Dear Reader

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas. If you’re thinking of trying Cheryl something new this coming year then turn to page 12 where you’ll find lots of local Clubs, Classes, Groups & Societies. There’s something to suit almost anyone going on in our busy little town so hopefully you’ll find something that interests you. Personally, I love a bit of dancing and I’ve not been in a while so I shall be making every effort to start up again this month as I not only enjoy it but it’s a great way to keep fit too! I’d like to introduce a new contributor to our magazine this month, Len Wigg, who will now be writing our Local History column. A very warm welcome to you Len. So what else is new here at Local Eye HQ? Well we’ve ventured over the river and we are now producing a Southbourne Eye magazine. It’s been very exciting working with, and getting to know our neighbours and we are very much looking forward to seeing the new magazine hot off the press!

Cheryl

Local History

by Len Wigg

- Hope for Many in 1816

1816 was a significant year for some families in and around Christchurch. It saw the arrival here of a new minister for the Congregational Church in Millhams Street. He was Rev. Daniel Gunn, who during the 22 years of his Ministry, changed the educational opportunities of thousands of young people This was through the Sunday School, which his predecessor Rev William Hopkins (minister 1797-1816) had started in a small way. Daniel was born in Wick in the north of Scotland, which since 1696 had a law requiring every parish to appoint a school master. Pauper children could be educated at the expense of the parish and even progress onto secondary education, thanks to them also contributing to scholarship funds. So the Presbyterian Church had educated members able to read the Bible and hymnbook. Daniel was able to study at Edinburgh High School. He duly became a minister and with 16 years of experience, he arrived here in 1816 for a one year trial. There was a school for boys in St Michael’s Loft at the Priory, which Phil Tate described in May 2015. We can see from a letter the parents sent in 1774, complaining about the teacher, that they were tradesmen – blacksmith, clothier, shipwright, joiner etc. Daniel wished to give education to poorer children as he had seen it in Scotland; those who ran errands, delivered goods, were scullery maids, worked on the land weeding crops or scaring birds away. They only had a break on a Sunday, if that. Influenced by the Quaker Joseph Lancaster, who had reformed school discipline by a system of honours and humiliation,

and who used original methods of learning to write and calculate using a slate and chalk pencil. Also the Anglican Dr Bell, had pioneered a system of teaching by one master, plus monitors drawn from the pupils themselves. Monitors were each responsible for ten children. Thus one master, several adult assistants plus monitors could teach hundreds of children. Boys and girls assembled by 9am on Sunday morning, each carrying a bag with hymnbook and Scriptures. The monitors carried red bags and the scholars green ones. School began with a hymn and a brief prayer. Lessons continued to 10:15am, when all marched into church for the service. At the end, the Minister from the pulpit asked each head monitor if there had been any disorderly conduct and if so the offender was rebuked publically. Classes resumed at 1:30 pm, when Mr Gunn examined each class in turn on the lessons that had been taught in the morning. They all attended the afternoon service at 3pm. The lessons for the next week were prepared by Mr Gunn, and explained to the adult helpers and monitors in a meeting from 5pm to 6:20pm, before the evening service at 6:30pm. The school became famous and visitors included the statesman Lord John Russell as well as some Americans. Often there were 400+ children attending. The Sunday School Union examiner in 1830 reported that `the whole aspect filled him with satisfaction and he was struck by the cheerful countenances, the modest and respectful behaviour of the children in the streets’. This is quite a tribute to the vision and energy of Daniel Gunn.

HIGHCLIFFE RESIDENTS GIVE THEIR VIEWS ON IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED TO THEIR HIGH STREET Almost 300 Highcliffe residents have given their views on what they think is needed to improve their High Street. Highcliffe Centre Partnership, the action group made up of local residents volunteering their time and money, conducted an online survey to collect feedback to understand current perceptions, ideas, opinions and views on the future of Highcliffe.

