- King John’s Christchurch Charter

Exactly 800 years ago, on 15th June 1215, King John assented to probably the most famous charter in history, the Great Charter or Magna Carta. Only a few months earlier he had visited Christchurch, where he had granted a charter to the Priory. What is the story behind this King John charter? King John’s Christchurch charter confirmed that the Priory had been gifted the Manor of Fleet, near Abbotsbury, by Hawise de Redvers. Fleet was probably one of the many manors (along with Twynham) that King Henry I had granted to his loyal supporter Richard de Redvers soon after his coronation in 1100. After Richard’s death these manors were conferred on his eldest son, Baldwin. In about 1145 Baldwin granted the Manor of Fleet to his teenage daughter Hawise as a wedding gift upon her marriage to a grandson of King Henry I. Baldwin ventured on a pilgrimage or crusade to the Holy Land at about that time, so had he been keen to ensure his daughter’s welfare before departing on such a perilous journey overseas? Regardless, Baldwin returned safely and in about 1150 was responsible for founding Christchurch Priory by introducing ordained Augustinian canons.

John toured his English and French domains almost constantly throughout his 17 year reign and it is recorded that he came to Christchurch a total of ten times - does that perhaps make him the town’s most frequent royal visitor? Three of King John’s witnesses to his confirmation of Hawise’s charter would later also be named in Magna Carta. Once sealed, his Christchurch charter was presented to the Prior and a copy was added to the Charter Roll, an official record of all royal charters that was kept in London. It is not clear why King John’s confirmation of Hawise’s charter was deemed necessary, but it was to prove useful when, some 12 years later, Jordan de Chambernon’s son William took the Prior to court. Having come of age, he claimed that he had an entitlement to the Manor of Fleet because it had previously been held by his father. The Prior kept Fleet and settled the dispute by paying William a substantial sum in compensation. The Priory’s original King John charter has long since been lost, but in the mid-14th century it was copied, along with Hawise’s charter and hundreds of other important documents, into the Christchurch Priory Cartulary, where it can still be read.

Hawise granted out small parcels of land from her Manor of Fleet to various recipients. These ranged from Quarr Abbey, which her father had founded on the Isle of Wight, down to some of her tenants and servants, including her cook, Arnold! When her eldest grandson, Jordan de Chambernon, came of age Hawise gifted him the Manor of Fleet (excluding the parcels of land she had gifted elsewhere). She later named Jordan as her heir. However, he died before his grandmother and was buried in Christchurch Priory. In about 1214, when Hawise was probably aged over 80 and in the care of the canons, she gifted the Manor of Fleet to the Priory, specifying that this was partially for the salvation of her grandson Jordan’s soul. Her brother William, the Lord of the Manor of Christchurch, was the first named witness. Hawise died not long afterwards and as a specified condition of her gift was also buried in the Priory. On Saturday 31st January 1215 King John arrived in Christchurch on his way from Southampton to his castle at Corfe. He and his closest courtiers possibly lodged overnight as a guest of the Prior - the Priory would have undoubtedly been able to offer far more comfortable accommodation than the Castle. But what of our local Council? Reflecting the parliamentary election in the south, Christchurch Borough Council remains solidly blue. Of the 22 Councillors elected so far, 19 are Conservatives. Two independents remain in place in Jumpers and the one and only “shock” result is a UKIP Councillor in the Grange ousting a sitting Tory, which might add some interest to the mix. The Conservative group remain largely unaltered with all the seniors members re-elected. There are, however, three new younger faces who have been elected for the first time. Wendy Grace (who has had a market stall in Christchurch for years); Vicki Hallam (Chair of the Food Festival and previously owner of the Crooked Beam Restaurant) and Andy Barfield (an accountant and an Executive member of the Christchurch Chamber of Trade). It is good to see all three have good local business backgrounds.

LIVING CRAFT – A HOST OF TALENT

Christchurch Priory Church will be buzzing with activity from 8th to 12th June when a variety of local craftspeople gather to demonstrate their skills in this beautiful setting.

Once again the emphasis at this popular biennial event is on being inspired to learn. There will be plenty of information about courses and classes that are available locally and craftspeople will be happy to talk about their work and answer questions.

There will be a wide variety of crafts including cane, rush and sea grass work, stained glass, wood turning, jewellery making, basket making, ceramics, pottery, china painting, leather work, textiles (embroidery, lace, quilting, handbags, cushions, bears, knitwear), floral decoration not to mention paintings in different media.

