Dear Reader It’s June and it’s hard to believe that we’re almost half way through 2016. The longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, falls on 20th June when we can enjoy a full 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight.

So, what’s going on in our lovely village this month? On Saturday 4th June Christchurch Cancer Research UK are holding a charity cream tea afternoon in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday at The Methodist Hall on Lymington Road. As well as homemade scones and tea there will be a hat competition, entertainment and a raffle. For more details about how to book your ticket see page 8. It’s also the season of Summer Fayres, and St Mark Primary School on Greenways will be hosting theirs on Saturday 25th June from 11am-1.30pm, please go along and support our local school children. Oh and don’t forget it’s Father’s Day on Sunday 19th… spoil the father in your life with a lovely lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants in the village, don’t forget to book as it’s sure to be a busy day!

Local History by Len Wigg - Ancient sounds still audible in Christchurch A recent news item was that `Big Ben’ in London will soon be silent while necessary repairs are made to its home in the tower of the Houses of Parliament. Surely Westminster will sound different then! The bell of `Big Ben’ is a youngster, being cast in 1858, compared with two bells in Christchurch Priory tower. These were cast in the reign of King Edward III by Edward Rufford in Bedfordshire in 1370. These are both large, tenor bells, said to be the two oldest bells in the country still in regular use. The larger weighs about 30cwt (1500Kg). They have been ringing here for more than 600 years, along with others from 18th 20th centuries! Before 1539 bells were used to call the Augustinian Canons living in the Priory to gather in the Great Quire to sing and say Psalms and prayers, which comprised the Daily Office. Commonly it began at midnight, daybreak, mid-morning, noon, mid-afternoon and sunset. When the first bells arrived they were hung in the room above the North Porch. Marks of the sloping louvers, which allowed the sound out but prevented rain blowing in, are still visible by the sides of the present windows. Somehow the bells were moved up into the present tower around 1480. Imagine what hard work that would have been, and 7 bells were mentioned in 1540. The illustration shows the smallest bell Treble A cast in 1932 weighing 5cwt, (approximately 255Kg). Notice the solid oak frame, also the large wheel attached to the `headstock’. In order to have precise control over when a bell sounds, they are pulled into a `mouth up’ position just off top centre from the ringing chamber below. When the

bell rope is pulled they rotate to just off centre on the other side. It is like going from 1 o’clock to 11 o’clock anticlockwise, travelling about 380 degrees. When the sequence keeps altering it is called ‘change ringing’. In many changes the tenor rings last - like a punctuation mark at the end of a phrase. A sequence might be: 123456, 213546, 231456, 324156, 342516, 435216, 453126...bell 1 is moving down the scale, while in the second round bell 4 is moving up. Thereafter each bell rings first twice in successive rounds and twice next to the tenor bell 6, when it starts to climb the scale. We will all have an opportunity to hear something like this as part of the Music and Art Festival at the Priory, which commences on Sunday June 12th. A celebratory Quarter Peal will be rung that afternoon at 17:30, under the direction of Tim Martin, the Tower Captain. Earlier in the day there will be a Festival Eucharist at 9:30; Festival Matins at 11:30; the Highcliffe Youth Choir will sing at 15:00; and at 18:30 the Priory Choirs will be joined by the choirs of Romsey Abbey, Wimborne Minster and St. Peter’s Bournemouth for Choral Evensong. The summer is upon us and we have had some fantastic days already, with plenty of opportunity to head to the beach and fill up on ice-cream and seafood.

The perfect stop enroute is at the new and much enlarged Paddle who have extended into the Scullery offering the same great fresh food and lovely relaxed surroundings we’re used to. They didn’t mess around and swiftly opened last month and will also shortly be opening the old For Heavens Shake premises as well, with delicious bits to take away. I was also pleased to meet the new owners of Blue Sky Deli, Tom and Sharon, who are absolutely lovely and cooking up beautiful deli treats to eat in or take away. You can always enjoy their food in the garden which is a real sun trap. Sadly, Southern Wines has closed but has already been taken up by new tenants and should be due to open soon, the same is true for the old fruit and vegetable shop and hopefully that will be opening soon as well. A new dress shop is due to open at the other end of the High Street. It’s so nice to see the empty shops being taken over and new, fresh businesses coming in. Work is still continuing on the High Street with various brightening up efforts in progress. The HCP (Highcliffe Centre Partnership) submitted two petitions to the Dorset County Council, one requesting pavement resurfacing and the other requesting a restriction on HGVs passing through the Village. These are work in progress, but with the great support received from local residents hopefully we will see some action. You may have noticed that the recycling bins have been moved from Wortley Road car park, overall it was deemed that the fly tipping was getting to such a level it was becoming more of a nuisance and eyesore than it was a useful facility. Apparently, following the introduction of roadside recycling the facility had been due to be removed several years ago anyway. It is a much more pleasant welcome to the village now it has to be said. So all in all onwards and upwards and have a great summer from all the Traders!

