TUCKTONIA: BEFORE TUCKTONIA Written by Alexander McKinstry
The Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park was founded by Harry Stiller in 1972, but its origins lay in the golf club that preceded it - the memory of which survives in ‘Fairway Drive’, on what had originally been the site’s northern boundary of the site. Before launching into the history of the leisure park, however - and its main feature, the model landscape known as Tucktonia - a potted history of the district may be of some interest. The site had been used for agriculture since the nineteenth century, though problems arose from the fact that it was a flood plain; in 1888, for instance, Richard Butler, a tenant farmer, lost 100 tons of mangel-wurzel from the fields here, most
of which were lying in heaps waiting to be carted away. (A few tons were salvaged using boats from the Christchurch Quay area.) In 1908 the land was acquired by the French Gardening Company, who grew salad crops here in the continental manner beneath serried ranks of glass bell-jars known as cloches. After further floods in 1916, however, the company migrated further up Stour Road, where the Douglas Avenue allotments were later laid out. From then on, the land lay fallow until being acquired by a developer, Alfred Curling Hunter, who had developed much of the Broadway area. He envisaged laying out a small estate here, but in 1931 his company entered voluntary liquidation, whereupon Arthur Vine, a young professional golfer, began renting the site from the liquidator. The result was the Tuckton Golf School, which opened in 1932 and was distinguished by metal practice sheds fitted with mirrors, allowing novices 6 6• • Christchurch Christchurch Eye Eye • • February February 2015 2015
to practise their swings even in wet weather. During the Second World War the site was taken over by the Home Guard and used for exercises, but Vine resumed his hold of the site soon afterwards, draining three ponds to make an 18-hole course and laying out a second, 12-hole course which, in summer months, was lit by eighteen 32-ft. pylons, allowing visitors to play long after nightfall. This was the first floodlit golf course in the country Vine had welded and erected the lights himself, at a cost of £600 - and it duly impressed Harry Stiller, a twenty-year-old golfing enthusiast, when he arrived in Bournemouth in 1958. ‘He was actually my business partner,’ says Harry Stiller today, ‘because I was a mad golfer, and when Arthur was talking about retirement one day I said I’d be interested in taking the place on. A year later he became quite ill, and I went into partnership with him - and when he died, I bought out his share from his widow. This would have been 1961.’ One of Harry’s first moves was to procure a drinks licence for the clubhouse which Vine had erected at the site in the mid-1950s. ‘That became The Golfer’s Arms,’ says Harry, ‘and in fact we got the first seasonal drinks licence in the country, allowing us to sell alcohol between April and October each year.’ Such was the site’s popularity; this was extended to an all-year-round drinks licence in September 1963. This, then, was the gestation of the Tuckton Golf Course, as it had become known by the early 1960s. During that decade Harry Stiller tended to focus on his Formula 3 career, only to abandon the sport in 1969 after two successive accidents testdriving tyres. At this point, he began taking steps to transform the Stour Road site into a full-fledged fun park, something that Christchurch and even Bournemouth lacked at that juncture. We will look at the results, which were to electrify the district, in our next issue.

It is rare to find the words “pensions” and “exciting” in the same sentence, but the new pension rules in force from the 1st April 2015 are certainly exciting some people locally. Saving for your pension Peter is one of those things we all know we ought to do. Tax allowances act as an encouragement but the complex rules when you retire have been off-putting. Indeed, the obligation to buy an annuity, and the recent poor returns due to low interest rates, has put off many from investing at all. From 1st April, all that is changing. No longer will you be obliged to buy an annuity and, in most cases, you will be able to draw out funds from your pension as you please (subject to income tax payments on the money withdrawn). The mischievous suggestion that pensioners will all be cashing in their pensions to buy Lamborghinis is an unlikely vision in Christchurch. But the temptation may be there to do other things. Withdrawing money from your pension fund to clear the mortgage is certainly the plan for some people I know. After a lifetime of work, one could not blame some for using a bit for a holiday, or a car upgrade or a house improvement. Of course, where there is money, there are usually relations and the fear is that some might be persuaded to access their hard earned pension monies to help the next generation get on the housing ladder. From a local business point of view, with the age profile of our area, the availability of funds not previously accessible could give the local economy a boost. The important thing is to make certain there are enough local independent pension advisors available to ensure realistic advice is given and sensible decisions are made. As we are all living longer, keeping money within a pension is also important.

