Dear Reader Bonfire Night is now upon us and I have my fingers crossed for the weather to be dry for this wonderful event being held on Saturday 7th November at Stanpit Marsh. Not only is it great value Cheryl and fun for all the family but at the same time raises a great deal of money for many local charities with the help of Christchurch Rotary. Please show your support and come along, the fun begins at 6pm. Another great event this month is the Christchurch Christmas Festival that takes place on Saturday 28th November - a whole day of Christmas fun and activities taking place throughout the town including the Christmas Lights Switch On. Turn to page 11 to find out more about the many activities available that day. I’m sorry to say that this month’s magazine brings you the last of our Tucktonia articles. So many of you have contacted us to say how much you’ve been enjoying reading them every month. - The Christchurch Dog
Did you know that the Labrador Retriever, which is listed by the Kennel Club as by far the most popular breed of dog in the country, is widely considered to have originated in Christchurch? In 1806 James Edward Harris, the eldest son of James Harris, the 1st Earl Of Malmesbury, married 22 year-old Harriet Dashwood. The young couple set up home at Heron (now Hurn) Court. However, in 1815, mere weeks after the Battle of Waterloo had brought peace to Europe, tragedy befell James and his young family when Harriet died suddenly, possibly of a ruptured appendix. Her memorial can be seen in the Quire of the Priory Church. After Harriet’s death a grieving James preoccupied himself with his favourite sport, shooting. His detailed shooting journals provide much information about the wildlife of the area, the weather, and even the daily activities at Heron Court. Shortly after succeeding to the title of 2nd Earl of Malmesbury in 1820, James visited Poole. The town had long been a centre for the Newfoundland fishing industry and he saw there the hardy fishermen, many of them being from Poole and the surrounding area, including Christchurch, who spent the summer months fishing the Grand Banks of the North Atlantic. With them were their purpose-bred working dogs, called Little Newfoundlands, which were used to carry ropes between boats, help recover nets, and even tow the small dory fishing boats – and were also known to be good gun dogs. However, the Newfoundland fishing industry had been badly affected by the Napoleonic Wars, which had seen many skilled seamen recruited, or press-ganged, into the Royal Navy. Also, the peace in Europe following the Battle of Waterloo had ended the valuable market for salt fish that Britain had negotiated with its allies Spain and Portugal.
near Aldershot. He travelled widely to shoot wildfowl, but his diaries record that he favoured Keyhaven near Lymington (where he later built a house, now called Hawkers Cottage, next to the Gun Inn). He also visited Poole and Christchurch - in 1813 he wrote that he had become very ill after dining on cold boiled beef at a Christchurch inn! As a result of his visit to Poole, James Harris decided to purchase two pairs of Little Newfoundlands with the intention of breeding them. The breed was certainly not unknown in England, but James is considered to be the first to begin a dedicated breeding program to enhance their useful qualities. He had purpose-built kennels constructed on his Heron Court estate close to the gamekeeper’s cottage in Quomp Copse at Blackwater. When James died in 1841 the estate passed to his eldest son, James Howard Harris, who became the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury. He continued breeding Little Newfoundlands and is credited with renaming them as Labradors. He wrote: ‘The real breed may be known by its close coat, which turns the water off like oil and, above all, a tail like an otter.’ In the early 1880s James Howard gifted two dogs, Ned and Avon, to the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, a Scottish peer with estates in the Scottish Borders and another noted breeder. These two dogs are the first entries in the Buccleuch Stud Book and are considered to be the ancestors of the beloved modern Labrador, which was recognised as a distinct breed by the Kennel Club in 1903. Much of this article is based on an account written by William Harris, the 6th Earl of Malmesbury, in 1991 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Labrador Retriever Club.
Such influences had an impact on the availability of the Little Newfoundland dogs, as was noted by Lt Col Peter Hawker in his popular book on hunting, Instructions to Young Sportsmen, first published in 1814. He wrote: ‘Poole was, till of late years, the best place to buy Newfoundland dogs; either just imported, or broken in; but now they are become much more scarce, owing (the sailors observe) to the strictness of “those ------- tax-gatherers.’ Hawker, a former cavalry officer who at the age of 22 had been invalided during the Napoleonic Wars at the Battle of Talavera in 1809, lived at Longparish