There will also be musical interludes and of course the opportunity to purchase original locally handcrafted items at affordable prices. The exhibition is open between 10am and 4pm daily and admission is by donation to the Church (3.30pm finish on Friday). The event is organised by CADArts, a registered charity run by volunteers to promote and encourage the arts in Christchurch and district. CADArts run a number of events throughout the year and details of these can be found in the Diary of Art Events which is published twice a year and which can be obtained free of charge from the Hayloft Gallery in Wick Lane, Christchurch or from Christchurch Information Centre. Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 5 - Waifs and Strays

Two plaques for the price of one this month; a ‘BOGOF’ one might say. We’ll start at the top of the High Street, overlooking the by-pass (plaque 6), then leg it up the High Street & Church Street to the Priory Gates (plaque 7). Simples. Last month we talked about court officials being appointed in what is now the New Forest Perfumery. One was the Hayward, who managed the town’s common land (considerable in olden days) and the ‘pound’, a pen for stray animals, as well as being town crier; busy chap. The pound was around for centuries, its stone allegedly coming from that long-lost Bargate. The pound has gone too, demolished in 1958 for the by-pass that isn’t, but the name survives in Pound Lane. Some of Dorset’s pounds survive, e.g. at Langton Herring, although this is now a relic, not used for its original purpose. There is a story that one local landowner tried to claim rights over some common land by plonking a replica stag of his on the disputed patch (a pompous cove it seems). The locals, always covetous of their precious common, made a point by impounding the stag with other stray animals. The landowner’s men rescued the stag, but presumably lost the argument over the common. Meanwhile, there were other disputes being settled at the old Priory Courthouse, an early medieval court, where transgressions affecting the ‘Priory Manor of Christchurch Twyneham’ were heard. The plaque at the top of Church Street commemorates both

the Priory and this courthouse, which stood behind the wall until the late 19th century, when it was demolished, the site becoming part of the vicarage’s garden. The building had already ceased to be a courthouse, however, Stephen being converted into two cottages by the 17th century. The new vicarage occupies the site today. If you’re wondering how this fits in with ‘The Old Court House’ in Castle Street (April issue), bear in mind that Christchurch had three different manors, all of which would have had their own courts. There must have been plenty of characters up to no good to keep all these courts and attendant lock-ups ticking over. It seems there were waifs and strays aplenty in Christchurch in times gone by. A ‘waif’ was an item of unclaimed property found on a landowner’s territory, whereas a ‘stray’ referred to a domestic animal that had wandered on to the same land. Both words come from Norman French. A grant of ‘waif and stray’ permitted the landowner to take ownership of these goods and/or animals if they remained unclaimed after a set period. More business for the courts. It was only later the phrase became synonymous with homeless people and animals. On the Water

This wonderful time of year always sees a marked increase in people out and about on our local waters.

The ferries are busier, Chris the rowers are plenty, the kayakers are exploring, some power boaters are learning, the stand up paddlers are boarding, the sailors are chasing the wind and the self drive hire boats are in constant use. Add to that the fisherman, the duck feeders and the occasional party of marauding pirates as we saw recently (fancy dress boaters!) our waters really are in full use! And quite rightfully so! We live and work in one of the most beautiful waterways and harbours in England. As an exploring kayaker and SUPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;er (stand-up paddle boarder), Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been lucky enough to paddle in most of the waters around the UK, and Christchurch is by far my favourite place. The pure variety of great things to see, mixed with different grades of water provides the most wonderful journey in whatever your chosen way of being on the water is. For intrepid explorers the Avon loop offers history, beauty and nature all in a lovely circular route. On our trips weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen Otters, Stoats, Voles, Egrets and more types of fish than I could mention. A truly magical piece of water! The tranquil waters or the Stour heading inland offers a gentle flow for first time boaters of different crafts, combined with flashes of blinding blue from Kingfishers and its own bank side history tour of converted mills and old military sites.

The Harbour offers that sense of adventure we all look and long for, open water and the sense of an oncoming journey of discovery. The famous beach hut backdrop backed up by the stunning Hengistbury Head. However you do it and whichever vessel you choose to take to the water in, go and enjoy some of the most beautiful and rewarding waterways in the country, Bon Voyage! See you on the water!

Christchurch Rotary Part of being a Rotarian is to react quickly to any disaster - natural or otherwise - that may occur and offer what help we can. Such a crisis occurred Paul with the Nepal earthquake, which has claimed so many innocent lives, but what could we do in Christchurch? In such circumstances one of the first things needed is shelter and other vital equipment plus essentials people need to survive after a disaster to start rebuilding their lives.