To the right of the main pathway leading to the Priory Church is an old tomb that has for centuries presented a history mystery. Henry Rogers had died the year before the start of the Civil War, so perhaps his grave was the most notable of those disturbed? The inscription makes no mention of the gender of the ‘raysd’, so maybe his wife was also numbered amongst the ten? Sadly, there is no strong supportive evidence for any of these theories. As local historian Mike Andrews has commented, the only way to know for certain if the tomb actually contains ten bodies would be to have it excavated – but then the tombstone inscription would need to be amended to read ‘buried thrice’! Can you offer any alternative explanations for the mysterious Puzzle Tomb?
Henry Rogers was Mayor of Christchurch eight times between 1615 and 1639. The ‘IR’ after his name is believed to be the initials of the stonemason who engraved the epitaph, for these also appear on other tombstones of the same period, including a similar but far less legible stone at the rear of the tomb that records the burial of Henry Rogers’ wife. One speculative theory to explain this mysterious tomb suggests that ten sailors were drowned in a shipwreck in Christchurch Bay and their bodies were buried near where they were washed ashore. The Lord of the Manor then insisted that these unfortunate sailors should be decently reburied in the churchyard, but Mayor Henry Rogers was reluctant to bear the cost of the multiple reburials. These two ‘men of strife’ finally agreed on a compromise of having all ten men buried in a common grave paid for by Rogers. In 1797 the young Romantic poet Robert Southey, then aged only 23, was living with his wife Edith in a rented cottage in Burton. He recorded the tombstone in his notebook along with a local tradition that the ten men had been killed by a landfall whilst digging in a gravel pit and their bodies had to be dug out before being reburied. Southey also noted another local story that the ten men were said to be Royalists ‘whose bones were dug up by Cromwell’ during the English Civil War. Although Oliver Cromwell never personally came to Christchurch, this comment has evolved into the popular theory that the tomb was erected in the wake of the 1645 Siege of Christchurch (see last month’s Local History article), when a small Parliamentarian garrison was besieged within the castle and churchyard for over ten days before their Royalist attackers were compelled to retreat. It is suggested that the desperate Roundheads had excavated ten lead lined coffins in order to cast more lead shot for their muskets. 14 14 • • Christchurch Christchurch Eye Eye • • February February 2015 2015

The Romantic poet Robert Southey also has a link to another of the Priory’s memorials. After moving from Burton in 1799 he eventually settled in the Lake District where, in the company of his brotherin-law Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Lakeland native William Wordsworth, he became a founder of the so-called ‘Lake Poets’. It was in Keswick that in 1811 he first met, and briefly became the mentor of, an idealistic young poet named Percy Bysshe Shelley. Shelley became noted amongst the next generation of Romantic poets, but in 1822 he drowned off the coast of Italy and his body was cremated on the beach. In 1851, Shelley’s widow, Mary Wollstonecraft, the famed authoress of the philosophical horror novel Frankenstein, bought a cliff-top home at Boscombe and established a family vault in St Peter’s Church, Bournemouth. This was where Shelley’s heart, which had been snatched from his funeral pyre, was later buried. However, St Peter’s declined a marble memorial commissioned by Shelley’s son, so this was instead installed in the Christchurch Priory Church, where it can still be seen.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 1 - By-Pass Car Park
The dental hygienist is what most people instinctively think of if you mention the word ‘plaque’, but in Christchurch we have another, happier, connotation. There are 19 Millennium blue-plaques dotted around the town centre, plus other miscellaneous plaques. What they have in common is a desire to tell us about buildings and people that made Christchurch what it is. The blue-plaques were placed courtesy of Christchurch Local History Society, which continues to promote local heritage that sometimes can be taken for granted. In the first of a series looking at these plaques, I’ve chosen to start with the only blue-plaque north of the bypass, which also happens to commemorate Christchurch’s earliest settlers. It can be found on a brick column just before you turn the corner for Waitrose and recalls that an archaeological dig on the site, now occupied by the By-Pass Car Park, once revealed finds dating back to the New Stone Age. It was clearly a significant spot, for representatives of the Bronze Age, Iron Age and AngloSaxons also left their mark. We should not be overly surprised for it is established that nearby Hengistbury Head was inhabited in the Stone Age and had become a significant port by the Iron Age. Our blue-plaque recalls Christchurch’s earliest cemetery with barrows, burials and cremations, giving intriguing hints as to the lives and deaths of our distant forebears. The Saxons are held to be the true founders of what we know today as Christchurch and they seem