THE CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL 2015 – A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS This year’s Christmas Festival takes place on Saturday 28th November and, like past years, we have a whole day of Christmas fun and activities taking place throughout the town.
The Christmas market in the High Street will take place from 10am to 7pm with over 50 stalls offering a variety of food, drink and Christmas gifts for sale. The Priory Church is once again hosting an Advent and Craft Fayre from 10am-6.30pm. This provides visitors the opportunity to browse and buy unique items and gifts, all hand made by local crafters and artists. The Advent Fayre includes cake and bric a brac sales, a raffle and seasonal refreshments. The ever-popular Alpine Bar by Soho will be back again in Saxon Square. Enjoy a festive drink and maybe a bite to eat in the Alpine themed bar. Open from 10am-10pm. There will be a full programme of music and live entertainment throughout the day. Choirs, dancers, musicians and bands will be performing in Saxon Square and other locations within the town. Father Christmas and his reindeer will fly into Peeks Partystore car park in Reid Street at 4.00pm. From there Santa’s elves will lead his reindeer down to the Priory Church where the reindeer can be petted and children can give their Christmas wish letters to the man himself!
The Christmas lights switch-on will take place at The Mayor’s Parlour in the High Street at 6pm. This is sure to be a fun packed day out for all the family.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 10 - Priory House
“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.” Mark Twain might have had Gustavus Brander and Priory House in mind when he wrote this.
The Brander family, of Swedish origin, first appeared in today’s Highcliffe, Gustavus’s father, Charles, purchasing the Nea estate. Gustavus became a successful merchant, governor of the Bank of England, Fellow of the Royal Society, Trustee of the British Museum and Lord of the Manor of Christchurch Twyneham and it was around 1776 he built a suitably imposing house in Christchurch as a country residence. Brander had fortunately inherited the accumulated wealth of an uncle. Priory House was built just 1.8 metres from the Priory’s south side, on the site of the demolished monastic cloister. Whilst uncovering the remnants of some of these buildings, Brander found a cache of bird bones, prompting speculation there may have been a pagan site here once, although their presence has never really been satisfactorily explained. When Brander wasn’t working he liked to think of himself as a ‘naturalist’, amusing himself with scientific pursuits, including collecting local fossil shells, a set of which he donated to the British Museum. He also appreciated literature and fine arts and was a ‘collector’, whose bits and bobs included the coronation chair, wrought in polished iron, in which the first German emperors were crowned. He was also a great lover of ‘cury’ (sic) by all accounts.
Priory House almost never was, for eight years earlier Brander came close to a watery grave in London, when his coach and horses bolted for the Thames. Apparently the horses Stephen clattered down three flights of steps and plunged into the river (fortunately at low water), when cloying mud arrested their progress. Some beefy blokes from a nearby pub interrupted their boozing to rescue Brander and his coach. His miraculous escape prompted him to donate £200 to the Priory, which paid for its first organ. A sermon of thanksgiving is still preached on the 3rd Sunday in August (known locally as ‘Coach and Horses Sunday’). Brander passed away in January 1787, due to a ‘strangury’, a blockage at the base of the bladder, by which time he was in his mid-60s. Priory House was purchased by public subscription in 1934 and is used for church functions, cultural and community events and houses the Priory gift shop and café. A popular open-air Shakespeare is held in the grounds in the summer. The plaque itself (no 12) is not on the building, but on the other side of the wall, forming the southern boundary of the property, in Priory Gardens (near the pond and sculpture commemorating 900 years of the Priory). Christchurch’s biggest ever housing development has taken a step forward.
Taylor Woodrow recently revealed their plans for the proposed development of Peter a massive new 850 house estate. The site for this development covers the large fields between the by-pass and railway line stretching from Stoney Cross, along behind Sainsbury’s and then up Roeshot Hill.
The proposal has been mooted for some time, but plans have now been drawn up to show the new road that will run the length of the site with an indication of where the houses might be situated. Much is made of the pluses. The intention is to develop a central oasis around the River Mude, which is certainly in need of improvement, and also includes the provision of play and dog walking areas, which European directives require. There is no indication yet of the type of housing beyond generalities such as family housing with affordable housing included.

At this early stage the biggest concerns being expressed centre around the traffic impact to an already congested area, as well as the potential impact on existing amenities such as local schools and medical centres.
More detailed plans are presumably in the pipeline and, as a leading Councillor has expressed to me “we want to ensure they will not be building the slums of the future”.
The other big concern is that this development comes along at the same time as a proposal for mineral extraction immediately next to the proposed site. That plan is to extract a staggering 4 million tonnes of sand and gravel from the other side of the railway line. It involves an estimated 60 heavy lorry movements a day as well as all the noise and dust and industrialisation that such an undertaking will involve. So if you think the traffic in Christchurch is bad now, just you wait!