Immediately, our International Committee, led by Paul Bond started to rally members (and Club supporters) hurriedly organising a street collection for Saturday 2nd May to send out additional boxes. METHOD

Use a fork to mash the avocado and the lemon juice in a bowl until smooth. Trim the top from the bread. Scoop out the centre, leaving a 3 - 4cm thick shell. Spread the avocado mixture over the base. Place a layer of spinach over the avocado and top with the feta. Continue layering with the capsicum, salami and tomato. Replace the top and press down firmly. Wrap the cob in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 4 hours to develop the flavours.

- A Bicentennial War Memorial

100 years ago British troops were fighting on the Western Front in Belgium during the First World War. 200 years ago British troops were also fighting in Belgium, striving to end what some historians call the true First World War. Conflict between Britain and France had begun in 1792 in the wake of the French Revolution, when Britain joined a coalition of European kingdoms opposed to the newly-created French Republic. Prompted by the fear of a French invasion, military barracks were built at Christchurch on open land ½ mile outside the town alongside a track leading to Iford. Constructed by Pilgrim, a local builder, they were completed in about 1798. The Guardhouse (now Level Hair Salon in Barrack Road) was added a few years later. The Christchurch Barracks soon became a base for the Royal Horse Artillery. The feared invasion never came. Nevertheless, the war continued in Europe until 1814, when the allied armies captured Paris and Bonaparte abdicated. He was exiled to the small Mediterranean island of Elba off the coast of Italy. However, less than a year later he escaped and returned to power. The Duke of Wellington was appointed in overall command of the allied armies mobilised against him - British soldiers were once again dispatched to Europe. In his Memoirs, written some 70 years after the event, James Howard Harris, who as the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury resided locally at Hurn Court, recalled watching troopers of the Household Cavalry riding off to war past his childhood London home. He wrote:‘It was a grand and moving sight, and would have been still more so had we known that not half of them were destined to return.’

No rank and file soldier who fought in the battle has yet been identified as coming from Christchurch (unless you know otherwise). However, one of the estimated 17,000 Anglo-Allied casualties of the battle was Captain William Cameron, a son of General Cameron of Nea House near Highcliffe. A cannon ball removed his sword arm and badly lacerated his thigh. He survived, but when his leg refused to heal the investigating surgeon found that fabric from his trousers and fragments of the silver coins that had been in the pocket had been impacted onto his thigh bone. The Troop of Royal Horse Artillery stationed at Christchurch Barracks in 1815 was assigned to home duties and was therefore not sent to Europe. Nevertheless, other Troops that had previously been stationed at the Barracks did fight in the battle. Within months of the victory a contract to rebuild Redford Bridge over the eastern branch of the River Avon was won by local mason William Hiscock, who had premises in the High Street (now Mathews Shoe Centre - a triangular pediment over one of the shop windows betrays the former position of the front door!). It is reputed that Hiscock used stone from the demolished old bridge to build a boundary wall to his property - this can still be seen facing into Druitt Gardens. Hiscock’s bridge and stone wall are now both Grade-listed structures. Then more than now, the bridge was on a major route in and out of the town - what disruption did Hiscock’s construction work cause to traffic? When completed in 1817 the rebuilt bridge was renamed Waterloo Bridge. It is therefore essentially a war memorial to the Battle of Waterloo, which sees its 200th anniversary this month.

The Duke of Wellington received the news that Napoleon had advanced into Belgium during a ball held in Brussels by the Duchess of Richmond on the evening of 16th June 1815. The liveried servants for this event were provided by British diplomat Sir Charles Stuart. He was the grandson of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, who had built a grand house on the cliff-top east of Christchurch and named it ‘High Cliff’. Sir Charles would later build a new residence on the same land - Highcliffe Castle. On Sunday 18th June 1815 the allied armies met and defeated Napoleon Bonaparte in farmland about 8 miles south-east of Brussels near the town of Waterloo. Bonaparte subsequently surrendered himself and was exiled to the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena, where he died in 1821. 44 • Christchurch Eye • June 2015

Mum’s the Word Often I decide to try and have a real crafty/ handmade, let’s crack open the Play-Doh/ Pinterest kind of day, Natasha only to wake up and the rush of the week, school runs, toddler ‘episodes’ and naps put a stop to my plans.

I actually had one of these exact days yesterday. Two of my little ones couldn’t quite get the hang of ‘sharing’ and the youngest didn’t want to leave the comfort of my lap, all day.

So I decided to look about at what really simple ideas are around to try and salvage ‘one of those days’ without needing a glue gun and a kilo of sequins like most Internet projects do. Several simple ideas from potato shape painting, to building a den in the living room, I think would work brilliantly, and they are basically free.

