Dear Reader
Well it’s back to school time so our house can maybe start to get back to some sort of normality. Well, ‘normal’ is not really a word I’d ever associate with our home, but Cheryl at least we can get back into some sort of routine. My youngest, Siena, is also starting school this September so it’s going to be a whole new world for both her and myself. I’m pleased to say that Siena is very excited about starting her new school and was parading around in her uniform back in July asking how many sleeps ‘til school! With all three of my children now at school or working, it enables me to progress my business even further, so you may start to see a few changes over the coming months and also a new magazine to come in a neighbouring area! It’s very much exciting times all round and I look forward to our new adventures ahead.

- The Great Hill of Richedon
It may not come as a great surprise to learn that St Catherine’s Hill has not always been known as St Catherine’s Hill - but by what name was it previously known? Medieval documents, such as the Christchurch Priory Cartulary, show that this prominent hill to the northwest of the town was formerly known as Richedon - though it was written with various spellings, such as Richesdone or Rychesdoune. Although it was first recorded by the Normans, this name clearly has an older origin. The prefix Riche- is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ríce, which means ‘mighty’. The –don suffix is derived from the AngloSaxon dúne, which simply means ‘hill’. This survives in modern English as seaside sand hills or ‘dunes’. It also explains why it is necessary to climb up onto the Hampshire or Sussex Downs. The former name of St Catherine’s Hill therefore translates as something like ‘Great Hill’. This name was perhaps to distinguish it from the Little Hill (Littledown) across the River Stour to the west. Some history books, including the much respected Victoria County History published in 1912, suggest that St Catherine’s Hill may also have been known as Rishton - another name that appears in medieval documents. However, the prefix Rish- is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon rysc, which means ‘rush’ or ‘reed’ and the very common suffix -ton is derived from tún, which originally referred to an enclosed piece of land, but later came to mean a farmstead. This clearly indicates that Rishton was a farm with a riverside rather than a hilltop location! It is now accepted that Rishton was near Ringwood where the road to Longham and Wimborne crossed the Moors River. A chapel at Rishton, dedicated to St Leonard, was acquired by Christchurch Priory in 1304. The exact site of the chapel is now lost (unless you know otherwise...), but the area is still known as St Leonards. The earliest known reference to a chapel on Richedon appears in November 1331, when the Bishop of Winchester wrote to Christchurch Priory saying that he understood that ‘a chapel in honour of the Blessed Virgin Katherine has been newly built on their land on the hill of Richesdon’. He was concerned that the chapel had been erected without his knowledge and directed that the celebration of divine service there should be restricted to the forthcoming feast-day of St Katherine only (25th November) until he had fully investigated the matter. Not until the following
February, with his episcopal ‘planning permission’ seemingly granted, did he permit weekly services to be held in the chapel. Archaeological excavations undertaken during the late 1960s found evidence that a series of chapels had existed on the site between the 11th and 16th centuries. Perhaps the Bishop of Winchester had not been notified of the new chapel because it had merely replaced a previous one? According to tradition, St Catherine of Alexandria was a devout Christian teenager who was executed in the early 4th century for bravely condemning the pagan tyrant Emperor Maximinus II, Caesar of Syria and Egypt. It was said that her body was carried by angels to be buried on the summit of Mount Sinai. A church and monastery were later erected on the reputed site. Although early pilgrims to Mount Sinai make no reference to her tomb, chapels dedicated to St Catherine were similarly placed on hilltops as her popularity spread into England. It is thought that the chapel on Richedon survived until the dissolution of Christchurch Priory in 1539, and it was probably only after it fell into disuse that the hill started to become known as St Catherine’s.

Over the summer holidays my son came to work in the office. Good experience and funds for him and essential cover for us. One unexpected benefit was that we had lunch together most days – but where to go?
We quickly realised there was no shortage of choice. I have always wondered how small catering establishments make ends meet. You must have to sell a lot of teas, coffees and small-value items to cover rent, business rates, staff costs and other overheads that businesses have. Despite that, café society in Christchurch is clearly booming. We decided to try a different one each day, but soon realised we would never be able to visit them all. We counted a staggering 42 alternative lunch venues within Christchurch town centre and Bargates. The Council used to have a policy of no more than 30% of premises being cafes and restaurants. That has gone and the number has flourished. The advantage is a full high street and a magnificently wide choice.
We left aside the hotels and main restaurants and concentrated on the independently owned cafes and wine bars. We are marking them out of ten as we go, but are still nowhere close to having tried them all. So far, every one we have tried has been welcoming. The feel of the premises, choice of food and speed of service (important with a lunch break) have varied widely. Quality of food has ranged from average to excellent.
As our visits were in the peak summer holiday period, nearly all were busy. However one suspects that with the competition in the town, some may struggle during the winter months – so I encourage you all to support as many as you can!

