Dear Reader

It’s a busy month in Christchurch with some of our larger events

taking place, such as the RNLI

Mudeford Funday, Stompin on the

Quomps, the Christchurch Carnival & Mudeford Arts Festival to name

Cheryl

just a few. Having been able to

help out a little with organising one of these recently, it has

come to my attention how much work the volunteers actually put into these events. We are very fortunate to have so many

people within our community that are willing to give so much of their time so that we can all enjoy a great day out and have lots of things to see and do. The contribution each of these

volunteers makes is part of the DNA of Christchurch and the reason why Christchurch has the great community feel that

it has. Not many towns can boast about such a thing but we

sure can shout it from the rooftops - Please do your bit too and come along if you can to show your support, they all make for fantastic days out!

- Harriet Susan Fitzharris

Of the many memorials in the Priory Church the monument to Harriet Susan Fitzharris, who died exactly 200 years ago, is undoubtedly one of the most delicately sculptured and touching. This is her story... In 1806 James Edward Harris, the eldest son of James Harris, the 1st Earl Of Malmesbury, married 22 year-old Harriet Dashwood. She thereby became Viscountess Fitzharris. The couple set up home at Heron (Hurn) Court. However, less than ten years later tragedy befell James and his young family. In 1815, while the country was still jubilant after the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo, Harriet suddenly fell extremely ill. She died 14 days later on 4th September, aged only 32. It is believed that she suffered a ruptured appendix. Her epitaph, written by her husband, declares that ‘So fully prepared was she at all times for another world, that the sudden and unexpected approach of death could not disturb the sweet serenity of her mind’. He recorded that his wife’s last words were: “I have had my full share of happiness in this world.”

Harriet was initially interred alongside other members of the Harris family in Salisbury Cathedral, where her black marble memorial can still be seen in the floor of the north transept. However, in 1821 her remains were reinterred in a crypt below her monument in the Priory Church. James (who in the previous year had succeeded his father to become the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury) had requested that the crypt be converted into a mausoleum for his family - as it still is to this day. James Howard Harris, the eldest of the three sons represented in the monument, later became the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury. In his Memoirs, written in 1884, he recalled: ‘My father lived at Heron Court for ten months out of the twelve, inconsolable at the death of our mother... and for twenty-six years during which he survived her he mourned her with the same sorrow. Until his own death in 1841, not a plant in her garden or a trinket in her boudoir was ever moved or changed.’ Harriet’s memorial is located on the south side of the quire near the altar.

Harriet’s memorial was created by John Flaxman, one of the most accomplished sculptors of the age. He began as a modeller for the famous pottery of Josiah Wedgwood and rose to be the first Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy. However, he became most renowned for his funerary monuments. One of his major works is a neo-classical memorial to Admiral Lord Nelson in St Paul’s Cathedral, which was in progress at the time of Harriet’s death. Flaxman also championed a campaign for the British Government to purchase the Elgin Marbles, a collection of classical Greek sculptures and stone carvings now on display in the British Museum. This collection was named after the 7th Earl of Elgin, who had controversially begun removing them from the Parthenon and other sites in Athens at the start of the century - reputedly to save them from further decay. The debate over the rightful ownership of these sculptures continues to this day. A preliminary sketch for Harriet’s memorial, now held in the British Museum, shows that Flaxman had considered creating a relief panel before deciding to design a freestanding sculpture. He made pencil studies of the three children - James, Edward and baby Charles - to ensure that he rendered them as naturally as possible. The finished sculpture, being a half-scale representation of the boys being read the Holy Scriptures by their loving mother, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1817. 6 • Christchurch Eye • August 2015

Picture:The Harriet Fitzharris memorial. Courtesy of www.findagrave.com The Malmesbury crypt is thought to be one of the earliest parts of the Priory Church and may even be a remnant of the former Saxon church. It was possibly the final resting place of some of the de Redvers family, the Lords of the Manor throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1863, James Howard Harris, the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury, became the Lord of the Manor of the Borough; the heart of the ancient Manor of Christchurch. In 1899 he too was buried in the family crypt alongside his mother and father.