People were asked to rate the High Street from one to five stars, with five being the highest. The overall average rating was two stars indicating the overwhelming agreement that something needs to be done about it. The results of the initial questionnaire pointed to five key themes:

Environment, Traffic management, Public transport Pavements and Car park charges.

Malcolm Mawbey, Chairman of the Highcliffe Centre Partnership, said: “We were very encouraged by the number of responses we received to our survey. What we intend to do now is to provide a series of recommendations which focus on the responses from people who live, work and shop in Highcliffe.

“Some of the recommendations are bound to be easier to achieve than others, but we will be lobbying Christchurch Borough and Dorset County councils to see if we can influence decisions on issues such as car park charges and traffic management.”

To encourage people to get involved the initial questionnaire was sponsored by local donors Hoburne Holiday Parks, Highcliffe Castle, Skylight Kitchen, Lifestyle Concepts and Comojo. Prizes were presented to the winners by Malcolm Mawbey.

Highcliffe Centre Partnership now need to establish the priorities of these themes. If Highcliffe residents are interested in influencing the future of their high street or just wish to have their say, they need to complete a form by going to www.reactn.com and typing in Highcliffe.

Business Column

Will 2016 see the buy-to-let bubble burst? This is heresy to some; estate and letting agents and those heavily invested in such properties will deny the Peter possibility of a downturn. But that is the nature of investment bubbles. Christchurch and Highcliffe are no exception to the buy-to-let phenomena. Whilst more up-market properties may take time to sell, those at the lower end are being snapped up as they go on the market. My conveyancing solicitor colleagues are amazed how many purchasers of such properties are now older would-be landlords. Investment bubbles arise when people invest large sums because others are doing so without the experience or knowledge of what is really involved. Whilst buy-to-let sounds easy, in truth it’s hard work. Finding tenants, dealing with property issues and coping with bad tenants is tough. Further, the Government now sees landlords as an easy untapped tax target. First there are the new tax rules coming into effect in 2017 which reduce tax relief on mortgage payments – a new rule that is little understood but will have a significant effect on landlord’s incomes. More immediate is the stamp duty hike from April 2016. This is much easier to understand as it means the payment of several thousand pounds more if the purchase is after 1st April. My conveyancing colleagues are already receiving enquiries from anxious potential purchasers desperate to proceed quickly. The last time a significant stamp duty change occurred there was a market spike and house price fell soon after. There are only so many good tenants out there looking to rent and whether it be over supply, the effect of adverse tax rules or the long anticipated interest rate increase that causes the bubble to burst, my fear is that 2016 could be the year that sees it happen. If you are thinking about investing yourself, my advice is to proceed with caution.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 12 - A Pride of Plaques

Is there a collective noun for plaques? You know, like a herd of cattle, or a catastrophe of ‘oiks’. Let’s invent one. A pride of plaques works well, like a pride of lions. If one building in Christchurch is in need of such phraseology it is the Town Hall (1746), which is liberally covered in plaques (I think I counted six the last time I looked). Our town hall has been about a bit. The earliest one (Old Tolsey) has gone and the current building has moved, having once sat overlooking the original market square at the junction of High Street and Castle Street (Ye Olde George territory). The story goes that the Town Hall was proving a right old obstruction there so was dismantled and rebuilt in today’s location in 1860. Christchurch first returned MPs to Parliament (2 of them) in 1571 during the reign of Elizabeth I. Our parliamentary elections would once have been rumbustious affairs, as the ‘hustings’ (where candidates put their case) was erected in front of the Town Hall. When votes were cast, this was done publically amidst scenes that must have been both rowdy and drunken (candidates often bribed voters with beer). The Ballot Act of 1872 brought this to an end, introducing the secret ballot. The town hall building is fairly typical in design with ‘market shelter’ at ground-floor level; ‘open’ today, although enclosed in the past, (and still used for table-top sales), with mayor’s parlour at first-floor level, where the burgesses had meetings in days gone by. Things changed again in 1980 when the new civic offices in Bridge