We’ve collected sticks from the local woods at St. Catherine’s Hill and painted them at home to make magic wands or a quick stop at the new Flaming Nora’s Toy Emporium with £2 to spend always goes down well. Even our local pet shop has become an outing on many days, the fish mesmerise them! I love a craft project with children (although I have to control the urge to take over, such as when we made a fairy garden and I got a bit too involved in which way the fairy path should go) but often-think simple is best. Go out, collect some twigs, stones, and glue, and I bet you’ve got a bunch of happy children, mostly! Failing that, there’s always the dvd hire section at the library!

TUCKTONIA: THE INSIDE STORY

Written by Alex McKinstry Last month we promised to look at what it was like to work at Tucktonia, the model landscape at the back of the Tuckton Leisure Park. An expert witness is Paul Taylor, who worked as a gardener there for ten years – joining not long after the model village opened, and leaving in 1986, six months before the entire site closed. When Paul joined there were two fellow full-timers on the gardening team: Arthur Chilcott, who mowed the golf course, and Ted Tolman, an ex-Spitfire pilot, whom Paul replaced as head gardener several years in. Paul’s work effectively began in November, when the flowerbeds got trampled to death during the annual fireworks display. He then spent the winter planning and planting the next year’s beds, tending to the results throughout the following summer, ‘grockles permitting’. The hardest part of the job was mowing the grass around Stonehenge, as it meant dismantling the model beforehand: ‘I used to beg them to put it on AstroTurf,’ says Paul. ‘I’m still not sure I ever reassembled Stonehenge correctly.’ Working at the Stour Road site became an addiction for Paul, because as he recalls, he and his colleagues ‘absolutely loved the place’; his wife describes herself as ‘a Tucktonia widow’ to this day. Surviving on beer and Pro-Plus, he often clocked up a seventy-hour week, returning four nights each week to clean the amusement arcade – ‘I used to find more under the machines than I ever got paid’ – and monitoring the site two nights a week for Sentinel Security. Later, when the amusement arcade was carpeted, Paul used to grab a few hours’ sleep on the floor with the guard dogs, keeping his sleeping bag on-site, rolled up between the water tanks. Paul’s other duties included escorting celebrities around the site – including Jon Pertwee, pictured here, who was promoting the TV show 48 • Christchurch Eye • June 2015

Worzel Gummidge. Paul’s job was to tow the actor round the complex on a straw-filled trailer. ‘At one point I thought I was going to kill him,’ says Paul. ‘They hooked the trailer up to a Ransome triple-deck mower, and I couldn’t get the blessed thing under control.’

Perhaps Paul’s oddest job was jumping into a sewage tank to remove a discarded mop-head, which was threatening to block the maceration pump: he was paid £20, and given the rest of the day off. A few weeks later, the same thing happened again. And again. ‘I think I chucked that mop-head into the tank eight times, to get a day off,’ recalls Paul, ‘and they never twigged.’ If Paul got away with such antics, it was partly because no one was quite sure who was in charge of the site during these early years. Grand Metropolitan, who had bought the site in 1975, seemed to appoint a new managing director each week, and only Geoff Rout (who left in 1983) remained at the helm for any great length of time. These were heady days, too, marked by new rides, floods, and a minor scandal involving cannabis plants in the ornamental rockery. We will look at these episodes – and hear a few more of Paul’s anecdotes – in the next issue.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? N E V E R T O O L AT E

Gardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. And even if you were super-efficient and your earlyplanted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest,

when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour. Enjoy your garden.

Teen Column Happy June! Wow, I can’t believe that we are already 6-months into 2015.

Laura This month, I have my year10 mock exams. I am kind of confident however, when I think I have got the answer right, I go through the paper at the end to double check and end up crossing out the right answer and put a wrong one! I have to remember to go with what my heart feels is right instead of my head. Also, I know the answer to a question but the exam board want you to write it in a certain way, which I can’t seem to do. My teachers say that exam technique will come with time, but I have been waiting for ages! Later on this month I will be running the Cancer Research ‘Race for Life’ that raises money for vital research into a Cancer cure. This cause is very close to my families’ heart and mine as we have lost close members to Cancer. Even if you are not taking part you can still donate and buy merchandise from http://www.cancerresearchuk. org. £10 could buy enough glass slides for a scientist to examine 300 tumour samples down a microscope! This month there is plenty to do in Christchurch. What caught my eye was the Living Craft event a host of talent exhibition at Christchurch Priory where you can watch local artists and craftspeople demonstrate their skills. You can also learn and find out where you can go to practice. This runs from the 8th to the 12th June from 10am-4pm (3:30pm on the 12th) so you have plenty of time to check it out. There is no specific entry fee but you do have to make a donation to the Christchurch Priory Church. Your donation goes towards the upkeep of the Priory and if you are a taxpayer please don’t forget to tick Gift Aid.