Business Column It is good to see three new initiatives boosting the attraction of Christchurch High Street this month. The first is the introduction Peter of an Art and Antiques Market on the second Sunday of each month over the summer. This means the high street is closed off to give way to a number of arty, bric-a- brac and antiques stalls. I visited on the first Sunday it was held and with the high street car-free and uncrowded, the sun shining and the street cafes open, it produced an attractive and gentle way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon - and a boost to the local shops that were wise enough to open. If you are at a loose end on the second Sunday of a month, I recommend a visit. The second initiative is from a collective of independent traders who have agreed to keep their shops open until 7pm on Thursday evenings during August. A great idea and at the time of writing at least 25 shops and cafes have signed up. I fear it may take a little while for the knowledge of this to sink in to the local psyche, so I do encourage you to support it. And the third initiative is delightfully lighthearted. Some of you may remember that over the Christmas period a pop-up Alpine Bar appeared in an empty shop in Saxon Square for a few weeks. Although Christchurch has remarkable few empty shops, that unit is still vacant and it is being turned into a Caribbean theme bar for the summer - sounds too much fun to miss! These are the kind of enterprises that Christchurch needs and let’s hope that with some good weather and the support of both visitors and locals, the town centre will have a good Summer season.

Exploring Lesser Known Christchurch

‘The Christchurch we know today is one of the most beautiful towns in England and was proudly taken over by Dorset in the county boundary changes’, so said author Harry Ashley back in 1985 in his book Explore Dorset. This sentiment hasn’t changed much, and even today is inspiring new authors. One such is Steve Roberts, a well-known local writer and speaker, who has published his first book, Lesser Known Christchurch.

In it, Steve delves into a side of Christchurch you might not know, with commentary from local people to give a personal, insiders’ view of things. It’s rather like having your own personal guide. Steve lives in Christchurch and spent two years researching and writing the book. He explains:

‘The book includes interviews with dozens of local people – fishermen, artists, a herdsmen, young people, even a local clown – which give a real insight into contemporary Christchurch and explains why it’s such a vibrant place. I also devised six original walks to help people explore some special places and quieter areas.’ Like other Lesser Known guides in the series published by Dorset books specialist Roving Press, the book will appeal to locals as well as visitors. It takes you on a personal tour to reveal the quirkier side of Christchurch.

On Thursday 6 August, 5.30 – 7pm, the book is being launched in the Lady Chapel of the Priory. Enjoy drinks, nibbles, presentations, and chance to buy signed copies at a special price in the beautiful setting of the Priory. All welcome. The book will then be available in local outlets and direct from the publisher (www.rovingpress.co.uk, tel 01300 321531), priced £11.99.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 7 - The Old Tolsey

Here’s a conundrum, a plaque for a building that no longer exists and one we don’t even have a picture of. Welcome to the Old Tolsey. It’s plaque number 9 on our trail and is on the corner of High Street and Millhams Street. So, what do we know? Well, the plaque says a previous town hall once stood here. From Medieval times (c1150) until the 15th century, this was the old corporation’s ‘hub’ until a replacement arrived at the Market Square (junction of High Street and Castle Street). The first mention of an earlier municipal building called the ‘Old Tolsey’ is not until 1572, when its town hall days were already over. This was a deed concerning a tenant, so it was now a dwelling. He was a tanner by the name of ‘Nutkyn’. All very Beatrix Potter. ‘Tolsey’ meant literally toll house (for the market). There might have been a collector based here who took market dues. It can also refer to a merchants’ meeting place or ‘exchange’, which also makes sense. Millhams Street was once called Meeting House Lane apparently. The site of the Old Tolsey was strategic, for it is believed Millhams Street was once one side of an important crossroads in the centre of town. Check out Wareham, another ‘Alfredian’ fortified burgh, and there is the crossroads in the middle. Good old Saxon town planners eh? The crossroads probably connected the Mill Stream with what is today the Druitt Gardens and beyond to Creedy Path. It is suggested this provided a ‘cattle