Sailing Clubs and little boats don’t like wild, lashing storms, they are dangerous and they break things. This Spring, as if to prove a point, storms Imogen and Katie came calling and put paid to both our last Icicle race and our Easter Cup and, as a parting gift, ripped through the boat park with a ferocity that left a trail of upturned carnage.
So, the calm warmth of May has been certainly most welcome down at Mudeford Quay and we are all pleased to see Christchurch Harbour emerging from its early Spring battering unscathed and beckoning the watersports lovers once more. For Highcliffe SC, with our clubhouse refurbishment complete, inside and out, we are ready to welcome our first important race visitors of the year. We are honoured at Highcliffe SC to be hosting the D-ZERO NATIONAL SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS from 24th – 26th June 2016.
D-Zeros are a bit like turbo charged Laser 1s and should make for great spectator viewing. We hope to have over 50 sailors compete from all around the UK in this prestigious event. Everyone is welcome to come to Mudeford Quay and watch, bring your binoculars! It has also been a great pleasure this month to welcome back to the club all the ‘Ladies That Launch’. This enthusiastic group of women sailors was formed several years ago as a ladies-only group designed to get women out onto the water in a safe and relaxed environment. The evenings, run by qualified trainers, take place once or twice a month over the spring/summer season and always result in laughter, frivolity and basically a jolly good time. Finally, the interclub derby between Highcliffe SC and Christchurch SC has kicked off again for 2016. As the current titleholders, we have a trophy to defend but after the first 2 races, it appears the CSC are keen to get it back in their cabinet. The new Living Wage has now come into effect and could have significant implications for Christchurch. I remember a remarkable survey a few years ago put Christchurch near the top of a league of ‘deprived areas’. This was based on our relatively high cost of living but the fact that our main employment is in tourism and care services. Both industries are notorious for their low pay. As a result, the surprise announcement by the Chancellor last summer that the minimum wage would be increased to a ‘living wage’ of £7.20 per hour (and over the next few years to £9.00 per hour) is likely to be a boon to many Christchurch workers. However, care homes in particular fear that they are going to find it hard to cope with the increase in costs. Their wage bills will be going up over 10% since this time last year and there is a worry it could make some economically unviable. The recent closure of Pinebeach Nursing Home in Friars Cliff for redevelopment has been a loss to the area and there is a concern that other local homes could now be pushed into financial difficulties. Many care home residents are reliant on local authority funding, and the cut backs already affecting councils means it is unlikely they will be unable to increase payments by as much as is needed. Other care home residents are private paying and are likely to see a rise in fees, predicted to be as much as 10%. This would put the average cost of a care home at £743 per month, although some local homes are already significantly more than that. That figure works out as £38,636 per annum which is more than sending a child to a private school like Canford or Eton!

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 17 - The End of the Road
“All good things (must) come to an end.” Sadly, after almost 18 months writing about Christchurch’s blue plaques, I’ve come to the last, the former trolleybus turntable in Wick Lane (19 on our map). If one plaque symbolises journey’s end, this is the one. Perhaps Nelly Furtado had it in mind when she released her song of the same name in 2006. That’s, “All Good Things (Come to an End)”, not, “The Trolleybus Turntable.”
The plaque sits above an archway, leading into a residential development. Through its gates can be glimpsed the remains of that turntable, which came into operation when trolleybuses replaced trams in 1936. Journey’s end? Well, the turntable marked the terminus for those trolleybuses, which had to be turned, so that they could return to Bournemouth, from whence they’d come. There is uniqueness too (maybe), for the plaque states that this is ‘believed to be the only one left in the country’. There were never very many worldwide, possibly just four. It is believed there was only one other in the UK (Huddersfield), with turntables also in Germany and Mexico.
The turntable was in the yard of the onetime Dolphin Hotel in Church Street, subsequently demolished. Turning the trolleybus on the turntable’s grooves was no mean feat, being accomplished manually by putting one’s back into it (or possibly ‘backside’). The era of the trolleybus was fairly short-lived, itself consigned to history in 1969.