Yes, it’s time for Guy Fawkes Night with bonfires and fireworks. Stanpit will again provide an evening of entertainment for children and adults alike. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather! We are pleased to hear that the Navitus Bay Wind farm has been rejected, this was something that the majority of our members voted to oppose. Unfortunately, another item of planning that we objected to most strongly were plans concerning historic cottage, Little Haven. On appeal, the inspector decided that this could be demolished and be replaced with a modern larger property. This has now set a precedent and we are concerned that this will be the beginning of the end for the fishing character of Mudeford Quay. A subject that was again discussed at our last meeting was the ongoing scruffy, unkempt state of Christchurch, with weeds, blocked drains causing surface flooding in some areas and post boxes desperately in need of a coat of paint. With the monetary cutbacks the Council is unable to employ enough workers to carry out these necessary tasks, however members felt that if we all went ‘the extra mile’ and kept our frontages free from rubbish and weeds it would be a step in the right direction in improving Christchurch. Our members feel if we can get everyone to feel a sense of pride in the town where we live we can soon make a real difference and help bring Christchurch back to it’s original splendour. We now hear that there is a proposal to create a ‘Super Council’ that would be managed together by Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and East Dorset. HOW EASY OR DIFFICULT CAN IT BE TO BE A LANDLORD?
I thought that this week I would share a conversation with you or rather some history culminating in a conversation!

Just under 3 years ago I was approached by a landlord looking to let out a house in Highcliffe, she was going to self-manage and thought our fees were high! She chose instead an online letting agent and the last I heard until last week was that the house was let.
Last week that landlord contacted me again to ask if this time around we would be able to manage the property completely and when I asked why this was her response (summarised!) The tenants were initially located and 6 month agreement put in place with rent agreed at £1500 PCM. After 6 months the tenancy went periodic (monthly). Earlier this year after some issues the landlord decided to serve notice upon the tenants to get the house back. It was at this point that the tenants advised the landlord that as paperwork relating to the deposit was not given to them at the end of the initial 6 months when the periodic tenancy started her notice was invalid! Having taken advice she found this to be correct which meant her serving the paperwork and returning the deposit before a valid notice could be served. She did this and then the tenants stopped paying rent! This meant instructing solicitors (cost) no rent coming in (cost) and a long wait – 3 months in the end. So to summarise, had we managed the house the landlord would have incurred costs c£6000, in the end apart from the stress, the landlords costs amounted to c£5000 plus the tenants left without cleaning and having damaged the house (no deposit now held) so all in all the landlord probably saving a couple of hundred £’s.

LOCAL CARE HOME AWARDED TOP STATUS IN NATIONAL CARE STANDARDS FRAMEWORK
Staff and residents at Care South’s Queensmead care home in Christchurch are celebrating after being awarded the coveted “Beacon Status” by the National Gold Standards Framework, which aims to ensure a ‘gold standard’ of care for all people near the end of life. The accreditation process involved 18 months of training, including four best practice workshops, and focused on helping staff to identify the needs of residents at each stage of their life and plan dignified care plans on that basis.
To gain accreditation by the Gold Standards Framework (GSF), care providers are required to undertake a selfassessment against 20 key standards, to develop a portfolio of evidence demonstrating best practice and are visited by an approved Gold Standards Framework assessor.

Christchurch Rotary So, with summer now officially over, what have we got to look forward to?
Well how about the Annual Christchurch Rotary Bonfire at Stanpit, followed by a Paul bit of retail therapy at the Christchurch Emporium Shopping Village at Avon works (Old Mostyn building). The Bonfire event will see all members getting stuck in to make this a safe fun environment for all the family.
The Rotary Bonfire at Stanpit has become an annual event on the calendar, and involves all club members, and very often their families. The date has been set for Saturday 7th November, 2015 (Gates open 5.00pm, Fireworks 7.00pm -ish) with a Family Ticket (2 Adults + 2 Children) costing £15.00. Fingers crossed for a rain free weekend, especially as we need the following day to clean up! Amongst the attractions are the James Emmett’s Ragtime Revellers, along with numerous food stalls, children’s amusements and novelty stalls. Those involved include Highcliffe Rotary, Round Table, local Club Scout Groups, Girl Guides, to name but a few! The Bonfire event is supporting various causes, including: the area’s Community Youth, Life Saving, Sea Cadets, Fortune Riding School, as well as sponsoring the Christchurch Sports Council Prizes. On the 19th November (6.30 - 9.30pm) why not come along for an evening of casual shopping, coupled with a glass of mulled wine (Ticket price £5, inclusive of drink) either buy on the night OR pre-book (Mary and Richard Reader 01425 837961) There will be hairdressing and beauty demonstrations, lots of stalls, and so much more! This evening will benefit local charities: McMillan and the Mayor’s Goodwill fund.
These are both local Community events, organised by ‘local community’ people with ALL funds going back into, the local community. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? ALL ABOUT BONFIRES
November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents
them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke. The other issue with bonfires is, of course, safety.
Bonfire Safety Check-list
• Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees. • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy just in case. • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.