to have chosen their burial site carefully, honouring dead of long before. It seems burial places were ‘sanctified’ if they had been used since time immemorial and the Saxons were keen to re-use rather than neglect.

Saxon burials were aligned around Bronze Age barrows; a better life in the hereafter through association maybe. One such is depicted in the Red House Museum and is as close as we will get to looking in on the burial rites of a Millennium ago. Some of the grave goods from ‘Grave 14’ can also be seen, a spear, shield-boss, knife and such like. Acidic soils, like we have here, erode skeletons to the point where the barest trace is visible. Grave goods can be made of sterner stuff, so survive. The spur for digging was the building of the supermarket and car park in the late 1970s, which gave archaeologists possibly their only chance to discover what lay underneath. Two Bronze Age barrows and over 30 Saxon graves was a good haul by anyone’s standard and yet not even all the cemetery was excavated. On the Water As Christchurch is a waterside community all of us are affected in some way by the sea. In 2014 we saw the extremes of British maritime weather. Last winter our local coastline was exposed to an unusual and prolonged combination John of severe storms. Winds in excess of ninety miles per hour, plus some of the highest tides for a decade, led to significant damage including hundreds of beach huts destroyed on Bournemouth seafront. Various south coast locations experienced erosion rates 25 times greater than the annual average, which reflected the intensity of the storms. During a typical winter there is time between each storm, allowing for natural recovery of the beaches. The major difference last year was that each storm was working on a progressively weakened and lowered beach. This sequence of storms had a considerable impact on beaches in Christchurch Bay. Milford on Sea was badly hit during the ‘Valentines Day Storm’ on 14th February 2014. The BBC reported dozens of diners rescued from a beachfront restaurant when rocks smashed through the windows and beach huts ‘annihilated’ by ferocious overnight winds. At Avon and Friars Cliff beaches the storms resulted in the lowest beach levels for over 40 years. Both beaches suffered extensive damage to the existing defences and promenade including the loss of over 50 beach huts from Avon Beach. Christchurch Borough Council brought in civil engineering and coastal defence specialists to undertake emergency works. Rock groynes were constructed, a section of the sea wall at Avon Beach was given added protection of rock armour and the promenade was repaired ready for what turned out to be one of the calmest and warmest summers on record. Christchurch Rotary During the last 12 months I have tried to show Eye Readers what Rotary, in particular Christchurch Rotary is all about. This year I intend to give you more of a diary of what we are up to. As I write this article (early Paul Jan, 2015) our Treasurer has advised the Club that our regular local store and High Street Collections (Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and the High Street) have raised over £1,100 in cash and further 400kg of Food (together with £50 cash, from the Waitrose Food Bank!) We would like to say a huge Thank You to the stores and the community for this continued generous support. One of our “elder statesmen” (think that’s the correct term, bet I’ll be in trouble) Ian Elkins has long been at the helm of organising and arranging these collections, and together with club members has raised thousands over the years. I recall the Stanpit Bonfire clean up morning with torrential rain and Ian was one of the first on site, a born and bred Rotarian! This money will be duly banked and quickly dispersed of by the Community Committee as to where best needed. In the New Year the club re-groups after enjoying the festive season to organise our agenda for the forthcoming year, prioritise and target where we can make a difference. Assuming you are still reading this article I am now asking for your help. If the work we do is of interest then perhaps 2015 is the year to do something about it. Our club door is open to everyone. Often clubs have older members, as young groups don’t simply have the time, which we understand, but remember, “a little effort is better than non at all”. Perhaps come along and meet us or make contact via email or call me on 01425 277277. The club can only continue to move forward if we have the membership to support our plans. Tossing pancakes in a race for Christchurch Food Festival charity Pancake Day (Tuesday 17 February) will see the cobbled area of Church Street in Christchurch transformed into a race track as chefs, business people and local celebrities grab their frying pans and toss their way to victory in pancake races. The Christchurch Food Festival is holding the pancake races on Shrove Tuesday in front of the historic Priory Church to benefit its charity, Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust. Races start at 10.30am. Building on the success of last year’s event, the Food Festival committee hopes to encourage more teams to enter this year to raise more money. Entrance fee for teams of four is just £20 while individual chefs are also being encouraged to enter for £5. Last year’s event saw Halifax Bank taking the top team prize while Ludwig Spitzer, chef at Loch & Quay, won the individual chef event. Vicki Hallam, chairman of the Food Festival committee, said: “We had great fun last year. It