The Great Bransgore Beer Festival Friday 25th - Sunday 27th September 2015 at the Three Tuns, Bransgore Last year’s Festival raised over £22,000 for Rotary Charities and Community Projects locally as well as internationally with some 3,500 people attending. This year will be bigger than before with three marquees and The Barn as well as plenty of outside covered seating. There will be at least 72 barrels of beer from all over the UK also 60 cases of differing ciders. We are introducing a new and improved wine and food selection with tastings. Full live entertainment will take place throughout the weekend from various groups. There will be children’s entertainment including a bouncy castle making it a total family event. Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 8 - The Famous Ferreys
None other than Thomas Hardy might have ended up working for him (Benjamin Ferrey that is). It’s time for plaque 10 on our trail at 6/6a Castle Street, today’s Pettengells Estate Agents. This house was originally built in the 17th century for a wealthy mercer, a dealer in fine fabrics, with today’s frontage added in the 18th century. The dwelling passed to the talented Ferrey family, who owned a drapery business in the High Street (today’s ‘Bookends’), from 1760 until 1936, where Benjamin Ferrey lived as a child. The most famous of the Ferreys was Benjamin Junior (1810-80), born in Christchurch, a quite brilliant architect and winner of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) Gold Medal in 1870. He started his own practice in London in 1834 and it was in April 1862 that the 21-year-old Hardy arrived bearing a letter of introduction. Ferrey had no work for him. The plaque tells us that Ferrey was a renowned ecclesiastical (church) architect, trained by the elder Pugin (the younger Pugin worked on the refurbishment of the Houses of Parliament after the 1834 fire). Ferrey had regular work with the Bath & Wells Diocese, where he was honorary architect for 39 years, which included much of the restoration work on Wells Cathedral. Ferrey also designed what became the cathedral of St Paul’s on the island of St Helena. Some of his practice’s early work was on the design of the new resort of Bournemouth, including the Royal Bath Hotel, which opened in 1838. Ferrey also left his mark in Christchurch, with

work in the Priory, St Luke’s Church (Burton) and the arched gateway and two chapels at Jumpers Cemetery. Ferrey Junior’s last design was Bagshot Park in Surrey, a commission from none other than Queen Victoria.

Is if that wasn’t enough, Ferrey was also an accomplished artist, painting seven watercolours to illustrate his book, ‘The Antiquities of the Priory of Christ-Church, Hampshire’ (1841), pictures currently in the Priory’s St Michael’s Loft Museum. Apparently Benjamin loved to draw in the Priory as a boy. He was, by all accounts, personable, good-natured and well-liked and had a son, Edmund Benjamin Ferrey, who also became an architect. Benjamin Ferrey Senior was a draper of Huguenot descent and mayor of Christchurch, who apparently left ‘diary jottings’ on the 18th century wainscot panelling (at 6/6a), discovered in a much later restoration. We should also not forget George Ferrey, Benjamin Junior’s brother, organist at the Priory for half-a-century and also mayor of Christchurch. A plaque in the Priory records that due to George’s exertions the organ was twice enlarged and reconstructed, in 1865 and 1890, the latter just a few years before George’s demise in 1893. We are still active in our concern over the scruffy and overgrown state of many parts of the town, and are gathering pictorial information showing just how run-down certain areas are. When shown we hope this will persuade the powers that be to remedy this problem without further delay. If you have photographs that you think will be helpful please bring them along to our September meeting. Another matter over which our members have voiced a strong opinion is the number of extra lorries expected to be going through Christchurch (as many as approximately 60 a day) when the gravel extraction commences at Roeshot Hill. These lorries are not allowed through the New Forest or Lyndhurst, which means they will be using our town as a thoroughfare, and exacerbating the problem we already have on Bargates, Fairmile and Barrack Road. This, along with the possibility of the proposed new school in Marsh Lane, will cause even more mayhem on our roads.
At our last meeting we were pleased to welcome several new members who added to our discussions with their questions and ideas and we would be pleased for any resident of our town to come along to express their views. The next CCA meeting will take place on the 14th September at 7.30pm in Druitt Hall.

