subject of EXTREME IMPORTANCE is the restructuring of Christchurch. Should we join Bournemouth and Poole and loose control of our planning etc? Or should we join with Dorset for the advantage of claiming government funds for large projects but still keep our own identity? With so many serious projects on the town agenda we need more members to make their views and ideas known to us, and more people will give a stronger voice to keep Christchurch an ideal place for us to all enjoy. The membership cost is just £2 per household per year. This can be collected if you phone 01202 486151 or email us. We can then send you agendas and information.

We welcome Mr Colin Dewsnap as our new chairman and new elected committee members. The next meeting will be on Monday May 9th at 7.30pm in Druitt Hall.

‘£30,000 OFF THE ASKING PRICE OF APARTMENT OF THE MONTH AND WE’LL PAY YOUR SERVICE CHARGES FOR 2 YEARS’ SAYS RENAISSANCE RETIREMENT

A local retirement company has some great news for people looking to buy a luxury apartment in Christchurch this month. The price of its Apartment of the Month has been dropped to £250,000 from £280,000 and the company is also offering to pay the potential buyers’ apartment service charges for two years.

The unprecedented offer has been made by Renaissance Retirement at its Fleur-de-Lis apartments in the centre of Christchurch – thought to be the best location in Dorset for retirement living. “With now only a few remaining apartments left and these new incentives, we expect an increased amount of interest and last chance for buyers to secure their new home,” said Matt Smith, sales manager at Renaissance Retirement.

“There are some excellent deals on some of the remaining apartments starting with £30,000 off apartment of the month. We are offering an attractive alternative for people worried about paying the service charges once they’ve moved in. “Our new promotion gives potential owners the chance to enjoy two years free without service charges and experience an exceptional level of retirement living here at Fleur-de-Lis Christchurch. It’s a unique experience plus lifestyle, which we are confident people will fall in love with and reserve.

“With 75% of apartments sold we are nearing the majority of our apartments becoming occupied and in addition drawing up some very special deals on select apartments.” Potential buyers are being attracted to our Christchurch development for a number of reasons. The convenient location centered in the heart of this historic town, is a stone throw away from the high street and yet has the tranquility of Druitt gardens nestled behind. The Renaissance team will also be on hand to give private accompanied tours of the development throughout each afternoon. To register your interest in attending, please call our on-site Sales Consultant Cheryl on 01202 486432 or email christchurch@ renaissancegroup.co.uk See www.renaissancegroup.co.uk for more information.

NATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

The week is promoted by Living Streets who provide classroom packs and ideas for activities to encourage more children to safely walk to school. It’s estimated that only half of 7-10 year olds do the recommended one hour exercise per day and studies suggest that many children are obese or overweight when they leave primary school. Encouraging children to walk to school not only helps them to stay trim, but also reduces the risk of heart conditions and other diseases in later life, and means that they are more alert in the classroom on a day-today basis.

National Walk to School Week

takes place from

16th -20th May

Walking is also better for the environment as it reduces congestion and pollution. Fewer cars and parking outside schools also means there is a reduced chance of accidents and injuries. Many children find it fun to walk to school with their parents or friends and look out for particular things along their route. Observation sheets are available which provide an opportunity to tick off things seen along the way, such as a church, shop, or petrol station. For those who can’t walk to school with a relative, being part of a walkingbus may offer a solution. Children walk with volunteers in a group along a designated route, dropping off passengers at schools along the way. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Teen Eye Hello!

I have been busy practising my driving as my test is this month. I am very excited but also Emily slightly nervous as the test centre has moved to Poole where I am less familiar with the roads. Hopefully if I practice the test routes often I will feel more confident for the Big Day. Fingers crossed I pass!!! Now the weather is (slightly) warming up, I’m looking forward to having a go at Paddleboarding. The ‘Ladies That Paddle Christchurch’ group meet weekly at Christchurch Quay to explore the river. There is no charge if you have your own board and all are welcome; more details can be found on their facebook page (just tap in Ladies that Paddle Christchurch). Hopefully I will find that I have a good sense of balance and will remain out of the water!

TELEPHONE

It is very exciting that I only have one more month left of revision before my A2 exams in June. I can’t wait to finish and have such a long summer ahead of me. The fact I go on holiday the weekend after my exams finish is really helping me get through all the work I have to do to prepare myself. Having a few events such as the Soundclash Festival this month will give me a welcome break from revising.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? BRING ON THE BIOLOGICAL WARFARE!

I’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters.

Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground.

46 • Christchurch Eye • May 2016

Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment.

Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

CHRISTCHURCH SCOUT AND GUIDE BAND

Brett Jones

Christchurch Scouting with Christchurch Guides are very proud to have their own band. There was a time when most towns would have a Scout band but now there are few left. Even Bournemouth’s band recently closed down. Our band started in 1972 and is still going strong 44 years later. The band can be seen at a number of occasions in Christchurch and the surrounding areas. Last month they of course led the parade at our St George’s Day celebration, which I hope you all enjoyed. The Band Master is Roger Milton and he and his team have been looking after the Band since 1974. One of their highlights was playing for Her Majesty the Queen at Kings Park in Bournemouth in 2004.