was amazing how competitive everyone was but we had to disqualify some team members as there was a bit of cheating going on with pancakes not being tossed enough. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? THIS MONTH - BLOWSY BEGONIAS
Every gardener has at least one guilty secret: mine is begonias. My mother insists they are vulgar and she wouldn’t give them house room. A gardening friend turned up her nose at my begonia baskets last year, but I won’t hear a word against them. They are the cheerful, cockney barrow boys of the plant world and I love them. They are pretty easy to grow once you know how, and you can start them off any time now if you have a warm windowsill or a propagator. One of the reasons I find them so satisfying to grow is that they start life as a rather unprepossessing tuber, which my husband once described as looking like dried dog poo - he isn’t a gardener. The tubers should feel rock hard when you squeeze them. If they feel spongy, put them back. There is also a right way up and a wrong way up. Take your tuber and examine it. There should be a concave surface - like a little dip - and a convex surface. The dip is the upper surface from which the shoots will grow and the convex surface sprouts the roots. Fill some 12cm/5inch pots with soil-less potting compost so that the surface of the compost is 2.5cm /1 inch below the rim of the pot. This eventually allows for watering, but at this time of year the top of the tuber should be kept dry.
Push the tubers – remember concave side up - into the compost so that the top of each tuber is still visible. Do not bury them. Keep the pots at somewhere between 15-18C / 60-75F in the propagator, in a greenhouse, or on a bright windowsill, though not in direct sunlight. Water with care, and when the first flowers appear make sure they are well ventilated. High humidity and erratic watering can cause the buds to drop off. Finally, begonias have both male and female flowers. The male ones are far bigger and more showy, so pinch off the female ones, which can be spotted because they possess an embryonic seed pod behind the bud. Doing this will mean that the male flowers last much longer. You may need to stake them to support the heads. When summer arrives, you will be able to plant up pots and baskets and bask in the flamboyant blowsy beauty of the begonia: Who could resist?

If you know me you will know one of my favorite things is music so when an opportunity arises to play and make music I will take it. But here is something that you may not have known; there is a great music centre on Barrack road in Christchurch by the Fountain roundabout called The Lighthouse Youth & Community Centre. I recently went there with a friend and it’s amazing! They have a lounge area, 2 practice rooms, karaoke, a games room with darts and a pool table, a recording studio and an outside space that is used for football and team building games during the summer. It costs 50p per night but the first time you go its free! The centre is for 13-19 year olds and open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm to 10pm. The staff there are lovely and the other teenagers there made my friend and I feel included and very welcome.