18 • Christchurch Eye • August 2015

drove’ from the market to Creedy Fields. The crossroads has been lost in the High Street’s changes. The Old Tolsey is lost to us too, of course, demolished in Stephen 1788. We know the dwelling was then ‘rebuilt’ by Mary Gumm, she and Elizabeth Gumm being agents for the ‘Salisbury Journal’, established in 1736. In the 1840s the replacement building was home to the Ginn family, Martha a schoolmistress and Mary a milliner (hat maker). An old building like the Tolsey had to have a smuggling tale, of course, and it is alleged there was a link between the roofs of the hall and the Ship Inn next door, assisting in the transfer of contraband. Once its days as a town hall were done, the Tolsey had a mix of tenants live there. There was a brazier (maker of brass articles), mercer (trader or merchant), clerk and shoemaker. It is the tanner who interests me though. If he carried out his tanning on this site, it would have been a smelly spot at the best of times, especially if dog muck was used in the process (it was excellent for softening leather apparently). On the Water

MEET & EAT

If you are coming and going through Christchurch Harbour entrance this summer you need to be aware of the recent dredging John works to the large offshore sandbar that lies at its entrance, and how it may affect navigation through the channel. The objective of the recent work has been to replenish beaches depleted due to the severity of the 2013 / 2014 winter storms using sand and shingle extracted by dredger and pumped through a floating pipeline to temporary lagoons on the beach. Approximately 25,000 cubic metres was removed before being transported by large dump trucks to depleted bays.

Thursday Lunch Club

A new navigation channel in and out of The Run has been cut through the western end of the sandbar, and is buoyed with red & green markers. Stick to the buoyage channel and do not cut the corner of the ebb-tide delta. The Harbour entrance channel can be narrower with unexpected turns so keep a very good look out. Be prepared to give way to larger vessels that may be constrained by their draught or restricted in their ability to manoeuvre. Do be aware that it can take a while for channels to settle down and find their natural levels after man-made intervention. Mariners will need to do their tidal calculations bearing in mind that the bar can have less than 0.5 metre at low water spring tides.

Christchurch Rotary By the time you read this article the Club will have changed around its club officers. At our meeting on the Tuesday 30th June, Club President Colette Neaum handed over the chains of office to incoming President Malvern Jones.

Think shutters have to be square? Paul

Approaching the handover, the last couple of months have seen Christchurch club raising money in various ways. In May we hurriedly collected on the High Street for the Nepal Disaster Appeal. This resulted in us sending off four Shelter Boxes, which was generously matched by the St. James Partnership in Christchurch. Towards the end of the month we saw the mayor watching over ‘Little Munchkins’ in the Kids Kitchen at the food Festival, which we help sponsor. Our International committee agreed to partner Verwood club in supporting the Contessa Charity with a well worthy on going overseas project. One of our members decided to ‘spruce up’ the Rotary Wishing Well on Mudeford Quay for the summer tourists. Once at the Quay you’ll recognise it immediately, but did you know it was for Rotary? And if the above was not keeping us all busy, the more physical members of the club turned out in force to clear the grounds of fallen trees etc at Dacombe Homes. Dacombe Homes is a registered Charity Homes of Rest for Aged or Sick or Poor Persons In The Districts Of Bournemouth And Christchurch, to which we have held a longstanding relationship with, their property is ‘tucked’ away in Burton. Bet you didn’t know that either? So, our New President has plenty to be going on with, but still wants new ideas, and those could come from you! As always the door is open for new friends. Meeting at the Kings Arms Hotel alternate Tuesdays, perhaps we can look forward to seeing you?

Adopt a Pet CAN YOU GIVE BARNEY A LOVING HOME? Hello I’m Barney a 6 year old Beagle cross looking for a forever home, as my old owners, due to personal circumstances can no longer look after me. I am a very affectionate boy with lots of energy, typical of my breed, so will need lots of exercise and socialising as I don’t get on with some dogs at the moment. Although I’m looked after very well here at Waggy Tails I really, really would love to live in a home again where I could have lots of fun with my new family and enjoy our time together.