The Band also led the parade in Dorchester, for the Scouts centenary celebrations in 2007. The Band gives our Scouts and Guides the opportunity to learn an instrument and play in public. To continue this tradition we are always looking for helpers and instructors to teach the young people. We also need more Scouts and Guides to join; it is another exciting element to scouting and an opportunity to learn a new skill. The Band’s main instruments are the drums, bugle and bell lyres but they are always willing to add new instruments to the overall sound and experiences for the young people. If you would like to help or know a young person between 8 and 18 who would like to join the band (and scouting if they are not members already) then please email me at the normal email address below or email band@christchurchscouts.org.uk. Christchurch Detachment Dorset Army Cadet Force (ACF)

Another bumper month of things going on here at Christchurch ACF: We had our Annual Inspection and were proud to host the Deputy Commandant Lt Col Williams at the Detachment for the evening where he inspected the cadets, observed lessons and even joined in a presentation about a recent WW1 Battlefield tour to Ypres Cdt’s Taylor and Bastable attended. He was full of praise for the effort all the cadets put into their turnout, stating: “The cadets are impressively and immaculately turned out and are a credit to themselves and the detachment. He then went on to present our most recent DofE Bronze Award to L/Cpl Roberts, adding “This shows the levels of commitment young people can show in gaining further qualifications during their time in the ACF – Congratulations to L/Cpl Roberts for working hard to achieve this.

L/Cpl Roberts receives his Bronze DofE Award from Lt Col Williams. RSM Cranham along with Lt Barker fly the flag for Dorset ACF in Ballykinler

You may remember a couple of months ago I asked for ideas for volunteer projects our cadets could take part in as part of the National Community Week (18-24 April) and I’m pleased to say that we had a response via one of our parents who put us in touch with Somerfield Primary School. At the time of writing we are planning on joining them on the weekend of 23-24 April to help clear an old pond area and help turn it into a garden and also paint some fencing and new sheds. The Cadets are really looking forward to getting stuck in and helping out. More on this next month. Finally: RSM Cranham joined our County DofE Officer Lt Barker in representing Dorset ACF at a prestigious DofE 60th Anniversary Event in Ballykinler, Northern Ireland. It was a week of teamwork, leadership and communication training alongside some great fun activities to challenge everyone involved.

You may have noticed our new office in Barrack Road in the car park by Fountains Roundabout. Having been a ‘virtual’ organisation for some years, we had the use of an office in the Citizen’s Advice Bureau for some time before moving to the old Steam Café when it became available late last year. Mum’s the Word Spring cleaning? Utterly boring? Probably. But I still find myself doing it and at the end being quietly a little Natasha beside myself, bordering on giddy. And then I want no one to step foot in my house for at least a week so I can just sit and marvel in it. Alone. Alongside the annual, I mean quarterly spring-clean I’ve been trying the art of ‘decluttering’. Sorting through the drawer of wires with no plugs and random odd toothbrushes with no owner, I have found this has actually been a massive victory. I would recommend it to anyone, who could do with not owning shares in storage baskets! If you have or do have a good old sort out, there are many places that will happily take your old things, from the obvious local charity shops, to getting in touch with local preschools who could make use of those 12 extra pairs of princess shoes. If you have any run down pieces of furniture that you’re close to throwing, you can try one of Thomas and Lucia’s Annie Sloan Paint Workshops, and learn how to make your old drawers worthy of linen napkins rather than baby wipes. However, if you have items that just don’t cut the mustard for you anymore, you can always get in touch with Dorset Reclaim, a non-profit charity who collect for free from Christchurch and sell the items to people who are on smaller incomes and for whom shop prices are often too high. They will take nearly anything from beds to cookers, just go to their website (www.dorsetreclaim.org.uk) to see how to donate. So there’s just a few little ideas on how to reduce, reuse, recycle! I’m off to get the rubber gloves (and switch off Bob The Builder...)

NEW NHS SERVICES FOR CHRISTCHURCH!

The Grove Surgery will be shortly be relocating to brand new premises at the Christchurch Hospital site on Fairmile Road. We are very much looking forward to moving into our custom built surgery which will be at the cutting edge of the modern NHS. We are also delighted that our new premises will give us the opportunity to offer additional clinical services for the benefit of all our patients.

The move is currently scheduled for the weekend of 28-30 May, which means that our last day in our current premises at 83 The Grove will be Friday 27 May. We will then start operating from our new premises at 08.30 on Tuesday 31 May following the bank holiday - our full address will be The Grove Surgery, Fairmile Road, Fairmile, Christchurch BH23 2FQ. We intend to retain our current telephone and fax numbers. We are delighted that all of our current team will be coming with us to our new surgery, and we will all be working together to ensure a seamless transition to the new site for all of our patients. Parking will be free of charge in the hospital car parks for patients visiting the surgery, with tickets available from reception to be displayed in vehicles.

Please keep checking the ‘Current News’ section of the surgery website – www.thegrovesurgery.co.uk – for updates and further information about the move. As with any new project there is always the potential for last minute hiccups, and we will continually update the website to reflect the current position. You are also welcome to contact us should you have any questions about the new surgery. We are all very excited about the move and the opportunities it will provide, and we look forward to welcoming our first patients through the doors of our brand new surgery on Tuesday 31 May! John Gregson - Practice Manager