Teen Column Living in Christchurch is fun because there’s always so much to do. I’m Emilie and I go to Twynham Sixth form, so everything is just around the corner. I’m Emily currently preparing for my new kitten, Smudge, who is moving in next week. I chose him from the litter as he tried to eat my brother’s school tie so I’m not sure what will survive in our house! November is a great month for me because as well as getting a kitten, I am going to see One Direction in London at the 02 Arena. Sadly my seats have downgraded from front row at the BIC in Bournemouth to about 7 miles away from the stage... I’ll take my binoculars! However, I was also lucky enough to go to V Festival this summer and managed to get to the front for The Script, Conor Maynard and Calvin Harris, which was an amazing experience! Small unusual shops and stalls in Christchurch are my favourite; I love browsing round Christchurch Shopping Emporium, which sells cheap bunting, small gifts and really unusual pressies. This is an ideal shop for buying good quality handmade items. I’m especially good at bribing my Mum into buying things! Last weekend I went to a charity event to raise money for my friend to go to Uganda. She used a projector in her garden and we watched movies on a big screen outside, sat on camp chairs and under blankets. So far she has raised £1250, which is being used to build schools, help teach children and other projects for the students at Yurie Yoshimi Primary School. The school, in Uganda, takes in children who often are orphans or have disabilities and gives them the chance to gain an education and a better quality of life. The charity YUYO run this trip through Twynham School and some of my friends have already visited in the past few months. Have a fab month!!!

PERFECT PARKIN A bonfire night treat - Serves 12 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS
225g / 8oz Plain flour 2 level tsps Ground ginger 1 level tsp Bicarbonate of Soda ½ level tsp salt 225g /8oz Medium oatmeal 115g / 4oz Black treacle 115g / 4oz Golden syrup 115g / 4oz Soft light-brown sugar 115g /4 oz Unsalted butter 150ml / 5floz Milk 1 Egg - beaten
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas mk 4. Grease and line a 30 x 25 x 5 cm (12 x 10 x 2 inch) roasting tin with grease-proof paper. Place the treacle, golden syrup, sugar and butter into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Remove from the heat. Allow to cool a little then beat in the milk and the egg. Sift the flour, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the oatmeal and make a well in the centre.
Pour the liquid mixture into the well and beat thoroughly. Pour into the roasting tin and bake in the centre of the oven until firm and springy. Leave to cool in the tin. When cold wrap in greaseproof paper and leave for a couple of days in an airtight tin, because the flavour of Parkin improves with keeping.

It’s been a very busy few weeks since I last wrote the column, we’ve had 15 new recruits join us as a result of our Open Evening. This augers well for the future and I’d like to welcome them all to our Detachment. In addition to the recruits joining us, we’ve had to say a sad farewell to our Detachment Commander Sjt Jon Terry who is moving away out of the area. We’re all going to miss him and wish him all the best for the future. His departure has meant that a new Detachment Commander needed to be found and I’m very proud to say after being interviewed for the position along with 3 others I was successful in being appointed to take over. It’s a great honour for me and I’m looking forward to taking the Detachment on to great things. Parades Members of the Detachment attended the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Service at Christchurch, proudly carrying both our Standard and that of RAFA. We’re now practicing our drill in preparation for the upcoming Remembrance Parade on November 8th. We hope you’ll join us in paying our respects to all the service personnel past and present and line the route along Christchurch High Street to the Priory.

Mum’s the Word I have to start off with two great tips I found out this month, which I hope will be helpful to some readers.