Dog Lovers Delight at New Christchurch Holiday Club Adam Gates has launched a club in Christchurch to solve dog owners’ holiday arrangements and offer local people the opportunity of having a companion dog stay with them. Local dog-owners are finding it difficult to get their dog suitably looked after while they are away. On the flip side of that, there are lots of people who, for one reason or another would love to have a dog around, but can’t commit to doing it on a full-time basis. Adam’s new My Dog Days Holiday Club is the perfect solution. He carefully pairs up dogs who need to be looked after while their owners are on holiday, with dog-lovers who enjoy a canine companion in their home for up to a fortnight. The My Dog Days Holiday Club is currently free to join. For more information contact Adam on 07759 231 013 Or visit mydogdays.com

To talk to us about adopting Barney or any of our other dogs, please call us on 01202 875000 or email us at admin@waggytails.org.uk or come along to one of our dog presentation days held on the 1st Saturday of every month at West Parley Memorial Hall, Christchurch Rd, West Parley (Nr Hurn Airport).

Waggy Tails Rescue is a registered charity based in Dorset. We rescue and rehome dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise are in need of a new home. We also find homes for other small furies that may be in our care so give us a call.

This month I thought for a change that I would share something with you that I am very proud of, I hope that you do not mind me indulging myself once in a while?

Whatever business you are Jeremy involved in it is nice to be appreciated. In the lettings industry we get the chance to enter nationwide competitions which give the public a chance to vote for the best in the business.

Each year, Belvoir as a company which has 160 franchised offices across the country enters The Sunday Times Awards and this year for the 5th time were voted Best Franchise Lettings Agency of 2015.

In addition, every letting agent and estate agent in the country is able to enter The ESTAS (Estate & Letting Agent Awards). This year I chose to enter my office in Christchurch as I felt it would give me a ‘feel’ as to what our landlords & tenants really thought about our service. At the end of each month the award scheme contacts the office with the highest marks based on customer feedback and ‘Wow!’, this month we were TOP OFFICE IN THE COUNTRY with our tenants giving us a resounding 96.03%. This tells me that we must be doing something right and with our landlords giving us a score of 94.21% I am very proud of our achievement, so thank you not only to our tenants & landlords but also to my fantastic staff: - Chris, Vanessa & Hayley! That’s it, I promise no more bragging but, if you’re a landlord and want to join us in our success and let us manage your property please call me.

Christchurch Citizens Association Another school year is over and for many families this is holiday time when it is good to be free of the school run. Let us hope that the weather will be kind and allow us to enjoy all of the local amenities. Druitt Hall is going from strength to strength and consequently the need has arisen for a caretaker. If there is anyone who is interested in this part time employment please phone 07778 264868. Hall users are requested to leave it clean and tidy but there is a need for additional cleaning according to different events and of course the inclement weather. Previously our members expressed concern over the rather dilapidated state of areas of the town eg. Overgrown hedges, weeds etc., this is partially due to funds being in short supply. Our council needs to save money and this should be done by all future plans being prepared by local architects that have good local knowledge and come at a lower cost than London based business, leaving money to be spent on bringing Christchurch back to its former glory. Has anyone managed to visit the Sunday Market, which is held every second Sunday from April to December? There are stalls for Fine Arts, Ceramics, Jewellery, Retro Fashion and Gadgets just to mention a few. We are fortunate that our local councillors regularly attend our meetings and provide a strong connection with our local authority. We thank them for their attendance.