Those of you that follow the property market, and let’s be honest who Jeremy doesn’t, might be forgiven to think that apart from London nowhere else exists!
Whenever there’s an article about prices rising quicker than Apollo 13 or about tenants paying more than they earn to rich landlords, you can bet your bottom dollar that the journalist hasn’t bothered to travel very far from the capital.
Now I am here to tell you that the property market exists down here in deepest darkest Dorset and is doing very well thank you. Prices have risen over the past year – great news if you own a property but not so good if you’re trying to get onto the housing ladder. There is an old saying – “every cloud has a silver lining�, so what is the silver lining?
Well put yourself in the position of a First Time Buyer, saving hard for a deposit in a market that continues to rise. Those folk need somewhere to live and will probably need it for some time. You could be their silver lining by becoming a landlord; being a landlord has changed over the past few years, gone are the days of emulsion on woodchip paper but gone also are the days of tenants moving every six months. Nowadays, tenants stay much longer; our average tenancy is currently over four years, which means that as landlords the periods of not receiving rent between tenants have reduced dramatically. Yes, prices are higher, but so are local rents and I personally think that now is a very good time to become a landlord, couple this with a desperate shortage of good properties (especially houses) to rent and there is a constantly growing demand.
Properties sell quickly, especially those suitable for rental, so if you spot something, call me and I can give you an honest opinion before you buy.

Christchurch Angels, as part of the Christchurch Community Partnership (CCP), has produced a Directory of Information and Support Services for the people of Christchurch which will be held in Libraries, community venues and GP practices. The Directory has been developed and updated on-line over the last two years www.christchurchangels. org.uk and has proved invaluable for use by GPs, nurses, social and community providers, as well as to volunteers who are supporting isolated vulnerable people in the community. The Directory is being sponsored by Connecting Advice in Dorset (CAID) funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. The Christchurch Angels project, led by Jan Childs, Volunteer Executive Officer for Christchurch Community Partnership, and professionally coordinated by Linda Green, won the prestigious 2013 NHS Alliance Acorn Award for Making a Difference - the best example of a GP practice working with its community to improve health. The project provides ‘short term’ befriending support for isolated, vulnerable people registered with Christchurch GP practices in order to combat loneliness and to provide care outside hospital for those requiring urgent social care support to avoid admission to hospital. Jan Childs said: “I’m delighted with what we’ve managed to achieve in Christchurch, and to make available this invaluable information resource. My goal has always been to ensure primary care becomes a partner with the wider community, and to work with the Christchurch Community Partnership and the voluntary sector to find solutions to problems that lie well outside the traditional remit of the NHS. Christchurch Rotary So where did the summer go? Whilst fairly quiet on the fund raising front for the club, we have been out and about trying to promote Rotary in general.

Our club was represented at the New Forest Show with ShelterBox. This was a stand to show how essential this box can be in times of crisis. The Box contains items required to not only survive, but useful equipment to try and re-build lives. Those that have seen it are always surprised at how much goes into a box. The annual show had one of its best years and was a great place to showcase ShelterBox.
Another project, which the club is supporting, is Verwood Rotary Club’s Global Grant application for $10,000 from Rotary Foundation. This is to support the Contessa charity, which recently gave an address to our club about the plight of orphaned children in Zambia whose parents have fallen victim to HIV/AIDS or ill health. What a good feeling it is to know that we are giving hope to these children. Can you image our children suffering such a plight? Margaret McDermott, vice chairperson of Contessa, has the inspiring motto of “Empowering the children to succeed”. This grant (we are anxiously awaiting approval) will make a huge impact for such a deserving cause. Whilst some may be skeptical of overseas funding this is a real hands on project, watched over every step of the way. That’s the beauty of Rotary funding international projects; we’ve seen and done it all before. Whilst in Christchurch we look to help our local community, we are also mindful of the wider world in which we live. Fingers crossed for the funding.