Traditional Pancakes INGREDIENTS
100g plain flour 2 eggs 300ml semi-skimmed milk 1 tbsp sunflower oil or vegetable, plus extra for frying pinch salt METHOD
Put the flour and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, then pour in about 50ml milk and 1 tbsp oil. Start whisking from the centre, gradually drawing the flour into the eggs, milk and oil. Once all the flour is incorporated, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little more milk if it is too stiff to beat.
Add a good splash of milk and whisk to loosen the thick batter. While still whisking, pour in a steady stream of the remaining milk. Continue pouring and whisking until you have a batter that is the consistency of slightly thick single cream. Heat the pan over a moderate heat, then wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around for a thin and even layer. Quickly pour any excess batter into a jug, return the pan to the heat, then leave to cook, undisturbed, for about 30 secs. Pour the excess batter from the jug back into the mixing bowl. If the pan is the right temperature, the pancake should turn golden underneath after about 30 secs and will be ready to toss to cook the other side. Serve with your favourite toppings.

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Services of Christchurch Angels are offered to isolated, vulnerable patients registered in all the GP Surgeries in Christchurch. We are particularly looking for Angel volunteers across Christchurch, including those who live in the Highcliffe area, as well as Burton. Christchurch Angels Project is led by Christchurch Community Partnership and is funded by Dorset Community Foundation, the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group and Sovereign Housing. The office is based at Stour Surgery, Christchurch.
Christchurch Angels aims to reach those in our community who don’t have a network of family/ friends to give that practical help and support in times of crisis or illness for a couple of months. It may be a young mum who breaks her ankle and needs help, or an older person who comes out of hospital and needs someone to help them rebuild their confidence in coping.......or any number of other scenarios. It is the community helping the community and both recipient and donor benefiting from the experience. The kind of things a volunteer Angel can help with are: • Visiting people in their homes and providing regular contact if needed • Helping and supporting people to use local facilities, activities and resources • Assisting with information and advice regarding other agencies who can provide support • Acting as an advocate when necessary • Helping with paperwork and correspondence • Helping with practical tasks, e.g. getting prescriptions, mowing the lawn, walking the dog on a short term basis • Helping to develop a better social life • Shopping transport via Dial a Bus or Age Concern • Accompanied walks with the Strollers Examples of how our Angels have given help:
• An elderly man lost his wife a few months ago and was extremely depressed, not eating properly and his health was failing. An angel visits him regularly and cooks him a casserole. We are also in discussion with his local medical practice to support him.

• A lady who relies on her son for support and do her shopping needed an Angel for a few weeks whilst her son was in hospital. He felt greatly relieved knowing someone was popping in to see his Mum on a regular basis. A Christchurch Angel went to see the lady at least once a week to make sure she was coping and that the network of helpers set up by the son prior to his hospital visit was working well. • An elderly Yorkshire man, recently bereaved,was very lonely and could not go out due to breathlessness and poor eyesight - a male Angel, who also happens to be from Yorkshire, has befriended him. He now has a new lease of life and has started to play the piano again.
Volunteers will not be expected to carry out personal care or housework. Mumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Word Two weeks ago, at 10pm at night, I found myself frantically cutting up onions, wrapping them in muslin cloths and placing them in my childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bedrooms. I had read this was supposed to help the Natasha constant coughing that had been keeping the children awake. Did it work? I think so! The coughing dramatically reduced for the rest of the week, bliss! So, with a new found love of onions, I trawled the Internet for more natural remedies. These next few months are prime cold seasons, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a huge fan, like many, of giving medicine after medicine, so I found some great natural alternatives to gently help along the way. For instance, pineapple juice is said to be more effective than cough syrup by five times, sitting in a steamy bathroom with your little one can help unblock stuffy noses and, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s said placing a clove of garlic in the bottom of sock before bed will rid the cold by morning!