TUCKTONIA: THE ‘GRAND MET’ YEARS Written by Alex McKinstry

A useful marker, when gauging where the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park used to be, is the line-up of flats in Fairway Drive, which feature in most surviving postcards of the site. These were put up on a former strip of Corporation land, still zoned for allotments when Harry Stiller snapped it up in 1959. Under a deed of variation, however, dated 28 May 1968, Christchurch Council assented for sixty flats to be built along this stretch, in five blocks – the work being carried out by the Fairway Construction Company, of which Harry’s father was a director. Unfortunately these flats were to cause numerous headaches for Harry and his successors in the years that followed. The main problem was the Fairway Drive Residents’ Association, ‘a group of people,’ says Harry today, ‘whom I could never understand – they chose to move into flats overlooking a fun park, then did nothing but complain about the noise.’ An early focus of their complaints was the 35-ft. giant slide or ‘Astraglide’ which Harry introduced to the leisure park in 1972. Three years later, when Harry sold the site to Grand Metropolitan, the new owners repositioned the slide to reduce noise levels – whereupon the residents put in a fresh complaint, saying it was spoiling their view of the river. These gripes and quibbles never really went away; a later owner told me the only fun he ever had with the residents’ association was when one of their representatives walked out of his office in a fury, then got stuck in the revolving door. Grand Met owned the leisure park for eight years, and it has been claimed that – possibly on account of these objections – they tended to underinvest in the site. This was not initially the case; when the Astraglide became unusable, due to fibreglass protruding through the surface, the company replaced it with a six-lane, Disneyfied version (which ended up at the Rotunda Amusement Park in Folkestone). The company also developed new models for Tucktonia, the site’s miniature landscape, touting it – correctly – as the largest in the world, with over 200 models spread out over four acres. 40 • Christchurch Eye • August 2015

The photos here show Tucktonia’s tallest structure, a 26-ft. replica of the Post Office Tower, being lowered into place on 9 May 1978. The site had become so packed by that stage that it had to be winched into position, a Lynx helicopter from AAC Middle Wallop doing the honours. The model cost £7,000 to make and was fitted, like its life-size counterpart, with navigational warning lights and a rotating ‘restaurant’ section that moved at a rate of eight revolutions per hour.

Grand Met eventually despaired of the site for three reasons: high maintenance costs; limited room for expansion; and a general shift of perspective in the company, which tended to focus more on its pubs and hotels as the 1980s wore on. This last point was confirmed by Bob Hazell, the site’s latest managing director, when Grand Met put the site up for sale in 1983. The park was ‘a one-off’, he told a stunned public; it ‘does not fit in with our current operations’. Later, it emerged that Grand Met had been looking to sell the site to developers. Fortunately, a £1.25 million rescue package was waiting around the corner. Alex McKinstry’s The Village of Tuckton, 35,000 BC – 1926, is now available at £8.95 a copy. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? 10TH-16TH AUGUST I S N AT I O N A L A L L O T M E N T S W E E K

During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy! There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge. Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of foodmiles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of foodrelated concerns seems to be growing exponentially. In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food.

Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that. To join them simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country. In some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits!

Allotment Benefits Diet You can harvest fresh, organic, fruit and veg Economic You’ll save loads of money growing your own

Environmental Recycling organic waste into compost, reducing food miles and creating a wildlife-friendly habitat Health Great for aerobic exercise and therapeutic calm Social It’s a brilliant way to meet friendly, like-minded people of all ages. Useful Website: www.nsalg.org.uk

Teen Column It’s summer!!!!! No school until September, which means we don’t have to get up early, we can wear pj’s all day and we don’t have Laura to do any school work! This summer is going to be great. Most of my friends and I have jobs so we have saved up some money and we plan to all go out for a big day. Now that we are a little bit older we can do more things without adult supervision. I have no doubt that I will be spending a couple of nights sleeping round my best friends’ house. I say sleeping, but that’s unlikely as we go to bed but end up chatting for hours! If you’re going to a party/sleepover then you always need sweets; Christchurch has lots of places to buy sweeties, two of my favourites are The Sweets Emporium and Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe. Between them they have everything you could ask for. My favourite sweets are rhubarb and custard which I always buy from Mr Simms as they have all the best traditional sweets and for great prices. The Sweets Emporium has more ‘modern’ sweets such as lots of American candy like twinkles. It’s hard to pick a favourite so instead I choose both!

This month I hope to go to the Christchurch Carnival weekend which is on the 15th and 16th of August. Both days are different so if you can, try and go along to both. On the 15th there are fun and fireworks on the Quay and on the 16th the Carnival Procession is leaving from the car park at the back of the Civic Offices at 2pm then finishing on the Quay. There is music throughout and profits are split between local charities. Another event I hope to attend is the RNLI Mudeford Funday on the 9th August, always guaranteed to be a great day with so many things going on but my favourite has to be the Raft Race. The spotlight always seems to be on the losers rather than the winners and is so funny to watch! Again, all money raised goes to local charities so you have a fun day out as well as doing a good deed!