18 • Highcliffe Eye • January 2016

Street were opened by Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, superseding the council offices, which stretched out behind the old town hall. This remains a traditional focus, for example, each Remembrance Sunday, Stephen when the mayor and dignitaries take the salute on the pavement outside. Saxon Square (1983) is a newish addition in spite of the name. At the rear of the town hall was once a large lecture hall, venue for traditional Victorian entertainments, everything from self-improvement (talks and exhibitions) to magic-lantern shows (forerunner of the movies), plays, musicals and even ventriloquists. ‘Gottle of geer’ anyone? Come 1902 there was a technical school among this lot. All this was swept away and amazing as it may seem, even the old town hall may have been in danger, but thankfully escaped. Oh, and those other plaques? Well, too many to mention them all really, but they include one telling us about the market’s history and another declaring that Christchurch is a Domesday town. If you want to know what the others are, you know what you need to do … Next time: The Red House Museum

Highcliffe-on-Sea Rotary Club

The Shoebox Scheme initiated by North West Rotary clubs in 1994 donated gifts of happiness in the form of shoeboxes containing toys, toiletries, educational items and household goods to children of Eastern Europe, who live in a world of poverty.

Susan

Since then, the scheme has become a national project supported by Rotary clubs, individuals, schools and local business. For many years The Rotary Club of Highcliffe has supported the Shoebox Appeal, with the most generous record of 755 shoeboxes contributed this year, from Highcliffe and St. Mark Junior Schools. Highcliffe School collected a phenomenal 615. Our District has also beaten its record with 26,957 shoeboxes of which 5,935 have already been sent to the Philippines with the balance to be divided between Albania, Montenegro and Moldova. Highcliffe Rotarians volunteered to inspect each shoebox to ensure it didn’t include any prohibited items. Shoeboxes were then categorised into gender and age groups, and repacked into cartons for shipping. Ms Lesley O’Neil, a Highcliffe Business Owner, once again volunteered to help load and drive her van full of boxes to a central collection point, for dispatch abroad.

For many children, it will be their first Christmas present, and it lets them know that somebody, somewhere cares. HELP CREATE A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY IN CHRISTCHURCH National ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions in Christchurch

As part of the national Dementia Friendly Community initiative, Christchurch is working to become a dementiafriendly community to help people living with dementia feel included, understood, respected and supported and confident they can contribute to community life. Becoming a Dementia Friend will help this happen by raising awareness of dementia. Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s initiative which is being rolled out across the country by nationally trained ‘Champions’ who deliver one hour informative and interactive sessions. Being a Dementia Friend is about having an understanding of dementia and the small things we can all do that can make a difference to people living with dementia and those who care for them. Come to a Dementia Friends session and learn a little bit more about what it may feel like to have dementia, the Dementia Friends scheme, and how to get involved to make improvements at home or in the workplace. Only by working together can we build a more understanding and caring community. Christchurch Friendly Community team warmly invites you to attend a ‘Dementia Friends’ session being held locally at Christchurch Library on the High Street this coming January 2016. WHERE: Christchurch Library, High Street, Christchurch WHEN: Thursday 14th and 21st January 2016 5pm - 6pm DURATION: 45 minutes to one hour COST: sessions are free of charge

If you would like to join us or know more, please call 01202 764352 or visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk for more information about Dementia Friends.

Teen Column

Think shutters are expensive?

Happy New Year... I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! I can’t believe it’s already 2016 and Christmas has Emily come and gone. Even more shocking is the fact that our Christmas tree remained vertical and wasn’t pulled down by my kitten, Smudge. He certainly learnt how to unwrap presents, even if it was before Christmas Day! Despite the fact he had his own stocking, Smudge much preferred trying to open my presents than his own. Any empty cardboard box entertained him for hours! Last month I took my Mum to the O2 Bournemouth to see Scouting For Girls. It was a fantastic evening and I hardly had a voice left in the morning after singing ‘She’s So Lovely’ and ‘Heartbeat’ at the top of my voice. Roy Stride was a great entertainer and even left the stage and surprised his fans by appearing in the balcony. I’m really looking forward to going to Wembley Arena to see Rihanna next June and was online at 9am the day the tickets went on sale. Naturally I’m going with my friend who has the same name! I always enjoy a stroll around the Christchurch Market on Mondays where there are a variety of stalls with many gift ideas. It is a good time to take a visit to Chuckles Chippy also in the High Street, which offers both eat in and takeaway options and has amazing chips! They are great to warm you up on a cold winter’s day. This month I have started learning to drive which I am very excited about; hopefully I won’t crash the car as I can’t see my Mum being too happy about that. My Dad has taken me out a few times and we’ve both come back in one piece but as yet I have only driven in a car park! Have a great January, see you next month!