Just a few assorted facts about trolleybuses then. They’re electric buses that draw power from overhead wires, using two wires and trolley poles. They first appeared in the early-1880s Stephen (Berlin), with Leeds and Bradford leading the way in Britain in 1911. The number of trolleybus systems peaked at around 800; the number today is around 300-400 in over 40 countries.
Finishing the town’s blue plaques gives me one last opportunity to commend the Christchurch History Society. Without its work there would have been no ‘Millennium Blue Plaques’ for me to take you round. The society continues to promote the town’s history and heritage and, equally importantly, welcomes interlopers such as me, who’ve started writing and talking about Christchurch only recently. It also gave me my first engagement as a public speaker in January 2014, for which I’m grateful. It’s nice we have a local History Society that’s not a ‘closed shop’. And what next for me? Well, my informants tell me my series on blue plaques has been a hit with the Christchurch fraternity, so we’ve decided to follow up with a series on ‘other’ plaques, which are dotted around the borough, rather than just illuminating the historic town centre. Be prepared for tales of kings, wars, witches and furnituremakers. It’s all coming your way.

Christchurch Housing Society has been a major provider of care and accommodation services to older people in Christchurch and beyond since 1946.
As a not-for-profit charitable organisation it has at its heart the promotion of the health and welfare of people over 60 years of age, and owns over 600 flats for rent across the conurbation. It also owns and runs Silverways Nursing Home in Highcliffe and Avondene Residential Care Home in Mudeford. Housing developments include the Greystones Estate in Highcliffe, with its stunning views across the Solent to the Needles, and the Homelands Estate, tranquilly set on the banks of the River Stour in Christchurch.

Highcliffe-on-Sea Rotary Club
Your local Rotary Club has been active within the Highcliffe community during its current fiscal year, holding weekly Susan meetings to gather, create and continue a large variety of fundraising and social events. One of Rotary’s recent weekly meetings varied its format and Rotarians treated their partners to a Charity Jazz Concert and Social Supper at Hoburne Bashley in New Milton. Another of last month’s events, which incorporated spouses and guests, was the Mike Ackling Annual Charity Golf Day played at Highcliffe Castle Golf Club. After a round of entertaining golf, offering an incentive prize of a motorcar for a Hole-in-One, a 3 course meal was enjoyed by a full compliment of patrons, donating the combined proceeds to Highcliffe Rotary’s President, Bob Salter’s chosen charity, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Rotary’s annual ‘Kids Out’ will be taking place at Paulton’s Park and Highcliffe Rotary Club will, as in past years, be taking Special Needs children from Highcliffe School, St Mark’s Primary School and Christchurch Primary School. The children and accompanying teachers, parents and Rotarians will be taken to the theme park by coach for the day. Paulton’s Park is taken over entirely by Rotary district 1110, where they all enjoy the rides and attractions which pauses only at lunchtime for picnic refreshments provided by Rotary, before a coach ride returns everyone to their respective schools in time for normal closing. Last year we experienced glorious sunshine which added to its delight and we are certainly hoping for more of the same. Finalising a successful year of fund raising and service to the local community, our President will be handing over monies raised to recipients at a Presentations Evening at Highcliffe Castle Golf Club. Rotarians, spouses and partners, whose support and assistance play a large part in Rotary’s continuing success, always enjoy attending these functions to see their year’s efforts come to fruition. MEET BYNX THE OLDER CAT
Bynx is an older cat in desperate need of a home and has been sadly overlooked. He is a gentle giant who enjoys human company and is very good with children over 6. Bynx is a friendly cat who actively seeks attention and would make a fantastic companion for most households.