The first one is that the local libraries stock the food bin recycling bags that you use for your small household waste bin provided by the council. I never knew this! I haven’t been to Christchurch library yet but I know Tuckton library have them as I picked some up in passing. The second tip is that Dorset County Council offer an amazing service hiring out musical instruments to children, at a really good rate per year. The instruments available are everything you could imagine from guitars to flutes and prices are from around £20-£80 per year. Also when I found this online they were offering a 50% discount for the first 6 months of your first hire. Great for any budding musicians in your house. Now, I’m going to have to mention Christmas as it is next month...and I am guilty of putting up my Christmas tree at the end of November. Please reserve judgment. This year, I really want to try and buy nearly all of my family’s presents from local businesses. It’s this time of year that can really boost our town and support of our local traders. Don’t forget to also check out local artists and craft makers who may not have a shop but can rather be found online, often posting on media sites or at local craft fairs. Their products are often the unique one-offs, my personal favourite type of gift! Perhaps it will save all that mad dashing in crowded shopping centres too? Have a great November; you’ll see me hanging up my baubles...

TUCKTONIA: THE LAST CHAPTER Written by Alex McKinstry
The Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park closed for the final time in December 1986. Two years later, Tucktonia Ltd, which had run the attraction since 1983, entered voluntary liquidation, by which point the development of the site by Costain Homes (pictured below) was well underway. There is nevertheless an interesting postscript to the Tucktonia story - one that brings Harry Stiller, the founder of the site, back to the centre of events.
Having moved to the United States in the late 1970s, Harry settled back in the Christchurch district and had renewed his acquaintanceship with Gordon Robbins, the Bridge Street architect (now sadly deceased), whose legacies to the town include Saxon Square and the Christchurch civic offices. In 1994, it came to both men’s attention that the Defence Research Agency (successors to MEXE) were vacating the Ministry of Defence site in Barrack Road - potentially freeing up thirty acres of land. Discussions arose and on 9 June 1995, a new company was formed - Tucktonia 2000 Ltd with the aim of reviving the fun park on this newlyvacated territory. A copy of the plan survives. The miniature landscape was to be re-established on a UK-shaped artificial island, while the stable block for Christchurch Barracks, a Grade II-listed building, was to be converted into a heritage centre. At the centre of the site would be an indoor amusements dome (now the site of Homebase), and supplementing this would be a go-kart track, an ice-rink, a ten-pin bowling alley, and the offer of boat trips down the Stour to Mudeford - the cost of the development estimated at £20 million. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Defence were more interested in a rival proposal from an Essex-based company, Countryside Commercial, to develop 46 • Christchurch Eye • November 2015
the site for retail and residential use - and duly sold the site to this company when their scheme received planning consent in 1995. Undiminished, Harry turned his attention to the golf course at Iford Bridge and approached the owner of that site, Christchurch Borough Council, with a view to developing it as an ‘Iford Country Leisure Park’. A joint venture was proposed: the Council would throw in the land, Tucktonia 2000 Ltd would shoulder the cost of building a fun park there, and the proceeds would be split 50-50 between the two bodies. As Harry recalls, ‘I think I can best describe the Council’s reaction as negative to the whole proposal.’ The seal of doom was provided by a squadron of petitioning River Way residents, and although the company subsequently approached Poole Borough Council with similar proposals, the only site they could provide was too far outside Poole to be commercially viable. Tucktonia 2000 Ltd continued to file small accounts at Companies House, and was eventually dissolved by voluntary strike-off in 2005. Sadly, then, the void left by Tucktonia’s closure in 1986 was never really filled, and there are many long-standing residents (Harry included) who feel a proper fun park is the missing ingredient for tourists visiting the Bournemouth and Christchurch area. No less sad is the lack of any memorial to many years of merrymaking at the Stour Road site, the last particles of The Golfers’ Arms (latterly ‘Bar Max’) having been cleared away in 2003. It is only right that Harry Stiller should have the last word on this subject. ‘Some years ago,’ he says, ‘I was approached by Christchurch Borough Council and they were talking about unveiling some kind of civic feature to commemorate the site, but I never heard anything more about it. What I would love to do, though, one of these nights, is go back to the site and nail up my very own plaque - proclaiming to the whole world that “TUCKTONIA WAS HERE”.’ Alex McKinstry is hugely grateful to Harry Stiller, Paul Taylor, Peter Arnold, Sue Good, Michael and Joan Hodges, and Graeme Cole for sharing their memories of Tucktonia with him.