Mum’s the Word The Christmas baubles have been not so safely packed away, the sales are on, and I once again have promised myself I will buy all next years presents in Natasha this year’s sales. I am guessing by the time this is printed I would of bought precisely zero in advance. It’s going on my resolution list anyway. So what has Christchurch got to offer for those looking for a challenge this year? If taking up a new hobby is one of them, there is a wonderful creative knitting group that meet every Wednesday at the Arcado lounge in Christchurch at 7.30pm. It’s for anyone at any level and I’m hoping to get to this one myself. Contact Jo Cox on 01202 482890 for more details. If you’re looking for something you can do from home to kick start your year, how about one of the 800 free short courses provided by the Open University? I have recently started one myself and it’s fantastic. They have everything from accounting to psychology. All you need to do is register with your email address and away you go! Lastly, for a resolution that keeps on giving, take a look at the volunteeringdorset.org.uk website. They have so many opportunities available that will benefit everyone. From a few hours a week to 1 day a month, there is everything from arts and culture to conservation projects looking for helping hands. If New Year’s resolutions aren’t for you, I read about an idea recently called ‘Rememberlution Jars’ (I have no idea if that is even an actual word!) however, I love the concept. The idea is to simply take a fairly large jar, decorate/write whatever you wish on it, and to fill it all year with little snippets from your accomplishments and memories from the year. I personally think this would be a great thing to do with my children, they can see it fill up and feel proud and remember all their great times/achievements from the year. A pebble from a holiday, or a sticker from school work, their own little keepsakes which would be fun to look back on at the end of 2016. So from me, Happy New Year, I’m off to buy my knitting needles…and a jar!

Highcliffe-on-Sea Traders Association Happy New Year!! I hope you’re recovering from the excesses of food and drink that we tend to indulge in over the festive period.

Elodie Stewart Helen

Highcliffe was particularly busy with the Christmas Fayre and a pretty impressive Christmas light arrangement this year with everyone making a great effort to illuminate and cheer up the High Street. Anyway, enough of Christmas past, it’s 2016 and I think that sounds far preferable to 2015 and hopefully it will be a great year for us all. I’m personally very excited as I’m currently mid-move to the area and will be enjoying walking to work each day along the beach, coffee in hand. I really can’t think of a more brilliant commute to work and in such a beautiful spot. I may even occasionally stop at the Cliffhanger to sit and enjoy a bacon sarnie and contemplate the ocean. I hear on the grapevine that 2016 will be ringing the changes in the High Street with not only some new shops appearing but some pretty major revamps of buildings happening. These things do tend to take an awfully long time to come to fruition so I will try to keep you posted via this little segment of anything concrete that’s in the pipeline, never good for a pipeline, concrete! Moving swiftly on…Keep an eye on the Streetlife website for local news and titbits, it’s a great forum and community link. Also check out on Facebook the Lifestyle Concept’s page as they are hosting evenings with interesting talks from an array of different speakers. Even better, why not pop in and say hello to the glamourous girls in there? The Blue Sky Deli are continuing their ever popular foodie nights, check out their window for upcoming dates as they sell out very quickly. Enough from me – warm happy wishes for 2016!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? GARDENING RESOLUTIONS

I’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions. 1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions.

Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span. 2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.

3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening.

34 • Highcliffe Eye • January 2016

This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time. 5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7. I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties.

Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy.