Tanya Knox, senior cat care assistant, said: “It is a shame because older cats have a lot to offer. They tend to stay closer to home so make great companions, their characters are fully formed so you know what sort of cat you’re getting and they’re less likely to scale the curtains or knock your ornaments off the shelf! The centre says improvements in cat care have greatly raised the life expectancy and quality of life for cats across the UK, and many household moggies are now living into their late teens and early 20s in good health.
However, the bad news is that owners still appear to choose a cute, fluffy kitten over an older cat and with kitten season now underway, this issue becomes even more of a problem.

Teen Eye Hi Everyone,
May has been a very long month of lots of revision for exams. It is especially hard to stay motivated to revise with the weather improving so Emily much; you just want to be out in the sunshine! I managed to pass my driving test this month too, which is extremely exciting. My test was in Poole and I was driving for around 40 minutes. It was more difficult as I was less familiar with the roads than I would be in Bournemouth but the examiner was really nice which helped my nerves. I am lucky enough to already have my own car, so it was very strange to be able to go straight off driving on my own.
Another highlight of last month was the Christchurch Food Festival. It was such a lovely sunny weekend and The High Street and The Quay were packed with people enjoying the food and atmosphere. We tried a few new foods, enjoyed the market stalls and relaxed on the grass by the river. The Thai food at the Koh Noi Lounge on the Quay was really delicious, I’d not tried Thai food before and I would definitely eat it again. It was great to eat outdoors in the sunshine; summer is on its way. The Chilly Wizard ice cream shop on the corner of Saxon Square has also reopened for the summer season. There was a long queue due to the popularity of the ice cream but it was well worth the wait. I had Raspberry Ripple flavour, which was particularly nice on a hot day!

Coming to The Regent Centre this month is the remake of the well-known Disney classic The Jungle Book. The film is shown multiple times throughout June at the very reasonable price of £5 for children and £6 for adults. The film has been one of the highest rated movies of 2016 and is said to feature amazing special effects. This would be a great afternoon out or revision break treat with your friends or family! HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? THE DIFFICULT PATCH
Every garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slugwatch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions. Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris.
Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade

is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention.
Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with it’s red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well.
Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed.

Mum’s the Word I love to get out and try new hobbies or experiences, so lately I’ve been having a look at opportunities that may get me out of the house and ignite a new interest or skill.

Whilst searching, I came across a few local classes that are held in Christchurch, so no need to start travelling far and perhaps even throw in an evening walk too.
The company Dorset Art Courses, run classes held at the Christchurch Rowing Club, a great place to get the creative juices flowing, they offer a variety of art techniques to learn, and start from beginner level too. As well as art courses, for something more energetic, our local Rowing Club offer an adult rowing course over two days where you can learn all the basics, including safety, technique and rowing as part of a team. Prices and times and any other information can all be found on their website www.christchurchrowingclub.co.uk I can feel my biceps twitching already. For something a little more jazzy and musical, Cosmopolitan-dance, a local dance school run beginner weekly classes at the Priory Hall, they teach the foxtrot and waltz amongst others and I can hear a silver pair of glittery shoes calling my name... All details of class times and prices can be found by looking on their website www.cosmopolitan-dance.co.uk So there are a few ideas to get out and try this summer, if none of those strike a cord, a beautiful bike ride to the beach with a picnic should also do the trick. Summer Sausage Rolls
Makes 20 Rolls INGREDIENTS
2 large skinless chicken breast 1 garlic clove, crushed 3 rashers streaky bacon, thinly sliced 4 sundried tomato, chopped handful basil leaves, chopped 375g/13oz pack ready-rolled puff pastry flour for dusting 1 egg yolk, beaten 25g sesame seeds
METHOD
Whizz the chicken and garlic in a processor until the chicken is minced. Tip in the bacon, sundried tomatoes and basil. Pulse for 5 secs to just mix through. Season well. Roll the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut in half lengthways. Spread half the chicken mixture along the middle of one of the pastry strips, then roll up the pastry, pinching the ends together to seal. Using a sharp knife, cut into 2.5cm long pieces. Repeat with the remaining pastry strip. Can be frozen, uncooked, for up to 1 month. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Place the rolls on a large baking sheet. Brush with the egg, then sprinkle with seeds. Bake for 20 mins until golden.