Mum’s the Word This month sees parents with school age children, sending our young ones back to school. We are back into the early mornings and after school clubs, the mountain of Natasha washing and the 20 different costumes/discos/parties to get ready for. Have you got your coffee on the go? With normality returning, I always get a little saddened at how much shorter the time is that I spend with my children when they are back into their equivalent of our 9-5 (see, I warned you of this in my last article!). With school looming, I take to making lists of things to do together and ways to give us all some respite. It’s difficult after a school day, the hours are limited and children tired, but I have found some little treasures that I hope will pass on some inspiration for a few ‘treat’ trips out.
1. The Regent Centre in Christchurch town centre has some great shows for September. Romeo and Juliet is being performed by the Royal Ballet and is to be shown live via cinema screen at 7.15pm on September 22nd and again on September 27th. I know a certain (smaller) ballerina that will love this. 2. The Clay studio in Christchurch is a lovely way for adults and children alike to unleash some artistic flare. The studio is open late until 10pm on Thursdays every week; they serve food and drinks so it could serve as an excuse to not cook that night as well... 3. The Red House Museum on Quay Road is open until 5pm Tuesday to Friday, so it could make for a nice after school trip. They have a lovely coffee shop to water the children and gardens to walk through whilst we still have some summer light. And (apart from the drinks!) it’s free.
4. Our local pool, Two Riversmeet, has an offer that lasts throughout September of £15 for 10 swims, saving up to £25. That is a fair bit of swimming, but even if you won’t quite make it into your costume that often, they are open most nights from 6pm-7pm for public sessions. Their hours do vary slightly day to day, so it’s best to check online before heading down. So, there are some ideas to play with, to try and catch a few more fun hours in the day before getting up and starting all over again with lunch boxes and missing school cardigans. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? A U T U M N I S FA S T A P P R O A C H I N G
September 23rd is a special date in the gardening calender. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit.
This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year. Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio.
Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leaf-raking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season. The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.
Autumn Lawn Care
Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down. Rake. Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin.
Spike lawn. Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Teen Column September already? After a great summer holiday with my friends, I now have to go back to school. This year is one Laura of the biggest years in my life, year 11. What I do this year could have a massive impact on what I end up becoming. After finding out my results for my mock exams, I was planning to focus on the areas I needed to improve on the most, but that seems to be all areas. To get in to the 6th form I wish to go to, I need to get the right grades as well as standing out over many other applicants. The thing that saddens me the most is for some of my friends; this is their last year in the same school as me so I wont be able to see them as often anymore. I am already aware that some of my friends do want to leave and have looked into other places. During the holidays I learnt that one of my friends, who has been living in Christchurch for a couple of years, had never been to The Red House Museum, so I decided to take her there. The museum was great and my friend really enjoyed it. We especially liked the area with all the old fashioned clothing. What I liked was the change in the gardens; if you go at different times of the year, the change in flowers and scent is amazing. The garden is so beautiful. There is a large tent in the gardens for fun games and activities throughout the year. I recommend the museum and gardens for people of all ages, as there is an endless amount of things to do. Just remember, if you have been there before to go again because so many things change and there are always new things to do. It is free admission too but if you do wish to make a donation there are boxes scattered about.

INSTRUCTIONS In a large pan, on a low heat, melt butter, sugar and syrup till runny. Mix in the oats really well, making sure none are left uncoated by the butter-sugar mix. Pour into a 20x30cm tray lined with baking parchment. Level out the mix with a spatula. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 C / Gas 3 for 25-35 minutes. (These should look seriously under-baked, that’s the point. When they are done, if you grip the pan and give it a little wobble, it will look uncooked. This is perfect.) Cover with a clean tea towel and leave for a whole day or overnight till completely cold. If you try and turn them out before, they will be ruined. When they are completely cold, turn them out and cut into squares. Wrapped in cling film or foil these will last a week at least. They freeze well too!