Christchurch Detachment Dorset Army Cadet Force (ACF)

August is a busy month for Thor Elsson us here at the Christchurch Detachment, Dorset ACF – even though it’s the school holidays and we don’t parade we do keep busy with the highlight of the year for many cadets – Our Annual Camp. This year we’re heading off to Penally in South Wales for 9 days of exciting and challenging activities, some of which many cadets have not ever tried before. For many cadets the high point is the chance to spend a number of nights living out in the field, learning military tactics and fieldcraft. Adventurous training is another focus, with abseiling, mountain biking, archery and kayaking on the agenda. Annual camp gives cadets aged 12-18 years old the opportunity to go away with the other members of the ACF from our county for nine days of the school summer holiday. They get to meet cadets from other detachments around Dorset and often make friends for life. If you’re reading this and thinking “That sounds like fun” or “I wish I could do that but I’m too old to be a cadet” well, why not join us as an Adult Volunteer? We are always looking for new Adults to help us offer all these activities to our cadets – no previous experience, military or otherwise, is needed as full training is provided and, just like the cadets, you’ll get to learn new skills and make new friends too. If you want to know more then why not pop along and speak to us when we’re back from camp and at the Bournemouth Air Festival 20th - 23rd Aug 2015, look out for our mobile rock wall or visit www.armycadets.com and follow the Volunteer With Us links. We’d love to hear from you.

EASY CHICKEN GYROS & TZATZIKI SAUCE INGREDIENTS 4 chicken breasts, pounded to ½ inch thickness 1 tablespoon mediterranean seasoning (you can substitute Italian seasoning in a pinch) 1 red pepper, thinly sliced ½ red onion, thinly sliced 4 pitas (this is a Greek-style flatbread you can find at almost any grocery store near the bread and tortillas or in the bakery) optional: lettuce, feta cheese crumbles TZATZIKI SAUCE ½ English cucumber, peeled and diced 2 cups cold plain Greek yogurt 4 teaspoons minced garlic 1/3 cup chopped dill, fresh or frozen (may sub 2 tablespoons dried dill) 1½ Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (juice of ½ medium lemon) ½ tsp salt, or to taste 1/8 tsp black pepper INSTRUCTIONS Puree all sauce ingredients in a blender or food processor (see note below recipe first!). Cover and chill until ready to serve. (If you have time, make this a few hours in advance or the night before so that the flavors can marinate). Season chicken breasts with mediterranean seasoning. Cook in a large skillet or pan over medium heat 5-6 minutes on each side until cooked through. Cut into strips. Lay pitas on a clean surface. Add lettuce (if desired, chicken, red pepper strips, and onions. Top with tzatziki sauce and feta (if desired). Fold pita over like a sandwich, or roll it into a “tunnel shape”. IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO LOVES THICKER DRESSINGS AND SAUCES, SIMPLY SQUEEZE AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE OUT OF THE CUCUMBERS BEFORE YOU PUREE THE SAUCE.

The annual RNLI Mudeford Funday event takes place this month on Sunday the 9th August.

This event is about having a great day out with the community and raising lots of money to help support our local Mudeford Lifeboat and Lifeguards.

For those of you that haven’t been residents in Christchurch for 20 years I thought it might be worth writing about the origins of this event.

It first started out as a Trawler race many years ago (more than 25 years) where all the local commercial fishing boats would race out through the run plough through the sea to a big red buoy about 1000mtrs offshore and race back home again! It was not unusual to see black smoke pouring out of the engine bay of one or two trawlers as their engines blew up!As the fishing fleet declined and the cost of repairs increased the event started to fizzle out.

About 20 years ago the Raft race was first kicked off to help raise funds and a smaller event with a few RNLI stalls manned by volunteers, perched on the main Quay area, Collecting donations and raising money to help fund the new Lifeboat station you see today. I can still remember attending both the Trawler race and the first raft races of that era. Today’s event has grown beyond all recognition from those days, The works of arts that are now presented as ‘Rafts’ are a testament to the teams that spend hours designing and building them. Of course we still get the 6 barrels, three planks and 200ft of rope, type as well! All are welcome. We expanded on to the grass area of the quay about 6 years ago, more than doubling the size and number of stalls, add the additional events, Duck race, Air display, Music and other entertainment and we have a full day to keep everyone having fun.. The planning for this event takes almost a year and keeps the committee members fully engaged.

I often get asked about the fairground rides and stalls, Charles Cole who provides most of the rides has supported this event for over 18 years and is still the largest single contributor to the money raised on the day on top of donating fencing, power and almost anything else we ask him for! So please attend, have fun and feel free to spend/donate to the RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat!! By Kim Skinner (S.M.)

Mum’s the Word If you see a pink babydrinking bottle floating around Christchurch in the river, it’s ours.

Recently, I took advantage of having just one of our four Natasha children with me and took her on a lovely walk around the Priory, with a little cake to feed the ducks. After seeing mummy throwing food to the ducks, obviously this little lady thought it was best to copy mum and lob the one thing in her hands to the birds too, her bottle. I considered jumping into the river to retrieve it, but instead we just watched it float away whilst my daughter then sobbed uncontrollably. Lesson learnt? I doubt it.

We then accidentally participated in the library’s ‘Rhyme Time’, which they hold every Tuesday 10.15-10.45 and is completely free. I had heard of this session before but never actually been, but as the library got busier and busier with lots of little people and a lady then started singing ‘the wheels on the bus’ I thought we should stick around and see how it goes. It was a massive success, it seems someone other than mummy singing nursery songs is very enjoyable and for older ones they had some colouring in after as well.

So, as we hurdle into summer, I have been looking for some different activities for my eldest daughter, one I came across was a creative writing class taking place in Christchurch run by Chantelle Atkins. The class is called Chasing Driftwood and is for 7-16 year olds and I believe there maybe an adult one happening too! For any details contact chanatkins@hotmail.co.uk I’ve also booked her onto a sailing course run by Hengistbury Head; they offer a big variety of sailing and watersport short courses, from age 7 upwards. Lastly, and a little off topic..I must try to say thank you to a very kind lady who handed in a lost birthday present to our local school, it was my daughters! This lovely lady took so much time and trouble to track us down but I don’t know who you are! So hopefully you are reading this and know how much I appreciate it (as does my very happy four year old). What kind, lovely people we live amongst. Enjoy your summer, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for my water bottle...

All Saints Church, Thorney Hill is a gem of a building located on the edge of the New Forest.

It was built in 1906 by the Manners family and contains an outstanding example of an Arts and Crafts Movement mural, painted by the artist Phoebe Anna Traquair. There are also important examples of work by Eric Gill which make this a unique little church.

Sadly in 2013 lead was stolen from the roof of the church and this has created the need for a restoration project which is being driven by a small group of volunteers calling themselves the raise The Roof Committee. Good progress has been made towards the £92,000 target and it is hoped a Family Fun Day, to be held on 22 August 2015 at Burley Park, Burley will provide a boost to the project. The event will run between 1-5pm and will provide many attractions for locals and visitors alike such as dog shows, arena events, stalls, children’s entertainment, archery and food and drink. The church is open every Saturday during Summer months between 2-4pm and is well worth a visit. A variety of music events is also held at the church - details are shown on the Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/ AllSaintsThorneyHill. For more information on the church or the events phone Ian Searle on 01425 673495.

Travel & Holiday claims …for accidents, injuries or illness abroad, including travel by air and sea Travelling by air or by sea, for most of us, is the way we get to our foreign holiday destinations. Whilst both are safe modes of transport, unfortunately individuals can still be injured by accidents or affected by illness when using them. Travel operators must take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of their passengers at all times, however, if rules are breached – resulting in an injury or illness – then you may be entitled to compensation. You may have been affected by illness due to poor hygiene standards on board or even food poisoning. You may make a claim for compensation against a holiday company for an accident, injury or illness which occurred abroad if the holiday was booked as part of a package deal through a travel agent in the UK. Your holiday accident, injury, or illness would need to be the fault of the travel agent or their representatives, such as the hotel staff.