Both earned their ranks due to their hard work and commitment both at the detachment and within the Company. The Christchurch Cadets featured prominently in the C Company Sports at camp too with several members helping the Tug of War Team to victory, as a Company we also won the First Aid and Guard Mount Competitions and walked away with the Champion Company Cup, which we were rightly proud of. New Toilets and Refurbished Coffee Bar
Stop Press: TripAdvisor award the Regent their Certificate of Excellence Patrons of the Regent in Christchurch will be relieved to hear that the work on the new toilets at the Centre has been successfully completed on time. In addition, the Foyer Coffee Bar has also had a complete makeover, having been enlarged with new facilities and with more space to allow for a greater variety of confectionery, popcorn and hot and cold beverages. Flushed with the success of the renovations, the Management are certainly aiming high and the new loos at the Regent promise to be the best in Christchurch! It is interesting to think that when the Regent was built in 1931, indoor toilets were still a luxurious rarity with many houses still only having an outdoor privy to retreat to! Once again the Regent, as the leading public building in Christchurch, will be boasting the latest in WC comfort and technology for the benefit of all its patrons! The new toilet facilities, serving the Foyer and Auditorium, will include a doubling of the number of cubicles in the Ladies’ loos from the existing three to six cubicles; additional facilities in the Gentlemen’s toilets; improved access for the Disabled Toilet and eco-friendly, sensor
operated taps, lights and loos in all the new facilities. The entire project for the new toilets and coffee bar will come to approximately £100,000 including the cost of the twelve-day closure. The project has been financed from the Regent Development Fund, which is derived from ticket sales for shows, concerts and films. 50p of every ticket sold at the Regent is a contribution to the Regent Development Fund and now that money is being used to improve facilities for the community. In addition, generous donations from the general public, a £2,500 donation from the Bournemouth Airport Community Fund and a £200 donation from the Twynham Forest Group of Women’s Institutes have also been used to help fund the new toilets and Foyer coffee bar. Regent Centre Manager, Greg Rawlings, welcomed the opening of the new toilets: “It’s been worth every penny to have these new toilets up and running for our patrons. Their comfort and enjoyment is of paramount importance to all of us here at the Regent. All of our hard work is certainly paying off, because we have just heard that we have been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for achieving consistently outstanding reviews from visitors to the Regent”.

TUCKTONIA: THE INDIAN SUMMER Written by Alex McKinstry
On 14 July 1983, Peter Arnold, a former engineer who had been running some of the rides at the Tuckton Leisure Park, appeared on the front page of the ‘Echo’, standing in the shadow of Big Ben – or rather, the 13-ft. model of Big Ben, one of 200 models making up Tucktonia, the world-famous miniature landscape at the back of the site. Pictured with him were the three co-directors of Tasmavale Ltd, a newly-formed limited company, which had just bought the fun park for £1.25 million. The company renamed itself Tucktonia Ltd with effect from 7 November 1983; Peter was its managing director, and recalled the details of the take-over when I met up with him earlier this year. The park was “pretty run down”, said Peter, when his company acquired it, some of the models not having stood the test of time. The oil refinery, pictured below, had started rotting after standing in water for seven years, while Windsor Castle was in an equally sorry state (“I smashed it up”).
One of the company’s first moves was to develop the underutilised parts of the site; the paddling pool, for instance (35 ft in diameter, but hardly ever used) was converted into a boat ride, though it remained dormant after some mallard ducks built their nests in the driving machinery. Another new feature was the twenty-gun Hillbilly Shooting Gallery, purchased in Leicester for £37,000. Resembling an Appalachian mountain shack, it was presided over by a gun-toting model granny in a rocking-chair; she was not officially one of the targets, but she sat beneath a large cactus which squirted water, when struck, at the unsuspecting customers. It was Peter’s idea, too, to make the
most of the six-lane fun slide at the site by installing a haunted house under the stairs. “I put my mother-inlaw in charge of it.” These features were hugely popular, as was evident each summer, when the car parks overspilled: visitors even began parking on the golf course at the rear of the site. The company nevertheless faced some familiar difficulties: high maintenance costs, and opposition from local residents whenever new attractions were proposed. It was this that scuppered plans to bring a roller-coaster to the site. A Dutch firm, Vekoma, was willing to install a £1 million roller-coaster and to split the proceeds 50-50 for five years, after which Peter’s company would acquire the structure outright. “Admittedly, it wouldn’t have been in the best condition five years down the line,” says Peter today, “but I was an engineer – that didn’t worry me. But we couldn’t get planning permission.” The site’s previous owners, Grand Met, had faced similar problems in 1982, when they proposed installing a ‘Whirlwind Ride’; planning permission was refused, despite a petition containing 613 signatures in favour. It was against this background that, towards the end of 1985, the company resolved to sell the site – with the benefit of planning consent for 130 houses, plus a marina – and to set up shop elsewhere. The decision stunned local residents; but as Tex Rainger, the company’s finance director, explained to the ‘Advertiser’ of 17 July 1986, “the Stour Road site had become too small … They needed another site with more car parking to be able to house bigger rides.” It was hoped, Tex added, to keep the attraction within the Borough of Christchurch, but as we shall see in our next issue, the relocation never took place. When Tucktonia closed at the end of 1986, it did so for the last time ever. Demolition was underway that December, the Tucktonia flag – a chirpy robin, with a Union Jack breast – fluttering above the debris at half-mast.
